With All The Talk Of Firings...
McKinneyMiner replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
I wonder what the percentage is of assistant coaches that get retained by an incoming HC is... Without any data at all to back up my assertion, my feelings and impressions tell me that the percentage is VERY low... An incoming coach is going to want to work with people he has worked with in the past and that he is comfortable with... I know some new HC's have kept lesser assistants, but I am not familiar with any that have kept major coordinators... I know that when I was hired as a Senior Network Manager of a start up company I interviewed all of people who had assisted in the initial process, but I ended up pretty much hiring my own staff... I kept one current employee and the rest were reassigned... -
Any good recruiter will constantly be bringing in QB's with every recruiting class... Most may not ever play a single down as a QB, but they are often very successfully turned into other positions because generally a high school QB is the best athlete on a team... You can NEVER recruit too many QB's...

My boss grew up in Ohio as a huge Ohio St. fan... He attended Kent St. (was even on the quad the day of the shootings), but says he never went to a game while a student there and has no idea what conference they currently play in or anything about the program... I SORT of understand that... I grew up in El Paso a huge UTEP fan and it wouldn't have mattered where I went to college, UTEP was already in my blood... But, I can't imagine attending a school and not supporting their teams... It is completely alien to me... In my opinion it is a HUGE part of the college experience... After graduating from UTEP I was accepted for grad school at Mississippi St. and I was all ready to support the Bulldogs every Saturday... I guess what bugged me was seeing the thousands of t-shirt fans that came out of every nook and cranny when UT won their National Championship... These people would strut around with their gear on and you just knew they didn't have clue 1 about the football team or the university... But they sure were quick to point out how crappy UNT or UTEP or anyone else was compared to their "beloved" Longhorns... That kind of thing kind of pisses me off...

Not to my knowledge, but Mike Price has TONS of contacts in football... I have been amazed the last 7 years with how many people he has either gotten to be assistants or speak with the players... Price is another coach that is on the hot seat... His last 4 years have been major disappointments after his first 2 seasons yielding bowl teams... He is incredibly popular in El Paso and is a very good ambassador for the school and program... And yet the fans are getting restless... They are 4-1 this season with all the wins coming against horrible teams (Arkansas Pine-Bluff, New Mexico St, Memphis and New Mexico)... With a home game against Rice this weekend he has a chance to be 5-1 and in a great position for a bowl bid... I like Mike Price a lot, and I hope he does it... If not, I fear there will be a change...

This is also a bit of a pet peeve of mine... So many people at my work wear the UT, OU gear when they went to community college in Colorado or something... They act like it is life or death with their t-shirt school... I wear the gear of 2 schools... UNT - attended from 1986-1992 UTEP - attended 1993-1994 (graduated 1994) I had kind of forgotten about UNT for a few years living in El Paso, but when I returned to the Metroplex I returned to my old haunts and am back in the fold...

Interesting Fact About Corky Nelson...
McKinneyMiner replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Fry was the last coach to do it, but there have been 2 others... Jack Sisco was 74-38-11 from 1929-1941 Odus Mitchell was 122-85-9 from 1946-1966 Interestingly, the only other coach to have even a .500 record was Jerry Moore who was 11-11 from 1979-1980... If he weren't 70 something years old, I would LOVE to have Jerry Moore back... He has done incredible things at Appalachian St. and his teams are ALWAYS ready to play... -
In Unt's Situation, I've Wondered....

In times of confusion it is best to just let the words of El Guapo wash over us... "It's a... SWEATER...!!" -
I was a student when we voted in a Dalmatian and a pregnant squirrel as the King and Queen... Don't mess with tradition...!!

I'm not talking about a curse that dictates wins and losses... I agree with you that poor coaching and preparation has been an albatross around the neck of this team for too long... The curse I speak of is deeper than that... It's a general malaise that hangs over the entire program that allows a team that fights tooth and nail to the last whistle to have a tying extra point blocked after pretty much routinely connecting on all previous attempts this season... A new coaching staff lifts that malaise just by their newness... What we have now is stagnant...

