  1. Not trying to kill the messenger FFR. Just get tired of people knocking things they know nothing about. Yes, I have coached kids basketball, soccer and baseball. I managed a select soccer team for eight years and was club president for three years. My kids basketball team lost one game in two years...that's due to good recruiting, not so much the great coaching...hope Dodge takes a hint! Ha! By the way, I still referee yoth soccer...have referred ages U-6 through Men's leagues and high school...did a college scrimmage at UNT once when they still had Men's soccer. I had a feeling you would jump on the 0-0 tie at Frisco this weekend. Did you see they game? I doubt it....it was quite exciting, and those who did pay to see it (TV for me) got evey cent of their money's worth. Once again, the American sports fan, and the media too, I guess, equate a "good game" to a high scoring game. Joe Trehan IS NOT a soccer guy.....Channel 8 is NOT soccer-friendly...Dale Hansen "kicks it" around each and every chance he gets...if you viewed a different cahnnel you would have gotten a much better perspective of the game and a much fairer review. But, such is Channel 8...all of us "soccer friendly" folks know not to expect a fair shake from Cahnnel 8 sports. I'm not kiiling the messenger, just "telling it like it is"...there is bias in sports reporting too...and their are agendas...Channel 8 has one regarding soccer...no problem, I still watch channel 8 sports from time to time. It's just good to know what you are going to get when it comes to soccer. I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM with folks who don't care for soccer. It's the constant lack of understanding of the game from folks who don't like it that gets to me. The idea that you have to have a 14-7 score (that, but the way is 2-1) in football, or 56-54 in Arena football, or those exciting 2-1 baseball games...I give you Sunday's Rangers 2-1 win over the Red Sox...absolutely NO scoring after the sixth inning...ALL runs coming in the middle three innings with 1 run in each inning....and folks say a 2-1 soccer game is low scoring and boring...gee time of the Rangers game...3 hrs. 24 min....for all that 2-1 scoring...NOW FFR...THAT'S BORING! And, I played baseball through high school, summer leagues and some adult ball after college....I love to play baseball...it bores me to tears to watch. But, I don't make a career out of bad mouthing the sport...except on GoMEANGREEN.COM...Ha! So, stick to what you like...no problem what so ever...hey, there are folks out there who love NASCAR...can you turn left? My wife thinks golf is boring...can you believe that?????? NEVER will see 46,000 at a high school soccer game....but, how many HS football games draw 46,000? Been to a DHS game lately? By the way...you won't find the band, cheerleaders, etc. at the soccer games either....wonder how many band and cheer squad parents and relatives were at the 46,000 game? Let's play up the soccer playoffs, bring the bands, cheerleaders, have multiple pep rallies, cahrter buses, put flags up around town and paint the windows of local businesses, get air time on all the networks, get page after page written in the newspapers, and then let's see how many fans you get in the seats...same could be said about HS baseball too...the fan base seems even less at most of the HS baseball games I have attended in the last few years...if your aren't the girlfriend of a player or a parent, grandparent...not many others in attendance....been there...seen it. So, let's hope we see 46,000 at UNT's first home football game this year!!!!!! Can fouts hold 46,000? I can't recall that I know the exact capacity....I've been there with over 30,000 in attendance, but wonder...will it hold 46,000? UNT doen's have men's soccer, as you know...it has a VERY GOOD women's team. Have you seen any of the games? You might want to give it a shot next season....anyway, this is just fun as no minds will change in this debate......let's just put on our green and fill the stands this year! PS...have you fired off the mean green rocket as yet? I've built many of those things, but never thought to do the MEAN GREEN thing....looks great...10 - 9- 8 ...... FIRE! Let's have an update.
  2. WOW...Dodge hasn't even coached his first UNT game and folks are already talking about his leaving. Man, that's a change....but, do get a grip on things....if Riley come to UNT, Todd will want to see him through his college years...my guess....let's win some games and see where the Coach thing takes us...if Dodge wins and leaves for another school, we will be in the picture for a big name coach or another "up and comer". Me, I say lets win and then worry about losing our Coach. I wanted to "lose" our last one even when he was winning...BORING! Ha! Stadium thing...well, reminds me of church building programs...many start with a building fund that gets some initial "pop" and then lags as folks see nothing positive going on...you turn that first spade of dirt and the money again starts flowing to the building fund. Get it? Let's get some "stuff" out there and start something moving forward on the stadium...some announcements, some sketches, some talk...start a campaign.....then when that first spade of dirt is turned...WOW...I think the $$$$ will flow in....
  3. What a great situation to be in, and WOW have things changed at UNT!!!! What a great way to be coming into the season...lots of good PR and even some positive buzz regarding ticket sales. It has been a great off-season so far. Leaders Lead...and Competitors Compete....the best man will play at the QB spot....if anyone is worried about their "job" at this point, they are in the wrong game! Everthing about this is GOOD NEWS! GO MEAN GREEN....BUY SEASON TICKETS...JOIN THE EXES!
