EXCELLENT, insightful piece. Thanks, Deep, I hope others take the time to click on the link. -
Brelan Chancellor signs with Ottowa Redblacks
EagleMBA replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I think he probably got caught up in one or more of the NFL's size stereotypes (too short, too slow, too light, etc.) that they seem to apply blindly to players, totally disregarding the intangibles. We know Brelan is a player and Ottawa will find that out if they give him a fair look. -
R.I.P. B.B. King
EagleMBA replied to FirefightnRick's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I was fortunate enough to see him perform five times. The last time was on a bill that included Etta James and Al Green. The most memorable was the Crossroads Festival in Dallas in the Cotton Bowl about 2004. Part of the show was a jam with B.B., Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughn and maybe John Mayer. You can probably still get it on DVD. His vocal performances in the last few years were not the best but he could still make Lucille sing beautifully. What a great performer he was and a real gentleman. He will be missed but not forgotten. At least one of his CDs is always in my rotation in the car. He's right in there with Etta James, Joe Cocker (all deceased), Buddy Guy, and Susan Tedeschi. Rest in peace, B.B. -
Texas Rising
EagleMBA replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Agree that it should not be required watching for Texas History or taken as geographically accurate. Nonetheless, I DVRd the series and have been watching it for entertainment after a couple of Shiners. The gratuitous blood and gore, along with the escapades of lovely "Emily West", are the hooks. If Emily was around today to produce the series she would have called it "Santa Ana's Last Stand". -
I can vouch for the train. I did it the last time we played there and it was very easy. It is less than a two-block walk to the stadium. Depending on where you live, consider driving to somewhere along North Central Expwy, like the Arapaho Station where there is lots of safe, well-lighted parking for your family, and ride it down to Mockingbird. Trust me, the auto traffic around SMU is a real cluster ...

I read some of the debate published on the Texas legislature's site. They cited statistics that showed that out of 880,000 Texans currently licensed to carry concealed, approximately 20,000 are between the ages of 21 - 25. It was noted in debate that people in that number who attend college are likely carrying concealed on campus anyway to some degree and no one is the wiser. The legislation will likely not trigger a rush of unlicensed people who want to pay for training, fingerprinting, criminal and medical background checks. One quote was "Much ado about nothing."

We all love our Mean Green but I guess we have some differences...my Fighting Irish don't seem to be getting much love. -

A very thoughtful and realistic post. I agree that the system has flaws that will be exploited by those who can get away with it. IMO, we can diligently keep the window of opportunity for those characters as small as possible without infringing on the God-given rights of the overwhelming majority of responsible, law-abiding people. By coincidence, I came upon the following quote while reading my email this morning, contained in an advertisement of all places. It looks like it was taken out of context and makes me want to research the whole speech. This quote pretty much sums up my thinking FWIW: "A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined..." - George Washington, January 8, 1790, in the first annual address to both houses of Congress. I think we enjoyed our college years in an environment that was pretty much sheltered. Times have changed, society is much more violent than I remember, and the campus is preyed upon more and more by external elements that invade its boundaries.

I am not a big proponent of open carry because I prefer the strategic advantage of concealed carry. Those who wish to frighten the sheep may do so. I am also not a proponent of no background checks. I want people who lawfully carry to be fingerprinted and have criminal and medical background checks. I am glad that the proposed provision in the HB 910 legislation that would have restricted law enforcement's right to question and ID openly armed individuals without probable cause did not pass. As one who is closely acquainted with a law enforcement officer, I did not want to see his job made more difficult and hazardous. Just remember that, IMO, anyone who wants to do harm with a handgun and can scrape up a few bucks to buy one on the street WILL. No amount of legislation or regulation will ever change that. How is it working out for dope? Exercise your rights and take responsibility for your own safety because there are not enough police.

The only other team I root for is Notre Dame. Those ties go way back, as I was born and raised just two or three miles from ND Stadium. I won't tell you how long ago that was but I remember when "Touchdown Jesus" was constructed and the player I most remember seeing was Paul Hornung; he was a QB in college. My uncle was an usher and occasionally slipped his nephew a ticket (still have stubs). My least favorite list is pretty short. I take a good, healthy SMU every morning. -
No need for a "Chicken Little" response to this legislation. First, the licensed handgun carrier must be 21 years of age; there will not be kiddies running around campus playing cops and robbers. Second, the multiple anal probes you must endure to pass the background check pretty much ensures that the licensee is at least in the upper quartile (my SWAG) of responsible, stable people; look at the history of licensee behavior. I would venture a guess that there may even be employees of the University who would not pass the background check. I did not hear a loud cry for this legislation, but since it passed I am personally comfortable with it. No offense intended to any who may have different opinions. I take responsibility for myself and in today's society that unfortunately includes personal safety.

Baylor Stadium wants you to come inside her

Who is the stadium management person at Baylor one would need to contact in order to bid on the Kleenex concession? -

When asked later, she will swear she only did it once. -
It was good to get the call, even though recorded. I predict that even Mac's voice would not have held up for all the required calls. I have been in the dumps since I lost Eaglette on December 6. She was my constant companion for the last eight years and a big Mean Green fan. She was a veteran of two "Football 101" classes and is with me on our bricks at the Alumni Center. Coach Mac's call is just what I needed to get my butt out of the house and to Apogee on Saturday.

His performance was amazing and I did appreciate it. I do worry that we might get complacent and leave too many points on the field in a game that might end up biting us in the ass. It is comforting to know that he is there for us on 4th and 6 at the 30.

OK? Well then, how about "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan!".

THE HAWK ! The winds here can be tough sometimes during our six weeks of winter. When you feel that bite from the north here, just imagine what two or three times that wind chill is. Not six weeks of potential events like that either...try three or four months. God, I'm glad to be in Texas. -

I remember that day as if it was yesterday, Plumm. Things like where I was, what I did, people I spoke with and what I saw on television are extremely vivid. To clarify my statement, I was not in Dallas on that fateful day, however, I was in Edinburg. When I said "here" I meant the great State of Texas. -

Plumm, what a great family tree and history. You must be/should be proud of that Texas heritage. My roots go back that long or longer to Indiana farmers and blacksmiths. The big difference is I was the first one to have sense enough to get out of there after high school! Very glad to be here since 1963. -

Plumm, I was born and raised 90 miles east of there. The phrase I heard most often while growing up was "It's colder than a well-digger's ass!". I got to Texas as quick as I could. GMG!
