  9. Report: North Texas forward Tony Mitchell to return to school Raphielle Johnson Apr 29, 2012, 11:23 PM EDT Leave a comment In the aftermath of Johnny Jones leaving to take over at LSU, North Texas freshman forward Tony Mitchell nearly left school to enter the 2012 NBA Draft. According to Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com, Mitchell will return to school for his sophomore season. New head coach Tony Benford will have one of the early favorites for Sun Belt Player of the Year back on campus, and the Mean Green are talented enough to reach the Big Dance in 2013. Benford, who was previously an assistant at Marquette, recruited Mitchell according to Goodman so it’s possible that the prior connection helped Mitchell come to this final decision. The 6-8 forward played in just 23 games last season but was a very tough matchup for opponents, averaging 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for North Texas. The Mean Green reached the title game of the Sun Belt tournament, where they fell to Western Kentucky. Mitchell’s return puts North Texas right there with Middle Tennessee for preseason favorite status, with the Blue Raiders having to replace forward LaRon Dendy. 10. MURFREESBORO — Conference USA has reportedly begun to make its selection of new members, and thus far MTSU has not appeared on the shopping list. Texas-San Antonio accepted an invitation in principle to CUSA on Saturday, as reported by CBSsports.com. Sun Belt Conference members Florida International and North Texas and Western Athletic Conference member Louisiana Tech are reportedly the likely three remaining suitors for CUSA’s expansion for 2013, and Charlotte could be a future fifth addition, if needed. If true, that would leave MTSU on the outside looking in for inclusion into CUSA, perceived as a better option than the Sun Belt, where the Blue Raiders have been since 2001. http://www.tennessean.com/article/D4/20120428/BLUERAIDERS01/304280053/Reports-MTSU-not-CUSA-immediate-plans?odyssey=mod%7Cnewswell%7Ctext%7CSports%7Cs

  12. http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketba...thern-miss Multiple sources on Tuesday told CBSSports.com that Davis was the leading candidate after interviewing in New Orleans on Monday, and another source said "the job was Kermit's if he wanted it" even if it was never officially offered. Ultimately, Davis simply decided to stay at MT, where nine of the top 10 players from a 27-win team will return. View the full article
  13. Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News has tweeted that San Diego State is talking to the MWC about a possible return due to concerns over the Big East. I can't believe that SDSU is waffling unless Boise State is also waffling. We know Petersen has said that the Big East isn't worth it if it puts the other sports in a bad situation. I have believed all along that the anticipated TV revenue for the new Big East would be under the leaked numbers they claimed to be expecting. If Boise and SDSU were to bailout of the Big East, you have to believe the Big East would start looking back in their own neighborhood with an eye toward ECU, USM, and Tulsa. I tend to think that if the spots are football only that USM and ECU get the nod and if the spots are all-sports that Tulsa would get one with USM and ECU battling for the other because Tulsa would help keep the public/private ratio in place. 16. A local UTSA football blogger/podcaster tweeted today that UTSA won't be invited to the CUSA/MWC (and UNT will be) (for what it is worth). Here's his twitter stream: https://twitter.com/#!/CokerChronicles If that's the case, will UTSA be in the Sun Belt in 2013? How about Texas State? Is the Sun Belt going to get to 12 football playing teams with a conference championship game? Who is in the conference in 2013? Would Sun Belters be happy with the addition of UTSA and Texas State? 20. First of all before you look twice this will be a 14/16 team model with a major upgrade to basketball and emphasizes rivalries. For Football. East. 1. Troy 2. South Alabama 3. FIU 4. FAU 5. Middle Tenn 6. WKU 7. ULM Everyone has their rivals in the division on this side except ULM who doesn't really have a rival. And everyone gets a guaranteed trip to Florida and Southern Alabama for recruiting exposure. 1. ULL 2. La Tech (I rolled my eyes also) 3. ASU 4. UNT 5. UTSA 6. TxSt 7. New Mexico State This side has a lot of Texas trips so down the road will be great for market heads and recruiting. It also is a regional western division all the states touch from one to the next. New Mexico will not bring better football but adds excellent basketball which is something we need to compliment Middle Tenn. Not to mention yet another pretty big city for a potential Tv deal. Now next is the full conference for basketball. View the full article
