  1. Stephan F. Austin Head Basketball Coach Brad Underwood has been offered the same position at Marshall University, according to ESPN. Marshall bought out the final two years of Tom Herrion's contract after a four-year run, reported ESPN. http://www.ketknbc.com/sports/report-marshall-university-offers-sfa-basketball-c
  2. I still miss that old stadium in the heart of the Tulane campus. I attended a Dallas Cowboys/New Orleans Saints game there in 1967, the Saints' first season in the NFL. With Al Hirt playing Dixieland Jazz on the sidelines and the Dixie Beer flowing freely, the joint was "rockin". One of my great sports memories - thanks for posting the pic.
  3. Why 'da hell do we have to "blame" anyone???? It is a damned game, and sometimes you intercept - and sometimes you get intercepted. Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose - hopefully more often the former than the latter. This crap of blaming players and coaches for not being perfect is just that - crap!!! Jeez!
  4. I have been teaching economics at a community college for 38 years (and have loved every minute of it). A student walks into my classroom and I perceive him/her as a student that wants to not only pass my class, but also is there to achieve academic success beyond my class, and succeed in life (whether that is the desire for a large income, accumulating wealth, earning prestige, being a contributor to society instead of being satisfied with "sitting on the bench" of life, etc.). I, like most (but not all) of the teachers I know, will bust-a-gut to help a student be successful in my class. BG's "motivation" and "creativity" type responsibilities that he is heaping upon coaches is likewise heaped upon me. Great. I get it. I agree. But to hold me totally responsible for the success of every single student that walks through my door (or in McCarney's case, every single player in the lockerroom) is not facing reality........I cannot "reach" every student; I cannot create "ability"; I cannot force realization of "potential" upon every student - I can motivate only those who have a willingness to be motivated - and even motivation by itself is not enough.........obviously motivation must be coupled with ability. There is a point where I have to just say "great potential is there; for whatever reason - and certainly not from a lack of trying on my part - this student needs to find a "Fry Street" (that is from yours and my days at NTSU, Silver) where he/she can try to find what they are looking for in life............and like so many, so many, of our professors that we had in those days, eventually find the purpose and drive that, ultimately, leads to success in their lives (I have visited with so many university professors over my life and a relatively common element among them was the need for "failure" and then the need for time to "find themselves". One of my colleagues put it very succinctly (and I think this carries over to coaches as well): "In teaching my students there is a point at which I am no longer willing to work any harder on the student's behalf than the student is willing to work to achieve his own success." I would certainly expect that coaches have this same philosophy - Can't light that fire under their butt after repeatedly trying to do so? Then it is time to move on to those who do have the drive to succeed. My problem with BG's statement was the ABSOLUTE message in the statement that he made. One thing we all learn and he will, too, is that there are very few absolutes.
  5. So I guess you would also say: "When a STUDENT doesn't reach his potential it is because of "TEACHING", or lack thereof. Thats' uhh.......a teacher's job." Do you really believe that "crapola"? As a teacher with 38 years of experience, let me suggest that what you have said is pure and simple crapola! It crapola to interject the notion that coaches are singularly responsible for a player reaching his or her potential...........I don't want to openly pick on a player by name, but there is a player on the Mean Green defense that coaches have repeatedly tried to light a "far" under his rather substantial butt and to no avail. When does the coach's/teacher's "job" end and the player's/student's "personal responsibility" for reaching their potential begin? GMG
  6. Creditability just went to hell in an handbasket!
  7. Tucker is a real "sleeper" - deserves watching. If it happens, that would make two running backs from little ole 3-A Chapel Hill - as well as a hit 'em in the mouth safety - and, well, the jury is still out on Sir Calvin.
  8. Man-oh-Man..........I gotta get me some of this kool aide this guy is drinking. Not disputing that such stardom is possible - I am just not as cock-sure. Speaking of which, maybe Mac and Chico need some of this guy's kool aide, too.
  9. Great job, Kram! The amount of time that you devote the the cause - UNT - is unbelievable. I hope that when i get to be your age I have as much energy and drive and love for UNT as you do. Whups, just remembered : I am older than you (barely) - but you are an inspiration in all matters UNT.
  10. I don't know about the Boca Raton Bowl. But I do know that "No Bowl" is what really sucks!
  11. Exactly!!! The fact that he felt the need to do so is certainly encouraging..........Unless it is just one's nature to see virtually everything in the negative!
