Well, being saddled with NCAA restrictions from when Sampson was there doesn't help. But he did convince 3 five-star recruits to go to OU to play basketball, so he can obviously recruit. Having Griffin definitely doesn't hurt, but he was the one that got him to go there.
-
Yeah, but the good thing about that is that it means he had success here. Like it or not, that's going to be the case with any coach we hire until we start writing bigger checks. I'm okay with having to do this again in a few years if it means we're constantly winning. And by then, I'd bet our budget has expanded. Unfortunately at UNT, we can't have our cake and eat it too. If our coaches are successful, they're going to get offers that are difficult to pass up.

The more I think about it, the more I like Capel. He's young. He's proven he can do great at a small school. He started the run of success that VCU has had over the past decade, and he did it while he was in his 20s. He's a name that people recognize. He's recruited the area before. The only real negative I can think of is the minor violation at OU. I think he's currently my favorite.

Not sure how I feel about him. Sure he was good at Indiana, but it's not difficult to be successful there. At UAB, he's only been to the NCAA tournament once(a play-in game), and they were in the tournament for 3 consecutive years before he got there.

@JonErskine = "Rumor is SF has been offered the UNT job"

I think Rick made it clear his first choice isn't going to be an assistant. That, and he hasn't even had any time to interview anyone else. -
The Sampson fiasco was much more serious than Capel, and he's been in trouble multiple times.
-
Posted this in the other thread. I really think he's gonna be in the discussion.
-
If Duke can overlook it, then why shouldn't we? I mean, it's Duke. They're like the model for staying out of trouble.
-
Yes.

How does everyone feel about Jeff Capel? Success at VCU. Coached OU to the Elite 8. Now an assistant at Duke. He's obviously recruited DFW before at OU. He's got head coaching experience. He recruited 3 guys to Oklahoma that are now in the NBA. Former player. He'd be in our price range. He's not my favorite choice, but he seems to fit the criteria pretty well.

CJ, Jordan, and Tony can all 3 play at big time schools. But if Tony leaves, it won't be to go to any other school.

I wish Johnny would have left about a month ago, because I would have been 100% on the Danny Manning bandwagon if he hadn't gotten hired by Tulsa. He got like 600k per year, and I think we could've gotten somewhere in the neighborhood of that number. I know he's never been a head coach, but he's been learning under one of the best, and I think he's gonna be a great coach. Oh, what could have been...

On Friday the 13th of the year 2012, no less.

Number 1 priority in new coach: can convince Tony to stay. If he stays, they all stay.
-
I could really use one at the moment.
-
McMahon just tweeted that Tony's mom said his plans haven't changed. There's still hope!!!
-
"Don't feel too good, time to make big boy decisions..." Damn, this sucks.
-
Because he said he's coming back. He was in basically every mock draft all year until he said he was coming back.
-
They're reporting that Tony Mitchell is almost certainly going pro now. It says Forrest getting the job could change his mind, but still unlikely. I'm going to cry myself to sleep now.

At what point does JJ stretch this too Far?

I understand that we're kinda stuck in limbo and it sucks, but can you really blame him? This is potentially the biggest decision of his life/coaching career. I mean, it's his dream job, and he'd be getting a sizeable raise. I can't really blame him for taking his time, considering the magnitude of the situation. Now, if he's contemplating SMU, different story, but I can't blame him for considering LSU. -
Don't feel too bad about this. He was still a couple years from seeing the field, if at all. The rivals system is not foolproof. Now losing Freddie Warner, THAT hurt. He was easily the best player in the secondary. We are wearing kind of thin in the secondary now. However we have 4 secondary guys coming in the fall, and I'd bet at least a couple of them get playing time. Jamal Marshall is the guy to keep an eye on. If I recall correctly, I believe he only played 2 years of high school. He's an SEC-caliber athlete(6-3, 190) who will rack up the medals at the state track meet. These are the kinda guys that UNT has the potential to hit home runs with. With some coaching, this guy has the potential to be playing on Sundays. There are currently 3 things that worry me; the secondary, the defensive line, and OL depth(our starters are great, but the drop-off to the backups is ridiculous).
-
Exactly. He's all over the place with his tweets. I wouldn't read too much into anything he says on there. And yeah, I think that's the main reason he decided to stay. I'm sure he's never really had trouble making friends, but I think he went to like 4 different high schools. He really likes his teammates, and I don't think he was ready to just up and leave again. I'm certainly thrilled he stayed.
-
I highly doubt this has anything to do with the coaching situation.

I love Johnny as much as the next guy, but there is not a chance in hell he gets 2 million dollars from anyone. I'd be shocked if he even got offered 1 million. I hope like hell he stays though. But I'm preparing myself for the worst.
