  1. DENTON, Texas – Mean Green student-athletes recorded their ninth consecutive year with a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) above 82 or better with an 84 for the 2016-17 cohort, the NCAA announced Wednesday. Out of UNT’s 12 sport programs, 10 recorded impressive rates above 82. Seven programs improved or maintained their scores from the previous year including football, women’s basketball, soccer, softball, women’s tennis, women’s track and field/cross country along with swim and dive. Women’s basketball tied the program record with a 95. Additionally, football set a new program milestone with an 87. Women’s tennis maintained a perfect 100 for a record ninth year in a row. From the time GSR data collection began with the 1995-98 cohort, UNT has improved from a score of 59 to 84 (25-point increase). The GSR was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the academic success of Division I student-athletes by better accounting for the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. The NCAA also released the most recent federal graduation rate data in conjunction with the GSR information. The GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students, whereas the federal graduation rate does not. The GSR also accounts for mid-year enrollees. The NCAA calculates the federal graduation rate for student-athletes because it is the only rate by which to compare student-athletes to the general student body.

  6. DENTON – The UNT women’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Oklahoma in the 2024 season opener on Thursday in front of a record crowd of 1,216 fans. The Mean Green (0-1) conceded the difference-maker goal in the 29th minute when an errant pass on the North Texas defensive backline gave the Sooners’ Morganne Elkelbarner an uncontested shot at goal that she didn’t miss. OU (1-0) pressed and limited UNT’s Summer Brown and Bailey Wesco’s opportunities. The two forwards each played more than 50 minutes and had no shot attempts. “Credit to Oklahoma,” said head coach John Hedlund. “They have speed and quickness and they took advantage of our mistake. I thought we did regroup well after that and didn’t give up too many opportunities, but we just could not get our offense going.” UNT finished the match putting four shots on goal to OU’s three and had a free kick opportunity just outside the 18-yard box in the 83rd minute but could not convert. The 1,216-attendance mark set on Thursday is the largest ever at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium, which opened up in 2019. Thursday’s attendance blew away the previous record of 859 that was set during the grand opening of the facility. All-time 1,216 ranks third in the program’s history. Next up for North Texas is another home match as they host No. 20 Alabama on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+. 10. DENTON – The UNT men and women’s basketball teams are hosting the inaugural Nightmare on Elm Street Basketball Tip-off on Oct. 16 at the Denton Square. The season tip-off showcase will be part of the city of Denton’s increased Halloween initiative. The event, which will feature a basketball court setup on Elm Street between Hickory and Oak Street in the Denton Square, will give Mean Green fans the opportunity to meet this year’s teams and get a preview of what will be an exciting 2024-25 season of UNT basketball. “One of our highest priorities is always going to be engaging with the Denton community and continuing to grow relationships here in our backyard,” UNT Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley said. “We are excited to be able to bring both of our basketball programs to the square in downtown Denton and partner with the city for this truly unique event this fall that we believe will bring UNT basketball to even more potential fans.” The event is free and open to the public. More information including start time is still to come. TWU’s NCAA Division II national runner-up basketball team as well as Denton ISD will also participate in the event. The Mean Green women’s basketball team is entering its second season under head coach Jason Burton. In its first season, UNT had its most successful season ever as they won a program record 23 games and a share of the American Athletic Conference regular season championship. The UNT men’s basketball team is entering the second season under head coach Ross Hodge who last year led the Mean Green to a 19-win season, which included victories over LSU, Memphis and SMU. The Mean Green reached the second round of 2024 NIT and are only one of seven teams in the country who have won a NCAA national postseason tournament game in each of the last four years. 11. • The proposal may slow but will not completely end booster-led NIL collectives, which MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says is the wish of “most” athletic directors. “They’d like to see collectives go away,” he said from Phoenix. But at many schools, collectives will remain as a third-party entity that (1) does not have to abide by Title IX and (2) can offer athletes extra compensation onto their school pay, most believe. “In my view, (collectives) will likely still exist regardless of how institutions are compensating student-athletes or not,” said Florida deputy AD Lynda Tealer, an expert on NIL matters who’s helped lead the NCAA NIL working group now for years.
