Darrell Dickey name interim head coach at Memphis
EagleMBA replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
After seeing film and studying tendencies, Memphis' next opponent will be caught flatfooted by a draw on third and 9! It will make me nostalgic for cries of "Throw the f'n ball, Dickey!". -
I have a hidden camera on the wall in their HQ and I picked this up:
-
This, Spring Ball and Fall Camp should cure him or kill him. At least we'll know he had the proper opportunity to show he can or can't play. I want him to succeed because he has the raw material to do it and because this will buy the new coach some time to find and develop the backup.

How should the new coach handle the QB position?
EagleMBA replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
Make it clear to all players, but especially quarterbacks (since that is the current topic), that everyone starts from square one with a clean slate. "All players will be evaluated by me and my staff based on what they show me in practice. Based on the numbers I've seen from last year, you all need a LOT of practice. There will be competition; any players that don't feel they need to compete should see me after this meeting." -
I would think that Patterson won't allow his staff to be gutted. Meacham would surely need to tap his network of contacts elsewhere.

At least a couple of their fans get it. Here is a post from the killerfrogs board. I guess they still remember the Hattiesburg Hustler. Guy #1:"With all the head coaching positions out there and more dominos to fall, UNT is smart to hire someone ASAP. However, a candidate like Meach has no reason to jump at the first offer from a tired program with little fan or donor support. The only positive to the job is that its in Texas, where he can recruit and his family can stay somewhat put. For example, what if the Houston gig came open? Yeah, Houston isn't Denton but its a much higher upside job with higher pay. There are going to be a lot better opportunities than UNT. That's just one step up from Texas State." Guy #2:"Maybe, but I like San Marcos a hell lot better than Denton. Larry is a good guy and much better AD than the train wreck that is Villareal."

My gut says DD and Fuente have a deal. DD, coach us through the bowl season while I go on ahead, survey the landscape and clear out the MFers at VT and start planning. After the season, I'll send for you. -

Interview questions that should be asked
EagleMBA replied to SilverEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
If your father had a brother John, and if he came to visit you on horseback, would you help Uncle Jack off the horse? -
Have you been to Toledo? Ames will seem like paradise. Good step up for him but a gamble on his career...make or break, all in. I have to admire his guts. Besides that, he probably has a good handle on the recruiting territory and contacts. I will be watching this one to see how it works out.

I also noted in that link that Matt Campbell is taking the Iowa State job. That leaves Fritz on the table!

My memory is foggy this morning; can't remember Helwig's last year. Was he just before RV, who plopped on the scene 4/4/2001? Here are the average attendance figures and number of home games if you youngsters can develop it further: SEASON # Hm Games Avg Attend AD SEASON # Hm Games Avg Attend AD 2015 5 13,631 est RV 2003 5 18,694 RV 2014 6 19,271 RV 2002 5 15,260 RV 2013 6 21,030 RV 2001 5 14,769 RV 2012 5 18,927 RV 2000 5 14,180 ? 2011 6 18,864 RV 1999 4 13,752 ? 2010 6 17,718 RV 1998 5 12,480 ? 2009 6 18,228 RV 1997 4 19,704 ? 2008 5 16,956 RV 1996 6 14,234 ? 2007 5 17,734 RV 1995 4 17,376 ? 2006 5 15,685 RV 1994 4 19,517 ? 2005 5 16,446 RV 1993 6 8,596 ? 2004 5 15,184 RV 1992 5 6,946 ? Twenty four years! Looks to me like Ray could have been in charge and there wouldn't have been much difference.

If that is a good number, then the last time the average was that bad was 1998 (also a 5 home game season). See the first quote above. RV has been here since 4/4/2001. The attendance situation today is way worse than when he got here. The average was 14,769 for his first football season.

Couldn't happen to nicer guys.

OK, I'll rise to the bait. Game conditions will be better than expected but still sloppy and treacherous. There will be some turnovers for sure but no way to predict where on the field they will occur. Having said all that: UNT 20 UTEP 17

I have a prostate exam early next week with the doc I lovingly call "Fatfinger" and you know what that means. Coincidence? I think not!!

Well said. I think whomever the hire is, he will get a "honeymoon" period to sell us on his program. A lot will depend on his compensation package and other aspects of his contract, IMO. If the comp is perceived as being out of proportion to his resume, the "honeymoon" may not last as long as some would like. I want to see progress and competitive play and I don't expect it all at once. If he's getting top dollar, I want to see progress faster and will be looking closer for indicators.

MGB late night hoops rewind with Harris update
EagleMBA replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Beginning to look like there is some testicular cancer in this administration. -
That's what coaches do. If Benford fancies himself as a coach, it is time to put up or go away. To use a cliche, "There ain't no I in TEAM". Whatever Harris is looking for, I hope he finds it. Now don't let the door hit 'ya where the Good Lord split 'ya!

I remember Applewhite when he played and appreciated that. I must confess my prejudice concerning him, however; he is a Whorn. Ask the average football fan to identify Major Applewhite and you are likely to get "University of Texas". There are already two "Teasip Lites" in our conference. I don't know that I could ever think of him as anything but a Longhorn and the media would be throwing that up in every interview and story. JMO.
