I firmly hate the UNT branding. When you leave the Metroplex, there's a significant drop in the odds someone knows what you're referencing. As someone who now lives out of state, it's easier to explain that I went to North Texas instead of answering the follow-up question of "where's UNT?" Leave it to Central Florida and some of these other schools who are OCD about going by an acronym because they feel they've earned the right to be a brand. It's one of the dumbest things in college athletics.

That I don’t know, but a bunch of media members who are alums got them. A nice gesture and an easy way to get publicity. Very smart move.

OK, I’ll bite. This is an absolutely absurd take and some of y’all need to check yourselves. Since I graduated in 2013, I’ve always had a ton of pride in North Texas. My UNT lanyard has been on nearly all my press credentials over the years — from UIL championships to the Super Bowl. Last year I got involved with a scholarship program at the Mayborn. A winning football program is great. But it is not worth it for a program we can’t be proud of. You can win whatever with Art Briles and none of it will matter. It is not worth it and UNT should always strive for being better than that. Ben Baby

@TheReal_jayD, I think that's part of the point I made earlier. Because Baylor wasn't really transparent about anything involving its investigation, it's impossible to know who was at fault for what happened. Briles got rolled because he was the head coach. And trust me, I went back and forth with Lane when Kendal got his first job on that FAU staff in '17 and he literally shrugged his shoulders and we kept walking past each other. So the criticism isn't just reserved for North Texas.

Did Sigma Chi lose the 2010 Intramural Flag Football championship? (the answer is yes to both, btw). Heck of a call on my ID, though. Don't think that's happened on GMG yet.
-
re: @Cr1028, Baylor's investigative report said "football coaches or staff met directly with a complainant and/or a parent of a complainant and did not report the misconduct." But since the report didn't name any of those coaches except Briles, it's impossible to know who's directly at fault. The link to that report for anyone interested: https://www.baylor.edu/thefacts/doc.php/266596.pdf

I figured people on here wouldn't really care that much, but the ties to Art Briles should be mentioned at the very least. Will be curious to see if Seth talks about the vetting process and if they were different from the ones with Wallis.

As someone very familar with that Baylor case, the school investigation essentially shielded the assistants from any public blame even though it's foolish to think none of them knew what was going on. And as I said earlier, Gush hasn't been able to get an FBS job until this one. Same went for Wallis.

So, it's been a long time and I don't follow UNT football like I did when I was in school, but... I like Seth personally, but does anybody else find it strange that Littrell keeps hiring people off of Briles' final Baylor staff? Gush joins Tate Wallis and Phil Bennett in that regard. And Gush hasn't been able to land an FBS gig until this one, which kinda seems suspect.

Announcers: "Benford, regardless of what happens, has something to look forward to next year." ... *something about Jeremy Combs' loss really hurting North Texas' chances to win*... "The future looks really bright." Thanks for the great analysis, fellas.

Lovely. It's terrible to see what's happened to this program, but I know that's been said plenty on these boards for a while. UNT went from a program that played for conference champions to a team that will be fortunate to win one tournament game and maybe finish .500.

Is it better to root for NT to lose or win this game? I was under the guise that a loss moves the program one step closer to ousting Benford.

MGB: UNT-Portland State running blog
MeanGreenATO replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I haven't logged in to GMG in a very long time. Once I saw UNT was down 14-0 to Portland State, I figured now was a very appropriate time. At this rate, Fry Street will be packed by the third quarter. Man oh man this is awful. -
Has UNT held you back personally?
MeanGreenATO replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
Nope. UNT has one of the best schools in my field in the state. The guy that hired me actually went to grad school at UNT, so the fact that I am a Mean Green alum helped me get my current job. -
I could see an argument both ways. Both wins were massive for the program when they both occurred.
-
Really don't know what Johnny Jones has to do with any of this. You're talking about a guy who took UNT to five straight 20 win seasons and two Sun Belt Conference titles to a guy that still hasn't finished over .500 at UNT. This was arguably UNT's biggest regular season win since the 2010 win against Texas Tech, so this was huge for Benford. But to complain about a guy with the second-most wins in school history -- especially over this -- is completely ridiculous.

Derek Thompson is a Mean Green Hero

DT won the MVP by one vote over Brelan. He definitely deserved it after what he went through today. -
Cedar Hill DE Washington: "UNT still in play..."
MeanGreenATO replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I've seen Xavier Washington play a couple times this season -- once in person -- and he was highly impressive. He was on the field with fellow UNT Target J.T. Williams (who has been offered by La. Tech, Houston and Missouri) and Washington was the best DL on the field. He was the Defensive MVP in the 5A DII title game against Katy, a very easy decision. If UNT gets him, that would be a huge, huge get.- 18 replies

Personally, I feel like it's never a good idea for people who have been fired from a publication to then talk terribly about that publication unnecessarily. I'm with Keith on this one.

I'm really hoping the Pit gets packed when everybody gets back from break. If only Tony could have thrown down that windmill on the fast break.

2012 Hs - Zach Leday - 6'7" Sf (South Florida)
MeanGreenATO replied to TheTastyGreek's topic in UNT Basketball Recruiting
Yeah I talked to him and he's going to South Florida. I believe they have another guy going to Dartmouth. Leday's a solid player for The Colony and he's one of the best players in District 4-4A. -