  12. At its heart, Project DI is about deregulation. It cedes control of impactful decisions, such as athlete compensation, scholarship limits and roster spots, to the high-revenue producing schools. The proposal comes in two parts. (1) It permits DI schools to strike NIL deals directly with their athletes and offers athletes uncapped “educationally related enhancements.” That part of the proposal is on a sort-of fast track. The DI Council is expected to build a framework around the concept with recommendations due to the Board of Directors in April with potential adoption in August. (2) It creates a new subdivision of FBS, meant for the highest revenue-producing athletic departments, where these schools control rule and policy-making. There is an entry fee: Schools in the new subdivision would be required to distribute at least $30,000 per athlete for half of a school’s athletes while abiding by Title IX. Depending on the size of a school’s athletic department, that figure ranges from $5 million to $15 million annually. Gripes over the proposal range widely, according to conversations that several administrators held with Yahoo Sports over the last month, at the national championship site in Houston and NCAA convention in Phoenix. In a way, the NCAA’s own proposal strips away more of its own authority, which, ironically, opens up the organization to questions of its own existence from those in the major conferences: Can’t we enforce our own rules and operate our own championships? read more: https://sports.yahoo.com/with-college-sports-at-a-critical-juncture-is-project-di-the-answer-everything-is-on-the-table-161809460.html
  13. CHARLOTTE – The UNT men’s basketball team heads into Charlotte Saturday riding a league-leading six-game winning streak and aiming for its first 5-0 start to conference in 35 years. The Mean Green (11-5, 4-0) and 49ers (10-7, 4-1) are scheduled to tip-off Saturday at 3 p.m. CT from Halton Arena in Charlotte. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield. On Wednesday North Texas defeated East Carolina on the road, 60-59, in one of the most dramatic victories in program history. With 3.1 seconds remaining trailing by one, Aaron Scott chucked a full-court inbound pass nearly 90 feet to Robert Allen who caught it and laid in the game-winning basket. The victory increased UNT’s winning streak to six in a row and kept them undefeated in the American Athletic Conference standings at 4-0. It is the first time UNT has started conference 4-0 since the 2018-19 season. A win Saturday at Charlotte would mark the program’s first 5-0 start to a conference slate since 1989 when the Mean Green opened the Southland Conference 5-0. That year, UNT won the Southland Conference regular season title with 10-4 league record. North Texas has never started a conference 6-0. Charlotte, though, has been a tough road game for North Texas. The Mean Green have lost their last two trips to Halton Arena. Last year, UNT fell 55-49 to the 49ers on the road. The loss snapped a then eight-game winning streak for the Mean Green. There were nine ties and six lead changes in the game last year, but Charlotte ended the contest making five of their final seven shots to capture the victory. The 49ers held UNT’s leading scorer Tylor Perry to a season-low eight points as he was 3-of-11 from the floor. Road games at Charlotte haven’t only been difficult for North Texas. The 49ers are 7-1 this year at home and defeated then No. 17 ranked Florida Atlantic at home 70-68 on Jan. 6. Charlotte is 29-9 (.763) at Halton Arena over the last three years. For more information on UNT men's basketball tickets, contact the Mean Green Ticket Office at 940-565-2527 or at ticketoffice@unt.edu. 14. GREENVILLE, North Carolina – Robert Allen made a game-winning layup with 1.4 seconds remaining off a 80+ foot full-court inbound pass from Aaron Scott to seal the 60-59 victory over the East Carolina Pirates Wednesday night at the Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The win is North Texas’ sixth straight and improves them to 4-0 in conference. The Mean Green are now 21-5 in road games since 2021. “A perfect pass from Aaron (Scott) and a veteran composure catch and basket by Robert (Allen),” said head coach Ross Hodge. “Give coach (Michael) Schwartz and ECU a ton of credit. They did a great job at making things difficult for us today. But super proud of this group sticking together.” With 5:11 left in the game, ECU’s RJ Felton sank a deep second-chance 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock to give his Pirates the lead. ECU (9-9, 2-3) increased the lead to four with two minutes remaining. Scott gave his Mean Green (11-5, 4-0) a shot of life with 1:48 remaining as he hit a corner 3-pointer to bring his team within one. With 17 seconds left junior Rondel Walker came up clutch for UNT as he put in a third-chance layup in to give the Mean Green a one-point lead. Felton gave the Pirates a one-point lead with 3.1 seconds after he drove right and pulled up with a desperation midrange shot towards the end of the shot clock. With the East Carolina crowd ready to erupt in victorious pandemonium and UNT with no timeouts, Scott stepped behind the baseline and delivered a perfect pass to Allen in the opposite paint 80+ feet away for the win. “It’s a play we work on a lot,” Scott said postgame. “We knew exactly what to do.” The game-winning basket was just Allen’s second made field goal of the game as he finished with four points and 11 rebounds. Scott had 12 points, 5 rebounds and two assists. Jason Edwards led all scorers with 20 points. CJ Noland was also in double figures as he finished with 11 points and five rebounds. UNT stays on the road as they travel to Charlotte to face the 49ers on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and Mean Green Sports Network. For more information on UNT men's basketball tickets, contact the Mean Green Ticket Office at 940-565-2527 or at ticketoffice@unt.edu.
