And, to think, some people long for an increase in government intervention in our lives. Because, you know, government is always so very efficient and does things sooooo much better than private industry.

Josh Howard named new UNT D Basketball Coach
KRAM1 replied to Jonnyeagle's topic in Mean Green Basketball
WHY for God's sake? That school has ZERO to do with UNT in Denton. Only connection is that it is part of the UNT System. If you went to UT would you want a UTEP shirt to wear around?- 14 replies

Well....ODU cut men's wrestling and Cincinnati cut men's soccer. Does that give you any hints? -
BREAKING: Boise State furloughs coaching staff
KRAM1 replied to Jonnyeagle's topic in Mean Green Football
The coaching staff at Boise was furloughed for ten days...not forever. Well, ten days if they made over a certain amount...some for seven days.....not permanent. -
BOOM! JUCO Guard Mardrez McBride commits to UNT!

He will or he won't play much at UNT and will be gone after one season. -
BOOM! JUCO Guard Mardrez McBride commits to UNT!

Yep...and quickly too. -
Still have my doubts whether DD would be HC material in today's world of college athletics. He is a very good assistant and has proven he can coach a variety of different positions as an assistant. Just not sure about HC...way way too political a job these days and too many booster challenges. Don't know, but do think he'd be better staying at the assistant level. Just my opinion of course.

So, I have been thinking about this in general terms...will this "shelter in place thing start to break people's daily habits a bit and will that translate to sports...both pro and college? What I am getting at is that people tend to be "creatures of habit" in their daily lives and in their likes and dislikes. With this "shelter in place" going on for an extended period resulting in bars, restaurants, offices, malls, etc. being closed, will people change their habits or drop existing ones coming out of this thing? Habits are reinforced by "doing them" on a regular basis. When that reinforcer is missing or broken for an extended period old habits can be dropped and new ones created. Think about the people who for years have gone to the same sports bar to watch baseball, football, golf, basketball, etc. on a regular basis. They can't do that now. Morning "coffee clubs" where people gather like clockwork every morning to enjoy a coffee and fellowship...they can't do that now. And, the list goes on and on...for me it is playing golf on a somewhat regular basis...will I slack off that after things start back up, will my wife and I continue our Friday afternoon "happy hours" at local watering holes, will we go out to eat every Friday and Saturday evenings? If we do, will we return to the "old regulars" or will that habit have been broken since our regular wait staff has moved on to other options after being laid off? All questions to be answered. Now to sports. Will people renew their season tickets at the same rate as in the past not knowing if there will be a season or not? And, after being laid-off will those folks prioritize revenue and expenses differently and not see "sports" in the same light as before? Without Spring Training to keep the juices flowing in the off-season for college ball and the off-season training and workout pro stories and with a "muted" NFL draft will some folks' interest fade? Did the cancellation of conference tournaments and the NCAA tourney cause a "break" in some people's college basketball habit? What about the golfers and the cancellation of the PGA Tour? The examples can go on and on about the "breaks" in people's normal habits due to the "shelter in place" situation. Bottom line, do we see a decline in attendance at both the college and the professional level? And, if we do, and colleges suffer the resulting decline in "donation" and ticket and merchandise and concession revenues, just what will that mean going forward? And, with pro sports where very few people have the "connection" they might have to "their college" to hang in there a bit longer, will season ticket holders abandon their tickets because they just realized it was now very expensive to keep them and that their interest has waned a bit after "no sports" for awhile? Will other interests take the place of going to games in person? It will be interesting to see how this pandemic changes (or will it?) people's habits and what that might mean for both college and pro sports. I have no answers, but I do have lots of questions. What do you think? Business as usual or will the landscape be permanently altered?

Could this be the start of the "reigning in" of skyrocketing college football coaching salaries? Just wondering. I really doubt it, but it is something to think about. And, with that thought in mind....is it the "push" needed to start reigning in the massive salaries of pro athletes and coaches? Without the revenue, will owners simply keep shelling out the "big bucks"? Don/t know, but it seems the landscape might be changing a bit.

Best of luck to Mo

Very sad news for the Mean Green Nation. Super guy and big time Mean Green fan...also loved his Chicago sports teams as wll. He will be missed along with his big smile.

R.I.P. Coach Mills. A super coach, but an even better man.

Coach McCasland getting it done.....Virus lockdown or not, Coach is on the prowl and getting it done!

Style? Mo said that he was transferring because he wanted to start at point guard...and we know who will be starting at point. Seems to me it has more to do with Mo's wishes rather than Coach Mac's style. But, whatever the reason, we should wish him well. I do think Coach Mac was a tad surprised by this, but am 100% certain that he will find a worthy replacement rather quickly.

