Memorial Day
hickoryhouse replied to Side Show Joe's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
By the way.... in the tradition of Memorial Day, and more important than the Obama "disrespect" or whatever... I went and played some golf today and shot a personal best 92 on a pretty hard course! btw... I do suck at golf, but I appear to be getting better thanks to a new (new to me) set of Taylor Made RAC irons and wedges! -
Memorial Day
hickoryhouse replied to Side Show Joe's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Big ditto here Kram... I just got word that my brother and his entire Ranger company is loading up their gear in the desert and should be home in less than two weeks! Great day for great news if you ask me! -
These are some very lucky kids... Having the chance to learn from WWII vets is a learning opportunity that shrinks by almost 1000 people a day. The kids at this school hopefully now have a better understanding of how important Memorial Day actually is. High School in Colorado creates documentary about and learns first hand about WWII from those who fought it.

Sometimes these "forecasters" take prior performance and use it as a indicator for future success. We see the new OC, the new recruits and improvement from last year... They see 5-31 over 3 years. What do you expect them to say? This is a show me world, hardly anyone outside of the Mean Green faithful are going to give us a snow ball's chance in Hell of doin anything this year. Besides, what fun is it to go into the year with a negative attitude?

I will miss Fouts as well, not enough to want to go back but there is something bittersweet about saying goodbye to the place. I have many great memories in that stadium, good times with friends, a few great wins sprinkled in there and despite the recent suck that we have endured the place does have a certain charm to it, a certain charisma. First game was in 99, don't remember who we played though, I was a senior in High School and trying to figure out which school to attend so most of my attention was paid to the girls in the student section and around campus... My favorite memory was the hard fought game against NMSU to clinch the sunbelt title, storming the field and tackling the goalposts with hundreds of other equally excited students! That was an amazing night at Fouts. But here's to the next set of great memories this year in Fouts and in the future at the new house!

Traditions are made by the fans, be those fans students, faculty, or local supporters. The students should make up the majority of that group because the should be the most fervent supporters. However we don't need to be turning people away from the program they support because they aren't "fan enough" or aren't a student. We have been talking about getting more community support for years and that attitude is not helpful. Besides, traditions only become traditions if they are kept and followed. If the fans don't like the tradition then they won't follow them and they don't become traditions in the first place...

A Real Worl Championship
hickoryhouse replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
A real world championship.... Czech Republic wins Gold at the world hockey tournament! -
Generally i agree with this line of thinking, our leaders need to be knowlegable ablout foreign culture so we do not offend. I think that is a door that swings both ways though. In my opinion our leaders shouldn't bow, a polit nod like he's seeing someone he knows in the grocery store maybe, but not a bow. We don't bow here and for many many years our leaders haven't bowed, at least not as often as we are seeing currently. Perhaps we should allow other countries to respect our culture an end the contact with a handshake, the way we do things here. This way there is no contrevercy. Not really a relevant or even important topic but I bought I would chime in.

Love the idea of getting more local Denton guys to the new stadium, on our team of course.

Sarcasm noted, however you do make a good point. The girlfriend is European and learning English, her 3rd or 4th language, was something that she decided to do so that she could function in American society as she immigrated here legally. I am not going to say that learning English should be a requirement to immigrate here legally, but I will say that it is a damn good idea.

All of this got me thinking, and searching for crap on my phone, and I was trying to figure out what the oil industry lumps into the water annually, how much is natural, how much is accident, has something like this ever happened before and how often does something like this happen that we don't know about?I found some interesting stuff, nothing that makes this ok but maybe it can add some perspective. http://www.incidentnews.gov/incident/6250. This is written about a massive spill in the gulf of Mexico in 79 http://oceanworld.tamu.edu/resources/oceanography-book/oilspills.htm this will take you to a very interesting online textbook provided by aTm. I tend to trust them on the oil stuff thanks to their tremendous engineering program. They talk about what is normal amounts of oil in the water and where it comes from etc. This year isn't normal of course but it also addresses several major oils spills as well. What we need here is some perspective on the issue as a whole. No amount of man made oilspills is acceptable however there is a certain amount of price you pay to play the game isn't there?

Being appointed to the SC without serving as a judge ever is a bit strange to me. Seems to me that in order to play professional football most people have to have played football before...However, as the dean of Harvard Law I think that she would have a good amount of knowledge on the subject at hand. We don't know her opinions on much through anything but interviews and etc. and she has no track record to speak of to help aid people in getting a handle on who she is an how she would conduct herself in that office. That makes me nervous. I am happy to read about her in regards to her reported stances stances on issues, they seem contrary to the administrations opinions in many ways, perhaps thats a good thing.

Immigration Reform
hickoryhouse replied to gangrene's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Just thought that I would throw something out there; JJT said I don't think that there is anything wrong with asking an immigrant to always carry proof of their legality in the country. We ask for every citizen to carry ID, I don't see a difference here. In fact I know that even in my personal life this is a practice that we feel to be logical and not at all insulting so it is common place and normal at my household. I understand the fears of racial profiling and I think that some of the needed steps are being taken to reduce these risks. Obeying the law is not an option, there are consequences. Immigration should be no different and ina state such as AZ which is effected by illegal immigration more than most they should be allowed to take, what they think, are the needed steps to try and solve it. As I said earlier in the thread, I don't think that this law will solve the problem. There are many other steps that need to be made in order for immigration reform to be effective. At least this is a step in the direction of dealing with the laws that are on the books already. -
Mavs Playoffs
hickoryhouse replied to MEANGREENMAN!'s topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Lets hope he doesn't but big ditto on that one. I don't think there is a better pg tutor for Roddy B than Kidd, but he just spared us to death all game last night and for much of the series as well. maybe he just needs a finisher, someone to go up and get the ball at the rim. I thought that was going to be Butler but unless he plays out of his mind that won't happen. I am nervous about bringing Kidd back though... especially is CP3 is available. -
Mavs Playoffs
hickoryhouse replied to MEANGREENMAN!'s topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Ithink that a bunch of the problem is coaching.... RC just got out coached by Pop last night and throughout this series. RC was afraid to play Roddy B and when he did play he produces on both ends of the floor! So of course after the Mavs actually come all the w2ay back and even take the lead for a minute the obvious choice is to put in Jet and sit the spark plug that ignited your run for the REST OF THE GAME!!!!!! Piss poor coaching by RC last night and throughout the series, inexcusable and needs to change. Blow up the roster, get rid of Rick Carlisle, Jet, Kidd, Damp, JJ Barea etc. Keep Dirk and Roddy B then make decisions about Butler and Haywood. Then go grab one of these other guys available this off season and give the Mavs a new look and a new attitude,if we get rid of Kidd we have an opening at the PG slot and Chris Paul has to leave NO because they can't afford him anymore... Maybe if we get another superstar type guy in here then Dirk won't have to do everything anymore, hell maybe Roddy B will become one of those superstars. what we have isn't working and it needs to change. Last night hurt to watch. -
Immigration Reform
hickoryhouse replied to gangrene's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
The US has different immigration laws for every contry on the planet, until recently even members of the EU such as the Czech Republic were not allowed to come to the states, even on vacation, without that several month long visa process while their neighbors to the north Germany only have to have a passport. The US still has incredibly standoffish relations with several Eastern European countries even though the communist regimes that used to govern there lost power more than 20 years ago. Immigration is not just a Mexico / America issue. It is a global one. If we determine that there are certain types of immigrants that we want (not meaning races) such as students, workers etc. then we should make the laws reflect that regardless of origin.
