North Texas hires former Cincy Coach Jeff Koonz
KRAM1 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Looks like a nice hire for the Mean Green! -
That's a lot of moving around and lost time and added expense just for practices. I love the concept, but the practicality might leave something to be desired.

Article in Dallas Morning News indicates that the actual Spring Game will be played at the Star. Originally, I thought it was a scrimmage as well, but this article today seemed to indicate the actual game will be played at the Star....could be wrong.

I, for one, do not want UNT's Spring Game played anywhere other than Apogee. I want UNT to work on making our spring game an "event" that is a must attend for fans. Make it a really family friendly fun event with lots of various activities surrounding the game. I know Tech has a presence in the Metroplex and wants to recruit the area, but for the life of me I can't figure out why they would want to move their spring game to the Metroplex and out of Lubbock. A practice...a scrimmage....I get that for sure...but, the Spring Game?

Good luck to Coach Ek! Question...does this free up some coaching salary dollars to distribute among our assistants now that we no longer have co-defensive coordinators? A raise for Reffett and some dollars to spread out to other assistants perhaps? I know Coach Littrell has been looking for ways and trying to get his assistants more money. Does this get them even a little more?

Fun bunch to watch. Will be good to see the ones that return for the reunion. The announced attendance for the last men's home game against Rice was in excess of 2100. And, by seeing the crowd in person, that number seems about right. Was really surprised at the turnout...lacking anything in the way of a student turnout however. Here's hoping that more will show up in support of this team's 10th anniversary. Sometimes, it is OK to put aside personal prejudices and just come celebrate and support a bunch of good guys. Edit: So maybe some folks cannot put aside their prejudices to support one of UNT's better teams at their 10th anniversary. Fair enough, but too bad...these guys did leave it all on the court for their team and the fans. Just thought some folks might want to help repay them in some small way.

Renewed mine on-line just now. Super easy...done in less than five minutes. Folks...unless you need or want to change seats or something...why call? They have made on-line renewal super easy this year. And...thank you to all who have already renewed, bought new season tickets, etc. And...thanks ahead of time to all who will in the coming days, weeks or months. Every season ticket helps...a lot! Go Mean Green!

Great family! Bought quite a few appliances from them over the years...locally owned, friendly, knowledgeable, stand behind their products and have a great service dept.. Made a house call on a dishwasher I bought from them once that wouldn't drain. Guy came out, took his finger and move a part around and BINGO...fixed. Showed me how to do it in case it happened again (never has), and did not even charge me a dime! Just an example of how these folks took care of their customers. Perfect example of how to run a business. As I recall, they used the old post office downtown as a warehouse facility. I remember choosing not to have them deliver a microwave for me once, and I think I just drove over to the old post office and they put it in my car for me.

Save the Date-Cheer Scholarship BB Game-April 1st
KRAM1 replied to KRAM1's topic in Mean Green Basketball
We have our first sponsor! Kevin Kokjohn who leads Addison Transportation has contacted me to say that Addison Transportation will sponsor the game once again. This is our SEVENTH year to hold this event, and the SEVENTH year that Addison Transportation and Kevin Kokjohn has stepped up to be one of our sponsors! Kevin has been very supportive of this event through the years as sponsor, former player, silent auction donor and silent auction buyer. So, it is hard for me to come up with the proper thank you, but, folks, know that Kevin and Addison Transportation continue to play a large role in our success with this scholarship event. So....thank you, Sir, thank you very much. -
Great stuff!

Can always count on you, Sir! Thank you. -
At one time there were plans for a life size statue in front of Apogee. I believe Coca Cola was being presented with funding options for such a statue in meetings with RV prior to his departure. Have no clue where that stands or if it stands any longer.

People do seem to forget that. Didn't we win the SBC with five wins once during that period? While that was a great era and while we certainly could use some of those great players back, UNT was pretty much the best in a VERY weak conference....as, unfortunately our out of conference record shows. New Orleans Bowl years were super fun, however, anyway you want to slice it, but, for me, no more fun than our recent two HOD Bowl appearances. Again, sure fun during conference games during those NOB seasons for sure!

