  1. Very Funny! If it were not for some of the things that have happened at UNT over the years, it wouldn't have even come up! Too funny. Let's advertise the heck out of this game and get some folks in the seats for the "banner game"! Great job BB team...I smell a repeat NCAA bid for UNT! Fill the Pit and help make it happen! GO MEAN GREEN!
  2. If you attended the Denton Exes Mixer in July featuring Coach Dodge you know this will be a good evening and a great chance to hear from Coach Jones, Coach Slinker and a representative from UNT's Murphy Enterprise Center. If you do not know about the Murphy Enterprise Center this is your chance. I've seent he artwork for the new Denton Exes Basketball T-Shirt.....and it's great! You will want to get your at the Mixer on the 7th...and, for the PC crowd out there...no sinking battleships on this one...O.K., inside joke, but I think most of this board know what I mean! Remember, this is a Denton Exes event, BUT ALL ARE WELCOME...free "adult beverages" from Miller in Denton and some munchies to keep you alert until you can grab dinner after the event. Heck, you may even want to go to dinner with some fellow Exes after the Mixer. If you are in Dallas-Ft. Worth...plan now to take off a little early so you can get there by the 6PM start. I work in Dallas and I will be there in plenty of time. No excuses now...plan ahead and come out to a nice evening with the Exes and your fellow Mean Green Nation-ites! See you there. GO EXES...If you are not a member of the Exes, you will be able to join at the mixer...info will be available.
  3. My wife and I will be there. I feel a second victory. It will be great to witness a homecoming win! And, a win it will be!
  4. Lifer...There is a difference between the popularity in latin american countries and the popularity of the sport with those of hispanic origion here in the states. Don't see how you could be confused about that point. What do you think is the issue with monority players in baseball these days. The stats say they are in declining numbers. I tend to think it is the "slowness" of the game and the declining TV and fan base that is moving the numbers down. I am almost 60 and I can tell you there is definitely a difference in numbers today than in the 60-70-80's. Don't get me wrong, i played baseball and loved it. I still think baseball is a great game to play...but it's tough to sit through so much non-action for so long...in spite of those every so often late game rallies that take another couple of hours to complete with all the pitching changes, throws to first base (if you can really call that lob a throw), steps off the mound, batters stepping out of the box, etc., etc. baseball could do a lot to speed up the game and add some extra action, but so far has shown no willingness to change. Folks want soccer to end the "off sides trap"...one of the great plays in soccer when executed properly and one of the ways to get a goal scored against you if you slip up...to add scoring (as if it needed more scoring), but they never mention things like not allowing the batter to step out once the pitcher has started his wind up, not allowing the pitcher to step off the rubber once the batter is in the box and ready, not allowing a change of pitchers more than twice during a game, etc., etc. I think w could bring fans back to the game at the parks and watching at home if we found a way to speed the thing up....if falling on the field in soccer is acting, so is the constant walks to the mound, the "dance" between the batter and pitcher in stepping off the mound and stepping out of the batters box, and the lob to first, etc. to move a runner closer to the bag. The effect is the same...wasting time! Anyway.....Lifer...why do you think minorities are not gravitating to the game of baseball today in the numbers they were in prior years???
  5. Smitty, you have a point about the clock...but the lack of one is also what makes baseball so boring...it can go on FOREVER!!! But, I think you missed the question. This is not a soccer vs. baseball question. Take a look at the last question again, and let me know what you think about the dropping popularity of baseball with some of our minority populations and take a shot at explaining why you think that might be happening. I am interested in why our mionority kids are no longer flocking to baseball. I give you the "acting" of some of the soccer players. That is of most concern among the latin teams and players, but it is not immune to other national and club teams. FIFA is trying to crack down on that, and the refs are beginning to card such "stupid showmanship". It does hurt the game. However, an exciting comback can and does very often occur in soccer, in basketball and in football...all sports on the clock. That Cowboy win over Buffalo with over ten points in the last few seconds of the game was pretty exciting. Ever seen the Mavs come back from 20+ points down in the 4th quarter? How about that goal scored in "extra time" in the World Cup to send the game to extra play. Acting? How about that manager that walks to the mound every few seconds while his reliver warms up? O.K., we can all think of little items in all sorts that we like or dislike...that's why there is more than one sport. O.K. with me. Smitty, what about the question at hand? Got any thoughts? I'd love to hear them.
