Bingo! I also believe it was the one-sided nature of the report. Reporting an allegation is understandable. Reporting an allegation as serious as racism without character witnesses in TD defense and couple that with no front page retraction as promised and you will have an upset person. It's one thing to attack a player's/coach's play or decisions relative to job performance, but when you report on man's character (even if it is a story), you better cover all sides are be prepared for results that come from it. I think one issue that many people are missing here has nothing to do with, "TD has a high profile job and he should be able to deal with it. Or, if he was at UT or A&M it would be worse." Most coaches can deal with criticism relative to their coaching and team preparation. Coaches and players are 10 times harder on themselves than fans are. They carry this stuff with them to sleep, to class, on the road - everywhere (at least the ones who care)! But, how do you defend your character? How do you defend you character when you can't speak about a situation because there is a potential lawsuit threat? When one article spreads to a national story and you can't comment of course you're going to be upset. In this day and age this will never die. It will never go away. Ten years from now someone will google the story. Ten years from now, when we've all forgotten it, TD may have to explain it again (and by the way, there isn't a retraction to google). Who knows, it could prevent him from getting a job. With this kind of stuff, you just don't know. That's why you get upset and don't easily forget - I wouldn't and haven't. TD is a friend and I know how hurt he was by this situation and it's why I came to his defense, because he couldn't.

Yes, it's true. Don called me last week to tell me he was protected by Dallas from the upcoming draft. As a side note, Johnny Quinn was also protected before he signed with Green Bay.

Breaking News Horton Commits To U N T !
GMoney replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Simple philosophy about star ratings. In the grand scheme, they don't mean anything until you do it on the field. However, you would rather have recruits with them than without them. As the late great Ron Shanklin used to say, "Potential means you haven't done s#%t yet!" At least those with a solid star rating are being evaluated by multiple people who all see the "potential". -
I agree. Our offense should be much improved and we may be in the same situation as last year - having to out gun a few opponents. However, I do think the defense will show improvement as the year progresses. The LB's are going to have to carry us and be very active. We do return Gilmore and Miller who will have to serve as the experience anchors on the line. As for the secondary, simply a change in scheme and the number of recruits and added competition will make them better. Hopefully the D will start hitting its stride as we approach conference because if memory serves me right our non-conference schedule will be tough on a young D.

I personally know a few people on this list, but one of them I know extremely well. Rick Roberts is my brother's best friend and I've known RJ since he was born. You couldn't meet two nicer people. Big Rick loves his basketball and his son, but he's not one of those overbearing, do or die type of parents. His son is very good and every once and a while Big Rick brings it up in a conversation.

I've said this many times before, all-district honors don't mean a thing. That stuff, especially on the H.S. level, is so political it can be sickening. If you're on a bad team and do great, you may get nothing. You could have two studs in your conference at the same position who beat you out. Does that mean your not deserving? No, all three of you could be college caliber players. You can be average player on a great team and get all-conference because of the attention people around you get. Then, you have the coaches (not all of them) who say, "You vote for my kid here and I'll vote for you kid there." You can't compare one district to another district's honors. You don't know the level of competition, the strenght of the district or the individual players w/whom you compete against for those honors in a particular district. And more importantly, that changes every year. What I would like to see, which I'm sure the coaches have, is what he's done lined up across from other D1 talent. If he's held his own then at his size and our need he's worth the risk.

True, but at least it's a road win.

Another inexcusable road loss. Troy, Denver, and FAU - Un Friggin believable!

The women are playing really well right now. Hopefully they are peaking at the right time. They're getting good balanced play with many different players stepping up at different times. I wanted to post this before MTSU comes to town. MTSU is very very good!

