My wife said we looked like trash bags. I guess that's appropriate in more ways than one.

I don't know what attendance will be like, but I hope it is good. Whether you liked him or not, he did what did and should be recognized for it. Winning 4 conference championships is no easy task on any level of football and for that he should be congratulated.

Well, if I said it about the men on Wednesday then I have to say it about the women today - bad loss.

He was an OC at NT in 92 & 93 and averaged 28ppg. What else do you need? He's done nothing but get more experience and become a better coach since then. He Coached Mitch Maher (NT HOF) and Troy Redwine (NT HOF).

Channel 5 pre-report for tomorrow's Startlegram...

I'm sure this will just be a continuation of the stuff we've seen in the DMN, DRC and have heard on the radio lately. The best thing for the athletic department to do is let the media have it's say and then go on to forgetting about us again until we hire a new coach. They barely covered us in the past, but now they want everyone to believe they have the "inside story" and the latest scoop. Fine, but the stories have all been so one-sided with a total negative slant that you have to wonder where their information is coming from which is taking away the creditbility. -
There are some major diffrences between the two. 1. Dodge played major college football and has an idea of what it takes to be succesful on a big time level. 2. Dodge has coached on the college level and knows the type of athlete, staff, committment, and community outreach he's going to need to be successful, especially since he's been at North Texas. In '93, with Dodge as OC, we average 28 ppg. I don't think he'll have a problem with his offense, he just needs to pick a mother a DC, get to recruiting, and re-energize the fan base. So, between the two give me Dodge because I know what I'll get out of him. I just don't know enough about Carthel

Yes, the conference tournament champion gets an automatic bid. What I was implying and the others were commenting on is we have never performed well in the conference tournament. It almost become a forgone conclusion that we will not win the conference tournament. In addition, I made reference to the post season NIT which is not for conference tournament champs but by invitation only where strenght of schedule, good wins, bad wins all come into play. This is the kind of loss that prevents you from getting invites to the NIT considering we do not have a lot of strong opponents on the schedule besides WKU. BTW, I'm not saying the season is over at all. I'm just commenting on this being a bad loss and our history for lack of consistency.

I thought this was bad, but I just saw Oral Roberts beat Kansas. I take back everything I wrote No, not really.

...for over 15 years I've watched this program take 1 step forward and 2 steps back. All the good from the Charolette win is gone in one night. I remember the win on TV against ULaLa a few years ago followed up with a bad conference tournament. When is this team going to learn that it does no good to get fired up for the big boys just to let down against the mid-majors. Whether the final bucket was good or not does not matter. The bottom line is if NT is for real, they should have put UTA away in a dominant way and been playing walk-ons late in the game. Just like SMU's lost to us in football was a bad one that may come back to haunt them, this is the kind of lost that can keep you out of the NIT (forget NCAA tournament) no matter what you do later in the year. It's especially bad considering it was at home.

Why would he leave a cush job in Hawaii as D-Cordinator where know one expects you to play D?

I don't want this to be a "who I know" search. Hopefully (and probably) he's just one of many in the mix. With that being said, So Miss is not known for their potent offenses. They have been a defensive team that likes to run the ball. This just isn't going to fly here considering what we've watched the past few years. So Miss is currently ranked 70th in total offense. They're 33 rushing and 96th passing - excited? BTW, SoMiss is 44th total defense.

DRC Let the search begin..lays out ground rules
GMoney replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Please no! So Miss is not exactly known for their offense! -
This is a great point. In order to really become a successful program, no one donor should have the capability of keeping it hostage (unless of course you're OSU and Boone Pickens ). Mac wasn't there for UNT before his buddy came while he was giving money all over the place in the Houston area. Now we're to believe he's all for the best of NT. No, Mac is for DD not NT and that's fine. However, don't blast a school you could and should have been supporting for years but weren't onboard with until they hired someone you knew.

I hope this is just the first name. Not that Nix is bad, but I want to see who else throws their name into the hat.

George is allowed to have an opinion just like anyone else. He's not a decision maker or for that matter even has influence over the decision makers. George's opinion was not one of firing or not firing. His only disagreement was firing him during the season. He felt as though it could have waited until end of season and that DD deserved that much. This by no means compromises his status as a professional. He's not an analyst or consultant to the program. For goodness sake, he's a play by play announcer who's opinion was asked on radio show that he co-hosts. Which by the way, his voice has been the only positive media outlet NT has had in the DFW market for 15 plus years and running.
-
Fire Dunham? That's a joke right? He has been nothing but class and a great representation of our university. In addition, he has been the only positive media outlet in the Dallas area that NT has had for years.
-
Let's be careful about commenting on any comments made by current players. What are they suppose to say? They're still playing for the guy and whether they agreed with the firing or not, they can't and shouldn't say anything bad about a Coach they're still playing for. So, let's cut JQ some slack.

