ULM's Malone Stadium Is Rockin' Hosting Baylor On ESPN
McKinneyMiner replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Northeast Louisiana had two back to back stud quarterbacks... Right before Humphries was the QB they had Bubby Brister who went on to play for the Steelers and was John Elway's backup in Denver on the 1990's Super Bowl teams... Brister has the worst name in the history of football, but he could play... -
First let me give a huge shout out to Stix (George) who was kind enough to give me a ticket for my son on Saturday... I know it was a bit of a pain to get the ticket to me and my son and I really appreciate it... We had a great time despite the obvious end result disappointment... A few observations of the game... 1) DT is maddening as hell... He makes some perfect passes and then makes some of the easiest throws look impossible... To top it off it looks like a Chinese fire drill out there sometimes... He doesn't seem to have a calming effect in the huddle or at the snap... 2) The kicking situation is a nightmare... Going for it on 4th and 16 and 4th and 11 faced with short FGs is tantamount to giving up... I can't believe the coaches have lost complete confidence in the kicking game... I honestly think it would have been better to have thrown Olen back in there and given him another shot... No worse than going for it on 4th and 16... 3) Zac Whitfield looked like a disaster waiting to happen... Prior to the long touchdown pass that beat him there were a couple of other occassions where he was beaten deep but poorly thrown balls saved him... 4) Didn't the onside kick only bounce once...?? Isn't there a new rule that says if the ball only bounces once into the air on an onside kick you can call a fair catch...?? Not totally positive about that... I know it's a bang bang play and the first reaction of the up men isn't to call a fair catch, but hopefully they'll have it in their minds if it comes up again... I really enjoyed the game and the atmosphere... I think as a crowd we are improving all the time... Can't wait for the Tuesday night extravaganza... Hopefully we'll be 3-3 heading into it...

That is actually one of the best ideas I have heard in a long time... I don't know if they can get away with closing the dining halls completely, but the idea of giving free dogs, nachos and drinks to students with a dining card is a fantastic idea... Wish I had thought of it...

Nation of Texas College Football Rankings- Week Four
McKinneyMiner replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This list is a joke... UTEP has played Oklahoma and Mississippi tough and blew out New Mexico St and they are behind both Texas St. and UTSA... Hardly... -
The announced attendance at the game last night was like 14,200... The stadium holds 29,000, so it was basically half full... It seemed about half full on tv... We need to make sure that we get a better crowd on our Tuesday night game than that... That stadium in Buffalo is a dump, though... And they face some of the worst sports apathy of any school out there... They probably aren't entirely disappointed with 14,000...

I have been working on my penetrating analysis of Daniel Sams' Heisman candidacy... 1st and 10 at UNT 35 Daniel Sams rush for 3 yards to the NoTex 32. 3rd and 1 at UNT 42 Daniel Sams rush for 7 yards to the NoTex 35 for a 1ST down. 2nd and 6 at UNT 47 Daniel Sams rush for 5 yards to the NoTex 42. 1st and 10 at KSU 49 Daniel Sams rush for 4 yards to the NoTex 47. 21 35 I thought he briliantly ran out the clock with 2 minutes to go with his team ahead 35-21... 4 rushes 19 yards I think Geno Smith and some others are slightly ahead of him, but I think Sams put himself in the conversation with this tantalizing effort...

Here's the problem with our scheduling
McKinneyMiner replied to MeanGreenHoops's topic in Mean Green Football
In the case of USC and UCLA that might be true, although there are a few within reasonable distance... But in the case of Washington and Colorado I think the real reason might have more to do with the quality of close FCS schools... Eastern Washington, Montana and Montana St. might not be that attractive to Washington since those schools tend to be at the top of the FCS every year... And Colorado might not want all that much to do with Northern Colorado, Northern Arizona or Weber St. either... None of those FCS schools is extremely close to the larger FBS school, but close enough to make the trip worth it if they were offered a chance... They aren't being offered those chances... Scheduling FCS is a tricky business because you never know when one of those schools is going to have an exceptional team or if your school might have a bit of down year and run into a school that matches up for a season... Nothing sucks the enthusiasm out of a fan base like a loss to FCS... Nothing... The only light at the end of the tunnel of losing to an FCS school is that the game is early and can be overcome with other OOC games and conference play... See Temple who lost to Villanova (an FCS powerhouse) in 2009 but still played UCLA in a bowl game... -
Texas A&M at SMU not sold out?

