SBNation: How it all began for Gonzaga
golfingomez replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I think looking at a team like Gonzaga is a great example of how long it takes to build a program if you are a mid-major and how much success is NOT linear, things tend to bounce around and it takes a while to get to a consistent level. I'm sure around 2010-2014, Gonzaga fans called for Mark Few to be fired as often as we complained about any of our coaches. It's crazy how tough it is to see what a true build is -
You've been all over South Texas! I grew up about 5 minutes north of Brownsville

agreed especially if you were comparing John Wooden's coaching ability to a piece of driftwood
-
I honestly don't know why anyone on this board would wish JJ anything but success. He did a lot of good for our program.

Mike Rhyner pays tribute to Bud, Good listen https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mike-rhyner-is-your-dark-companion/id1553515248?i=1000513467326&fbclid=IwAR2ffdWvbC-qiCXKPrsgY6m7KyQIozKX2EoGXCNG8dChXQsSNxpRvlVJVPI -
and he also lists our depth as a reason we can make a run... i think he just pulled some teams out of a hat for this article

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but Reese went to the line in OT this year with free throws to clinch the game and swished them. Similarly, he went to the line with NT up 74-72 last year against WKU and swished both free throws. From a stats standpoint, his % says he should have missed one of those, meanwhile, none of them even needed help from the rim to go through. This guy has ice water in his veins

The legendary RTVF professor has passed away. Anyone who went through that program either took one of his classes, benefitted from his knowledge or knew who he was. He was definitely someone that made going to class a joy. Despite being 50+ years older than his students, he always seemed very youthful and was willing to try to do things 'the new way' to not fall behind on the times. This is to say nothing of his external journalism career, bookwriting and professional organizations. What an all-around great person who will be missed. DRC: UNT to face Purdue in NCAA tourney

The readership should pay people for working! It's literally their job. Pretty much all local newspapers are dying/dead... Cmon people! -
I'm just happy that we can still have internet arguments even when we are winning championships
-
never crossed my mind to turn the tv off... i kept thinking... 'god, we are playing awful in this second, and the only thing we have going for us is that WKU is not in any kind of rhythm.' then when their guard travelled and turned it over i thought
-
was waiting on this.
-
Underrated
-
side note, that was a terrible strategy by WKU on their last possession... you have the player of the year and don't even let him touch the ball?
-
unbelievable game... I know it means nothing to the guys playing now, but for us to do this over WKU is just unbelievably poetic

Ugh, don't remind me... that one was a heartbreaker, after a run similar to this year's... also the last game with JJ (we lost and he never coached here again, per the standard statement) per my recollection, i think we shut down the program for five years after that game...