Let me correct a few facts here with Dodge and give a little additional information. Dodge was under Dennis Parker for his two years NT. This was in 92 and 93. The offense in 92 was good in 93 it was great and averaged around 28 points per game. The problem was our defensive front that year and we couldn't stop the run of which Dodge had nothing to do with. Dodge's best season at Newman Smith was 5 and 5 and the reason he left was because of the opening of Creekview and he knew his talent pool was going to be cut in half. This is exactly what happened. I don't know if Dodge is the guy or not. I'm not endorsing him and saying no because he's a high school coach. However, what I have been told by those who know him better than I do is that he would consider an offer to move even though Riley is still in high school. I did say consider not definitely take. It would probably depend on the overall deal. My only worry about Dodge will be the relationships he has with other coaches especially in the area and how that might hurt recruiting. I've heard that he is not the best liked (maybe jealousy) maybe due to running up the score, but it is something that must be considered in recruiting the area. IMHO I think he should be looked at but I really want to see what Coaches out there throw their name into the hat. Let's see who is really interested in the job, look at the credentials and make this a truly thorough and even national search. I want to know a coach's philosophy, his background in recruiting, his energy and if his personality is contagious and is he personable. Finally, and most important that he will go into every game with the mind set that we will win not just keep it close.

North Texas beat Fla. International in 7 OTs
GMoney replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
We won and that's great. However, I just can't get over the fact that 2 teams were given the ball on their opponents 25 yard line 7 different times and neither team could score 1 stinkin touchdown! That was truly as bad as it gets. 7 OTs were needed to determine rank 119 or 118. UGLY! -
DRC: Lean Green, NT offense dead last in 1A
GMoney replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Here's another thought, if we are this bad passing, and are having trouble holding blocks and with assigments AND we like to run the ball nearly every down - why not become an option team? AF and Navy know they'll have trouble recruiting big physical linemen who can blow you off the ball and wear you down. Therefore, they run the option. It slows down the blitz, it causes the defense to wait and be reactionary and linemen don't have to hold blocks for long periods of time. Finally, people don't prepare for it anymore. It may be one team on the schedule a year that runs the option, everything else is now the spread. This is the only solution I see. If you are this far in the season and haven't picked up the current offense any better than what we've seen the past 3 weeks, then it's probably gonna be a problem all year! If not, it's going to be too late. Run a veer, run a flex bone, run a wish bone, run a double wing, I don't care, but maybe something will work to salvage what is going on right now. BTW, I'm not promoting this long-term unless of course it works, then it was all my idea . -
Let's put two more potential names in the hat. John L. Smith at Michigan State and Dennis Franchione from A&M. Smith was great at Louisville and never should have left. Fran was great at TCU, good at Bama, but for some reason has struggled at A&M. Also, please don't mention any coaches from SoMiss. Their offense is basically what we see at Fouts right now - not very good. Also, I don't want a defensive coach as Head Coach. I would prefer to have a gambler or even a mad scientist (like Leach) right now. If we want a breath of fresh air then let's really get a breath of fresh air and think different. I've heard a lot of mention about Todd Dodge. Coach Dodge was great when he was here before coaching WR's and DBs. His style is obviously wide open and should attract a passing QB and some decent WRs. Even though he's a high school coach he does have college experience as both a player and assistant. He probably wouldn't have to move, would get more money, could keep his very profitable football camp going and maybe get to coach his son in two years. Probably not a bad fit. My only question is this, how is he viewed by other high school coaches in the area? There is potential jealously factor for all the things that Southlake provides that others can't get. Not to mention the scores by which he beats some teams by which may be viewed as running up the score. I know it seems kind of petty to look at this, but I wouldn't bring it up if I had not heard this mentioned before. Remember, he's going to have to go into these High Schools to recruit. BTW, why would considering RC Slocum be any different than the offense we see out there now? 3 yds and a cloud of dust. Please, No Slocum!!

Bahaa Bahaa, oh goodness, my stomach hurts!!!

We must be "undetermined"
-
This is especially true when the defense is in a reactionary role. The "O" can dictate tempo, change snap counts, go no huddle, or come slow to the line when they sense they're getting winded. The defense must always be alert. They must get to the line quicker, be ready to respond at all times and all 11 must fly to the ball. No one on D can "take a play off" which happens (at times by design) on offense when a play goes away. If a DL goes down, he's back up and in his pursuit angle, LB must fly sideline to sideline and DB's are always in pursuit angles many times running 25 to 30 yds per play. BTW, you're not going to win many games when you have more punts (7) than pass completions (6).
