Don't Mess With Texas
JesseMartin replied to KingDL1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Good points; all of those would basically serve as mitigating factors if anyone actually tried to prosecute...as far as we've discussed this issue, does anyone have any recent news? I looked and don't see him in custody or being charged at all...though that means nothing, as many times, charges are applied weeks, or even months or years, after the fact. -
Okay, upsides and downsides. Let's say all three schools schedule each other yearly. Non-conference for all three, and when one or more is doing well, helps the NC schedule. Best of all, we're all close, so it's like another 2 home games for any one of us, helping out our attendance. On the other hand, all three of us have been known to be pretty crappy at one time or another, which doesn't help the "strength of schedule" issue at all if we all have a bad year at the same time. Thoughts?

Screw that, don't look when it's crowning and don't cut the cord. Forget the nasty traditions! Emmitt's now been 100% made into an "honest man", God save us all. We could have a mini-Mean Green squad on our hands soon!

Yeah, in case anyone didn't believe the above about it being a different DD, look at the years. They're talking about him being on staff at other places while he was HC here.

Good-natured Ribbing Vs. "calling Out"
JesseMartin replied to JesseMartin's topic in Mean Green Football
I get your point, but, hell, I dunno about you guys, but every time for about 10 years that I let somebody talk to me like that, they ended up beating the hell out of me, so I got to where I realized I couldn't let somebody talk certain ways to me...though you can still be cool about it if you're just joking around. But when somebody gets this attitude with you, calling you out, those are fighting words, and if it's not being said in jest then whoever said it shouldn't be surprised if something happens. I was trying to clear the air but Little Green D!ckb@g and co. wanted to make an issue out of me being nice, so fine. Let's just see what happens in the future. Screw congeniality, obviously. I'll be happy to play their little games, but I also have enough balls that I'll do the same thing in person if it comes down to it. Little Green S#!tball can call me out online but we'll see if he has any real balls. Hell, he even called me out after I was trying to calm down things after some of his previous bull$#!t statements. -
Good-natured Ribbing Vs. "calling Out"
JesseMartin replied to JesseMartin's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, so much for trying to quell things. 422 ne 32nd 75050. Come on over and say it yourself...douche. See above. Never mind the whole thing. Some of you obviously just prefer being anonymous d!cks. I was hoping that maybe since we are on this board because of common ground, maybe we could be civil for the same reason. Obviously, I was wrong. I still think anyone who talks like Little B!tch Man should have the balls to do so in person. -
Don't Mess With Texas
JesseMartin replied to KingDL1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Not really "all better"...all else held equally, I tend to vote Republican. The R's did take care of some long-due business starting in 1994, but as of late have been spending worse than most Dems ever do. Remember, he was a FEDERAL prosecutor. He worked on issues involving FEDERAL law. Texas state law is entirely different from federal law, and he wasn't an appellate judge or anything. This case would go in an entirely different legal direction than his legal expertise. Actually, that is correct, but in assault cases. In burglary cases, there are some very specific rules of law that he did follow. Again, we have a federal prosecutor talking about STATE law in a FEDERAL sense, which makes no ACTUAL sense, because he was talking about general principles, not letter of the law in the state. I think the dude was pretty trigger-happy, but he certainly seemed to know his Texas rights...or else he was very lucky (see my previous post in this thread for more info. on exactly how he had to do it to be within the law). Also please remember...true Republicans favor states' rights over federal alignment, so be careful when some "expert" comes in and talks about something when it's not even his area of expertise! -
Is Unt Your Family?
JesseMartin replied to JesseMartin's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I don't think something like that is what they would be interested in...most of their stories are profiles of people who are fairly "big-time" now. I passed up law school or teaching (for now) to see if I could make it on my own in the art biz...don't really see them wanting to know about somebody who is in a transition period. But I do like hearing about how being a part of this community has changed others' lives as well. I've heard quite a few great stories from other North Texans I've met, so I figured there might be one or two more on here. -
Regardless of our differences on this board, I like a lot of you guys, and miss the connection I felt with my fellow students beginning on August 21, 1996 at 5:04 pm. In my odd, new complete openness, I'll throw this out here to see if others have had experiences that are similarly special. I don't see the point in hiding a lot of this anymore. I first attempted suicide at age 11, then again at 13 and 17. I hated being alive, waking up, dealing with my crazy a-hole family and classmates and pretty much everybody else. I got a chance for a fresh start at North Texas and I took the scholarship. After everything that came before, I looked at it as having 27,000 friends to make. At first, I fit in with the other "creative types", but eventually got along with a lot of Greeks and others who fairly well fit the mold of the preppie jocks and snots that treated me like crap the rest of my life. People completely different from me were, at times, some of my biggest supporters in life. I felt like I actually belonged somewhere. For a few years, I didn't even want to die. Then, after some really bad times, even more people who were completely different from those I would expect to give a crap jumped in and pushed me to continue being better than I thought I could be, and stuck with me through things people don't usually talk about. North Texas made me see so many things differently, not the least of which was myself. To this day, nearly everyone in my life was a part of my North Texas experience. They have replaced a family whose members did everything up to and including one member trying to kill me. As if that weren't enough, my wife is my first college girlfriend who was afraid of relationships but, like me, couldn't be successful in any that weren't ours, and literally saved my life. What makes UNT special is the people, at least for me. I can pretty much guarantee that I would never have been around this long if not for them. And I sure as hell would never have had the balls to make public statements like this, unless left in a letter for whoever might find it.

