  1. Yep. If you care more about the UT-OU game than attending homecoming at UNT then, you really are a causal "if I have nothing better to do UNT fan". Which, in itself, is plenty OK. We need all "casual fans" we can get whenever they care to attend. No need trying to cover it up with some rationalization of who UNT is playing. It is homecoming and a win is usually nice to have on homecoming days. Seems lots of teams schedule what they think are winnable games for homecoming. But, what a hoot I it is trying to justify non-attendance based on the opponent and/or the fact that it is the same day as the UT-OU game. I don't care where one's loyalties lie, just be honest about it and stop trying to justify it one way or the other. Come don't come...personal decision. No need to fabricate some random justification. Great, the folks you bring will make up for the massive number we will lose because of the TU-OU game or the fact that we are playing Portland State. Thank you for helping to fill those slots.
  2. Are you kidding me? Unless there are some facts to this we are unaware of taking place, which probably there are, that is one A-Hole of a Denton Cop. Do our police in Denton have nothing more to do than arrest people for walking in the street? Seriously? A warning and a "get on the sidewalk" wouldn't do? I am wondering if the charge is just a "favor" that is reduced from a potentially more serious offense? Perhaps the Cop was actually doing the kid a favor at the end of it all. I do recall a nice Cop in Charleston, SC taking pity on my then sea touring Merchant Marine Academy son with his ship in Charleston harbor, and citing him for a far lessor offense after a "Mariner" drinking party in town one night. Does happen. So, let's give both parties here the benefit of the doubt and hope..."lessons learned".
  3. Who here isn't attending simply because the opponent is Portland State? I keep hearing folks here say stuff like this, but find it nutty that anyone who calls them self a Mean Green fan would stay away from a homecoming game based on the opponent. Would any real fan do such a thing? Really? Boggles my mind that that thought would even cross a fan's mind much less that someone would actually stay away. That's something a "t-shirt fan" might do in my opinion. But not a true fan.
  4. SilverEagle has a valid point, but there can be any number of reasons including coming directly from work. For me, I am just happy to see as many folks show up as do. All to often today we see folks on this site and another unnamed one proudly proclaiming that they no longer support the Mean Green for whatever reason they can come up with that makes them feel good. Yes, best to wear green, but just show up...heck, show up in your boxers if you want, just show up. See you there.
  5. Of all the folks on GMG.Com I thought you of the "we need traditions" thing would know exactly everything about Ulys Knight. And not who "is" but who "was" Ulys Knight? Guy was nicknamed "Mr. North Texas" for his tireless efforts to promote the university. Pretty much gets credit for starting the first Alumni Association at what is now UNT and on and on. Oh, a video has already been recorded. I just hope my son doesn't roast me too badly as he accepts in my absence.
  6. Andy...you make the Mean Green Nation proud. Anyone need a reason to step up and join the Mean Green Club? Just check out this great representative of Your University!
  7. I have absolutely no idea what the personal family issues are, but whatever they are, I hope he is able to get them handled in a way that results in a positive outcome. I really enjoyed watching him play and seeing him at the Coach Benford Radio Show and just around campus and Denton. Seemed like a great guy to me the few times I interacted with him. I will miss him not being on the court next season, but, as reported, he did graduate. That says something, and perhaps he felt it best to step away from school for those reported "family reasons". If he gets the issues handled and ends up playing elsewhere, good for him. Congrats on your degree, young man, and God speed in the years ahead. You are always welcome back home at UNT and will always be a part of the great Mean Green Nation!
  8. Awe shucks folks....you are making me blush! Thanks so much for the kind words. I appreciate them much more than any of you could ever know. So much more fun to be had in the coming years doing what I can in support of UNT and the Mean Green. I would only add....get involved...participate...enjoy the University and all it has to offer....don't get bogged down in the little things that, in the whole scheme of things do not matter, don't let individuals or little annoyances get in your way of seeing the much bigger picture of how much it means to our current, former and future students and athletes that you support YOUR University. You will get so much more out of it than you give. That I can promise you! thanks again...for all the kind words.
  9. FANTASTIC! Finally the pride is really beginning to show up in visible ways. Lots to be proud of with this Mean Green Nation these days! Appreciate so much what you guys are doing to help show the way!
  10. I have no clue how my answer is framed in an oldguystuent quote box....using this new GMG version with an iPad is still an adventure to say the least. The reply is for Rudy....after his "Seriously?" Question. Just adding additional info for him.
  11. Great promo for our students at a very reasonable cost. Great to see the athletic folks tapping into a great current spirited fan base source while at the same time building future season ticket holders. here's hoping the busses are full and that they have to schedule more!
  12. Thanks so much. I wasn't aware that the word was out as yet. I am truly honored and humbled by both the nomination from that great Mean Greener drex and, of course, by the selection by a committee comprised of representatives from across the University. It is indeed a special thing for me to be so honored. The irony is that I will be away the day of the Alumni Awards ceremony event, and will not be available to receive the award in person. That's "good news", of course, for those who would have had to listen to my acceptance speech. Instead, my son, will fly in from Virginia to accept on my behalf. Hopefully, he will look great in his Navy dress blues. I couldn't talk him in to wearing a Mean Green cap with that uniform just for the event. What I do for UNT I do out of my love for the greatness that is UNT and for our current, former and future students. I get way way more out of all my volunteer efforts than I give, so in a way it is sort of a selfish effort, but it is indeed a most enjoyable one. UNT is much more to me than any department or any person or program. It IS UNT. We celebrate 125 years of greatness this year in fact. I wish I could be around to celebrate the next 125 years.
