  1. Bank just needs to send the defaulting borrowers a 1099 as it can now be considered income. Used that concept many times during my banking career with folks threatening default. Did it a few times as well when we decided it wasn't worth pursuing the balance through the courts. Fun watching the reaction when the folks discovered that now they would be dealing with the IRS! Sure, the tax was not as big as the balance due, but did give some pause. Also fun to tell some we would let them keep the house (mostly with folks who got into that "rental properties will make you a millionaire" scam) and just send the IRS a 1099 for the $100,000 plus balance or whatever it was. Or, that they could keep the car, we would just send the 1099 in at year end for them! Co-signers who thought we had to repo the car and sell it were often very surprised. Just FYI....never ever co-sign a loan for someone who is not your kid or parent...period! Even if a kid or parent, be 100% prepared to be the one paying it. Once the the school is on the hook for a portion of defaulted federal and/or state student loans there will be far less debt, far fewer defaults and far less taxpayer liability. The next financial crisis may well be seen in student loan debt. Way past time to re-think this whole concept...especially for the "for profit" diploma mills...just how many massage therapists do we need...or medical office coders, etc.?
  2. Why does anyone care what SMU thinks? Why does anyone care about SMU?
  3. We did a successful GMG.Com softball game a couple of years ago. I said I would do the first one WITH help, but needed to turn it over to someone else after the first one. You will note there has not been one since the first. These things are MUCH more work and include much more upfront expense than most people realize. It is not just 20-30 players and ballads and bats to do it right and have a chance of raising any level of funds at all. Just raising $2-300 is hardly worth the effort. Easier to just write a check if that's all you are looking to do....but, it was a great day and a fun game. I am up for another and would relent and help do it...but, would need serious and dedicated help. Without a couple of folks actually willing to work, I am just not going to move this forward. If folks are interested and are willing to work and take on certain rolls...PM me and we'll see where we can go with softball game II.
  4. Don't really know what I think about this stuff other than it is pure stupidity! Part of me says that this idiot should immediately be gone! Another part says jerk his scholly and see how he handles that and if he wants to "earn it back". Another says lay down the law, give him some "make up" work and let it be a lesson learned with the kid kept on a very short leash. i have to wonder if this is a "first time" for this kid. Like a lot of star athletes these days he has probably had a few "incidents" overlooked during his HS years. So, he feels entitled....who knows, but this shows a big character flaw, a lack of personal respect and a big lack of respect for team, teammates and UNT in general. i don't care how common on other campuses this might be...this is UNT and stuff like this is not appropriate! I am sure Coach Mac will handle this, but I am really torn on whether I think this kid should remain a part of the Mean Green. If he has no respect for himself or school or team at this point....what might the future hold?
  5. Some people should just stay away from threads where they have no clue what they are talking about. And probably don't know the difference between the Champions League and MLS.
  6. And me...just saying. Why is this concept so hard?
  7. Going with the wife and other friends....holding the $100.00 bet funds between Dallas Green and Mean Green Texan...enjoying pre-game tailgating and most of all....enjoying yet another Mean Green win over the Ponies! That's all!
  8. Who cares what SMU does or does not do? Just play us and it's all good. I have no problem with SMU being Dallas' school. They pretty much are made for each other. I hope SMU does well as they are local...just not against UNT. We will see the SMU folks in Dallas this fall. And, we will enjoy another win against the Ponies when the day is done. no need to bash the ponies. They do enough of that themselves.
  9. Sorry to see the Australians...or at least some of them...display such a lack of sportsmanship after getting beat by a better side yesterday in their World Cup opener. If Australia were a better side with a better game plan, they should have won. They did not and instead if showing the class they could have and congratulated the U. S. on the win and moved on to their next game, they stoop to calling out the Americans. Sad. The fitness of the Australians was suspect after about 60 minutes in. They ran out of gas just as the Americans were getting their first game jitters out of the way. So, how many World Cups has Australia won? How many victories against the U.S.? i hope the Aussies do well from here on out. I also hope they keep their sour traps crap-ola to themselves.
  10. Ok...thought this needed its own thread. Nice start for the U.S. Women with a 3-1 win over a fiesty Australian side. Also interesting to see games being played on turf. USA! USA!
  11. So, I guess we like Aledo now.
  12. Totally agree!
  13. Be careful here folks. GMG.Com is a fan board and thus could be considered "booster" influence. This stuff can get interesting fast. So, I really think this one should be handled very carefully. Might want to just let those better qualified wishing the athletic dept. handle this one. Just sayin.....
  14. Why? edit: well, interesting. It was an honest question as I cannot why anyone would be stunned by this news knowing what we all feel was the relationship between DJ and Coach Mac. It was apparent to all but the blind that DJ was and is not a Mac guy. For whatever reason, DJ never got over the hump in being a Mac guy. Coach Mac runs a certain type of program and it is pretty much going to be Mac's way or the highway. Pretty much like lots of D1 HC's who take this stuff very seriously. Bring in a gifted athlete who does not fit your mold and it pretty much becomes an oil and water thing. They just don't mix. Happens. Too bad, but it does. If you did not see this coming after last season, the suspension, the demotion to third team after spring ball, etc., etc. you just might have not been paying very close attention. I don't know anyone who wasn't hoping thatvDajon would turn out to the the number one guy at UNT for several years. But, it simply did not work out and it was pretty obvious that it wasn't going to work out for Dajon at UNT. So...thus, being a pretty obvious outcome to me, the question of "why stunned". I just wanted to know what I missed in being in no way stunned by this move. That's all...pretty honest and simple question.
