If he IS innocent, it's just another example of hardheads not getting the word when Coach gives the lecture about being careful who you hang with. He probably thinks that advice doesn't apply to him. They just a few months ago got him out of another scrape on 6th Street, I believe. If he is Guilty, that's either (a) his stash for a while, ( he was picking up the "supplies" for the team or © it was possession with intent to distribute (gotta have some walkin-around money). I'll not make any judgments...not my place. Let the system work.

Glad to hear you're still "intact", Plumm. Uh...I meant that in a manly sort of way.

Inquire about any promotions they might have going to reduce your cost. I unloaded my high school ring and my undergrad ring on the Josten's rep for a healthy discount on my MBA ring. I was able to get a really nice one because of that. Of course, that was when gold was $32/ounce.

Not much going on in Denton, but the good news is that I just saved a TON of money on my car insurance with GEICO!

Not a Negative post, but I'm concerned...
EagleMBA replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
I'll be back! Thinking about upping my 2 season tickets plus selected games to a flat 4 season tickets this year. Mean Green Club, as usual. Yeah, it's miserable to witness our men being gang-raped but they are still my team, win or lose. Performances must/will get better this year IMHO. -
Plumm, the school song would have been much better if it HAD been "Louie Louie". As it was, we used the Ohio State song, "Through The Fields" I think. Words were CORNY, just like northern Indiana: Fight you Kingsmen all the way, show them Penn High is here. Wave the black and white and gold and give a mighty cheer. Go, big team, we're backing you all, keep their team from getting the ball. Fight, fight right to the end, and a victory there'll be for Penn. Seemed inspiring at the time.

Penn High School, Mishawaka, Indiana - Class of 1963 The Kingsmen. Several state football championships (but not when I played). Called "The University of Penn" by the locals and has an academic reputation to go with its stout athletics. Many alumni have found their way down the road about ten miles west to Notre Dame. I have personally never regretted coming to Texas to go to college so don't bitch at me...got here as quick as I could!

DMN article on SMU firing BB Coach Tubbs
EagleMBA replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Blakistone always finds a way to imply racial bias; for that reason, I rarely read his spewings. On this occasion I did, because I was interested in the Tubbs situation. Tubbs is a decent coach and I agree that if it's about a cup of laundry detergent or a few Big Macs, the man should have gotten a pass. If there were indeed improprieties (even a 3 or 4 on the Bliss scale) then the man must go. BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE A DAMNED THING TO DO WITH THE PIGMENTATION OF THE MAN'S SKIN!! I resent Blakistone fanning those flames at every opportunity. -
If all he did was what has appeared in print, that's pretty chicken$hit. The NCAA gestapo needs to get a grip on reasonableness. Either there is a raging fire where this little puff of smoke is coming from, or the new AD has pressured the old AD to be the hatchet-man because he doesn't want any unpleasantness when he takes office. By the time this crap gets sprayed all over in the newspaper, you can bet that the nut-cuttin' is already done and they're just posturing the spin on it at this point.

Designers selecting mascot for Dallas campus
EagleMBA replied to NTEagle08's topic in Mean Green Football
The appropriate mascot for UNT-Dallas would be The Urban Blights, or perhaps The Ragin' Crackheads. -
MeanGreenHoops, there is no law (written or unwritten) that says you have to say you like JJ if you don't. If you think he's a jerk and unfit to coach our team, just say so. I say he's top-shelf in all matters concerning character, integrity and those things that define a "good man"; he's the kind of man you would want to coach your son in that regard. Then there's the harsh reality of results, progress and expectations for the basketball program. I believe he is a knowledgable coach but somehow his guys don't seem to get it done. I read that he has recruited some talent that should take us to a better record next year. Since I DO support JJ, I would hope that he gets another season to put them on the floor and see if he can get them to achieve more than this year's team did. If they turn out to be another mediocre one-and-done, then (with a heavy heart) I would have to say that JJ is done too.

