What's the opposite of a 7 footer? That would be me. -
4 Utep Bb Leave Team...possible Transfers?
GMoney replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I just want the 7 footer for a defensive presence. Actually, I just want him so I can say we finally have a 7 footer on the roster. It would be nice to be able to see eye to eye w/the big boys. -

Drcblog Odufuwa's Former Coach Says Nt High On Forwards List
GMoney replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Royce Johnson is a UNT man. He played some football at NT (w/me in the earlier 90s) and also was a walkon basketball player for a year or two. Most NT fans will remember him by his nickname - Snoop. This is starting to look very promising! -
Very funny post ! Helmet head Trilli or better yet Gazoo from the Flintstones or whatever that little martian's name was!
-
Absolutely, I didn't want to go there either. However, he was definitely the coach that JJ took over for in his 1 year stint as Memphis' head coach. This surprised me at first, but I do believe that a guy who does not have a history of wrong doing deserves a second chance (unlike a Bobby Huggins or Jerry Tarkanenian). On the positive side, he brings a wealth of experience and is a heck of a coach. If he can recruit (and hopefully stays here for longer than a year) this has the makings of being something really special.
-
No, but they can still dedicate more funding to BBall than possibly another mid-major trying to support both. BTW, Pacific is not bad, but So. Ala has a history and is definitely more of a basketball school than any of those mentioned above.
-
The pay is just not there to keep a 3rd assistant coach on the men's BB team. After JJ and Leonard, my guess is the pay is a lot less than what other D1 schools can offer.

Horrible Shooting at Virginia Tech. A shooter has killed at least 20 (21 including the shooter). It happened on campus this morning, students were killed including in classrooms and in another Hall (2 separate areas). Still breaking news... http://www.cnn.com/

Andy Katz from ESPN is also reporting it as true. He's a young up and comer, but isn't that what Arkansas just fired?
-
Thank goodness! This takes Sturns out of the point. When McCoy needs a spell then Bell takes the point or visa versa. Whew!

It really doesn't bother me that much. As long as the uniform as a whole is sharp then I don't care. Being the Mean Green doesn't mean that every article of clothing on your uniform needs to be green. I prefer the green helmet, but if the white helmet is done nicely, like a few I've seen drafted up on this board, then the uniform has a chance of looking pretty good. But, white helmet/green helmet, it's all about how it is done.

Eddie was a legend that took a backseat to no one in the game of college football. He'll be missed. link