  6. Great thoughts, folks. I tend to agree that time and "local" interest plays a big role. Let me ask you this. Does the lack of a minority player grooup of any size at all play into it? When I was a kid black and hispanic players seemed to have made up a much larger percentage of the players than they do today. has baseball "lost" a big part of its potential market due to the fact that black kids and many other minorities are simply not playing baseball to the degree they once were in the US? If so, why are these kids not growing up to want to be baseball players in this day and age? I think this is a big issue for baseball in the US today. I know it is still VERY popular in may latin american countries, but why not so popular here in the states with the minority populations? Just looking for your thoughts on the matter.
  7. Man, you guys are going soft on me. You didn't get your "I hate soccer" juices flowing too bad. Just wanted to see if I could "stir the pot" a little. Hey, just remember, that 42-21 baseball game would have taken 6 days and 3 hours to play. You need a pillow and a cot to go to a baseball game. You can take a 30 min. nap, wake up and not one thing has happened. O.K., to each his/her own "poison". I do think this will be one of the very lowest TV rated series in the history of baseball on TV. Is anyone really watching the Rockies play? Looks like it will be Cleveland-Rockies in the Series. If that is so, what do you think the TV ratings will be, and will anyone be watching? Me, I am sure I will turn it on after the first 3 games just to see "what's up". But, I am thinking this just might be the lowest rated Seies in the history of TV baseball. With so many college and pro football games on mid-week these days, baseball seems to be dropping like a rock in the TV ratings. Anyone have a clue why "America's Pastime" is losing so much of its TV fan base? I have my thoughts on the subject, and you know one of them. It is too slow and too plodding for today's sports fan, the owners and players have priced the average fan out of the season ticket market and there are simply way too many games. But the big one is the lack of a swift paced event and the absolute boredom that some of the games produce. What do some of you baseball fans think? Serious, what do you think about this?
  8. Who Cares????? It's baseball...it's boring! Sorry, just can't get excited until the World Series is here and it is at least three games deep into the Series...then and only then might I turn on a professional baseball game. WAY TOO SLOW and too boring for me, but it is nice that you can get up, go to the men's (or ladies) room, get another beer and fix yourself a triple decker sandwich for a snack and come back to your seat and the same guy is still up at bat with the same guy pitching. Man, what a great game! Sorry...my apologies to all the baseball fans out there! Before you "skewer me" with your replies...I did play baseball through high school and loved playing it. I think it's a players game...not a spectator game. Too slow, too boring, not nearly enough action for my tastes as a fan. So, that now you can respond to this...what would I rather watch? Well, soccer of course! It's "human chess" with alot more action, and it doesn't take all day to play...and for you, "it doesn't have enough scoring"...just pretend that every goal counts 6 or 7 points like Ameican football and you can cheer all the 21-7 games as "high scoring affairs". Bring it on you baseball lovers!
  9. Man...when did the lawyers start ruling the world? My take...it's your responsibility! We need to get back to where the person screwing up takes the responsibility for their own actions...but, then again.....I am not one of those who believes that way to get rich in America today is to sue someone. We have way too many lawyers with not enough to do. The medical schools regulate the number of doctors they put out based on a demand formula...BUT, law schools...no way...you got the money...you pass the entrance exam and WHAM...you get to go to law school. We need to put some curbs on (BIG TIME CURBS) on the number and TYPE (WAY TOO MANY PLAINTIFFS ATTORNEYS RUNNING AROUND CHASING AMBULANCES!) of law school students we are admitting and lawyers the schools are graduating. AND, judges need to come down hard on layers (and their clients) who keep filing these STUPID lawsuits blaming everyone on God's green earth except themselves for their actions! OK, I am now back off my soapbox! My apologies to all the lawyers out there who do the right thing...and, yes, I know that is the majority...but, you "majority" need to do a much better job of policing your own! Goods and services cost way too much and plenty of the cost is the "lawsuit" cost factor! ,Nuff said!
