  1. Yes, I've seen them. Even drunk, I was always still like, "uhhh...no, but at least she has something going for her". My friend Spence, on the other hand, has no such compunctions.
  2. I was thinking about this during the Cowboys' game today. Not sure if the NCAA rule is different from the NFL one, so there might be different *correct* answers. Okay, there's a fumble. Same team recovers. It's the next down. BUT...when does it become a 1st down? Does an opposing player have to TOUCH it first, or GAIN and then LOSE POSSESSION, when the original team comes back in and recovers? I thought it was a possession-based rule but now that I've thought about it, I'm not completely sure. And again...is it the same in the NFL as it is in the NCAA?
  3. 1) You must be one of the few who thinks that the few decent attractions Pohl, Jackson, Bataille, and co. have added make the rest of it look decent. Some fat, ugly chicks have cool clothes or nice skin, but that doesn't make them hot. If you disagree, maybe you're as drunk when you walk around campus as you are when you pick up those fat, ugly chicks with cool clothes. 2) I hope that your comments about me were intended to be humorous. If not, I would hope that you would speak to me in the same manner in person. Really. 3) You must have had better - or zero - dealings with "the process" than I. If you automatically assume that this thing will look good, have amenities desired by most, etc., you are most certainly disillusioned. Lots of things at UNT start with good intentions and end up as complete crap. We can hope that this will fall into the "library mall, Rec Center, etc" arena, but as I pointed out on Ponyland, trusting in something like that is a bad idea. Ever tried to find your way through the Music Building without a guide? Know the background of the Art Building, Wooten Hall, Willis Library, Chemistry Building...need I go on? Some misguided friends of mine tried to combat "money for athletics" with "money for a new library". They knew how funding worked and were just trying to play on uninformed students' issues. However, the gorgeous "library mall" would look better if it wasn't a part of an area built by a dedicated bomb shelter. As far as the Baptist (Student Ministry, I think?)...they own their very small plot of land. UNT can make polite requests, but as long as it meets city codes, nothing else can be done about their land.
  4. As far as the matter at hand... I'd have to see what happens. I'm mostly working for myself now and things are looking up, but we'll have to see what kind of money I make from my pursuits. If they (Athletics) were interested, I could coordinate an art auction with other alums and supporters of UNT. Do you guys have any idea how many artists in the area went to UNT? We did a show last weekend and it was freaking nuts. And a lot of the artists who I KNOW who still live in the area weren't there. As far as corporations go, employer matching is a big deal. If you work for a fairly big company and have proof of your donation, most will match it to the same recipient. Some will even double it, depending upon the amount. You can basically donate $500 and turn it into $1000-1500. That works for all areas-Athletics, Scholarships, etc. Plus, it's tax deductible for both you and your employer. Keep it in mind for future donations. And for those who seem confused by the comments, the MGC thing seems to be on a case-by-case basis, doesn't seem to follow any sort of rational pattern, and some of us have tried to resolve things. It HAS been beaten to death and doesn't need to be DEBATED. Those who are fine with it, leave it alone, and the rest should already know what's in progress and wait for me to email you (or ask me to if you haven't already).
  5. lol...nice reference. After such an effed-up year not only with games but also coaching changes, I too will be happy to know that the unlikely doesn't happen. Who knows where anyone will go, who can win, etc. after this nutty year...
  6. Originally I hadn't thought of this, and a couple of the SGA and Greek people mentioned it to me. I brought it up at our Athletics Council meeting, and everybody thought it was a good idea. For some reason (admin at the time?), it never happened. Maybe this time, if the current SGA or somebody else "officially" recommends it, it might happen.
  7. I always thought Charlie Brown was a blockhead and would do a backflip and fall down every time he went after the football.
  8. Haven't been watching much ESPN lately so I missed the announcement. Never lived in either, but I've visited both areas, so my opinion might surprise you. It's worse to live in WV. Ann Arbor doesn't have all that much to offer, but I would guess that a well-paid football coach could make a good bit out of it. West Virginia is mostly an armpit of mining with some fresh manure-filled air of farmland. I'd take that cold little Michigan college town over WV (the whole state) any day.
  9. Adler, do you get a percentage? I don't know about the "No HS coaches" thing. Our record doesn't show how much TD has done as HC. Maybe amend the statement as "No more HS coaches in Position X or Y"...a bit more collegiate coaching experience to stir in the pot with the "fresh, new" HS coaching would be a good idea...but I wouldn't say the season was a total flop, regardless of our record!