Certainly that had to be a bit of some kind... LOL -
Texas A&M at SMU not sold out?
McKinneyMiner replied to Coach Bill Lewis's topic in Mean Green Football
I think SMU has made a huge mistake here with the ticket prices... I have been to a fair amount of SMU games in the past 5 years if the opponent interested me and I have NEVER paid more than $20 for a ticket... And most of the time I have had no trouble getting someone to give them to me for free (Navy, Texas Tech, Washington St., TCU)... But, sure enough, these tickets are going for almost $100 on the SMU website and for anywhere between $75 and $150 on other ticket sites and Craigslist... I think SMU could have sold this game out easily just by doubling the prices of the tickets to say $45-$50... What happens when they go into the Big East and they convince a big name to come to Ford...?? They are already going to raise ticket prices to prove they are "Big time"... It's going to be a local marketing disaster if they aren't winning to tell people that they have to pay $100-$150... If you are consistently winning at a high level charge whatever you like... People will either pay or not... But to charge $100 (minimum) a ticket to see SMU play anybody right now much less A&M is ludicrous... -
Here's the problem with our scheduling
McKinneyMiner replied to MeanGreenHoops's topic in Mean Green Football
I was doing some research about FBS v FCS for this thread... I know there are some FBS teams that have scheduled 2 FCS teams in the same season recently but I couldn't figure out which ones they were without literally going through all the schedules... I am pretty sure, though, that it has been done by a MAC team or two... BUT, in the course of this research I did dig up an interesting factoid... Apart from the brand new FBS teams (UMass, Texas St., UTSA, South Alabama, etc.) as of this season only 3 FBS teams have never scheduled an FCS team... Notre Dame USC UCLA I have to admit I am a little surprised by UCLA for some reason... Colorado and Washington have only played once each against FCS... -
Texas A&M at SMU not sold out?
McKinneyMiner replied to Coach Bill Lewis's topic in Mean Green Football
I think this is more of an indictment of the A&M fans than the SMU fans... SMU doesn't draw flies and everyone knows it... But when Texas Tech played there a few years ago it was extremely close to sold out and most of the crowd was wearing black and red... You would think with the huge DFW alumni base they have A&M would have this game sold out... After all, they are SEC now... -
My season seat selection for Apogee Stadium last year was a piece of unexpected genius... I chose section 204 at the very top on the aisle... That accomplished 2 things I wasn't aware of during the buying process: 1) I am always in the shade for games in the sun and always under cover for bad weather games... 2) There is no one directly behind me so I can do whatever I want during a game and there are no complaints... I admit I sit down for a good portion of the game due to poor health, but emotion and excitement cause me to rise to my feet throughout the game... And as one poster earlier put it, we are all there to support the Mean Green... Why complain...??

While the Houston game seems much more winnable now than it did even one week ago, I can't say that I am that optimistic about the K-State game... They are a good team with a dangerous QB and will be VERY tough to beat... However, that's FINE... Say our OOC this year is 1-3... Or, quite possibly, 2-2... Where we are going to make our mark this season is in the Sun Belt... Is 6-2 or 5-3 unreasonable for SBC play...?? Absolutely not... Almost all teams in college football that are "surprises" in a given season play better on the road than expected... THAT is what this team needs to do... Make Apogee a nightmare for visiting teams and play better on the road than people expect... 6-6 or 7-5 are doable... I can't wait for it to play out...

I'll be flying solo with my season ticket this season... My son had a ticket last year but he is committed to others things this season...

This is a bit high in my opinion... In the last five years LSU has played 9 out of conference games against "mid-major" or FCS opponents... 2011: Northwestern St. (FCS) 49-3 Western Kentucky 42-9 2010: McNeese St. 32-10 Louisiana-Monroe 51-0 2009: Louisiana-Lafayette 31-3 Louisiana Tech 24-16 2008: Appalachian St. 41-13 North Texas 41-3 Troy 40-31 So, in the last five years LSU has covered a 43 point difference against lesser non-conference opponents twice... Once in 2011 against FCS Northwestern St. and once in 2010 against Louisiana-Monroe... They didn't even do it in 2008 against us when we were 1-11 and were beaten 77-20 by Rice... Les Miles teams don't run scores up and sometimes play down to their opponent... 43 points, in lieu of recent history, seems high... Having said that, they definitely have the talent to cover that and more...

No team SHOULD go to a bowl game with less than 7 wins... It really bugs me to see teams go to bowls with a 6-6 record, lose and then be a "bowl team" with a losing record... "But, hey, we went to a bowl game!!" 7 should be the bare minimum... If there are too many bowl games for that, then get rid of some...

Necessary Roughness is on Netflix
McKinneyMiner replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
I was a student during the filming... The crews were set up around the Administration Building for a week or so... And that year Fry Street Fair was moved to the area of Avenue D and some of the performers like Sinbad attended the Fair... I worked at O'Riley's Billiards and right next to us they set up a store that was selling all the props, jerseys, etc. from the movie... I have some "Texas State" memorablia somewhere... -
UTSA Season Ticket Sales Well Ahead Of Last Year
McKinneyMiner replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
My final payment for my 2 season tickets will be on the 15th... Can't wait for the season to start... It will start right after I can back from playing in a pool tournament in Las Vegas... I am massively pumped... -
I agree with this, but the best rivalries are ones that happen every year... The results of the previous year can be imediately contested the following year to heighten the drama... There is nothing worse than two conference foes engaging in a classic, hotly contested game one season only to not play each again for 2 or 3 years... There must be a happy medium somewhere... Maybe flexible yearly scheduling to take advantange of budding rivalries...?? Sounds kinda weird, though...

UTSA and Charlotte Looking to join Sun Belt
McKinneyMiner replied to KoldBeer's topic in Mean Green Football
I thought we all agreed long ago that WE are the next Boise St. Charlotte and UTSA will have to settle for being the next UNT... As soon as we become the next Boise St. Clear...?? -
Is Johnny a candidate for the SMU job?
McKinneyMiner replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
No chance... SMU will be looking to hire a name going into the Big East... No slam dunk names come to mind at the moment, but whoever it is it he will have to have some skins and some name recognition... I'm sure they would throw crazy money at Brad Stevens, but he'd never leave Butler for SMU... Shaka Smart of VCU maybe...?? Just the one Final Four, but lots of name... -
Greatest High School Running Back You Ever Saw Play?
McKinneyMiner replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
Back in the early 90's I was a stringer for the El Paso Herald Post and I was assigned to watch a game between my alma mater Coronado High School and Cathedral High School... The best high school running back I have ever seen played that night for Coronado... Toraino Singelton... He was bigger, faster and stronger than anyone on the field by a long shot and he could easily have had 500 yards or more had the coaches been inclined to do that... He got tons of interest from major schools, but unfortunately young Toraino was bad news off the field... He ended up at UTEP (under then runnings backs coach Darrell Dickey) and had back to back 1000 yard seasons... He signed with Tampa Bay but was released after being sentenced to a 12 year prison sentence...
