Article On Canales And The Coaching Search
McKinneyMiner replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
This is something that Mike Price at UTEP has been absolutely phenomenal at during his time in El Paso... Right now he is an embattled coach because he isn't really producing the winning seasons, but the PEOPLE (not just the hard core fans) of El Paso love him and he has generated a ton of positive publicity for the University and program... He has raised awareness of UTEP football in the community amongst those who previously couldn't have possibly cared less... He has established very well attended camps in Dallas and Houston that promote his program, he requires his players to spend time at schools in the community, his players actually call up season ticket holders and personally thank them for the support of the program and he lives and breathes the city of El Paso... His positive attitude about the program and the players is very infectious... Now, I am not saying that Mike Canales is the man for this job... But someone who shows the same willingness to embrace Denton, the surrounding area and DFW at large is... The trick will be to find the right combination of ra ra and x's and o's... Die hard fans don't need to be sold, the community and the fringe fans do... -
ASU rallied pretty well and only trail 35-31 at half...

This will be my first game of the year... My son and I will be heading in from McKinney... Really looking forward to it...

I watched the entirety of the UTEP-Pacific game and they are definitely for real... They can shoot the 3 and they pass well into the interior... UTEP had an 11-point lead at halftime that was completely erased at the beginning of the 2nd half when Pacific began to rain in 3's from all over the place... They hit something like 7 or 8 in a row... In their game with UCLA they hit their first two 3's and then went 1-21 the rest of the game and got blown out... They shot 25% for the game... Like most teams that live by the 3, if Pacific is missing them they are in some trouble, although they do have a nice low post player in Sam Willard who had 26 against the Miners and 18 against the Bruins...

Joe Tresey was USF's DC last year... He is currrently coaching defensive backs with Omaha of the UFL under Jeff Jagodzinski...

Atmosphere isn't always about huge numbers... It is about passion... It would be great if UNT could average 7500 fans a game, but that is probably down the road... Much smaller crowds can create an incredible atmosphere simply by injecting passion into the proceedings and getting everyone excited and cheering... I went to a UTEP game against Rice in Houston at Autry Court where the atmosphere and crowd were incredible... The students are called the Autry Army and they are fantastic... Vocal, profane and highly spirited... The place only holds about 5000, but they were LOUD and raucous... This is the type of thing I would love to see UNT develop...

Game At Wrigley Will Have Only One Endzone
McKinneyMiner replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
They just confirmed today that none of the 11 humans a player could potentially run into is made of brick... This game is the goofiest clusterf*** in the history of ever... So goofy I can't bear to not watch and have the DVR set... -
From 1983-1985 Matthews, Carthel and Hal Humme were all assistants for Bill Yung at UTEP... Matthews had followed Yung from West Texas State to El Paso... They didn't have much success themselves at UTEP, but some of their later recruits paved the way for UTEP's finest seasons in a dog's age when they went 7-4 in 1987 and then 10-3 in 1988 with an Independence Bowl appearance against Brett Favre and Southern Miss... I wouldn't mind RV taking a good long look at Matthews...

We'd get votes for sure... I think wins against Rice and UTA would definitely do the trick... But back-to-back wins against Big 12 opponents would be hard to ignore... One of them a road win...

Hofstra got obliterated last night... Yes it was against North Carolina, but they weren't even remotely competitive... If WKU can't beat them then "uh boy"...
-
I admit to not knowing anything about Washington, but I do know that TT doesn't necessarily have the best of it against any of the other three... St. Mary's, UTEP and UNM are no pushovers and I expect at least one of them to blow the Red Raiders out... St. Mary's just beat St. John's and UNM beat Arizona St. The Raiders also play NMSU who is no cupcake... No surprise to me at all if they lost all four... With UNT and these others, TT plays a really tough OOC schedule this year...

Yes, Rushing The Court May Have Been Unnecessary...
McKinneyMiner replied to NTerock's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Rushing the court implies that UNT fans not only thought they weren't going to win, but that they didn't think they were supposed to win... I'm not saying that this is how the fans actually felt, but this is the impression it gives Tech fans and anyone else who watches... Now, if UNT beats Kansas @ Phog Allen then the gloves are off and anyone who is there should rush the court - security, students and consequences be damned... -

How You Can Channel Your Nt Hoops Euphoria
McKinneyMiner replied to SUMG's topic in Mean Green Basketball
You must live in a delightfully dedicated household... Carry on...!! -
I actually despise NMSU and couldn't possibly care less about ULL... LOL What I don't like (and this isn't you) is the arrogant perception in college basketball that if it isn't played somewhere on the East Coast, the Midwest or some parts of the Deep South it isn't played at all... Teams like UTEP, NMSU and UNT are scary for anyone but you'll never convince the doucher basketball fan of that...
-
You do realize NMSU won the WAC tournament last year and went to the NCAA tournament where they lost by 3 to Michigan St... I don't think an early loss to a really solid program is a good measuring stick for ULL... I think in college basketball you have to be careful about hasty impressions of teams... I'm sure if UNT beats Texas Tech tonight fans in the big 12 will be writing them off since they have no idea who or what UNT is... NMSU is better than some people might think, as is UNT...
-
They lowered the spread when they found out they were supposed to "suck a fat one"...
-
That is a really bizarre looking stadium... I had no idea that is what Malone looked like... Weird...

Without really knowing for sure, I am willing to bet FSU has the support of the Seminole tribe because it is very beneficial to the tribe to stay on the good side of a large public institution such as FSU... I have some knowledge of the Seminole tribe in another area and one thing I know is they are savvy business people... What does NDU have to offer the Sioux...?? Apparently not enough...
-
This is one of my all-time pet peeves... The name has been Fighting Sioux for God knows how long and now they are being SUED to change it... NOT by the offended populace, but by a college sports association... Ridiculous... UND is probably lucky I am not their chancellor... I would have told the NCAA to blow it out their a**...

Phil Fulmer, Why Aren't We Considering Him?
McKinneyMiner replied to Got5onIt's topic in Mean Green Football
True, but they have been fired from D-1 jobs and are re-treads that experienced off-field issues during their tenures in D-1... I was under the impression that we could do better than to have anyone who had ever been fired and were looking for a coach with impeccable character... Bowden and Coker don't quite fit the bill... If only Joe Paterno were younger... Never been fired and no serious off-field issues... -
Wow, Anyone Watching Stanford?

Phil Fulmer, Why Aren't We Considering Him?
McKinneyMiner replied to Got5onIt's topic in Mean Green Football
Your initial post said you wanted a "name" coach... There is no such thing as a 1AA "name" coach... About the closest thing you'll find is Jerry Moore at Appalachian St. and he ain't leaving there and he's like 100... -
Phil Fulmer, Why Aren't We Considering Him?
McKinneyMiner replied to Got5onIt's topic in Mean Green Football
I think RV at least owes it to the fan base to give a ring to Urban Meyer, Nick Saban and Mack Brown and tell them he has got a cool $1 million dollars and a new 30,000 seat stadium waiting for them if they'll just quit their current jobs... I could barely finish that sentence without punching myself in the face... -
The nightmare wouldn't be that Mike Canales was hired away while the university was making up it's mind... The nightmare would be that Canales went somewhere and was an incredible success while the new coach at UNT floundered for a few years before being canned... There is nothing more horrifying or embarrassing than to have had the answer in house all along and not realized it... Right now Canales is riding a wave of good feeling because he is new and has had some obvious success... That doesn't make him the slam dunk candidate some think he is... At the very least, however, he deserves to be strongly considered and evaluated before being thrown back into the water...
