Atheists Choose
hickoryhouse replied to hickoryhouse's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
In the catholic faith the baptism has less to do with accepting the religion and more to do with cleansing the person of "original sin". Due to that the catholics will baptise the children at a very young age to ensure that the child is without sin if it were to pass on at an early age. It is a bit odd, but that is the faith and it has nothing to do with the individual's choice of a religion. -

Who Is Better

Some of them have, for example Mike Huckabee with his Fox News show. I will also have a bit more respect for Franken if he ever gets back into the entertainment businessthanks to his current political post. I do think that it is all about money though, these guys are good at making peple listen pay attention to them and apparently the talk show route pays significantly more Essentially all being a politician is is getting more votes, aka popularity contest. I think that if Rush or Hannity or whoever else were to try and run for the senate in their home state, they would have a pretty good chance of winning. They are good entertainers and that generally make good communicators ala Reagan, Arnold, Jesse Ventura etc. I don't think they would suck as elected types, I also doubt that they have the stones to do what they say on their shows either, except for Franken because he aligns pretty closely with Nancy Pelosi... My point is that just because they choose not to do something doesn't mean that they don't at least have a modicum of credibility when talking about that very subject. -

I as well was confirmed at 13, maybe 14. I cared about it deeply at the time and then later I took different path and explored all that interested me in the world of religion. Wether confirmed or baptised, I don't find anything wrong with doing it as a young teen. As we have seen many people will decide that the Christian way is not the way for them, and more power to them. -
Your 2nd Place Rangers
hickoryhouse replied to NT03's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Perhaps the rangers can torch this Bucholz kid. He had one goosd start last week but his career ERA is around 5. he is on 24 and I think that the Rangers, assuming that a couple guys remember how to hit, could make it a good night. Depleted pen and all. Maybe this will turn into the highest scoring game in the history of Baseball -

They could be shock jocks, they could be editorialists, they could be whatever it is that you want to belive. They are entertainers the same way that Bill Mahr, Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Bill Press and Al Franken (before he ran for office to make more money) The only difference is the conservative guys generally have significantly higher ratings, so they make more money and don't have to run for office, again see Al Franken. -

Not that I care about them, but I will give it a shot... These guys are entertainers not politicians. As such they make more money entertaining than they would as politicians. Therefore, they choose the route of making more money, this is a capitalistic society. -

Interesting trivia indeed wow O'day - 1.99 Hunter - 2.17 Wilson - 2.93 Jennings - 3.26 Beckett - 3.42 Wow, Beckett has the higest of the bunch.... That truly is amazing. We will see if Hunter can keep it up. Our bullpen has been pretty solid all year and it is god to see Wilson closing games well again. He just looks much more confidant on the mound now. -

Getting shut down by the great ess that is Tommy hunter is kinda harsh, but that's ok because Beckett was kicking ass too. I am just happy to see some timely hitting from the rangers at this point -
Thanks to my brother who is a Company Commander in Iraq right now controlling a Company who is actually seeing combat I get some interesting perspectives from the guy. We are leaving and there is a departure date, though it is not set in stone yet. The Iraqis are doing most of their own work at the moment and are very anxious to be defending their own country. There is pride in the Iraqi Military but there are also those who sympathize with the insurgents as well causing problems internally for the Iraqi Military. Essentially we are trying to leave as quickly as we can, but we are not going to do it until we feel confident that they can take care of themselves. I am of the opinion that the insurgents are and have been holding back because they know that at some point we are heading out and then they can come back. But if we do out jobs correctly then the new Iraqi democracy will have a good shot at defending itself.

That is exactly right, there are just certain places tat CHili's doesn't need to be, Fry St and the Square are part of what makes Denton special and if we sully that with corporate stuff that can be found anywhere then we are, IMO, losing what makes Denton awesome. There are plenty of places in town that have embraced and will embrace corporate and well know national establishments. They will do just fine. I just don't want to grab a hamburger from Chili's when I am on Fry.

Walter Cronkite Is Dead
hickoryhouse replied to UNTflyer's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I didn't watch the entire thing, but that did not sound like a very large group there watching him... I never would have known that about him had you not brought this to light, however it doesn't really change my respect for him as a news man. Everyone is entitled to their opinions of utopia, and everyone thinks that their idealistic version of the world is the correct one. Perhaps the World Federalist thing is a bit awkward though... We will eventually get there, perhaps it wil take hundreds of years and several wars... but It is that way in Star Trek so it has to be true. -
I still like the food at RipRocks, but it isn't as ggod as the state Club or the old Pickup. I miss bagheri's very much... That is the small italian place that was torn down... The square has a bunch of good places like Sweetwater, but talking about a nice beer and burger joint near campus I have to go with RipRocks...

hickoryhouse replied to NT03's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Perhaps I am missing something but I was always under the impression that a god lead off guy made contact, worked pitchers so that the rest of the line up could get a view of their stuff, and got on base. I thought he was supposed to have more runs thatn RBI's.. If this is the case then why don't we hit Mike Young at the lead of spot? and Move Kins to a more power friendly location in the lineup? -
Hell's Gate...pk
hickoryhouse replied to FirefightnRick's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I love hell's gate, I have spent many a great weekend over there. In fact during a particularly brave weekend many moons ago we did some jumping off the cliffs into the water some 80 ft below. Probably one of the dumbest things I have ever done, and I am sure it is illegal and rightfully so, but it was a great time and a good memory just the same. There is some great hiking around PK, very falt but very pretty. Also some amazing golf at the Cliffs... -

No tears for Tom Watson, He had a spectacular weekend, even though he did not take it home he played amazingly well and deserved much props, especially for a 59 year old guy with a fake hip And Cink deserves some credit as well. -
Legalize Marijuana ?
hickoryhouse replied to NT03's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Most Marijuana arrests are for people with small amounts of the substance and incur an overnight jail stay, hardly what I would concider "jail time". If the offender has more than a certain amount it is deemed with "intent to distribute", that does incur more jail time. It isn't that there are a bunch of guys named Dude rotting in jail after getting caught with a joint.
