Can UNT win one conference game with Benford as coach?
Army of Dad replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Basketball
That's not entirely true. You might have to get permission, but you can talk to coaches while they are under contract. A search firm may not have the same constraint. -
Can UNT win one conference game with Benford as coach?
Army of Dad replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Just have to wait until he gets his guys in here. -
If/when I stop going to games that is likely to be a permanent condition. I'll love something with real passion, but if that is killed off then it's dead. It should be fairly obvious that it takes a good bit to kill that passion (FFS we've kept our season tickets all this time!), but that point is being reached. I see all of this as more of the same old UNT syndrome. Keeping Benford and allowing him to (likely) lose 20 games for a third time is going to be the final straw. I fail to see how this time it's really going to be different. Finally firing RV gave me a glimmer of hope. That little bit of hope is fading fast. Perhaps you missed where I said we are the local fans that we hear so much about needing. We have only slight ties to the school. UNT is still sending the message that there's little reason to care about athletics or attend the events. That attitude will never build the passion needed in large segments of the local and alumni groups. I don't see how that scenario is likely to happen. Baker made a mistake in retaining Benford. IMO, he doesn't have time to play wait and see with all of the things wrong in his department. It takes a hell of a lot to make me quit.

I've never fired one, but I think it's safe to say that rifle isn't recoilless! ? -
Thanks, and no apologies necessary, IMO. Prior to each season of Benford's reign of ?There has been the usual suspects parading that this year will be the year. It was the same with other facets of athletics here for all the years I've been a fan. You did it again before this season despite a large amount of evidence indicating otherwise. That's accepting failure. Advocating on behalf of Benford is promoting failure, not accepting it. I'm glad that you've finally recognized that Benford is a failure. I just can't fathom why it would take anyone 4.5 seasons to see it. Leaving Benford in charge for the rest of his contract is continuing to accept failure.

Anyone else concerned by the amount of Blueshirts?
Army of Dad replied to GMG24's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
So which 12 were talented enough for that staff to award them scholarships? How about two from ST, Moore and Keena. That leaves you only 10 more guys tops since you said "may". So who are your 10? -
There is more important business for the AD to attend to, at least in my opinion.
-
I never stopped going to the home games. If UNT does as some of you suggest and continues to accept abject failure then it doesn't care as much as I do. I'll stop going to games then, and it's almost a certainty that I will not return.

MGB breaking news -- Jeremy Combs is done for year
Army of Dad replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I know you're not referring to me. ? -
Has 90 been over the top? Certainly, but let's not act like he's the only one and back during the great class wars of 15-16 he was being attacked by multiple people for his views and being called into threads and then vilified for derailing threads he barely participated in. I do not recall you condemning those posters then... You're among a relatively small group of people that seem to support the AD without much, if any, exception. I think that particular group of fans has it wrong a good bit of the time, but I still respect y'alls tenacity.

This is why you were looking to sell the bus, right? -
I think we've gotten mixed up a bit. I don't see how 90 is what makes it no longer fun to be a fan. The losing and Shhh show we've had is what makes it no longer fun. I'm surprised that it's a post (ok, probably more than one) that makes it no fun. Don't take that as a personal shot, it wasn't intended as such. I call things as I see them. If I'm seeing lots of negatives surrounding North Texas it's because there are lots of negatives. Continuance of the pattern of accepting failure is a major red flag, if UNT doesn't care to do more than dump on the few fans they have then I'm not staying and asking for another mouthful of ?. Benford should have been canned years ago. Every day that goes by is one more day of accepting failure and telling the fanbase and general public we just don't care and neither should you.

