GO MEAN GREEN! This is really an important game for the Mean Green. Based on the improved play lately, I'd say UNT has a great shot at PAYBACK in Tennessee today. Go get 'em Mean Green!
-
In your mind your were "the best" stud on campus. There you go...keep dreaming. Where are the photos UNT90? Oops...forgot none of that XXX rated stuff here! You go, guy!
-
I am sure that UNT is letting it be known that UNT should be in the running for Tier I status....perhaps it is "good news" that there is no news. Maybe we should all believe that too regarding the football stadium? Yes, good news all around for UNT.
-
News is the plane in buffalo going down, news is the bomber in Iraq that targeted women and children (well, maybe this isn't new, but it is "news"), news is the passing of the stimulus plan...the fact that a government project will "cost more" is simply business as usual. Let's not worry ourselves until the dirt starts flying. Who knows, the economy may turn around and the investment funds value may double...more than offsetting the increased cost. Come on...way too early to get excited about this. Still too many "ifs". But, OK, if you think it's big news, OK by me.
-
I do think the stadium will be built. The economy will not be in this ditch forever, and since when did government contarcts EVER come in at the estimated amount anyway? Ever seen the cost overruns on almost all Pentagon projects? It will happen...the stadium will be built. It must be a slow day in the news blog business for Vito.

It did in the dark ages when I attened UNT as an undergrad!

Actually got a "C" in a freshman history course (hardest course of any kind I have ever had) and a "C" in Trig my sophomore year as I recall. I am VERY proud of both those "C's". I worked my tail off to get them. My hat's off to you if you had a 4.0 as an undergrad.

For what it is worth, the Denton Chapter of the Alumni Association has held numerous "meetings and mixers" with athletic dept. personnel over the last couple of years, and it was announced that everyone was invited each time...Denton Chapter Member or not. The Chapter has held one at the Athletic Dept itself, two or more at the Alumni Center and two at a restaurant in Lewisville just in the last two years. The turnout was OK for some, but not near what it should be after the Denton Chapter spent not only volunteer time but $$$$ staging the events. The athletic dept. was very helpful in providing personnel, literature and speakers (TD, JJ, RV,SS, etc.) at each and every event. Plus, there are the Coach Radio shows during football and basketball seasons. ALL of these could very easily have been attended by Mean Green Club members. My guess, is...if the Mean Green Club held meetings, the first one or two would get decent...not great but decent attendance, and then fall to nil. Lots of folks complain about this sort of thing, but you should see them "run for the hills" when you actually ask them to step up and help run the show. As long as someone else does all the heavy lifting, they are "good to go", but ask them to help...you would think you had just exposed them to some deadly disease. So, Mean Green Club members (of which I am one) if you want to start holding your own meetings with a board of directors and meeting and "events" for members...great, I'll participate, but get ready for lots of folks telling you what a crappy job you are doing and how you should have does this or that or should not have done this or that. Just get readyy because it will start the first time you announce an event...wrong time, wrong day, too late, too early, food was bad, didn't cost enough, cost too much, the wrong speaker, it wasn't advertised to enough people, and on and on. Trust me...I know from first hand experience. That does not mean it is not worth doing...it is and it is fun...and some folks actually thank you for the time and effort you put in trying to do "good things" for UNT, but don't expect lots of volunteer help and don't expect folks to appreciate what you are trying to do. Start the meetings...I'll be there as often as possible and would even be willing to help out with the organizing and work. I just want everyone to be realistic about what they are thinking about doing...remember, no good idea goes unpunished. By the way...as was mentioned...Mean Green Club members can meet before each home basketball game at the Mean Green Room abnd before each football game at the Deck. Lots of opportunities for Mean Green Club members to meet. Yes, I know this was already mentioned. GO MEAN GREEN!

BTW...my Dad is the guy who turned Pat Boone's restaurant into a bank...the design and construction work that is. I recall eating at Pat Boone's more than once before it closed and was turnede into the bank. I do not recall it being a "club", but i was a bit young to worry about which beer was served at that time. Too bad...I like beer. I wonder if Pat Boone is a member of the Mean Green Club???

