Benford Coaches Show Tonight at 7 from Rudy's
cl_1_2008 replied to GRN-WHT's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I wondered where our comedic relief had run off to. It all makes sense now. -
Any other position and I'd agree with you. Devante Davis played all year at 167.
-
That is kinda what I was thinking.
-
So Hilbert was good, Whitfield was good, and Trice was good, but our secondary was awful? Things aren't quite adding up.
-
That is a chance I'm willing to take.
-
If Mac leaves, I really, really, really hope we just promote Canales. I wish he had gotten the job to begin with.

Louisiana Tech passes on going to bowl?

I'd say they're treading dangerously close to that line. -

No worries man. We're all black friends. -
They turned down and Independence Bowl invite to play ULM.

While I am certainly not the biggest fan of Mr. Holmen, I am starting to think he needs more minutes. He's our best 3-point shooter(I know, scary), so other teams as least have to think about staying close to him on the perimeter. When he's not on the floor, the other team can double and triple Tony more easily, because they don't have to worry about leaving a shooter open. This isn't ideal, because I don't feel great about Holmen, but it is what it is. Until someone else starts making jumpers, he should be getting extra PT.
-
And here is where the problem lies. We have no shooters. MAYBE Holmen I guess, but nobody else on the team can consistently hit a jump shot. In my opinion, they need to put Tony out on the perimeter more, and let him initiate the offense. If you want to double him on the perimeter, go for it, because that takes people out of the paint, which just so happens to be the only place we can make shots. When he's down low, they can send 2 or 3 guys at him without worrying, because we are a godawful perimeter-shooting team. Every team we play from here on out is going to zone the hell out of us until we learn how to beat it. Hopefully, we figure it out before February. Go Mean Green...

If Mitchell didn't respect Benford, he'd be playing in the NBA right now.
-
Of course Tony didn't want to come out. But every coach in the country is going to take you out when you pick up 2 fouls in the first half, especially when you're already prone to committing dumb fouls.
-
You do realize he's playing a position right now that he'll NEVER play a minute of in the NBA right? He's not a center. Never has been, never will be. I don't know why our past 2 coaches insist on playing him there.

Mac Show Highlights and Skip Caldwell
cl_1_2008 replied to MeanGreenGlory's topic in Mean Green Football
Skip Caldwell is from Whitehouse, and I've heard very good things about him in practice. He will definitely be a contributor at WR next year along with Brelan, Darnell, Darius Terrell, and Carlos. Offensively, I'd like to see us pick up a JUCO guy to replace Fortenberry. I don't think any of the young linemen are ready to step in quite yet. Mac said we'd bring in a few JUCOs and I hope 2 of them are defensive linemen. -
Setting the record straight on Mac's recruiting

Really? Middle of the pack? I completely disagree with this. They were middle of the pack this year, but they are extremely young, and their best player got suspended. Their football program is already AT LEAST on par with Texas Tech, if they haven't surpassed them. Now that they're in the Big 12, they're only going to get better. -
If I see the phrase "bare cupboard" one more time, I'm gonna go crazy.

Give Leach credit and Iowa State QB thoughts
cl_1_2008 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Leach took the 25k he got for beating Washington in the Apple Cup and opened up a tab at a local bar for all the fans. -
If you think Dodge left the cupboard bare, just wait until his players are gone. Y'Barbo, Fortenberry, A. Johnson, Feeley, Anyiam, Byrd, Chancellor, Teegarden, Miller, Prior, McCoy, Abbe, Cantly, Obi, Bellazin, Orr, Phillips, Wright, Jackson...

Classy, too. Polk has played 5 games and has a grand total of 8 tackles, but you think he's an upgrade over a 3 year starter? Yeah, okay. You're taking this twitter feud a little too far.
-
You're not very bright if you think we won't miss him next year.
-
"It felt like everything I tossed up was going in." Dude, you missed 56 shots!! FIFTY-SIX!!!!
-
False.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (11/19/12)

Tomorrow. -
I know it has only been 5 games, but this is something that has improved thus far under Benford. So far, we have 79 assists to only 59 turnovers(1.34 to 1). Last year, we had 385 assists to 464 turnovers(.83 to 1). Tony has really cut down on his turnovers. Last year he was up around 3 per game, and so far he only has 6 through 5 games. If this is a trend and not just a flash in the pan, then it's a very good sign of things to come. Last year, only 13 teams finished with a ratio of 1.34 to 1 or better, and only 1 of those teams, Northwestern, didn't get to go dancing. Go Mean Green!
