  1. Not advocating we go back to this but, for those of you older than me, when did the 24/7 365 college football life thing start? When you were at NT in the 70s, 80s, 90s, did players have enough free time to hold down a part-time job on campus? Or over the summer instead of working out with a S/C coach and taking a full load of summer classes?
  2. Buncha y'all are gonna hate me for this but... Matte helmets suck. After the first hit and scratch, they look tired and torn up so much quicker than a normal glossy finish. When the matte clear coat gets gouged and worn the shiny color coat underneath shows through and it looks all splotchy. This is especially true with the linemen, who's shells get scuffed and beat up enough. Logo stickers don't adhere as well on a matte finish and get ripped off during a game. All it takes is one edge near a vent start lifting and dirt, grass and turf pellets get in under the glue and it's toast. So much un-necessary helmet maintenance for the equipment folks to deal with. For a bowl game or other special one-off occasion, it doesn't matter. As a regular, season-long helmet, its a terrible choice. There are a ton of high school programs around that have started using a matte helmet as they normal helmet and it's bad. They wind up looking like a middle school B team really fast. The worst are the teams that do a white matte helmet. It looks clean and fresh for the kickoff of week 1, but then they pick up every single speck of dirt they can. By the middle of October they have gray shells instead of white. The Coach Mac Era helmets have a bit of metal flake in the paint (so did the Dickey Bowl Era dark green helmets, in fact a bit more than we currently use). This includes the normal white face mask shells and the black SOW Halloween ones. I wish we'd step up the metal flake to make us stand out. Old Dominion and UTSA are doing matte helmets, so we need to stand above them. Maybe it's just the hot rod guy in me, but something like this with a ton of metal flake would look killer with the SOW on it.
  3. He's tall and thin, but not that skinny. Pretty built, especially after a year with Wintrich.
  4. It's a 2 and a half hour drive straight up I-65 from Birmingham to Nashville. Takes just as long as going from Denton to Fort Worth on a Friday afternoon.
  5. I think a lot of the small school talk is misunderstood by most people. Small school doesn't mean 30,000 students Vs 11,000 students. It means $$$$$ Vs $$. P5 people talk about the world like they're part of a country club that you can't even see from the road because they had a fence built to keep out the commoners and only other P5 people can get in. It doesn't matter that the clubhouse was designed by an architect from Rice, the course itself was designed by a UNT alum, or that the clubs they play with were designed and built by a Houston guy. Doesn't matter. Longhorn and Aggie are just gonna play their rounds and not care. Sooner is coming next time and that's ok because he's the Longhorn of Oklahoma. Oh and maybe next time we'll talk about bringing SMU dude along for a little while. He did used to tag along years and years ago until we got tired of his crap. He is always offering to buy for everyone afterwards in the clubhouse. We'll just talk about it so he sucks up to us but we'll never really invite him.
  6. I didn't believe that until I looked it up and I'm shocked. Since A&M bolted to the SEC there's nobody else even close to Texas in student body size. I hadn't realized not only that we are bigger than all the other BIG12 schools, but how much bigger we are than most of them. Then that just made me depressed.
  7. Yes. Those strobes, at the distance and height they are at, are brighter than the Sun. They will overpower the sunlight and eliminate any shadows on faces caused by the Sun. Incidentally, the photographer who shoots these large team photos on the risers, is based right in our backyard. But he is the choice for NFL teams (including the Super Bowl team photos), dozens of big universities around the country in addition to a lot of the big high schools in TX.
  8. Meh. This is more my flavor.
  9. Didn't see any game stats anywhere for Trice (#35) but I did see that Orr (#45) had two tackles for the Ravens and Brelan (#6) had 1 catch for 2 yards against the Cowgirls. Olawale (#49, and now listed as a running back) had 2 catches for 18 yards in the Raiders loss to the Vikings.
  10. It's a simple yes or no question. Would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs?
  11. Project leads to ‘sticker shock’ Convention center size scaled down after bids come back too high http://www.dentonrc.com/local-news/local-news-headlines/20140805-project-leads-to-sticker-shock.ece
  12. Was down there a few weeks ago (grab a really awesome dark grey t-shirt with just the green SOW on it) and I was talking to the manager who said they've had an influx of people looking and asking for UNT stuff and they've been talking with their suppliers about what other merchandise they can get it. She said its just taking a while for it to get ordered then made then delivered. So hopefully sometime soon Rally House will have a buttload more stuff. They already have twice what they had last year. In Flo Mo the UNT section is the same size as the OSU, K State etc areas. Baylor, TCU still bigger. All of the above still vastly eclipsed by the amount of Texas and A&M crap.
  13. Looking at his film, I think a lot of those high tackle situations had to do with him being about a foot and a half taller than the kid with the ball. It looked like the tops of some of their helmets were just about at his shoulder pads.
  14. I broke the weights down by position: DB - 185 DE - 244 DL - 262 DS - 224 DT - 277 FB - 235 K - 175 LB - 222 OL - 302 P - 172 PK - 187 QB - 210 RB - 201 TE - 242 WR - 188 Westies - 222 Add up all 110 players on the current online roster and its 228 lbs. Smallest guy on the team is Punter Eric Keena @ 6-2, 155 lbs. Biggest dude is offensive lineman Shawn McKinney @ 6-4, 358 lbs.
  15. U-G-L-Y. Now THIS is how you do an Air Force Academy alternate uniform! This should be their standard uniform in ya ask me. Or at least always wear this when they play Navy and have the Midshipmen wear Blue Angels uniforms.
  16. The Academy in Highland Village didn't have squat when I was in there about three weeks ago. Plenty of UT, A&M and TCU stuff, but only sticker, car flag and just a handful of other small crap for UNT. NO apparel anywhere.
  17. Hopefully the new Academy in Denton will be chock full of UNT stuff. Otherwise someone will deserve to lose their damn job. Not to mention the angry mob with torches and pitchforks.
  18. Obviously you've never heard the TWU basketball band play.....