  4. Sorry FFR...you have NO CLUE what skills it takes to play soccer at any level above "kid soccer". I seem to recall lots of kids playing T-Ball and YMCA basketball too. Even been to Japan and witnessed the "wee ones" playing baseball, I have. How about Africa and the basketball that's played there...I have. Kids play sports all over the world and they don't start with any soccer, baseball, basketball, football, etc. style skills... they have to build baseball, football, basketball skills...your "homer" is showing. Kids "throw a basketball" and "throw a baseball" out there and start playing too....I seem to recall baseball being pretty popular in lots of third world Latin countries, and basketball is pretty big in third world African nation too. "Soccer is easy" to quote FFR. How many games have you actually played...no, kicking it around in the backyard with your kids does not count. Would love to see you out there trying to keep up if it is as easy as you say...yes, soccer players seem to the "uneducated fan" to look alike...they are all in shape...unlike baseball and football. "every player on the field does the same thing"...another FFR quote that is so far off base that it's funny. That's like saying all basketball players and baseball players do the same thing...basketball players all dribble, pass and shoot, right...gee, I guess they all do the same thing...and baseball...seems they all run, catch and throw and bat (I don't count the AL pitchers who are sissys and don't bat), so I guess they all do the same thing, right? Sometimes one should not talk about those things they don't know. So, no problem...pick the sport you like and enjoy! That's why there are different sports....I'll never change anyone's mind about the "beautiful game", and no one will get me to believe that baseball is anything but boring to watch...like watching paint dry....so, pick your game, buy your tickets and have a great time. Like I say...don't care what it is...If the Mean Green play it...I support it! GO MEAN GREEN
  5. Saw the article...saw the playoff game today on ESPN. Unfortunately, Jason did not have his best day...but, the Colorado Crush won, so Jason will get to kick again in the playoffs this year. I hope it's at a time when we might could get a group together for a "Jason watching party" at one of the local watering holes here in Denton. Might be fun...what say you???? Missed three PK's, but made enough to make the margin of victory hold up. I think one of the three was a poor snap that threw his timing off...not sure about the other two...and, he hit the sound/video system above mid-field that will not make him happy. This is one great kid, and he is an excellent kicker. My wife and I went to Denver this year earlier in the season to see him play. Great time, good win for the Crush. This kid deserves a shot at kicking at a higher level...can you say an NFL tryout? I think he has earned at least a tryout. Some team out there needs to give him a call.... Good luck next week, Jason...we'll be watching!
  6. UNT needs to stop thinking "small"....this is just one more "opportunity lost", but give the new Prez some time...things are definitely changing on campus and lots of the "old guard" are already feeling the heat. Money is definitely going to be "re-allocated" from some departments to others and WE are looking for high performing younger profs, etc. Hide and watch...it just might get VERY interesting in the next few months around the campus. I hear some profs are thinking of bailing out alreday...there is rumor of a possible "early retirement buyout"...I said rumor...and lots of "other" changes coming...get your seat belts on...the times they are a changing at UNT....the newest "emerging research university" in the state of Texas!
  7. Can't really believe SMU has kept him on this long...how long can you play the "poor me...death penalty" card?
  8. Geez...so sorry...ever thought of taking an anger management class....your forum rage is showing!
  9. Good for him...great player...
  10. Sorry...BUT...students or anyone in the first 10,000...and can we call today?
  11. It's been so long.......
  12. Wow...to equate soccer and NASCAR is quite a stretch...although I do think you make some valid comparisons...just don't buy the "creates a sense of suspense" thing with all the "time outs" and time between plays in football. Just makes for a long wait between any type of action...snooze time. Suspense...not so sure about that...I see lots of suspense in a man getting behind the defense and attacking the goal one on one with the goalkeeper. Soccer is a thinking man's game and a players game. Once the whistle blows...it's up to the players to win or lose...a coach isn't sending in every play and the plays aren't so scripted...set plays, yes, but even set plays are decided in most part by the players on the field. And, you don't get to rest all the time like you do in football with unlimited substitutions...you play for the full time...only 3 subs allowed in a 90 min. game....no time outs, no rest at the end of each period, etc. Anyway, greenminer, you make a valid point...it is definitely a matter of preference. We "soccer folks" will never win over the majority of football and baseball fans in the US...don't want too. The American sports fan is just not geared to take the time to learn "the beautiful game". I was right there with you when I saw my first soccer games...bored to tears...BECAUSE I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT. Like quite of few of us Americans, I learned it through my kids...and LEARNED is the operative word here....I'd watch the World Cup Final now in lieu of the Super Bowl if they were played at the same time...I am SOOOOOOOOO glad they are not...I love football too..."can't take that away from em". Hey, that could be a song lyric! Anyway...if the mean green play it...I support it...bring it on...see you in the stands!
  13. Yep...like those exciting 0-0 football games and 1-0 baseball games after about 3-3 1/2 hours....that's the long sleep. You just had a little nap at the soccer game Firefighter Rick! One of the "challenges" American sports fans have is that they believe it is all in the scoring....yes, I know...that's why we KEEP score....I say that's why they make a touchdown worth 6 points in football, so they can FOOL the American sports fan into thinking it's a high scoring offensive minded game. Yes, perhaps American sports fans are that easy to fool, who knows. Anyway, pick your "poison" as they say...I, for one, have never EVER been to a more exciting sports spectacle than Soccer's World Cup. And, yes, for me a 0-0 soccer match can, indeed, be a very exciting offensive AND defensive battle. Like I say...pick your support. BUT, whatever it is...if the MEAN GREEN ARE PLAYING IT...support it! Let's get the stands filled for Coach Dodge and his Mean Green!