Need to see that rewritten to say Benford is done for the year... I hate to see this for Jeremy, but I hope he can finally get healthy. -

Abbreviation for a company that developed what would become the M16 rifle. The company's name is Armalite and various configurations of their products are referred to as ARs (AR-15, AR-10, etc...) Most aficionados simply refer to them as ARs. -
I'm just not seeing where you equating suffering through the amazingly large amount of bad coaches is fun. I get not liking the tone 90 had, I'm just surprised that is what makes it not fun to be a fan. I'm a bit disappointed that you think this is throwing a fit. Outside of a few in person conversations, I don't believe I've ever said that I was going to be done with UNT sports if "X" did or did not happen. The firing of RV and hiring of WB kept my fandom on life support. I didn't arrive at this point on a whim. I've never posted "I'm done if" before, but I'm coming to the realization that UNT just doesn't care about their sports like I do. This unfathomable continued support of Benford is just the final straw. You seem to have no bottom to your own personal well. I'd say that's probably a bad thing (certainly for UNT sports). You'll probably disagree, but I'm not saying you are acting like a sycophant, a zombie, or otherwise characterizing your behavior in a negative light.

Suffering = fun?
-
That's the reason?! It's not all the losing and repeated refusal to address issues? It's not the repeated poor product put out by the AD (MBB game sheet with last year's roster, continued ticketing problems for just a couple quick examples). About the only thing that's well above average for the conference is our broadcast team(s). Agree.
-
@UNTFan23 I tend to think the team will play better without Benford just from the change in atmosphere/pressure. As for bending to will, I'd say its more of a indication of a problem that the AD (department or person) feels that keeping Benford around is the correct course of action.

If WB didn't have any idea of what he had here before we hired him then we got the wrong guy. It's not like Benford's abject failure (and Mac's, and Dodge's and Stephens' and Peterson's) are secrets. Additionally, like it or not WB has to understand that his 6 months experience isn't the case for his customers. I don't believe I specified any person saying that. It's a pervasive sentiment in segments of the school and fan base. Understand, but for some that would be both an unforgettable and unforgivable mistake.

I like @Harry a lot, but I'm sure I don't know him as well as some of you. He strikes me as the classic die hard, nothing will ever be too much to take. Every team has those guys and every team needs them. Here they represent too large of a percentage of total fans. In my view, this is something that's been present for the entire time I've lived in the area. Wren is simply continuing this trend and by his actions (specifically, his lack of public action) he is communicating he is ok with the status quo to the current and potential fans. There are some well founded reasons why this athletic department has never come near its potential. I'm starting to see that one of them is because there isn't enough real passion to make it that way. Far too much 'go along to get along' and self deprecating 'we/he/she can't be expected to do any better than X'. I used to think this place would finally begin to turn around, I developed a passion for UNT from attending games. Some of you know our family has only light connections to the school. We are those local fans people are often asking about. It's looking more and more like North Texas doesn't care as much as I do about it's programs. That UNT doesn't really care about its athletics is a real perception out there and this only continues to feed that perception. I'd ask all of you counseling for even more patience to consider that perception before you ever again wonder why locals or alumni don't attend UNT games in droves. This 'typical little ole UNT' behavior is only going to further strengthen that perception among locals and alumni alike.

Leaving Benford in place for five full seasons would seem to indicate this is a hole in the ground.

This is quite often the case for them.

MGB: Firing Benford midseason would be a bad move for UNT
Army of Dad replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I would also be disappointed. That they started doing it with a coach under contract. Prospective coaches won't care Beenfired was canned during his fifth year after two (that's right, TWO) 20 loss seasons. They might be put off by conducting a search before the current coach is officially let go. -

1) That's yet another in a horrid possible excuses to keep him here even one minute longer. 2) The future is now for at least some of the few fans this program has left. Inaction by Wren means the damage continues. 3) I thought a similar thing last year and yet failute still waddles around on the sideline. 4) If Wren can't see the damage being done I have no faith he will get a new hire right at all. He will have all the time he needs and can actually start having a search firm working on it once he fires Benford. Acting now (or very soon) will only increase the time available to make a hiring decision and get us toward the head of the line for coaching musical chairs.