Excellent...thank you! ? -
We have so many great alums that could potentially really help this program and university with both their personal support and donations. So many graduated and walked away never to be heard from again....athletes, musicians, actors and actresses, writers, CEO's, politicians, scientists, doctors, lawyers, small business owners, and on and on. We can debate the reasons why and if they should or should not have supported their university without any pat on the back or special invitation to pay it forward for current and future students, but fact is, for whatever reason, they walked. That, folks, is water under the bridge. What seems to be the encouraging news is that current leadership, at the highest levels of this university and in Athletics, is working to change that situation for the better. Hopefully, folks are noticing the "reconnecting" that is going on from Jim McNatt to Stone Cold Austin to Nora Jones. Re-connecting takes time and effort. It is not a one call, one invite or one box of swag deal...it takes time. But, we are seeing effort being made almost daily in this area across the university. I am heartened by this effort and hope the effort is a concerted long-term strategy. Effort has been made in the past, but fizzled out. This time it just feels like it will be on-going and sustained. Time will tell, but initial reports and results are encouraging. We can all help by saying positive things about UNT in public situations and in reaching out to alums whenever and wherever we encounter them. To help, they do not have to be of Joe Greene, Steve Austin, Nora Jones or Abner Haynes recognizibility. Any and all alums we can help "re-connect" helps a great deal.

Wren Baker told me he had the bust that SideShowJoe created in his office and that they are trying to decide how best to display this bust and possible others.

Yep, it is that time of year again...time to start thinking about and planning for our annual UNT Cheer Team Scholarship Basketball Game. We are looking at April 1st this year with an afternoon tip-off around 3pm. But, that date/time is not official as yet. Much yet to formalize and coordinate before I can make it permanent. A little background for this year's game...you may or may not know, but UNT's Cheer and Dance Teams have been moved from Athletics to Student Affairs. While new for UNT, it is not unique within the University World as I have come to find out. But, this provides me with a new team to work with in coordinating this event. So, I need to do some coordinating with some new folks this year. First meeting has been held, and I must say, I am very encouraged by the potential support we may have for our game going forward. I am working on the possibility of moving the game to a new venue on campus that is better suited to basketball than the volleyball gym, but the volleyball gym remains a potential site...more on this later. In addition, I am working on a sign-up and donations link that will provide for our funds to go directly to UNT for the s holarship which will not have any fees taken from our registration fees and/or donations....result: more scholarship funds and an official receipt to donors and players fees that can be used for IRS purposes and that will give you credit for a specific donation amount. Again...working on it, but the possibility seems doable at this point...more later. So, what can you do at this time? Well, 1. Consider playing in the game, 2. Consider making a donation to the event and the Cheer Scholarship, 3. Consider being a sponsor for the event...individually or through your business, 4. Consider donating something for the silent auction...UNT related or otherwise like gift cards, game tickets, you name it...it could help, 5. Consider volunteering to help with the silent auction, the concessions, etc., 6. Can't play? Consider volunteering to referee...we need 2 minimum and four would be nice, 7. Consider attending the event...we need support and silent auction bidders. You can post questions here, post that you will play, will sponsor, have a silent auction item, want to volunteer, etc.. Or, you can PM me through GoMeanGreen.Com. Yes, this is pretty preliminary, but it is what I have at this point. I get the feeling that Student Affairs is going to be a great new partner for us. So...we raised a tad over $6,000.00 when all was said and done through last year's game...how much can we raise this year? Got to break our $6,000.00 record, of course, but by how much?

HOF worthy post! -
Hmmmmm...no...see Quoner's post. I even mentioned I did not think you were guilty. Just discussing polls in general and the "science" surrounding creating polls by the professionals. Did not think you considered yourself a professional poll "creator". Sorry if you were insulted...certainly not my point. I guess I could counter that folks are extra "sensitive" these days. Again, Sorry Harry, wasn't a shot at you but at professional pollsters in general.
-
Sort of a biased poll...no place to check if one liked it from the start. This is why poll numbers and results can be so biased and/or skewed in one direction or the other. People who create polls and the like for a living know how to create questions that lead to the answers they want from the poll. Very interesting "science" this poll creation thing. Not saying Harry had a pre-conceived outcome before leaving off one pretty darn obvious question, but, as UNTLifer indicated above, one highly probable and plausible seems to have been left off the list.

Been here since 1966. That's going on 51 years. Not bitter...not decrepit (well, maybe) and certainly remaining positive on the prospects for UNT Athletics! One is master of their own attitude toward things. I don't keep count of winning or losing seasons....it is always the "next one" that matters. Here's hoping the "next one" is another bowl season!

True...should try out for SNL.

100% correct. I have known John since his days coaching the UNT Men's program and coaching in Club Ball. This is John Hedlund...take him as he is...he knows how to coach and recruit soccer. Never was...never will be a media guy and does not care about anyone else's opinion of his coaching or his team. I always find it interesting when he agrees to be one of the coaches attending the summer Coaches Caravan events. He and the current long time coach at A&M (G Guerrieri)) used to coach the men together here at UNT. John was offered various head coach and assistant coach positions on men's teams when the UNT men's programs was AXED. He chose to stay at UNT and coach the women's team. I am glad he did...he's a winning coach!
