$300k is base salary from the University system, which is a one year contract. The additional pay and 3 years is from other sources from Georgia Southern. His 3 year contract from other souces rolls back to 3 each year as long as the Eagles meet APR and win 7 games each year.

As a fan of Georgia Southern I know like many other GS fans that other schools will come looking at Fritz as HC for there school. It is what it is. When that times comes I know our AD will make a counter offer such as was made when Army hired our former HC.

Is Willie Fritz the type head coach North Texas needs to hire. YES If Willie Fritz was still the head coach at Sam Houston I feel that North Texas would have a very good chance of hiring him as the next HC at UNT. But with Fritz being at Georgia Southern, I just do not see him having any interest in the UNT job. This has nothing do with facilities, salary, or anything else except timing of when the North Texas job came open in the case of Willie Fritz

GA Southern vs App State on ESPNU Tonight
ValleyBoy replied to LongJim's topic in Mean Green Football
Fritz has stated during his time a Georgia Southern that he would like to be able to have around 15-20 pass plays each game. The Eagles problem is that they are just not very good in the passing game. Eagle fans know this and i am sure Fritz is doing his best to try an improve the Eagles passing game. -
Just a little information on Jacksonville State HC. http://www.jsugamecocksports.com/coaches.aspx?rc=447&path=football Took over a good football program. This season is only his 3rd year coaching on the college level. JSU grad.

Will it take $1,000,000 and an indoor facility?
ValleyBoy replied to Wag Tag's topic in Mean Green Football
As an outsider looking in I will give you the reasons that have been brought up by Willie Fritz at Georgia Southern for a indoor practive facility. Practice time lost due to lighting. There is a limit on the number of hours per week for practices and team meeting, when practice has to be stopped because of lighting, that is time that cannot be made up. Georgia Southern had a player hit by lighting last year while the team was under a covered palivion right beside the practice field. When practice has to be moved inside to a the rec center (basketball courts) due to lighting, the practice plans change an it is time that cannot be made up. -

After he left the business world his stated goal was to be a college football coach. Coastal Carolina took a leap of faith and hire him as their head coach. As to becoming an FBS head football coach he will get that chance with Coastal as they begin their transition to the Sun Belt. -
Sounds like Georgia Southern AD for 17 years if you add the following points. Did not understand how APR worked. Did not understand the bid process for the FCS playoffs, ect....... Thank goodness Georgia Southern got a pro athletics President that got him to announce his retirement about a year before Southern accepted the move up to the Sun Belt and replaced him with a real AD.

Georgia Tech is the only P5 running that style at this time. Also at the FBS level you only have Navy, Army, Air Force, and Georgia Southern running a triple option based offense. The offense makes it living off of defenses that do not play assignment football. Now I could see some of the lower P5 taking a chance in making a coaching hire to change to this style offense but one problem is that that there are not that many teams that run that style system so the so the coaching tree is very small. Just as an example, Paul Johnson acts as his own OC. At the FBS level the only OC that stands out and that would be Ivan Jasper the OC from Navy. Now there are several programs at the FCS level but none with very long track records, but this could change in the next few years.

It would not hurt my feeling in any way at all. While I am speaking the truth, I will add another truth. From what I have been reading on what most North Texas want in there next head coach is a offensive minded coach who will pass the ball all around the field like Baylor and TCU. That is not Willie Fritz's offense. His offense is a spread option run offense thats passing game only works when the running game is working. If you do not believe me just check the numbers. Also another fact is that when Georgia Southern hired Willie Fritz the Eagles fanbase would have been calling for the AD head on a platter if the new head coach ran any type offense that was not an run option based offense. The reason for this is that all Georgia Southern football success has been with this type offense. The Paul Johnson Georgia Tech offense was born at Georgia Southern which all Georgia Southern fans still see as a Georgia Southern offense.

Yes, North Texas would be a increase in salary for Fritz, but I feel like he will receive an increase in salary in the very near future from Georgia Southern somewhere in the 600,000 to 700,000 dollar range which would be in the ballpark of what North Texas payed McCarney. As far as the difference in conference and facilities, I see no difference between Georgia Southern and North Texas. Also a difference between Georgia Southern and North Texas for the next several years is Georgia Southern is in a reloading mode.whereas North Texas will be in a total rebuilding mode. Also ONE other difference between North Texas and Georgia Southern is that one demands that there Coach wins whereas the other just hopes there coach wins.

Here is Willie Fritz original contract with Georgia Southern. http://issuu.com/thega/docs/willie_fritz_la14-639 7 wins automatic rollover combined with APR of 940+. It's 3 years in addition to the rollovers. Buyout is 3 years of base pay.

Joe Moglia is 66 years old and is only coaching because he wants too, not for the money but just for the challenge. He will retire from coaching from Coastal Carolina. -
As a fan of Georgia Southern who has been following the Mean Green program from afar since my nephew graduated from North Texas, I just wanted to put in my two cents on the Mean Green's next head football coaching hire. I feel like the next Head Coach at North Texas needs to be a coach in the same mold as Willie Fritz. If the Mean Green are able to hire Fritz away from Georgia Southern it would be a slam dunk hire. Now after saying that here are my reasons why Fritz would not leave Georgia Southern for North Texas. 1. It would be a sideways move for Fritz. If you look at the coaching moves that Fritz has made during his coaching career, he has always moved up the food chain not sideways. JUCO (Blinn), D2 (Central Missouri), FCS (Sam Houston), FBS/G5 (Georgia Southern). 2. The only thing that North Texas could offer is more money than Georgia Southern to Fritz. It could even be seen as a step backwards by some. since Fritz already has all the pieces in place at Georgia Southern to keep winning instead of a total program rebuild. 3. Just my gut feeling but I feel like Willie Fritz will only leave Georgia Southern for a Power 5 school or a much higher profile G5 school than North Texas. Best of luck in your coaching search. I hope the Mean Green make the right hire.

McCarney to take long look at roster and signing day thoughts
ValleyBoy replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I might be wrong but my understanding is that any new players that are brought in for the spring semester do not count against the 25 that can be signed in Feb to start next Fall. Example of this would be JUCO and grayshirts that start school in Jan. Also any walk-on players that are awarded a ship would not count against the 25 number. -

I would not schedule the same non conference team each and every year. I feel it would be best try and schedule a 2 game home/away with one of the other state teams then schedule another one of them. Over eight years you would have a two game home/away series with Houston, SMU, TCU, and UTSA.

Here's the problem with our scheduling
ValleyBoy replied to MeanGreenHoops's topic in Mean Green Football
If you look at a map of the western part of the country you can see why USC. UCLA have not played and FCS school which is also the same reason that Colorado & Washington have also not played and FCS team. There are just not that many FCS football schools in the western part of the country which becomes a factor when scheaduling games for western FBS schools. -
You would think that they should have know what the rules were after running into the problem earlier with not enought credit hours.

With Conference USA set to have 12 members next season and 14 by 2015, they will likely play an 8-game conference schedule, C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky told the Charlotte Observer. http://www.fbschedules.com/2012/06/c-usa-likely-play-8-game-conference-football-schedule/ -
Just feed back on the fact that Berglund might not be the saving grace that some think. I will have to take a wait and see approach. I hope that he lives up to his billing but only time will tell.