  14. Because it's fun! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!
  15. I agree that soccer never has...don't know about that "never will be" part...NEVER is such a long time....BUT, I do know that baseball is a "WAS".....Football is the now "IS" as an American pastime. Baseball is just "pasttime"!
  16. Nice...and even nicer that it was a Dad and Son event! Priceless!
  17. In baseball's defense...yes, I will say something kind about baseball...I attended Oklahoma State for grad school, and they play a pretty decent brand of college baseball in Stillwater. The attendance, and I was at many games, was much better than 20-30...in the hundreds for all the games I saw...BUT, still "in the hundreds". Baseball is NOT a revenue generating sport. Will never pay anywhere near it's annual cost to operate, but then which sports at UNT do? Name one...ONE...women's sport that even pays the cost of keeping the towels in the locker room clean! It's about the $$$$, but not ALL about the $$$ when it comes to college athletics. If it were, we would not have college athletics! PERIOD!
  18. Let's HOPE SO...he has EARNED A SHOT at the next level. No one gave this kid anything...he earned it the whole way. Great kid!
  19. So, Daddy Dumpsalot, when was the last time you went to a waterpolo or horseshoes match? My guess is that both took a lot less time to play and were more exciting than sitting on your "duff" for 3-31/2 hours to watch a full 1-2 min. of actual action as you did at the last baseball game you attended. Yes, I agree that college baseball is much...MUCH...more fun and exciting to watch than professional baseball, but.....Have you ever even been to a man's college soccer match or an FC Dallas game for that matter? Just wondering. Me, I played baseball for many years, so am not "opposed" to the game...it's a game that is great to play...but, to me, very boring to watch. Like I said...don't worry, it's baseball, in spite of it being boring and much more expensive to the University to operate, that we will see before we see, if we ever do, men's soccer gain. It was, the "winningest" sport in the history of UNT athletics when it was here...probably still is if anyone checked! I guess I'll see you at the baseball games...I need a good nap!
  20. Let's give him a shot...probably didn't cost UNT that much as far as head coaches go, and softball is not what you would call a real revenue generator. Let's hope T J can recruit and coach away those fielding and hitting challenges we saw last season.....hey, we did get one big win last year...maybe it was all T J. Congrats to the new coach...NOW GO OUT AND DO SOMETHING!
  21. Baseball....give it a rest...bring back men's soccer...no, the cost would be much less than baseball...even considering the out of stste travel...how many away games does the baseball team play...hey, the college world series is just now over...check the number of games D-1 baseball teams play....40 plus per season...how many away games????? We already have a great soccer pitch ready to go...no extra cost there...scholarships are fewer in soccer than baseball and you need much less equipment and uniform costs for soccer.....so, if your argument is cost...GreenBat...give it a rest. But, have no fear...looks like baseball is on the way...soccer, not so much! Ah, yes, baseball and the Rangers, the only game where you can get up, go to the men's room (or ladies room as the case might be) stand in line at the concession stand for a beer and dog, get back to your seat about 30 min. later and the same guy is at the plate and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has happened in all that time. Really exciting...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! Baseball...great game to play...absolutely boring to watch for 3 hr. or so. O.K., you baseball folks...bring it on....I can see the steam rising now about the low scoring soccer games...just remember, if a soccer goal counted 6+1point for a PAT points like football we would see a lot of 14-7, 21-0, etc. games and everyone would be talking about all the points scored in soccer. What's up with a TD counting 6 points anyway? Why not 1 point...it's only one TD, right?
  22. Nice job...VERY nice job!
  23. We can only hope....who else thinks it might just be time to look for a new head women's bb coach?????? The program has been doing, well, not much, for many years...Tina S. seems to be able to grasp defeat out of the hands of victory time and time again. We should be able to do better, but what do others think?
  24. Jason had a nice game...21 yd. field goal and all "possible" PAT's...one blocked...not really his doing...what do you think? Good kid, good kicker...needs a shot in someone's camp (NFL) this summer. Hopefully, we can see a bit more of Jason in the playoffs this year. Colorado is the #6 seed, but they ARE in the playoffs. That's about the 3rd or 4th tackle he has made this year saving a TD or excellent field position. Hey, most aren't overly "pretty" tackles...he's a kicker....but, he gets the job done. Way to go Jason...keep it up...this kid is a great representative of UNT. He is proud of UNT, glad to be an Alum...yes, he did graduate...on time....and a great representative...couldn't ask for more.
  25. Yea, check out a few of the "bods" wearing football and baseball uniforms these days...the Rocket may still have an arm, nut the "bod" is going! Eating too much of his fat paycheck I guess. I have to say the basketball guys are not too "fat" either...