DMN Men have quick exit in Sun Belt tournament
EagleMBA replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Not to be an apologist for JJ, but he can't go on the floor and make the last minute plays, nor can he make them "hungry" if they're not. Having said that, it is his responsibility to recruit playmakers and put a boot in their asses if they appear not to be "hungry". I make no secret of being a JJ supporter, but this is damned disappointing. -
In business you would call a guy who makes moves like that a whore! Have a feeling this was based more on a personal relationship than money; nevertheless, when a man gives his word, he should honor it. I guess there is always the chance that Arizona State renieged on some aspect of their deal to Malone and he bolted.
-
That whole process seems quite risky to me ... from BOTH sides. Have there been lots of instances in which an early commitment has come back to bite one party or the other in the ass? How does a junior know what his competition for playing time is going to look like that far ahead of time? How does a coach know that the kid didn't play the season of his life as a junior and it's downhill from here? The whole thing is suspect IMHO.

How many on the board played football and at
EagleMBA replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
I played guard and linebacker in Indiana, grades 9-12. We ran that old Green Bay offense where I pulled and took on whomever was in my running back's way on the corner. It was fun but at 170 lbs I was not going to play at the next level. Besides, I was not that great...bounced back and forth between 1st and 2nd string. I DO LOVE THE GAME! -
I have to agree with eaglehoney about the talent. Those men named were a delight to watch represent us. I didn't mean to imply that JJ hasn't had time to recruit "his" players; what I was saying is that a new coach will want time to recruit "HIS" players. The implication was that this would drag out the timeline for a return to respectability for the program. Now if you think that JJ will not be able to recruit the kind of players needed for UNT to be competitive, and that he has arguably had enough time to do so if he is going to, then you are ready to pull the plug. Obviously, some on this board are already to that point.
-
Didn't mean to stir up a hornets' nest, guys. Obviously, there is some strong sentiment on here for going in a new coaching direction. I think JJ runs a good program and is trying to get the right mix in here to get the results he and we want. Building a program can be like turning an oil tanker unless you have the available scholarships and can recruit a couple of real studs early in the process. We can debate how far you think this tanker has turned, but I would throw out something in the 30 to 40 degree range so far. Starting over means a new coach who wants time to find "his" players and develop them ... might take another five years of running in place. JJ should get another year; the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know. And while I'm throwing out the cliches, here's another (but true) one ... my father taught me to measure twice before cutting.
-
Well, maybe it's time to talk about who might do a better job AND be available to us for what we can pay. It looks like Quin Snyder will be available soon, according to him in an article today in the DMN. Should we call him? Would he run a better program than JJ?
-
I'm glad you're feeling better, Coach. May you have a speedy and full recovery.
-
Time to adjourn the pity party. JJ at least has them competitive, although we have been on the short end of too many one-possession losses. In prior years he had to deal with more than his share of physical problems and this year it looks like discipline. Rat ball is not fun to watch for someone who likes to see a more structured offense. Nonetheless, I have seen a parade of coaches over the years and I think JJ runs the best overall program. I voiced my fears about pressure on JJ in a post months ago, and it looks like it is developing due to the lack of significant improvement (on paper) this season. What a shame. Give the man one more season, "make-or-break". If the ball doesn't bounce the other way, well, he has been given every opportunity.

They are both worthy organizations, but you will do more for athletics if you join the Mean Green Club. I am a member of BOTH and I think many posters here are also. There must be a sweetheart deal for a new grad that would get you into both comfortably.

Mary and I saw their concert at the AAC a couple of months ago. Mick prances and skips around the stage for almost two hours. Yeah, they look like a remake of Night of the Living Dead, but they can still rock the house. I have seen MANY concerts in my life and that one was the best-produced I have ever seen. We enjoyed the halftime show too!

Untbowler cited my greatest fear. Spencer is a great punter, and no doubt he would probably do an adequate job with the rest of the kicking duties. What do we do when he gets injured? This is an unacceptable risk. Get a backup enrolled in Denton YESTERDAY!