Not a graduate transfer, and will have to sit out a year should he transfer to a DI school. He said he wanted to start at point guard to enhance his NBA chances. However, we all know who our starting point guard will be. Whether Mo has NBA talent or not remains to be seen. But, looks like this is the new reality in college sports these days. Mo is no different than probably the vast majority of football and basketball college scholarship players these days. They see the Pro game in their future...not college ball. How do we blame them these days? They have been brought up in a "me first" culture from the time they start playing at 4-5 years old. Like it or not (and I do not) there just is no sense of "school pride" in many of our college scholarship athletes these days. They see themselves as "paid employees" and "hired guns" for the most part and have no loyalty to their schools. It just is...it just is and we, as fans, just need to adjust to this new reality. I am no, professional scout for the NBA, but from where I sat last season, I would not expect NBA scouts to be rushing to Mo's games wherever he may land. Professional play may be in his future, but I expect it might be overseas. Yes, he can shoot the three...no doubt, but he does need work at the point guard spot. I do not know the "official" stats, but seems to me that he was good for at least four turnovers every game even with limited, off the bench, playing time. A point guard that turns the ball over is not, just in my opinion, a prime NBA candidate. I like Mo and think he is a good player and would be an even better player for UNT next season. But, as I said, this is the new reality. Obviously, Mo did not come to UNT to play basketball for UNT, but rather for himself and his NBA ambitions. I do wish him well and hope he finds a spot he likes where he can start at point guard. This is a new reality for me, and it has me thinking about my level of support for college athletes. While I have always given to both the academic and athletic sides of my schools, this new reality has me thinking that I might need to focus more on students on the academic side of the equation. It just is what it is...the new reality of college sports. Too much money beckons from the Pro game and entices these kids to see their futures in the pro game, not getting a good education and preparing for the actual reality of what the vast majority of student-athletes are facing after college. Good luck Mo. I will miss watching you play. I wish you nothing but the best and hope you fulfill your NBA dreams.

Already paid for my season tickets and made my Mean Green Scholarship Fund donation for the year. Figured it might help "bridge the gap" financially during these troubled times. I am 100% certain that should anything happen to the season, Wren would allow me to either roll the payments and donation over to the next season or offer me the option of a full refund of both. I would hope that anyone who is able to do so financially go ahead an pay for season tickets and make your Mean Green Scholarship Fund donation. Only if you are able, of course, but if you are it could really help the department sail the ship through these troubled waters.

Another excellent class and one that should continue UNT's legacy of dominance in soccer. UNT recruits locally because that is where a ton of excellent soccer players reside and play. The north Texas area has long been a hotbed of great youth soccer...both male and female. Yes, there are other such "hot beds" around the country, if you follow soccer at all you know that, but with the richness of the north Texas area talent pool, no real need to go elsewhere. Way to go Coach Hedlund and staff.

Still hasn't affected either of us with the virus nor anyone we know, but it is affecting our family in a completely different way. Those of you who actually do know me may recall that our son and daughter-in-law are both Navy M.D.'s stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA (Norfolk Naval Base). There is a Mercy Ship attached to the Norfolk base that is preparing to leave for New York to help with the coronavirus outbreak. Whether that is a good idea or not is another story, but none the less it is going...and it must be manned. So, some 800 folks...docs, nurses, support personnel...have been taken from the Portsmouth hospital (along with personnel from other military hospitals around the country) to man this hospital ship. So, guess which hospital is totally understaffed right now and is struggling to keep up with patient care? Bingo...you got it. The specialists, like our son and DIL, are being assigned primary care duties, ER duties, etc. in an attempt to keep up...BUT, get this, our DIL has been given 72-hour notice that she may be deploying to either the Hospital Ship or another military hospital to help fill the void. WHAT? Portsmouth is 800 staff short already and you pull more to go staff somewhere else? Ahhhhhhhh...your government at work! Both son and DIL "get it" they signed up for this possibility (they had already both been deployed during the Gulf Wars and Afghanistan/Iraq wars), but not easy with four little ones at home to care for with school cancelled and "shelter-in-place" requirements. So, no, this virus has not infected anyone with know as yet, but it certainly is affecting our family in many ways. But, I will add...health care workers (wherever they may be and whatever their jobs may be) are certainly doing their best to fight back this virus. If you know a health care worker from the front desk staff to the nurses to the doctors to the janitorial staff...thank them for showing up every day and doing what they can to battle this virus back!

Exactly correct...and I did a bunch of sport parachuting and I can tell you this...I did not always land on my feet either! Sometimes, I just didn't make it happen...but, you know what? Any landing that one gets up and walks away from with a smile on their face was a good one. One of the most "fun" things I did while in the Air Force was to join a group of sport jumpers and learn how to free fall.....Sooooooo much fun....well, except that one time I got blown way off course because I wasn't paying close enough attention...but, that's another story in itself! Ha! Thank you for your service Airborne!

Not to worry...we’ll catch ya next year. You have bigger issues to deal with at the moment. Stay safe! 👍👍. Appreciate the support!
