Gotta Love Tiger
hickoryhouse replied to DeepGreen's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
That is exactly what we want, a major sports figure spouting political opinions.... Most normal Americans have no idea why they believe what they believe, what makes us think that the biggest name in sports is more informed than we are? Who the hell cares what a famous person thinks anyway? They are just as ill informed and opinionated as the rest of us they just happen to have a bigger microphone...... -
Why does someone have to praise, or agree with the current administration to be a patriot? During the Bush years there were plenty of people protesting and disagreeing with administration policy in the wars and elsewhere and they were saying that they were more patriotic because they protested. All in all, a patriot doesn't have to fall into a political category and doesn't have to blindly follow the nations leader. Isn't a patriot is someone with an extraordinary love of country and is willing to fight for his country, or someone that takes the promise of his country and realizes it in his own life / industry? Within means dictated by law of course. It matters not what his beliefs are but more where is heart is in relation to country. Above all, these pundits are capitalists that have found a cord to pull that brings them money. Olbermann, Maddow, Beck, Hannity etc. all of them are capitalists and I applaud them for that. That is the American dream, find a niche and fill it, work hard, make money. Noting more patriotic than that.

Iot the same form response, which I don't think is a bad thing. What I think it means is that they have been getting a good amount of these comlaints so to save time they formulated a response to give to that particular question. If they only got that question 3-4 times, they wouldn't have a form email response. I am going to give them a chance but if I see a UT flag inside, there is no way they are getting my beer business when in town.

I think that the only reason anyone listens to these people is because it makes figuring out what is going on n the country, based on that person's opinion, so much easier than paying attention and looking for yourself. However, if you are paying attention you are listening to someone, somewhere, who has an agenda and a political point of view. If our government would make it easier for us common folks to understand what it is that is going on and perhaps write things in a way that doesn't include random lawyer speak, other confusing rhetoric, 1000 page documents etc then perhaps it will be easier for the unclean masses to figure out what the hell is going on. That essentially boils down to our ability to trust the government and I would be wiling to bet that the majority of this country doesn't trust the government and based on what we all have seen in our life times, we shouldn't. That is the main problem IMO we all sit here and complain about political pundits, people forming opinions based on editorials and their views, MSNBC, FOX News and their inherent biases and we sit here the entire time thinking that my biased information is better than your biased information... You are wrong and I am right.... Huntington post vs world net...etc. it is sad really. The problem has become that paying attention and being informed in today's climate is practically a full time job in its own right. Hell we have members of Congress who don't even have time to read bills or show up to vote. If the elected, who's full time job is paying attention, can't do it then how the hell can we? This large amount of confusion and the built up distrust of our elected officials make these pundits thrive because I think that there really is a desire in this country to know what is going on, but most of us don't have time to really dig in and figure it out for ourselves. We can figure it out on the surface for the most part, some of us like the public option and some of us don't. IF we trusted our government that would be the end of it, we would spend time discussing the values of each. But we don't trust our elected types, so we look for the evil inherent in the opposition to our opinion. Some think the repubs are in bed with the insurance companies and find any info to back that up and on the other hand some think that the dems are using the public option as a back door into socialized medicine and will find any means to back that up... No Trust, all of it based on an opinion that I feel could be a very civil conversation in the arena of ideas, with trust. I feel that we need politicians in office that we can trust, that back up their opinions and promises with action and that make legislation that the public can read. If that were to happen Beck and Olbermann would not be needed. I look forward to that but i don't believe that will ever happen, too many people with so many opinions and the spoils of power are looming over the heads of our elected officials in high office. I digress.... In short Beck is no worse than Olbermann, no worse than Maddow or Dick Hunter on the local Dallas scene. All of them exist because their is that basic distrust of the government.