  10. What time do the UCLA games start? How about OU? Think they arrange times so folks can get there from Oklahoma City???? I know OSU fans make it to Stillwater whatever time the game tips off to pack the house! If fans want to make a 7PM tip off from Dallas they fertainly can...I have a drive back and forth from dallas EVERY week day of the week as I work in Dallas...my son was a basketball ball boy for many years and we made it to the games in plenty of time. I leave work between 5 and 5:30pm on games days and make it in time for tipoff. Maybe it's just me...but I even make the 6:30PM Coach Dodge radio show on Mondays.....but, I do work in a location on LBJ near Midway now, but for years was in Bedford or in Downtown Dallas...if you call the Crescent downtown Dallas. It can be done...I know I diod it, and I tend to agree with the 7PM start on weekdays for our family types with kids....been there! If folks want to make it, they usually can find a way...not always, I agree, but more often than not...might be tough, but....good luck to all in getting to the games and thanks for being a fan big enough to care about this issue!
  11. Hey, if the "fight" happened, and with drex and SUMG both in attendance and reporting on it, I am 100% certain it took place, maybe it means we have some "fight in the team"...and a willingness to protect and defend the home court! O.K., a little dramatic there, but if it happened in the first practice, I tend to see it as a good thing for the long haul...you know how guys are when they "dust it up"...often much btter pals afterward then before....UNT may have the makings of another team that will make it to the "DANCE" again this year! Bring it on!
  12. Got5onIt...chill yourself a bit....it ain't that bad. This is a fan chat board....that should say it all. There are two sides to the FFR story and every story on here and many of the folks replying and having a say on the FFR thing were no where near the "action", and have no real clue what happened. I am sure it was something that should not have happened and probably will not happen again. FFR is a great UNT fan and a big supporter of the school...I am sure he was not pleased with the coach in question...I am sure the coach in question felt a little "giddy" over the win and the way the defense played...Man, they were GREAT Saturday night....but, let's let those who have a "dog in the hunt" settle what ever needs to be settled and move on...everyone is a UNT Fan here...opinions are opinions and worth what you want to make them worth...don't get too fired up over it, and don't let it ruin your day. Days are too hard to come by, and they don't come around a second time! Besides too much stress makes your hair fall out! Let's all enjoy this first win, congratulate the team, the coaches and the fans for a nice win for the MEAN GREEN NATION...it was a great evening and I was really pleased to see the number of cheeks in the seats that were in attendance after we dropped a few games in a row! The MEAN GREEN NATION has been awakened after afew "sleepy years" under DD...I say BEAT TROY and Bring on Ark. State, Navy the MUTS and the re4st of 'em! We are on a roll...undefeated for last week!
  13. Sorry about the typos in my posts errors...my thumbing skills are weak today!
  14. Who's coming tonight that has not been to the Coacjh Dodge show before??? Anyway to get the word out???? Let's pack the house!
  15. HUH??????
  16. Lifer...no problem bringing my own....it's just that some "goofball" had to cut off a good thing and paly the PC cop role. It's just my favorite beer has always been "whatever you are buying for me"...and this was FREE! Free beer, a great Saturday afternoon, college football with the Mean Green nation...it just doesn't get much better than that!
  17. GREAT GAME...absolutely great, and super to see the recognition! Do it again!
  18. UNTFlyer...you might just be my new Hero! Great post....
  19. YEP! The NCAA does not ban beer sales at games...there are still a couple of schools in D-1 selling beer in the stands...while I am not 100% for that, if it happened, I'd certaily be buying a cold one or two. ID can be checked, but it's the before game stuff that gets me...and the double standard UNT seems to be showing when it comes to this thing...you know...those energy drinks they give away are not the best things in the world for you, and those $1.00 hot dogs...I wonder what was in them? Maybe we should ban those "bad boys" in case someone gets a clogged artery...and, hey...those peanuts we sell at the game...doesn't the school realize that some folks are allergic to peanuts?????? O.K., sarcasm is not dead...but, do er really need the "I know better than you what;'s good for you" police out all the time? Just wondering...can we not just grow up and have some fun on game days? Ole Miss, Ou, etc. seem to have ti down O.K., let's stop acting and thinking small...can't be big time unless you think BIG TIME...and, before you say it...free beer is not what makes you Big Time and that is not what I am trying to say...if you don't get it...well, you just don't get it...and that O.K. too!
