Anyone else still rooting for Eric Morris?
SilverEagle replied to MeanGreenZen's topic in Mean Green Football
Totally agree -
Thats fantastic. They should have their own unique uni's with their school colors. Or at least have some sort of insignia on their NT uniforms. I have written MANY TIMES to the school of music expressing my concerns about the Green Brigade. Daniel Cook actually ask me to watch a practice where they debuted the North Texas fanfare. Something that he either composed himself or had someone in the school of music compose. Daniel (Dr?) Cook inherited a pretty crappy version of the Green Brigade. The most significant change he made was the fanfare. The rest is CRAP. The Band is unwieldy and bloated, and the best word (besides crap) to describe the pre-game show is "perfunctory". They just go through the (musical) motions. At the Army game, as the Band was at mid-field playing the fight song I stood up and did the traditional clapping along with the band, but I kept yelling "TEMPO! TEMPO! GET THE DAMN TEMPO UP! Get to the middle of the field with energy and forgodsakes STOP PLAYING THE "AMERICAN EMBLEM MARCH". That is Junior High stuff. THIS is what a College Band looks like......or is SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE. This is the closest thing to what the North Texas Band used to look like in the 60's-early 70's, under the late, great Maurice McAdow........only the McAdow Bands played better than these guys. But everything else (including the Uniforms) were pretty much the same. So I ask, do they have more talented musicians than us? Do they have more pride than us? I'm interested in hearing from "letsgiveacheer" about this.

Well MK, we have been running the damn ball. I believe I'm correct in stating that our leading rusher is Shane Porter, a 186lb WR transfer with (near as I can tell) a bum shoulder from Kansas State. He averages 7.2 yards per carry. McGill averages 5 yards per carry, and occasionally Sibley (#21) gets into the game. None of these guys was a starter in the beginning of the season. We have lost the services of Ragsdale, a very promising D. Harris (#44) who averaged 8.8 yards before he got injured, and Evans (#26) who was averaging 6.4 before he was injured. We have rushed for 1737 yards, and our opponents have put up 2269. Although sometimes it seems like much more. All things considered; I'd say that (except for very short yardage) we were running the ball pretty good. And this doesn't even take into account how many starting linemen we have lost since the first game of the season. What I think would have made almost as much difference as anything for us would have been the presence of 3 or 4 effective run disrupters in the middle of our defense.

Porter scheduled to start? Did I just imagine him leaving both the Army and UTSA games holding his shoulder?
-
I hate to help you out in any way, but Houston had some pretty signature wins back in the 60's that got them noticed. They beat #3 Michigan State 37-7 in 1967, in 68 they tied #4 Texas and #7 Georgia, and beat Tulsa a NCAA record 100-6. Those were the days of Warren McVea and the veer.

Nicely done.

Totally agree. I remember when it was announced that Corkey Nelson was hired. Since he had previously been the DL coach under Rod Rust my first response was "well at least he knows what he's getting himself into".
-
....and ably assisted by the SilverEagle/Firefightenrick consortium.

We need to find the Patrick Cobbs of DC's. How impressive is a coach who is down to his third or fourth string RB and coaches/develops him to get 192 yards against UTSA.,,,,,with a bum shoulder.

Is this the best team UNT has ever had?
SilverEagle replied to meangreenfaninno's topic in Mean Green Football
And that is certainly one of the opinions about NT football of all time. -
Why Support this Program?….Seriously!?
SilverEagle replied to Meangreen Fight's topic in Mean Green Football
And it was Craig Helwig that hired him, NOT RV. And, up to the DD hiring, I thought CH was the worst AD we had ever had. Don't ask me to choose now. In fact RV and DD didn't even like one another at all. SO, you had a coach setting a winning record in conference play and an AD that only supplied minimal support to him. Only at UNT..........😠 -
OH ABSOLUTELY!

It was Hayden Fry who came in and set about to change the culture of the athletic department. Toward that end he took the nickname that was being used for the defense and made it the nickname for the whole team. He then changed the shade of green that the teams wore, and he had someone create a very unique Logo for the Helmet. Which happened to be a "stylized Eagle".....aka the "flying worm". The Eagle is our mascot, and Mean Green is our nickname. Thank you Sydney Sue Graham. And thank you Hayden Fry.

I hope that your source is correct. C-4 is doing a fantastic job as the starting QB. I've often wondered how much better he would be doing if he had been here in the spring.
-
You have it correct. We are currently 5-4, and three more make 12.