  10. Why not both?! You guys have to admit this was a funny post though. Especially if you know who "Diet Coke boy" is. He used to be "microphone wire guy". I went to the link Emmitt gave and weighed in...but not against SMU. Were you guys not among almost everyone else I knew that thinks most of our campus looks freaking ugly? I'm hoping our stadium doesn't fit in with all of that too well. Perfect example...I had to spend most of my time in Wooten Hall, which (along with the library) was designed with "bomb shelter" in mind. Literally.
  11. I think TCU based their whole season on beating UT and fell apart when that didn't happen.
  12. I'm curious what other tests, if any, preceded the...heh..."testes" test...
  13. I bring this up every few years. The south is notoriously bad for wrestling, but there are quite a few in the area that have wrestling programs, some quite good. And of course wrestling is a cheap sport to support. We used to have quite a team back in the 70's. I haven't looked at our Title 9 info in a few years, but...aren't we now able to add a men's program? If so, it's a big mess between baseball, rugby, lacrosse, hockey, and wrestling, all of which have shown some degree of success at UNT at one time or another. But again, wrestling is notoriously cheap to support. And there are a lot of guys in the REGION (not just the state) that were great in HS and don't go on to compete in college, which gives a wealth of talent to tap into. When we had it as a club sport when I was still enrolled there were quite a few state qualifiers/champions that showed up for love of the sport. More than a couple would probably be happy to help coach, as would I (though I'm not much for head-coach material, more like a systems and drills coach). Any thoughts?
  14. That's a cool addendum. For those of you who know the details, doesn't it sound like something I would do? Lamar is a "name school". Not huge, but I think they have the potential. I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing them in the Belt (until we hopefully move up in 5-10 years!).
  15. Haha I know it's in bad taste...hell, even I wouldn't do that. And sometimes I try to be tasteless on purpose. It's disgustingly tacky, but there's nothing anyone can do about it, because if they wanna be tacky a-holes, as long as they stay within Constitutional limits, that's their crazy-ass right!
  16. Don't get me wrong, you're totally right, but according to the law, he was within his rights. Again, you might see a civil case filed that works its way up, but the letter of the law is such that his giddy ass was still following it, if just barely.
  17. I caught this on the news. The thing is, if your neighbor is being robbed, you can only use deadly force in situations where the neighbor is a family member, asked you to watch their house, etc. there is a caveat, however; if they rob your neighbor, and your neighbor DOES NOT fit that legal model, and then they cross your property line, you are still allowed to use deadly force. The neighbor wasn't family and didn't ask him to watch their house. He waited till they crossed over onto his property to shoot. Since he has a weapon to protect his property, I'm guessing this dude is WAY up on his Texas-specific 2nd Amendment Laws. He's gonna walk. Any attempt by the families will be thrown out. I heard the extended version of the phone call and an interview with the DA and 2 lawyers. Nobody can touch him because he followed Texas laws to the letter. The only hope the families have is to take it to court and then appeal it to have Texas laws overturned. With conservative Circuits and Supreme Court members, I don't see that happening any time soon!
  18. The only reason it's a big deal is because of the internet. Otherwise, VT and PSU probably wouldn't even know about the costumes. As they mentioned, it's free speech rights. Not like they showed up at a VT game wearing it. And...I don't think PSU's campus enrollment is 90k, I think that includes "satellite schools". Up north they like to refer to it in the aggregate. It's like if UT included UTA, UTEP, UTSA, etc. in their enrollment. Trust me, their other campuses are tiny. Everybody in PA is so obsessed with PSU and UPenn that if they can't get in, they go to another school in the system. That's probably the stat they were referring to. UT and Ohio State have been competing for #1 in enrollment for years. They are both upwards of 50K. No way PSU got 40K more students at their main campus in the last year or two. The admin up there have the same small minds as the retards I went to school with.
  19. Prolly. You can only have an all-black wardrobe for so long before you trade it in for GREEN! Especially with so many chicks who are fast machines that DON'T keep their motors clean.