Coaches should follow heat -- before the fall starts March 20, 2007 By Gary Parrish CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer Tell Gary your opinion! http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10071660/1 South Alabama's John Pelphrey is a finalist for the South Florida job. If it's offered and the money is right and the contract is long and his family likes Tampa, then he should accept the position and immediately hire movers. Tubby Smith? He was once hot, but is now ice cold in Kentucky. (Getty Images) A jump from the Sun Belt to the Big East is a big jump, in both prestige and tax bracket. Plus, it would be fun to compete in a league on national television multiple times a week, and matching wits with mentor Rick Pitino could be special on some level. Want more reasons Pelphrey should go? I could list 10, easy. But there is only one reason that matters, and it's more about Pelphrey's profession than Pelphrey himself. Even if he's unsure whether it would be the right career move -- that's the word, by the way -- Pelphrey should go because he's a college basketball coach, and it's hard to imagine a more fragile business. One day you are lauded, the next day you are loathed. So the smartest thing to do is move while you're hot because you won't stay hot long. Few stay hot long. As proof, I submit Rod Barnes. You might remember Barnes as the tactician coach at Mississippi, a remarkably pleasant man who led his alma mater to a 27-win season and trip to the Sweet 16 in 2001. For his work, Barnes was named the Naismith National Coach of the Year. Five years later he was run out of Oxford and reduced to assisting Jeff Capel at Oklahoma. This week, he became a head coach again ... at Georgia State. Kentucky's Tubby Smith won the Naismith in 2003. Now his fans hate him. Illinois' Bruce Weber won the Naismith in 2005. Now his fans hate him. Then there's the story of Larry Eustachy, the Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 2000 at Iowa State. Three years later he was fired for partying with college students. Two years after that he resurfaced at Southern Mississippi. That's a big fall. Then there's the story of Matt Doherty, the Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 2001 at North Carolina. Two years later he was fired for not winning enough. One year after that he resurfaced at Florida Atlantic. Now he's at SMU. That's a big fall. Then there's the story of Dan Dakich, and boy is it a great story. He was offered the West Virginia job in 2002 after building Bowling Green into one of the better mid-majors. He accepted, then backed out and returned to Bowling Green a hero, at least temporarily. Last week he resigned under pressure, and if he's lucky, Dakich will be an assistant somewhere soon making a fraction of what he would have made in his first season at West Virginia. Again, big fall. So the point is simple, and it should be a lesson for Pelphrey and all other desirable coaches -- guys like Winthrop's Gregg Marshall, Washington State's Tony Bennett, Wright State's Brad Brownell and Southern Illinois' Chris Lowery. They are each hot names now, but there is no guarantee they will be hot names one year from now. Next season Darrin Horn might win big at Western Kentucky, and he'll be the hot name. Or Tim Jankovich might win big at Illinois State, and he'll be the hot name. Or some guy you've never heard of will lead a school you've never heard of to the Elite Eight, and he'll be the hot name. Consequently, it's crucial to take the money when you can because the money might not be there in 12 months. Perceptions change with every win or loss, and the same man who was labeled a rising star in 2007 can be described as a sinking ship in 2008 regardless of common sense suggesting he's probably not any different one way or another. That's why Stan Heath was smart. He has had one truly impressive season as a coach, and it came when he led Kent State to the Elite Eight in 2001-02. Naturally, Heath was labeled the next great thing, and now he's a millionaire because Frank Broyles used piles of cash to lure him to Arkansas. Fast-forward to present day and some boosters would reportedly love to use piles of cash to make Heath leave Arkansas. Why? Because the same people who thought Heath was brilliant now believe he's not brilliant, which makes him like roughly 90 percent of all other coaches. As it stands, Billy Gillispie is great, and if Kentucky needs a replacement for Smith -- and it can't get Florida's Billy Donovan -- a large segment of the fan base would love UK to pursue the Texas A&M coach. But if Jeremy Hunt scores 25 points Thursday and leads Memphis to a win over the Aggies in the Sweet 16, suddenly John Calipari will be great, and then he'll be the object of Kentucky fans' obsession while Gillispie is called overrated. It's silly, for sure. But it's an undeniable reality. Opinions of college coaches swing wildly these days. So if I'm Pelphrey or Lowery or pretty much anybody I'm spending the next week searching for the best job available for the biggest paycheck. That would be the smart move. And in the coaching business it's imperative to make the smart move while you're still smart because nobody thinks you're smart very long. But don't take my word for it. Just ask Dan Dakich. If you can find him.

What's up Mitch? Big Rod was my boy. BTW, he was taller than 6'6" (closer to 6'8") and was close to 380lbs. They literally took him to a matress factory to weigh him! I remember taking him home from practice one day in my Honda Prelude! The 2 wheels on the left side were barely touching the road and I had to go extra slow over speed bumps to prevent bottoming out the frame! I tried to take Big Rod under my wing and help him to adjust, but I think the commitment on the college level was a little too much for him to take, especially with Parker who was really strict on weight limit. Which brings me to the second biggest guy to come through NT (only guys from 1990 will remember him) - Scott Riddle from Longview. Scott Riddle was 6'6" (roughly 335 to 350) with the widest shoulders I've ever seen. Bryon Gross is a close friend (sorry Byron), but I saw Scott Riddle dang near drive Gross to the track around the field. Gross couldn't get around him! Funny story - Riddle hurt his foot at practice and was sent in to the trainer and he didn't come back out. After practice, I go in to get some ice treatment and team doctor walks in with Scott. Scott's on crutches and they send him into the locker room to get dressed while the doctor and our head trainer (Tim) talk. The doctor says, "What the hell did you send me?" Tim replies, "Yeah, that's a big boy isn't he? So, how's his foot?" Dr. replies, "Foot? Foot? I just told him he broke his dorsal fin!" That Spring Parker came in and after spring ball gave all the linemen a weight limit to be under by 2-adays. Scott showed up in his beat up truck, never unpacked, went to weigh-ins, came straight out, back into his truck and drove straight back to Longview. I haven't seen him since then.

