Charn Usawachoke from Thailand read in the North Texan that we needed to have a certain attendance to reobtain D1 football status. He had attended games as a student and enjoyed them so he sent $10,000 to the Athletic department to buy tickets for distribution to support the effort. Up until then the University Admins had no idea who he was. UNT contacted him and he later gave a $1,000,000 academic gift and has since given a $22 million donation. The expansion of Fouts was from a temporary Student Fee increase.

It was required at the time of our return to FBS, then known as D1 as opposed to D1A. The students passed an increase in student fees that would be reduced back to the original fees once the expansion was paid off. Someone earlier said a donor paid to add the seats but that is not correct. We also had to have an average attendance of an amount I do not recall (maybe 18,000). It was a mistake to rollback the student fees. I believe if had been left out of the language for the student vote it still would have passed.
