I agree. I saw that game and we were robbed. When we played Clemson a couple of years ago their head coach who was on that Arkansas team, told his Clemson players not to take us lightly because that Arkansas team considered North Texas the second best team {behind Texas} and the best quarterback they played that year. There is another story that they were considering not even scouting us and decided to do so at the last minute. When the scouting coach returned he said they had better get busy because we were quite capable of beating them. I think we really did.

Make that year '68

That is so weird, Plumm, I remember the night Meredith said that as well. See my post.

The '69 team by all odds. Just ask Arkansas. We would probably have finished no lower than 3rd that year if we had been in the SWC and that was when the SWC was still one of the stronger conferences. I think the '59 team would have to be ranked pretty high as well even though they lost the Sun Bowl that year. I have always heard they partied a bit too much in Mexico the night before the game.

Nevertheless, we are the 3rd or 4th largest school in the state, have been playing football before Houston, Tech, or Texas State were founded and are the only state D1 program within 200 miles or so of DFW. We also have more alumni around here than Texas or A&M. One would think, therefore, that it would be to the DMN's advantage to give us more coverage than a occasional send in piece from Brett Vito and the DRC. Admittedly, SMU has been more more successful than we have in the past few years, but how much of a readership can they provide when they have so few fans? Having said all that, if we keep winning, going to bowls and increasing attendance we will see more coverage. The DMN is a business, after all, and they are desperate to sell newspapers. If they see a market out there, they will crater to that market and it is up to us to provide that market. GMG

Pegram is a ball Peen hammer and Jimmerson is a tack hammer. We need both. -

You are right, Green PI, we would need a backup alright, but the Model A should be there. They drove that thing down to Austin once, but it still had gasoline engine then. -

Perfect. Perhaps pulling a trailer full of cheerleaders throwing green candy. With our school colors, we should always be represented in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. -
We have seemed to almost break through to bigger and better things once every decade or so - the late fifties, late sixties, mid- seventies and early oughts come to mind, but we have never been able to sustain our success. I believe this time is different. We are out of the shadow of the SWC, we have a wonderful new stadium and a real and dedicated coach. The enthusiastic student response this year is unprecedented and the activity fee they passed has given them a real stake in this program. The Mean Green Club is growing and who knows, there may be more and more deep pockets out there that just might take notice of our recent success. I am optimistic.

I thought we had some in '59 as well. In fact, I thought we made the top twenty that year. I can't believe we did not get any in Joe Greene's Junior and senior year. We were at least the 2nd or 3rd best football team in Texas in '68 and Arkansas considered us the best team outside of Texas they played that year during the regular season. They also considered Steve Ramsey the best quarterback they faced all year.

I just hope we have a few afternoon games again and that they run the shuttle for more than two games.

Off-season questions series No. 1 — Who takes over at QB?
ragpicker replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm still waiting to see why Brock was so highly rated in high school. I really hope that the talent people saw back then asserts itself in the spring.- 22 replies

Apogee will expand when it is necessary to expand. That could be in two or three years or never. It depends on the success of the team and the support of the fans. We need to continue what we accomplished this year and continue to improve year after year. I personally see an expansion sooner than later.

Excellent point. "adman" and one that needs to be stressed over and over again.

If we put something on our helmet there must be a color contrast with the helmet color, otherwise it just blends in and is not distinctive.

Bring back the old, OLD Scrappy. I want the one from the fifties with a scowl on his face and tough the little scrappy looking body. Every Scrappy since him has been a pumped up cliche'. The old, old Scrappy is a real icon who sort of reminds me of the Kansas Jayhawk. Perhaps someone could put him up on this board. I don't know how. I am old too (and scrappy).

TCU, SMU, UTA, UNT in Metroplex 4: Not so fast
ragpicker replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I have been advocating this idea for a long time and even have an idea for a name for this round robin - The "Trinity Series", with the winner winning the Trinity Cup. With DART. DCTA and the TRE we even a have way for students and fans to attend many games on public transportation. I don't know why we have not been doing this for years as it would create rivalries and save on traveling expenses. IT WOULD BE FUN AND IT IS REALLY STUPID NOT TO DO IT. -
Don't be too hard on SMU. I can remember their glory days and the great crowds at the Cotton Bowl before their disgraceful actions leading to the well deserved death penalty. Time has passed Peruna by. Sic Gloria Transit. Scrappy rules today and will for years to come.

Blast from the past. I saw us beat A&M once under Blakely in the old pit. Of course they were still all white back then and had an Olympic shot put champion as a center, (Randy Matson).

I agree. As far as the Super Pit is concerned, it is a very good stadium but needs some renovation as well. It all comes down to money. We need money.