  13. Here is a perfect example of the attitude that reeks of entitlement when it comes to this Union crap and the COA argument...in the Thursday, 8/18 edition of The Virginian-Pilot newspaper, an opinion piece from the AP's Tim Dahlberg entitled "Athletes Are Winners Even On The Day They Lost" regarding the NLRB's vote (which, contrary to Rudy's thoughts on the matter, is final with neither side being granted the right of appeal) on unionization ends with the comment, "They, along with O'Bannon, shook up a cozy universe where the players who provide the entertainment got nothing while everyone around them split millions." PURE UNADULTRATED BS! The idea that college players get "nothing" reeks of entitlement mentality. A college education is nothing these days? Graduating with zero debt is "nothing"? And, how much of the money the university brings in goes back to training rooms, facilities, travel amenities, players medical treatment, player academic support, improved equipment, etc., etc. Now, even I can agree that coaching salaries at the big time programs are pretty much out of hand, but those funds come from private sources not state or taxpayer dollars. But, if any of our "entitled" working folks these days were required to put in the hours and be away from family as much as these big time program coaches are the high level of whine could probably be heard from coast to coast. I will state again...if it is such a bad deal....don't play! No one is forcing anyone to play. And, for the umpteenth time...how about getting the NFL to pony up these COA dollars as the NCAA is providing a free minor league system. Why has this concept not been approached by the NCAA? This "entitled" attitude permeating today's sports and work environment is just pure crap-ola. No one "owes" anyone just because they suck air. Every parent and every player knew the deal going in....those poor Northwestern players initiating this Union crap were getting a pretty pricy education handed to them. Poor poor mistreated serfs that they were. Poor babies....whine on!
  14. Waze will also tell you where the police are waiting to pull you over to fill the revenue coffers. Just saying..... well, it will if others on the road ahead of you enter the data. I have used Waze on some long distance road trips, but rarely around town. It proved most helpful getting me around several traffic delays, warning me of police waiting in hard to see places ( not that I was speeding mind you...no, I really wasn't officer ), and about stalked cars and other vehicles on the side of the road. Anyway, if you have never tried it...do, you might like it. And, be sure to help your fellow travelers out by noting where the "revenuers" are waiting in anticipation of enriching city coffers.
  15. Well, for once common sense and reality prevailed. Really happy to see this ruling by the NLRB today. Article I read said that neither side had a right of appeal.
  16. Thanks to Silver Eagle I have one of those super cool Flying Worm Christmas ornaments. I can assure you it will adorn our Christmas this year and for many years to come. It will look great amongst our several other UNT and A,muni Association ornaments.
  17. The sky is falling...a comment by UNT90 that I agree 100% with! Wow! I am so tired of folks completely overlooking the good deeds many of our wealthiest citizens do for their communities. Many do so very quietly and without the fanfare that many others seem to crave. And, this notion that America is not compassionate is pure BS. It IS happening...because this IS America!
  18. Really? You think GMG.Com represents the "fan base"? Heck, about 2/3 of the fan base have never heard go GMG.Com I would hazard to guess. GMG.Com represents a certain segment of the fan base, no way the majority of the fan base. Depending upon, of course, how you define what is...is. Not disputing your thoughts regarding Andy Mac, but I do think Coach Mac has much to much on his plate to care one iota about shoving anyone down anyone's throat. Mac wants to win...period. He will start the players he thinks gives the team the best chance of winning. Fans, of course, have their own opinions. Often, quite different than the HC for any number of reasons and not always talent related. I know it is not a popular opinion here, but I am guessing the majority of the fanbase are willing to go with whoever Coach Mac trots out on the field. i assume most here recall all the crap-ola spewed here regarding the QB situation the year Mr. Thompson was heading into his senior year...how did that end up? Nine wins including a New Year's Day Bowl victory. Was Mac shoving DT down folks throats then? If so...I hope he keeps shoving. We will all see soon enough how it works out.
  19. If I recall correctly...LSU's "Chinese Bandits" we're not the starting defensive units, but rather the third team...given that name due to their spirited play in practice and in games when rotated in by Coach Paul Dietzel. I believe the name originated in the late 1950's. It was actually an honor to play on that unit. The third team LSU defense at that time had plenty of players that would probably start for other teams. Had something to do with rules at the time not allowing for two platoon football at the time it originated. The "Chinese Bandits" we're comprised of a lot of very fast players....running backs, defensive backs, linebackers, etc. the name came from the then popular comic strip "Terry and the Pirates". Terry always seemed to be fighting off the "Chinese bandits". Well, that's about as far as my memory goes. I recall watching LSU and the Chinese Bandits play an annual game against Texas A&M as a kid. Always hated it when that series ended. Always thought it was a natural rivalry sort of game.
  20. Maybe because RGIII is running their "offence". Don't know who I was offended by more .... RGIII or Manziel. Tough tough call. Ha. OK, hands down Manziel.
  21. I certainly agree with this list and more importantly the last six words. To the list I would add Air Force, and a multiple game series home and home deal with Army that continues past the current series.
  22. Unfortunately, that "compassion" of which you speak has just become another political buzzword for more entitlements and more government interference into the lives of every American. Good morning America! Who can we offend today? There has to be some group out there whose feelings can be hurt today, right? We haven't entitled everyone yet, right? Did anyone else notice all those offended fans watching the Washington Redskins play last night against Cleveland?
  23. No need t "fix" my post. If you want to take a shot at someone, man up and write your own negative post. My post was a positive thank you to John and his partners. If you need help in being negative without having to change someone else's posts, just give UNT90 a shout. He's always ready for that sort of thing.