Niiiice. You know how I know you're gay? You make yourself sandwiches on sourdough bread. I, for one, hate Jessica Simpson. My dumbass sister idolizes her because she's a dumb blonde with a lot of money, just what she (my sister) wants to be. What a career goal..what a role model. Say what you will about Nick Lachey, but he gave up the "playa's life" for her stupid ass, and no matter how much you hate boy-band pop, you have to admit, he's got star quality all around-build, looks, voice, whatever. And from what I read and from what my friends in Cali tell me, he's a really cool, laid-back guy, not like most celebs. Romo's stock (as a person, not a player) dropped with me when I found out that that scary rumor (hooking up with Simpson) was true. His stock as a player dropped when it was obvious that a borderline-retarded hottie could distract him enough to make the Cowboys lose a "gimme" game.

I'm concerned that, at times, due to the fact that it can be hard to get across your intentions in printed words online, some of us might be getting pissed due to miscommunication. For instance, you might be joking with somebody and they might think you're calling them out. I, for one, don't like being called out, and expect that if you want to be a jerk, you should back it up in person. On the other hand, some might think that it is just the nature of discussion and doesn't really mean anything...trying to joke around but it comes off as what amounts to fighting words. I'm not sure if I'm alone here, but I'd like to try to come to an accord as far as letting each other know if we're being good-natured about things or basically "getting in somebody's face". Not sure about the rest of you guys, but I grew up in a situation both social and familial where if you made it obvious that you were presenting a challenge, as opposed to just being jokingly mean to your buddy, it meant you were ready to go toe-to-toe. It's one thing to beat somebody with superior intellect. However, it goes beyond debate when you make certain types of statements. It's also not cool if we get a bad attitude with another poster if they were just kidding with us, and I think I may have been guilty of that a couple of times. Aside from using smileys and stuff, are there ways we can ensure our intent is a bit more obvious when we say something a bit negative? Just trying to open things up a bit. Thanks.