Sorry, but I am with the folks who thought it "strange" that over 2/3 of the scholar athletes left after being recognized at half-time. Heck, most didn't even show up until right before half. This is starnge, and all the "they have to study" stuff is just plain making excuses. I recall my days (yes, I can remember that far back) as an undergrad at UNT. I had tests and exams, papers to do, a part-time job of 30+ hours per week, campus activities, clubs, fraternity and, believe it or not a girlfriend or two that "took up" a bit of time...and I maintained a 3.85 GPA. AND, i do not recall missing a UNT basketball or football home game in my four undergrad years. That is said to just emphasize that students (especially decent students as all these were last night) "find a way to do things they see as "important". The overall student population at UNT, at the moment, simply places very little importance on supporting their athletic teams. I found it odd that other athletes did not stay to support their fellow athletes last evening. Too bad, they missed a good game. My thanks go out to the members of the Pit Crew who made the game and cheered as they always do. Way to go PIT CREW! It was a nice game, and, yes, some folks will complain that the end was again "messy"...so what, the game was "in hand", and the win is in the books. OK, I would like to see UNT keep the pressure up and not get sloppy at the end, but I am not going to complain about last night's victory. Payback to UNO for earlier in the season. Payback is good in this case! On another positive note, I got to meet fellow GMG.com poster Green59. That was a treat, as it is whenever I get to meet fellow GMG.com members. Put an extra positive note for me on a nice evening supporting the Mean Green. Do not want to close without saying CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE SCHOLAR ATHLETES RECOGNIZED LAST EVENING. And, a side note to SUMG...yes, there were too soccer players recognized! Good things are happening with the MEAN GREEN. Go Mean Green!

Theory of Intelligence I don't think I've ever heard the concept explained any better than this . 'Well you see, Norm, it's like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.'

I would hope you wouldn't say a 3-2 game was a 1-1 game. What would your math profs say? Like I have said before...no end to this debate, but "ain't it fun"? I cannot belive I got to page three with this thread. Whoooo-Hooooo! I think there are several "closet soccer fans" on the GMG.com board. -

The guy has to be on crack! Too funny! Good actor...I wonder if he can sing...hip hop. Has anyone heard him sing? I think he needs a stop in rehab first. -
If you build it, they will name it! I hope that some big $$$$ donor comes forward soon and UNT can "break ground". Man, that will be a great day in the life of the Mean Green Nation. Let's call it "The People's Stadium" in honor of the new administration in Washington. JUST KIDDING!

Just FYI...for years my wife and I have been designating part of our President's Council membership "dues"...donations...to the Mean Green Club/Athletics. I am now being told that starting this year...I guess with renewals and new memberships as they develop...you will no longer be able to do this. Interesting, and on top of that, the minimum donation level is going from $1000/annually to $2500/annually. Again interesting. This in addition to there now being a charge for President's Council events that, in the past, were included in your donation level. So, if you are a President's Council membner and have not heard this you might want to check it out. My wife and I do not want to have to give our entire donation through the President's Council to the Prez to place where she wants it. We would like to have the ability to direct our UNT donations to the areas we wish to sponsor...the academic areas and athletics, etc. So, we will have to make some decisions regarding President's Council when our renewal date arrives. It's a good program and we have enjoyed our membership, so am not telling anyone to change, just wanted to make some folks aware that "change" is brewing. I am, as we speak, trying to contact folks who can "confirm or deny" the rumored changes. If you know the real "scoop" send me a PM or just let everyone know here on the board. Our level of donations to UNT WILL NOT drop (probably will increase) in spite of the President's Council membership change (if they occur). We'll just give to the individual areas on our own. Too many good things happening at UNT to let something like this stand in the way of support. GO MEAN GREEN!

You are 100% correct...Frankie handled this incident in a very calssy manner indeed. I am so glad you can recognize class when you see it. Thanks for posting this....at least the fans were not throwing beer at the players and coaches as they left the game ala Texas-OU football games. It happens...and not just in soccer. I know that's a surprise to some. -
Agreed 100%, but sometimes the "better thing to do" is to think and keep certain opinions to oneself. Emmitt01 is a good guy, I have met him and he is a great member of the Mean Green Nation, but do not think such "opinions" need be expressed here.