This Article Will Raise Some Dander & Some Eyebrows
GMoney replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I've heard (from pretty good insiders) that La Tech will NEVER go back to the SunBelt. Two main reasons (1) They feel like they have an advantage in recruiting over ULaLa and ULaMon by being in a "perceived" better conference. If they come back to the Belt that is instantly gone! (2) Maybe not known to many here, but LaTech has a small pocket of some pretty wealthy and powerful boosters. These boosters have made it known that if LaTech goes back to the Belt, they're gone! LaTech may struggle financially to stay in WAC, but they also can't afford to leave. Sorry, I meant WAC which is of course why they're stuggling financially (travel, no interest, west coast time zones etc.). -
Bingo. You just can't turn the ball over against an athletic team and let them get quick baskets. Not to mention wild ass shots and missed layups that should be points for you that get turned against you. This has been a problem all year and has hurt us all year - nothing changed. Second, and a huge momentum changer - C. Watston's missed dunk that ended up as a 3 pointer on the other end (a 5 point swing). I believe that would have cut the game to 5 points instead the lead was extended back to 10. Game Over. Well here the situation from the DMN by Bret Vito: Despite its struggles offensively, UNT was only down six points with 14:38 left in the second half and looked ready to cut the lead to four as Watson took a clear path to the basket. Any optimism was shortlived, though, as Watson missed the dunk off the back of the rim and Memphis responded with a 15-4 run.

I know a lot of this is coach speak, but it still has me asking myself one question - we've concentrated all year long on the close losses but do we really know how good this team can be if it all comes together? We've had all the inside basketball guys tell us how athletic our team is, how long, and how big but as fans have we really seen this play out on the court? Could it be this team might be better than we all think and it all comes together tomorrow or is that just wishful thinking?
-
Absolutely, the insult was on JJ and NT. For this radio announcer to even ask JJ about what his opponent is going to do 4 rounds deep in the tournament is an insult to NT, JJ and our fans. JJ handled it the best way possible. It's like the perverbial, "have you stopped beating....(you know the rest)" question.
-
My goodness! After reading their thread that about what JJ said, that's what got their panties in a wad? God forbid that JJ thinks the #1 ranked team in the country might beat the #5 ranked team in the country. What an insult! Yeah, you better try and run up the score against NT to prove him wrong. He just crushed Memphis, that's some of the best smack talk I've ever heard! Don't take that lying down Memphis.
-
Yeah, that really sounds like JJ. He's known to run his mouth. This is same guy who talked about Belhaven like they were last year's National Champs, but you're trying to tell me he went on a Birmingham radio station, which is CUSA territory, and "popped off" about a number 15 seed he has to face in less than a week. You can do better than that. I pretty sure if he said anything bad it was in jest. He gave Memphis nothin but love last night on Channel 11 news w/Babe Laufenberg.
-
I believe it's the 2 games in the morining. Usually 4 games are played in an arena on a given day. The session would be the 2 games before the break or the 2 games after the break.
-
I just love how CBS (& the NCAA) love the story lines. Let's put NT and JJ up against a former team he coached for under Tic Price. The only reason I did not want us matched up against Memphis is because they are very athletic. Being that this is our strenght, it takes away from what we do best. This game will come down to who is hot and hits their 3's and defends the perimeter. We've gotten better at perimeter defense, but we need to rise to a much higher level to guard Memphis' shooters. That losing streak was 19 games!