Don't Mess With Texas
JesseMartin replied to KingDL1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I really feel the need to rephrase what I posted early on in this topic. All but maybe one or two of the gun-owners I know are very responsible, and as such, make sure they know practically everything there is to know about their rights to shoot somebody. I heard the tape of the 911 call and the interview with the DA, and it really sounds like this guy was the same way. He knew the ins and outs of the law. Most Texas gun-owners do...we COULD debate about whether or not those laws should exist in their current form, but as the laws stood when he shot the guys, though he was "on the border" of violating them, he BARELY stuck to the laws...get a jury in Texas that would convict, either in criminal or civil court...I doubt you could find one. As far as the R/D debate reborn...am I the only one who finds it odd that the Republicans have had problems with fiscal responsibility, and that many of their accusers are other Republicans? Imagine a modern Republican president with advisors who know what they're doing. Sorry to both sides...Bush isn't that smart, but he's not stupid either...regardless, he's not exactly a genius on issues regarding the economy. He had to "dance with who brung him", so to speak, to keep enough hard-core conservatives on his side. Analysts have a theory about why presidents do things seemingly out of character in their last year or so in office when they're two-termers. I think Bush's policy stances look better this year than they ever did...and I wonder what could have been if he hadn't been indebted to the GOP so much that he had to cowtow to them the first 6 1/2 years. -
Esl
JesseMartin replied to eulesseagle's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Yep, Belgium, Luxembourg, and some other country in the region have THREE official languages. I don't know about mandating it, but I think multilinguism is a good idea. We're raising our baby in 4 languages (I speak 2 well and 1 poorly, she speaks an additional one well). They learn languages best before age 7. -
That might even be funnier than the 14? 15? lateral play this year that was all over ESPN. And the Manning thing...I'm pretty sure it was upheld...does anybody know for sure? Just thought of this recently...how's this for a trick play... In a no-huddle offense, the QB starts at one end and gives each player a high-five, slap, word of encouragement, whatever. Then gets to the center and takes the ball and goes for it. Cheesy, yes, but I think I've seen weirder ideas work.

Am I the only one who thinks that maybe it can all be boiled down to "God is a really good scientist"? Everything is still theory at this point, and most arguments on both sides have already been covered in this thread. If you look at it objectively...IF there is a creator of all things, wouldn't it be realistic to assume he/it/whatever would be pretty good at, oh, SCIENCE? Of course that follows a lot of "faith" arguments, but if you think about it, it kinda makes sense. And let's not get started on the whole "proofs for God" thing. If you're totally against thinking there might be a creator/higher power/whatever, then this post won't matter to you...but it does seem sensible to me that if there is a God, he's probably quite a bit more up on science than we are, which would explain why we haven't gotten any level of certainty. Maybe somebody with a higher level of consciousness would know a little more than we about the development of the world.

Couldn't find anybody close for football games. Anybody near me for B-ball? I'm right off of 30 and MacArthur.

Hey, let's all try to do something totally positive that doesn't involve debating (much). I liked the ideas for getting HS kids to games for free, and wondered what other ideas we could come up with. I already mentioned the art auction idea, which I think could go over well if done right. We raised a TON of money last week at Art Conspiracy, why not use our UNT artistic resources and networking to do the same? Some alums and friends of the University LOVE art, and LOVE donating, so why not do both? Who else has some ideas to raise money, boost attendance, etc? Maybe if we get some really good ones, we could forward them and see what happens.

I wondered that too. And the QB is also not exempt...does anybody remember when Peyton Manning did that trick play, where he got set under center, then called an audible, and while he was calling it, they hiked it to the RB? It was last year. They called him for illegal motion because once the QB is under center, they can't give the ball to somebody else before he gets it. But yeah, people move A LOT. Anybody know the answer to his question?

Sporting News Radio College Bowl Pick'em

Tried it. Can't highlight the other numbers. Just checked my settings and everything's fine. I have Windows XP, maybe that's the problem...? I would hope not. It's not THAT old. -
I was hoping you were referring to Walt Flanagan and his dog, a.k.a. Tripod. Apologies to those missing the reference (which I would assume would be most of you).

I can neither drag nor drop a damned thing. What the hell am I clicking on? I get the 4-point-compass cursor that won't let me select anything. -

Maybe whoever buys them will want my old G.I. Joes. I'm sellin' 'em cheap. -
Always. Remember, there is a huge difference between "a bit more lovin'" and "Daaaaaammmmnnn!" Yes, they will, which is why I prefer "a bit more lovin'" to both "skinny" and "Daaaaammmmmnnn!" A more moderate approach yields, in my opinion, the most desirable of results

I saw that. So sad. I wanted to play