Quoner...previous best player defects to Brazil???? What? Just an attempt at bad humor or what? Tell me how a national team player "defects to Brazil"? If you, or anyone for that matter, actually watched the game, there is no way you would "fall asleep" or think it dull. Lots of "hits" for you hockey fans too. So, a 14-0 football game is, by definition, a "bad game"? Please explain that brillant piece of logic? Mexico is trying anything to get out of its current losing streak. The long ball is not their game, as a poster noted, and with the wind and field conditions it made it even that much more "interesting" that they tried it at all. But, Mexico does have some speed with all the young players on its roster. I though the US was "lucky" to get the shutout as Mexico attacked as best it could and have several really nice shots on goal. A couple of nice plays by Tim Howard in goal "saved" the game for the Americans. Anyway, it was a nice win by the US, and the strategy to play it in Columbus was worked very well. Not as cold as expected, but windy and wet. The US squad is much better suited for those conditions than is the Mexican team. If you were "whipped" by watching...why did you watch? I'm guessing you just wanted to say something "cute". USA-USA-USA!!!!! Oh, yes...GO MEAN GREEN! -
That's it Emmitt01...JUMP ON FLYER. All he has done is provide great info and hard work on behalf of everyone on GMG.Com and, in fact, the entire student body at UNT. Nice job Emmitt01. You might want to send Flyer a little private message and "explain" that "mouthpiece" comment a bit. Lame, very lame.

And, where do you go for leadership on this? Can anybody say "Lee Jackson"? That should tell you just about everything you need to know. And, Pres. B seems to be more interested in setting up a new dept./division of American Indian Culture since UNT has the largest population of American Indian students than any other university in the state. Not at all saying that's a bad thing, but IS THAT LEADING on the big issues????? Just wondering.

BonfireBrian...many thanks for making the effort and the drive to make the game tonight...and in bringing some friends. I know the drive can be a "challenge" at times as I have commuted from Denton to Dallas or Bedford to work for over 25 years of my career. And, after leaving work right in the middle of "rush hour" I still made the games. But, it was tough and more than a few times I questioned my sanity. At least, I did not have the loner drive home after the game. But, it is great to have you and your friends at the game. I applaud you and everyone who makes the effort to attend. It amazes me how many "excuses" I hear from students and "townies" as to why the simply cannot make the games...and here you make the long drive round-trip. Many thanks...GO MEAN GREEN!

Progress..I see "good things" here!

One has to think this was a "planned" event by JJ and his staff to shed himself of players he did not think "fit" his system. Not that they are bad ball players or bad kids, just not a JJ system kid. If that's the case...and we really do not know as yet, it was really sad that JJ waited until after the semester started to "cut" these kids. They will have no shot at spring ball anywhere else, and may simply lose a semester in the effort to find new "homes". I do hope that a few get looks here at UNT. I would imagine one or two could play in the Dodge program. Stand by...we'll find out soon enough. GO MEAN GREEN.

NO WAY you guys hijack this thread and turn it into a Stars game review... USA WINS!!!!! 2-0 ... that's 14-0 for you American football guys! Michael Bradley scores both goals for the US. Michael Bradley happens to be the son of the US head coach, Bob Bradley. Gee, what a unique idea...your highly talented and athletic son plays for you on the team where you serve as head coach. And, your Dad inserts you into the starting lineup because YOU DESERVE TO BE THERE after EARNING the spot in practice sessions. And, to top it off, no one is complaining about the head coach showing favoritism or knocking the kid simply because his dad is the head coach. WOW...what a concept. Now, where have I seen a similar situation recently, but where some folks are knocking the kid simply because he is the head coach's son?????? Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Nice win, expected, but nice none the less for the US. Great start to the final stage of World Cup qualifying. Oh, you know...the World Cup where teams from across the globe actually do participate...very unlike some other unmentioned professional sport with "World" in the title of its championship series where teams from NO OTHER NATION participate. USA-USA-USA!!!!
