'17 WR Kyre Richardson (OK Union) [Verbal; SDSU]
Army of Dad replied to B225's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Solid first post! -
Yeah, though I recall that "shouting" wasn't that uncommon when I joined the board. I do think it's not as bad as this time last year. Shoot, most places on the 'net have at least some of that.

Recruiting Folderol & Whatnot
Army of Dad replied to MeanGreenMailbox aka TFLF's topic in Mean Green Football
And mediocre recruiting compared to his conference mates leads to fairly average conference records. He beats up on teams below him in the college football pecking order to get those winning records. He does refute the "no one builds a coaching career on lower rates recruits" in that he has done ok for himself, but let's not act like he's winning those games with nothing but 2 star guys. In extending this point to North Texas, we don't get the luxury of beating up on as many teams as far down the pecking order every season. We need to compete for conference titles and that will be very difficult with a 9-10 ranked class every year. I think we can rule out you shooting yourself. -

It's not like he's setting he world on fire. I tend to think his mouth is more responsible for his fame than his results. I used Wiki for the W/L records(so data errors are a possibility) At Tech his non con winning percentage was .787 while he was just .588 in conference. At Wazzou it's a .500 to .444 split. He didn't do well overall compared to his conference peers at either P5 head coaching stop, and did better against the teams not on his own level. (Feasting on OOC wins while at Tech) -
Of what, a player that couldn't beat out other very highly rated recruits? Why most programs take a HS QB every class while knowing that oftentimes around half of them won't become starters?

NTD: It’s time for North Texas to fire Tony Benford
Army of Dad replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Maybe not everyone -
Op-ed in the Daily agrees it's time to let Benford go: http://ntdaily.com/its-time-for-north-texas-to-fire-tony-benford/ .211 road winning percentage and .364 conference win percentage in five years.

If we end up with any potential applicants that are worried they might get fired halfway through their fifth season after losing 20 games twice in their first four seasons then we don't want those guys. -
Look and laugh: $5,000 bonus if UNT wins 20 games $10,000 if the Mean Green wins 25 games. $10,000 bonus in his contract if he is named Coach of the Year $10,000 bonus written into the deal if UNT wins a regular-season conference title and a $25,000 bonus if UNT wins a postseason conference tournament $10,000 bonus if UNT sells 3,000 season tickets and $10,000 for each additional 1,000 tickets.

We haven't really seen either a master plan, if he sets measurable goals and holds people to them, or a turnover/dismissal of underperformers yet. I'll agree that 'yet' might be the key word, but so far we don't have much tangible evidence of positive change. I think most of us can agree he got handed the keys to a shhh show, and while Rome wasn't built in a day it wasn't built solely by talking about what the city should look like.

Krystal is close to White Castle and I'd say you don't have to be stoned to eat it, being drunk works well.

I think it's a fair question. The only real change made after WB's hire is to insulate himself with new upper level positions and a new ticketing manager (who, IMO, hasn't covered herself in glory. While she seems to be better than what we had that could just be damning by faint praise). I get that some things take time, but there really hasn't been much tangible evidence available to the entire fan base that WB is achieving positive change so far. Not hope (which I understand many of you have for the first time in a long time), but actual evidence. I also think you are really overthinking how much a potential recruit is reading the board and overvaluing how it might shape their opinion of playing here.

I know what he said. I know he left Benford at the helm after coming on board. I know if WB is half as good as we hope him to be he should be long past recognizing the failure stalking the sideline in the Super Pit. I know that I'm just about completely out of patience. At this point they are killing off my passion for UNT sports in general and more specifically, MBB. Everyone has their own personal 'Popeye moment' and I'm just about there for mine. You are correct that if Benford was brought back for next year I'd be done completely. If WB waits I don't know that there will be any fire left for a new coach to possibly rekindle. I'm not setting a deadline or saying "I'll never"(unless WB makes a monumental screw up and gives Benford another year), but I am saying it doesn't look good if he lets this draw out much longer. I've had (just about) all I can stands and I can't stands no more.

Nick Gerber QB '17 (Levelland) [Verbal: TJC]
Army of Dad replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I think that the fact they danced around the offer in conjunction with other sources and the fact we already have one scholarship QB for this class is tacit confirmation of PWO. -
What would have made any sensible observer of years 1-4 think he'd be brought back for a 5th? You really think they haven't checked out on him already? I'd say that at lest 1/4-1/3 of the team has tuned him out completely already. What's worse is I think Benford knows that. Even worse than that is the possibility that WB hasn't figured it out yet.
-
For newer members of the GMG community this is an extreme departure from where TTG had been historically in regards to UNT sports. Almost akin to Kram telling UNT to get bent (almost, because I don't think he'd ever do it). Oh and @EagleMBA, I'm drinking a Shiner now.
-
Did you try searching for 'Pahinui'? (I didn't search and I had to double check the spelling from the MGS link)
-
Solid advice, though I'm sure @ArmyOfMom would be the first to tell you that I'm not well suited to that. A major factor to renewing this year was as a vote of confidence in WB. If he fails to publicly act before the season is over I don't know that I'll be back next season. Too much damage done already and then no public attempt to prove he's not more of the same. I know some of you think that's a crappy position, but damn few have sat through almost every home game of Benford's tenure as I have. It's painfully obvious Benford doesn't have 'it' and never will. Pull the damn plug already.
-
I'm not sure I can take much more. We've kept our season tickets all this time, but I have to say the longer this plays out the lower the chances I want to renew next year. The fatigue from all the incompetence and losing is getting to me and I don't know how much excitement could even be generated from a new AD and MBB coach to overcome that...

So that would leave us with basketball, traditions, and comparing athletic directors to talk about. ? -

That's what I thought @AustinFromUNT was driving at, that the stats might not translate well to FBS. I don't think he said anything about his film in that post...