  15. As mentioned earlier...facilities overall is the major hang up. Still do not see a return for football at UAB any sooner than one for UTA.
  16. Walt Garrison of the Okie State and Dallas Cowboys fame....sorry. Thought my comments gave it away. My bad!
  17. Interesting....definitely appears to be an Air Force uniform....wore one for a few years. Looks pretty familiar.
  18. Appreciate the thought.
  19. A few football quotes for the off-season lull: but first a disclaimer...there were sent to me by a friend. If any are misquoted...blame him...I am not taking the time to verify every one of these! :-) "I make my practices real hard because if a player is a quitter, I want him to quit in practice, not in a game." Bear Bryant-Alabama "At Georgia Southern we don't cheat. That costs money and we don't have any." Eric Russell/GA Southern "The man who complains about the way the ball bounces is likely to be the one who dropped it." Lou Holtz-Notre Dame & Arkansas "When you win nothing hurts" Joe Namath-Alabama "Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble the football" John Heisman "A school without football is in danger of deteriorating into a medieval study hall." Frank Leahy -Notre Dame "I don't expect to win enough games to be put on probation. I just want to win enough to warrant an investigation." Bob Devaney - Nebraska "in Alabama, an atheist is someone who doesn't believe in Bear Bryant." Wally Butts - Georgia "Always remember Goliath was a 40 point favorite over David." Shug Jordan - Auburn My favorite..... "I asked Darrell Royal, the coach of the Texas Linghorns, why he didn't recruit me. He said, Well, Walt, we took a look at you, and you weren't any good." .... Ha! Oklahoma State and the Dallas Cowboys beg to differ! "Son, you've got a good engine, but your hands are not on the steering wheel." Bobby Bowden -Florida State " If lessons are learned in defeat, our team is getting a great education." Murray Warmath -Minnesota "The only qualifications for a lineman are to be big and dumb. To be a back, you just have to be dumb." Knute Rockne - Notre Dame "We didn't tackle well today, but we made up for it by not blocking." John McKay - USC OK....a little off season football humor...enjoy and Go Mean Green!
  20. Coach Kee only attended the Gainesville stop.
  21. Agree with you. Better, for sure. But, still room for improvement. Social media seems to bevthecway that young people communicate these days. Got to communicate through media these kids respond to as often as we can.
  22. No...sorry, nothing that I recall about the upcoming season's schedule.
  23. So, we come to the end of the Caravan with tonight's stop in Denton. It was, by my estimate, the best creeped for the series...even beat Plano this year. I am estimations a little over 100 "all in" for Denton. Decent food...a bit of Asian influence with chips and salsa. So can we say eclectic? Attendees were provided two drink tickets per person, so attendees could pretty much sip on whatever they wabpnted during the evening...of course one could purchase additional "adult beverages" should they wish. on a side note...the Dillman family was in town and in attendance from Sweden visiting their son. Nice to see them. For me one of the the highlights of the evening was when RV talked about baseball for UNT and pretty much indicated that we may....MAY...be hearing some positive news on that front soon. Baseball is coming to UNT folks...book it! but, the very best was when we got to hear from a couple of our great student-athletes. Speaking to us tonight, and entertaining us as well, were Bianca Bosca, the "Crazy Romanian" from swimming and diving and Carnae Dillard, Conference USA Player of the Year, from volleyball. As I mentioned to several in attendance, if you ever want to know why I do what I do in support of the Mean Green, all you have to do is hear a few of our great student-athletes speak. What wonderful representatives for UNT and oh so ever grateful for the opportunity to represent UNT. These young people are really fantastic! So, proud to help support these students through the Mean Green Club! Interesting how each discussed the importance of support both financially and with attendance. Tonight we heard from coaches representing, swimming and diving, men's golf, volleyball, women's basketball, men's basketball and football. Also, of course, RV discussed the recent $1,000,000 donation to athletics that will help with this summer's upgrades to the soccer complex, the softball complex, the volleyball complex and the Academic Center. one of the drawing winners tonight ended up winning dinner with Coach Mac and his wife prior to the season. Pretty nice drawing gift...when the winner approached to pick up the certificate for the dinner, Coach Mac said "dinner for four at McDondald's"....joking, of course, but a decent comedic line. OK, some of the others who attended to night...how about filling in some details. All in all, much better attendance than last year at every stop except Dallas. Fun times with some great members of the Mean Green Nation.
  24. OK, so as I mentioned earlier I went by the shop to check out the socks, buy a few pair and get them to folks here who wanted them. Well, and to post a photo as well. I guess green joe is a bit "inventory challenged" as I was told by greenjoe's son who runs the shop that they were out except for the 3-5 pair of small sized socks hanging on the rack. Now way I could even get my toes in those smalls. He even went to the storeroom area and spent a good bit of time checking for more socks. So, I guess they sold better than greenjoe's thought. Sorry guys...unless you have very small feet and get there quick we are all out of luck on the UNT sock thing.