"You saw her! She's a truck driving Magic Mamma. And we've got maybe seconds before Darth Rosenberg grinds everybody into Jawa-burgers, and not one of you bunch has the midiclorians to stop her." 'nuff said...
-
I'd settle for Darth Rosenberg...
-
I would be more inclined to hold it against him had it resulted in points... Since the field goal was blocked it was pretty much a non-event... I was only saying that the interception was not a result of a poorly thrown ball or a misguided decision and really should not be blamed on the QB...
-
His interception bounced off the receiver into the hands of the defender... He gets a pass on that one... Riley played fine last night and was certainly not the problem... But, if we are going to run a dink and dunk offense that hopes for the big running play then our execution needs to be as close to perfect as possible... And the procedure and holding penalties we saw last night aren't going to cut it...
-
In honor of one of our greatest maybe as players are limping off the field they could just toss their jerseys to members of the Junior Mean Green Club... Something like that...??

Where to begin...?? Where to end...?? What should the middle look like...?? I left McKinney yesterday honestly and completely convinced that this team was on a roll and would win this game... That conviction never left me, even after going down 14-0... Can anyone say ANOTHER first drive opponent touchdown? How about a high snap that is batted to a waiting rusher for a touchdown...?? If you're going to kick me in the nuts at least smile... And that is to say nothing of the sloppy undisciplined mess that was the team last night... Penalties, mental mistakes, organizational chaos... And yet, we kept hanging in there... Despite having to play against the Cajuns and ourselves we remained in striking distance... Even after giving up 2 ridiculously long pass plays (I knew we were going to get burned on one of those when that receiver flat out dropped one in the first quarter) we hung tough and fought... I had to leave the game at the start of the fourth quarter because my Frankenstein neck had taken a little too much without the benefit of hydrocodone, but I listened to the rest in the car and I never quit believing that we were going to win... I just sensed it... And then the extra point... A horrible feeling washed over me as I heard George and Hank prepare to make the call... Something told me that we should go against every book in football and just direct snap it to Dunbar and take our chances... A ferret took up residence in my abdomen... Blocked... After all that, blocked... A sly no-look kick to the nuggets to top off the evening... ::Sigh:: I just don't see any way Coach Dodge can remain as coach after this... I'm not at all superstitious, but this thing is cursed... And that's no joke... After the season (and no matter what happens the rest of the way) Coach Dodge needs to be profusely thanked for his service, shown the door, and one representative from every religion, great and small, needs to be given a chance to shake this curse that hangs over the program... Seriously, a new coach will do wonders... There is no way a different coach with the same talent would have these same results... No way... No way... See you guys Saturday...?? I'll be there... Wearing green... Hoping... Except now I will be looking ahead... Cheering for players and waiting for new coaches... And that wonderful new stadium...
-
And the Rays never will put butts in the park UNTIL... they get a new stadium... We already have half the equation... Time to win...
-
I am pumped and ready to go...!! Planning on leaving McKinney around 3:30 and heading to the game... I'll be easy to spot since I am wearing a neck brace due to spine surgery a few weeks ago (this is my first foray into the big world since)... If you happen to be near Section B Row 19 Seat 21 come over and say howdy.... I'll be with my daughter today since my son is doing a Youth Group sleepover at the Ft. Worth Zoo... Go Mean Green...!! Can't wait...

I hate things like this... So sad, and there is nothing to say really... My heart goes out his to family... Football seems so insignificant right now...

The Unt Big Question Series, Game 5
McKinneyMiner replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
In Dennis Dixon's senior year at Oregon they lost their top 3 quarterbacks for the season... After Dixon went down they lost the backup in the next game... Ryan Leaf's brother took over and he was lost in the last game heading into the Sun Bowl... Justin Roper, a redshirt freshman started his first ever collegiate game and lead the Ducks to a 56-21 win over South Florida, throwing 4 touchdown passes... And this prompted possibly the greatest quote in college football history... After the game USF coach Jim Leavitt accused Oregon coach Mike Bellotti of running up the score... Bellotti's response? (priceless) "What did he want me to do, put in the 4th string quarterback? That was the guy I started the game with!" -
The Unt Big Question Series, Game 5

I think he is treating the Army game as a statistical aberration... The high game wouldn't be considered an aberration so it wouldn't need to be thrown out in order to paint the picture of the statistical norm... Not sure I agree with it, but it is one way to spin stats... -
B'cuz Sharing Is Caring

My dream conference for quite some time (and I know it is never going to happen) would be: The New Southwest Conference West - Arizona, Arizona St., New Mexico, New Mexico St., UTEP East - Texas Tech, TCU, SMU, UNT, Baylor I have always thought that would be good geographically and competitively... But it ain't never gonna happen... Bummer...