Just for the sake of it I suppose, but the right doesn't own exclusive rights to comparing folks to nazi's. Perhaps a quick google search of "Bush AND Nazi" will render something..... Honestly all of the comparisons are based on loosely associated similarities that have little to no baring on the actual situation, but I seem to remember the left playing it fast and loose with that term too... Just saying

I didn't know that was an option... wow is right. That judge in Scotland has shown significantly more mercy for that guy than I would. -
H O V Cheaters Beware
hickoryhouse replied to UNTflyer's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I have to agree here. They were made to help relieve congestion for those of us who choose to carpool. If you don't want to carpool, or don't want to take the time to organize one, or perhaps smell bad and no one wants to ride with you then you don't get the benefit. Perhaps they could be managed better, but all in all I have no major issue with the HOV lane -
Pudge Back With Rangers
hickoryhouse replied to EagleD's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Very excited he is back, it isn't going to be long until he takes over as the starting catcher. Taylor is a good player but Pudge is a hall o' famer and is hitting at a much better clip than Taylor. I haven't seen him play much recently but if his arm is even 75% of what it used to be then we are in a good way defensively too I think. My only question, and it is perhaps Good old Days Syndrome or naivete, but what are the odds of him finishing up here with the Rangers? That would be something special if he could finish his career where he started. -
Congratulations! We gotta start em' young around here!

Want To Indirectly Help The Program Raise Money?
hickoryhouse replied to Quoner's topic in Mean Green Football
Sorry Illuvius, but as long as Bruce hall is on campus it will always be the University of Smoking Green.... And I am ok with that. it adds character. Therefor those atletes staying there, I never heard of one who did, we should donate extra rice crispy treats and ramman -
George Dunham Talking About Football Rankings
hickoryhouse replied to Green59's topic in Mean Green Football
Neh... never is along time, perhaps he can come back and be interested when we start winning again. I know we would love more GD's but they just aren't out there really. Craig can be an asset for us and our program when wining happens so lets not ostracize him just yet. But yeah I would like to see more support from him, and a million dollars. -
Perhaps this will be the only one... one can dream.

Should The Gomeangreen Non Unt Sports Forum Be Reopened?
hickoryhouse replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Gotta agree, if there is a fee it should be open for political discussions, if not then I am on the side of a separate political forum. I also doubt that I will be visiting many things other than the football forum during the season especially if we are competitive. I think that as we get closer and even into the season the entire place will calm itself. Besides, you only have to read or post if you want.. no one is forcing anyone to pay attention to the swill that goes on in there. Sometimes informative, sometimes drunken rambling but mostly entertaining. -
That stadium has been making us look substandard for years, why else would they film a movie about a crap Texas college football team there.... But we have addressed that recently and unless something major and off the radar happens we will no longer be burdened by Fouts. This team needs more support, we all realize that. There are things that need to happen and first and foremost is winning! Once that bridge has been crossed people will come. After that local businesses can step up more effectively, advertising can be more effective, word of mouth will carry more weight and on and on and on. It all starts with winning. Texas is the motherland to football, well that and ohio and florida I suppose but I digress, we should be able to pull support in this climate but no one supports a loser just look at SMU and their attendance numbers. People didn't come to the kickoff when DD was winning championships because the admin was different, there was less advertising and most importantly we never developed the culture of school spirit that other schools seem to. We will get a boost when we win, and with that boost period we need to capitalize and generate the school spirit that is lacking at UNT and has been for years. There are us, the few, the rediculous, the fans... and then there are the masses upon masses of UNT alums who don't give a s**t. We have a huge uphill road to climb with them, but we can start with the current and future student.... Steps to improve this? 1. put a winning product on the field 2. encourage student participation vigorously, we have been for a while but lets step it up more. Some how we have to break the culture of apathy and make it "cool" for students to go to games and support their school. After we do these things, we can focus on the old alums, but as we all have been witness, the school culture here vs. BCS "big school" there is different. Change the culture on campus, which has been happening, and we change the dark cloud of apathy that we as a Mean Green Nation feel. We, the supporters, have the power to talk about our college, which we do, promote our university, which we do, and explain our support to those that don't understand it. We need more of us!

Them Crooked Vultures
hickoryhouse replied to Boomer23's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I am going to say yes, and yes they do have good music. I don't think that I would pay the assuredly outlandish prices to see this band but the line up is intriguing. What can these three from different generations even, come up with!? I hate Nirvana with a passion, fun to listen to but they are quite possibly the most overrated band in the history of music, however Dave is an amazing talent and everything he touches seems to turn into gold! That being said, I am looking forward to the album or concert recordings being released.