Reger McDowell, North Dallas has left ND and transferred back to Duncanville. I saw him play a lot this year and was not overly impressed. Last I knew he has an offer from Alabama. However, his teammate Desean Miles has out played him much of this year. Desean is also bigger and more of a scoring threat. He reminds me of a Ben Bell starter kit. I've had mention him and his teammate, Corey Bradley, to JJ and staff. Corey reminds me of Harold Stewart. He's about 2 inches shorter, but has longer arms, rebounds like Stewart but has more of an outside game. He's in the top 20 in the area in rebounding and will be featured this week in the DMN as an up and coming post player. Bradley does have one more year (Jr.).

I've been really critical of our road play, so hopefully this is the start of turning it around. Great job tonight. We absolutely destroyed ASU on the boards.
-
And that's the same Troy that beat us

This really shouldn't be asked, but how was he transporting them?

First, that's the reason why I mentioned in my first sentence that I don't know the full story of Vito's relationship with the athletic department as a whole (not just TD). Their relationship was "rocky" before TD even got there. Second, the "editor's decision" of a front page article was "promised", whether or not it is followed through upon by the DRC is another story. However, if you were the subject of the original article, had to defend your character on a local and national scale, and there has been no action since, it would tend to leave a bad taste in your mouth. This was not "x's and o's" bashing, this was a racism charge that never goes away.
-
I don't know or will even act like I know the whole story between the relationship with Vito and the athletic department as a whole (not just TD). However, I do know that I am still waiting for the promised front page story/retraction on the whole NAACP story that was promised on a situation that is obviously over. I do believe that story, which deeply and personally hurt TD is not forgotten by all those who were involved. You need to look no further than all those on this board and in the media who worried about the long-term effects a story like that could have in recruiting and damaging a man's character.

Phil Bennett is a great coach defensive coach and a better man. I would take him in a minute. I don't know what his options will be, but he'll will definitely be coaching in someone's program next year. Of course, I'd love to have DeLoach as well.

This is a bad bad bad road team. A 7 point lead in overtime and lose. Lackluster defense and could not handle the press. With the 7 point lead, Troy goes into a full court trap and runs off 9 unanswered in less than minute and a half to take the lead. A horrible loss.
-
I agree 100%! Also, keep this in mind, there is NOTHING wrong with having 2 guys on the court who can handle the ball. Having a 1 and 2 that are interchangeable will benefit this team down the road. Finally, this team is starting to get dangerous! It appears that Dez, McCoy and Thompson are starting to find their shots. When you add this to Dennis and we now have depth, athletes, and shooters. Quincy also seems to be coming back to form just in time for conference.

It's Evidently Official Lacroix Has Resigned
GMoney replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I will speak more about Coach LaCroix at a later date, but don't mistake the fact he was away from the game with not being able to coach. He was away from the game by choice and he wasn't completely away. Let's just say I'm not happy he resigned, if given the latitude he could have and would have produced results. However, I do understand why he resigned. -
I agree with eveyone. Two thoughts (1) I think it took us some time to get use to the speed of the game. OSU is quick, but not even in the same category as UT's guards. This lead to the slow start and all the early turnovers. Once we adjusted, we played pretty even. I'm also worried about the streaky shooting of our guards. (2) We need for Quincy to start hitting the short range jumpers again and finishing down low. This team was strongest last year when Quincy and Wooden were a dual threat. We need that back going into conference.

UT is really good and I really hate admitting this! We are going to have to be solid on the ball, contest jump shots and try (and I do mean TRY) to stop the dribble penetration (get your mind out of the gutter ). If not, it will ugly real quick. Try to stay within striking distance until the 5 min mark and we've got a chance. I don't think UT is quite there yet in the post, so both Quincy and Keith need to have big days. So far, they haven't both put it together on the same day.
-
Is he getting to work quick or just bringing them with him from recruiting at Houston?
-
Those Colin Dennis stats were unbelievable and just showed why not having him against UTA was so important. On a night were no one else could buy a bucket, it would have been nice to have Colin as an option. Great win by the men and hopefully they will handle the success, get better, and be ready to play from tip next game.