  20. O.K. "yyz28"...now, like your Mother told you...say something nice!
  21. Adler...that is GREATNESS!
  22. Add my congratulations to the list...it's hard to sit when you think you should be playing...and believe me, they think they should be playing and I am glad they do. They are competitors....most of us on this board have never suited up for a D-1 game...so we have no way of knowing how much class it takes to be a team player when you are benched for whatever reason...this whole team is showing class and they are sticking together. Way to go...great leadership from TD and a great bunch of guys who believe in their team...it showed in more ways than one Saturday night. Great win...they earned it! Stick around...more win to come.
  23. Yes, in the Village, and yes, the free beer from Bud and Miller. Why stop? It wasn't the free beer cans and bottles that were all over the parking lot....the free beer last year was in plastic bottles I believe. We seem to have no problem with everyone bringing their own "free beer" in coolers and in groups giving free beer to their members...so why the double standard???? Let's see you join the President's Council for a min. of $1000/year and you can have a drink with the Prez who doesn't want anyone to enjoy a free beer...you give, what $500 to the Mean Green Club and you can spend the whole game in what has been described to me as the "drunk tank" at the game itself and buy beer for $3 a pop. So, if I am correct...it's not a problem if you can donate money at a certain level...it's just a problem if a couple of the companies UNT takes donantion $$$$$ and advertising $$$$$ from want to give away beer free to the "regular folks"? O.K., I get it...it's a class thing. The "haves" get to have either free beer or buy beer, but the "regular folks" have to bring their own or do without. I get it now! That certainly makes sure everyone is a responsible drinker. O.K., sarcasm over...I just thought it a bit ironic that free beer was gone and the Prez was explaining to me why that was a "ggod thing" while she sipped on a "free margarita" at the President's Council tent. And, for want of "full disclosure", I am a President's Council member (maybe not for long if the Prez finds out who that guy was giving her a hrad time about the missing free beer ), and I did enjoy a "free beer" at the President's Council tent. Hey, free beer is free beer...only a few more and I'll have my qualifying donation back!
  24. Here's a question for you. For those of you who attend the Tailgate events before UNT games I am sure you have "discivered" that free beer is no longer available, and you cannot purchase beer either. But, if you are a "member" of some group like the President's Council, the Lettermans' Assoc., etc., you can have beer at your tents/tailgate areas. Well, lucky me...I mentioned this to our new Prez...Ms B at the President's Council tent...she indicated that it wasn't her idea, but that she agreed with it. Said there was an "incident or two" last season and we need to provide a safe and healthy environment for our students...said some folks came for the free beer and food and not the game...this while she was enjoying a nice Margarita provided at the President's Council tent. Was she even here last season????? I attended events last year and saw no such problems...And, dear me...have you been to Ole Miss, OU, Okla. State, LSU, Texas, TX A&M, TT, before any games?????? Lots' of alcohal at their tailgate areas and they seem to handle it just fine....at least when I have attended games at some of those schools. What's with UNT? I think this is "thinking small" and told her so...I don't think she agreed.....but, what say you? Do you recall any "incidents" with alcohol before games last season? I thought it was handled very well and ID were checked each time...I am nearing 60 years old and my ID was checked! I am not wanting to bash the Prez over this, I am just wondering if something happened I missed. Anyone know who cut of the free beer?
  25. Forgot...we will have a "special deal" for those wnating a Sink navy shirt at tonight's Todd Dodge show...$10.00 cash! Please have the proper change available...first come first served on sizes...if you want...send me a message on this board and I'll hold out your size if still available when you send the post. Please send the post prior to 4PM today to be certain I receive it in time. See you at the show.