  20. Yeah, but, guys...I like to stand up and scream...
  21. Tebow SHOULD win, but voters will probably wonder if it's a "fluke season" and hold off till next year. Plus, they love team records. Brennan SHOULD win, but voters hate non-BCS schools. Daniel SHOULD win for making something out of Mizzou of all places, but they lost to OU twice. I think McFadden will take it. They don't have the team record, just like Florida, but I think McFadden takes the tiebreaker for having another outstanding year. He probably should have been 2nd to any one of those guys, but I think he'll get it. I think splitting time won't hurt him at all. Since most "sports pundits" paid more attention to him and Tebow all season anyway, I think they noticed he could have had more yards if he was the only good back. On a related note, I see Darren and Felix both going in the 1st round, maybe Felix in the 2nd. Remember USC from...crap, was that last year or the year before?
  22. We'll find out tomorrow. I feel bad for Dixon though. If he had stayed healthy and they won those last 3, he'd nearly be a shoo-in. Or is it shoe-in? The first makes more sense, shooing something in a particular direction. The second sounds like a shoehorn or something. Not sure if I've ever seen it in print.
  23. I really don't ever see myself wanting to be on "that side of the stadium". But...I'm willing to hear about others' experiences. Were you all students, or at least in the student section at some point? Also, I've read on here that sometimes the pulse of the crowd over there is okay, but for the most part, and from my experience watching from across the way, it seems pretty dismal. Basically, how would you describe your experiences holding season tix?
  24. Sorry I haven't been on in a couple of days, otherwise I could have helped to make more sense of some of this as far as funding goes. Some of the following information may be old news to some people, but it might help. Refer to the quotes below when unraveling why I'm pointing out some specifics. Structures such as the Rec Center and a new stadium are auxiliary structures. As such, we can't get state funding for them. We can, however, be "bonded", which is basically a University's version of a mortgage. The amount of interest paid in bonding depends on the rating we get for a bond for a given structure, and Phil Diebel's office could explain that a lot better than I can. The Rec Center problem wasn't that enough money wasn't raised, it was that there were some problems mid-construction and the company was trying to change their price. I believe the Regents did help, but the problem was that the company tried to change their price quote on a state contract mid-construction. The student fee was already set, and the amount wasn't going to be enough to cover the excess that they wanted. If I recall correctly, I think some materials and labor costs may have gone up since the original quote. Sue Delmark at UNT Rec or Dr. Jacobs' office (Student Development) would probably have more info on how they made up the difference, but I do know that in the end the construction company didn't get as much of an increase as they had requested. With such auxiliary structures and bonds, you do have to show how the money will be raised. The other quote below refers to one of those methods. However, don't be too terribly surprised to see a designated Stadium Fee proposed through the Student Government soon. On the other hand, there was an issue in 1990 or 1991 with the new bleachers being paid out of Student Service Fees, and after the fact that money had to be repaid and the initial money went into a scholarship fund. If you can find Bill Miller (SGA Pres around 1990 and "HomeCondom King" right before or after, I forget), he can explain it better...as can, again, Phil Diebel or someone else in Finance. It was a big clusterf***, but I think the problem was that the money was incorrectly designated...so, to make a long story short, I'm still pretty sure that a temporary "designated fee" could help. Otherwise, if they show a decent amount of donations to date, increase in donations for such a cause over the last couple of years, etc., that should be sufficient...again, Diebel's office can tell you anything you want to know about bonds for state entities. Basically, the whole thing is a big pain in the ass. My freshman year (1996-97) is when RLSS (Rec/Leisure Studies Society) initially proposed the new Rec Center. We went through student surveys, multiple votes, 2 state legislative votes, traveling across the country to discuss funding, facilities, staffing, etc. with Universities that had similar facilities to the one we were hoping to get, dissent among students and within Student Government...it was quite a hassle. Athletics has a much better fundraising base, as well as people who research stuff like this on a regular basis, so I think as long as any bonding issues work out as we would hope, it will probably be a much easier process than was the Rec Center...unless, of course, a designated student fee (sorry I didn't define it sooner, it seems pretty obvious but it's a specific fee above and beyond what you pay in general fees, like your library fee, rec center fee, Union fees, etc) comes into the picture...then there's a whole new can of worms and it's a major pain. Let's just hope their fundraising will be sufficient to take care of it in the long run. The point is that we don't need $40 million, we probably need to show that money in hand and money pledged and not received is...I'm making an educated guess here, but probably about $10-14 million since we don't have a designated fee (guaranteed revenue) for it yet. Hope this helped...at least a little... Jesse