1 foot/yard from the goal line is where two things are pretty important. 1. You need to have linemen who are not only big, but they are also very strong for their size and quick off the line. THEN you need a RB that is a cross between a bowling ball and a battering ram........and also very quick off the line. Someone with very well developed thighs. Attaway used to be that guy, and our current "lost for the season RB" Harris (#44 on your program) appeared to be that kind of guy. If those two things are not doable, then you need a tight end who has very sure hands and is good at fighting for the ball. That would be Oscar Hammond (#23 on your program) who I never saw out on the field yesterday. Considering the injury attrition that has gone on this year, I would say that Morris and his staff have cobbled together an impressive group of scrappers/overachievers. For example, our starting RB yesterday, (who I am very impressed with) is a converted WR transfer from Kansas St.

Who's back from injury for the Army game. I am assuming that whatever took C-4 to the sideline (in great pain) has been attended to. Porter left the game twice with what looked like (boy language wise) a separated shoulder. Does any "insider" have any info on him and other missing starters from early in the season?

Brief History of the Mean Green
SilverEagle replied to Glory to the Green's topic in Mean Green Football
Actually, the whole defense. Randy Galloway did the story back in 1967 The Mean Green Moniker – University of North Texas Athletics -
If the starting QB for Army plays then I predict that this will be another 2007 UNT vs Navy game. If the Army defense has pretty average pass coverage, then I lean toward us for a win. If they are as good in pass coverage as they are in run coverage, then.....who knows.

He's so fleet of foot that he turns a lot of what used to be "running for your life" plays into what looks like planned plays.

I agree with this assessment. I don't know if the "no quitting" is a Morris culture thing, or if it is a combination of Morris not quitting, and the players that he brought in having that same attitude and/or belief in themselves. Just off the top of my head, the players that really impress me with their "never say die" attitude are C Morris, Porter, Sides, Carnes, Sheffield, and Hammond. If the fans ever had a means to be involved in the game besides their random clapping/cheering at big plays, we might have fewer leave early in the game.

We have at least three examples of players with two years of experience getting into the HOF. None of them were involved in a Bowl. John Love Vidal Carlin Barry Moore Anyone is welcome peruse the list if they want. North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame - University of North Texas Athletics

Another huge opportunity lost
SilverEagle replied to meangreenfaninno's topic in Mean Green Football
Sorry, Decatur beat Jacksboro that night 20-16. Our star RB was put out of the game about the middle of the 4th quarter. It fell to our QB (who later went to NT) to pull a Chandler Morris-like drive using mainly our receivers to score the winning TD. The receiver was juggling the ball as he was backing over the goal line and finally had control as he hit the ground. -

If the Army defense has terrible pass coverage, then we could end up in another 2007 North Texas/Navy game that ended in Navy winning 74-62. I remember that we won the toss and took the ball first. We immediately scored and then kicked an on-side kick, which we got. We then went up 14-0. I remember turning to the person next to me and saying "Holy S##T Todd Dodge just made a statement about how our defense was going to do tonight". Only they did worse. -

I agree that the AD (and any of his staff who are high-energy-rah-rah people) and coaching staff need to get out into the campus and the community to ask/cajole the people to become full time fans of the our athletic program. In addition, they need to bring the band (or a manageable portion of it) with them. We certainly need wins, and as high profile a win as possible. BUT (and hear it comes.....the C word) we need to change the culture at the same time. The spirit organizations need engage the fans in the stands as much as possible in generating crowd noise, instead of that relentless canned noise. At the end of the game the crowd should feel that they were a big factor in the win. THAT is what keeps people coming back. Gymnastics by the cheer squad and silly games during time out are not what builds a FAN CULTURE. Coach Morris comes from a west Texas community that lives and breaths sports. Those people are not just hones hard working people...they are HARD WORKING PEOPLE......who don't whine about the game time of their football games. I understand Coach Morris and his frustration with us because I came from a similar community as Shallowater. When I was in HS (right about the time that we killed off the last of the dinosaurs), we had a real, REAL intense rivalry with the Jacksboro Tigers. In 1966 the game was a home game, and the highest rated game in all of the metroplex for that Friday night. Jacksboro was rated #1, and we were rated about #2 or #3. I was in the band, so the morning of the game, we walked over to the football field to knock any ruff edges off our presentation. As I approached the fence on the north side of the stadium, I spotted two pickups parked next to the fence that I had never seen before. As I walked past them, I noticed "Jacksboro Tigers" stickers on both trucks. I don't know when they had arrived but this was 8:30 in the morning. The Stadium was SRO that night. BEFORE we (the band) entered the stadium to take our place in the stands both concession stands were sold out of Hot Dogs. Both crowds had a big part in the outcome of the game. Coach Morris was right.