  12. I have not seen Moorehead play since the state championship game in 2011. He signed with Northwestern State and was back home, sitting in the CH stands, in late September of 2012. Obviously something happened, and quickly, at Northwestern to cause him to leave. I understand from very UNreliable sources that he missed being at home - and by going to TJC he was able to accomplish both - the next level of football and be at home. If UNT now has an interest, perhaps Colton has "grown" up a bit and is ready to go away to a university to play some football. I marveled many times at how Sir Calvin was recruited by the Mean Green coaches and Colton was not - I have to be honest; after watching Sir Calvin for every high school game for two years, I would not have recruited him at a D1 university. Sir Calvin did not overly distinguish himself among the CH community - always seemed to have various ailments that would not have kept a driven player from being on the field - the term "Wussy" was thrown around a lot, even by some of the lower level coaches. How I wish and hope that Sir Calvin has progressed beyond that but........I was told by a very REliable source that McCarney tried to run Sir Calvin off, and Sir Calvin showed a little backbone by refusing to go quietly. Colton, on the other hand, had a big body that could accomodate growth in size and strength - Yes, he was a project but he had a helluva upside in my opinion. I never felt that way about Sir Calvin. But the big thing with Colton was that he had a "motor" - He was a great leader for the Chapel Hill squad and I always thought that he would have ultimately been a vocal, physical, and inspirational leader for the Mean Green. I hope he has grown emotionally and physically to the point that McCarney and the coaches see some potential......hell, here we are in 2014 and our DT situation ain't much different that it was back in 2011 when this whole thread began. GMG
  13. Given our 2014 recruiting class, you have to be just "funnin" with us - You can't be serious!!!
  14. Willy Ivery: As Terrell Owens once said: "Get your popcorn ready!"
  15. Well, thats' what I have been telling you folks in prior postings.........While there are other positions that are important and we have some very good commits to fill those positions, having seen this kid play several times I have always thought that he is the steal of this Mean Green recruiting season.
  16. I have seen this young man play a few times. Given his play in those games he is certainly deserving of being a 3-star. I think he will "wow" the followers of The Mean Green - He is the single recruit I am most excited about us landing.
  17. Between that and your "as I have said on many occasions" comments about the Green Brigade (who I think do a helluva job in technique, sound, and "showmanship"!!!), I think most of us have this SilverEagle song and verse down. It takes time to change culture and quality - I have been around our beloved university since July of 1970. If you are not seeing the tremendous strides that have been made in terms of "culture and quality change" over the past 15 or so years - both athletic AND academic - then you have not been looking at the same university I am seeing. If you have not seen EVEN GREATER strides having been made over the past six-to-eight years then you need to step up and take a closer look. YES - that does include tremendous changes in the so-called "culture" of our university. I Appreciate your continuing support and concern for the university - I have been reading your postings for a long time and I wish more people were equally concerned and provided significant support. But this university HAS changed. It is constantly evolving in a positive direction, and it is just as important that you/all of us acknowledge the positive nature of those changes as it is to continually suggest that such changes have not occurred. 18. Got mine today - Delivered here behind the Pine Curtain 'bout 2 PM! According to the packaging Fed Ex received them on Christmas Eve - and because of Christmas Day, the "overnight delivery" became 2nd day delivery. I am glad to have them in-hand - good seats, too.
  19. Was told by ticket office personnel last Wednesday that tickets were to be sent out last Friday - and that the ticket office would then be closed until December 26. As of right now, I have yet to receive my tickets.
  20. Great game for two of our Mean Green players - Sir Calvin (number 70) leading the stop on the CH one yard line with just a few seconds left in the game...........and Andrew Tucker then turning around and running about 90 yards for the winning TD with virtually no time left...........I think that run by Tucker was as excited as I have ever been at any football game, high school, college or pro. Sir Calvin has real potential and I think he finally "gets it" in terms of what is required to be a good college defensive tackle - In the games he played in this year I saw some emotion from him that I have never seen before; real excitement at what he was able to do when he got a chance to play. But as mentioned before in another thread, if one watches the highlights of this CH vs. LeVega game on the internet they can see the ability of Andrew Tucker as a running back (number 21) just in case UNT ever needs him to play RB at some point. Thanks, scrappyman, for bringing back the memory of that game - and the West Columbia playoff game of that 2011 State Championship season was equally as exciting with CH winning it with, I think, 8 seconds left in the game. A truly remarkable playoff run in 2011 by CH given they had four very, very close games out the five they played - and could easily have lost any of them. GMG
  21. Excellent running back - Relatively fast, hard-nosed runner. I watched him play every game his junior and senior years at Chapel Hill. Also, in response to someone else's comment - McCarney has been quoted as saying he thinks Rex Rollins will be available for spring ball. GMG
  22. Sir Calvin has been a real project for McCarney since he arrived at UNT. I was impressed by his play and enthusiasm on the first three plays he was on the field against Tulsa. This kid is a sleeper - The jury is still out - But he has come a long, long way physically since he arrived at UNT. More importantly, there has been a BIG change in attitude; an aggressiveness that was pretty much absent when he first arrived at UNT. His physicality and attitude now are big improvement from what I witnessed during Sir Calvin's Chapel Hill Bulldog days. GMG and go Sir Calvin.
  23. BULLFEATHERS!!!!!!
  24. I promise you - This kid has just MADE the 2014 recruiting class for the Mean Green!!! He is awesome. GMG
