Is This The Year The Cowboys
KRAM1 replied to NT03's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Tough call...tougher than what UNT's record will be in my opinion. Big question of injuries...if the Cowboys stay healthy and if a couple of the new additions (trades, new-signs and rookies) come through then I think they have an excellent chance of getting into the playoffs as a wild card. With the Cowboys in the east it's almost like being in the Big XII South...you can be better than a ton of teams and still miss out...both the Giants and the Eagles look to be pretty darn good going into the season...so, even a wildcard might be tough for the Cowboys, even if they have a better record at the end of the regular season. But, I say they'll stay healthy and a couple of guys will step up that we don't know THAT much about right now and they'll get a wildcard slot...will win that (yes, Tony gets the ape off his back), but they lose the next week. Hey, it's training camp time and everyone looks good, right? -
Great point...you can rest assured they would have uncovered it...This stuff is "out there" for sure, but the idea that only conservatives and republicans have a "nut case fringe element" is pretty nutty in itself. Seems when Bush was in office there was a rather large contingent of liberal/democrat nut case fringe elements around...heck, some still don't even acknowledge that Bush is no longer president. There is plenty of "fringe nut case element" to go around...I dare say no one has a monopoly on that.

I'm thinking your wife has the same idea... Just another gov't handout that the taxpayer will pay for with their hard earned money. I just love the idea that I am now helping folks buy new cars...already helping folks pay for homes they couldn't afford...now it's cars and they are working on having the taxpayer pay for health care for EVERYONE whether they earn a dime or not....man, why should some of these folks work...Uncle Sugar will take care of it for you. Nice.

Next year there will be a big construction site where the run was held this year...think about how great that will look!!!!! They will have to find another course for the run, but "rumor" has it that there will definitely be a "2nd Annual" run. And that, Mean Green fans, is a GOOD THING! GO MEAN GREEN!

Correct...the coaches were there and were available to speak with members of the Mean Green Nation as were several parents of current Mean Green players. Come on, Emmitt, can't I say something about you being positive for the first time this century???? Pretty please, may I???? I agree with the grades Emmitt gave to the event...my overall grade is a B+ ... would definitely have been a "A" if the turnout had been better...but the crowd, while small, was definitely upbeat and very happy to have football "around the corner". Great getting to meet some more GMG.com members during my clandestine Tank Army T-Shirt sales. In face, sales were pretty good, and I was able to sell a few to folks who were not on the board or who had not as yet pre-ordered. Pretty neat, but, man, it made me walk to the car more often than I would have liked and, if you were there, you know where the parking was and where the event was...BUT, anything to help raise scholarship dollars for UNT students...many many thanks to all who have purchased or have committed to purchase the shirts. COME ON FOOTBALL...that's Mean Green football, by the way! GO MEAN GREEN!

"down The Corridor Of Years"
KRAM1 replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
drex, you are losing it...let me remind you that debate and One O'Clock Lab band...are not team sports. Nor, for that matter is the Drum line ...and does the NCAA recognize Cheer leading as a team sport? Now, while I admit to being proud of all those accomplishments, you are really stretching here.... GO MEAN GREEN! -
Take a little personal responsibility and get going...Trina....get a job at McD's to tide you over until you find something else...good grief...here we have a prime example of what's wrong these days...people think they are "owed" things just because they are alive and breathe air I guess. The "entitlement" generation and state just keeps finding more recruits....This is totally without merit. My guess is that the school did not "promise" every graduate an immediate job after graduation...hey, join the military...they need folks...that was my first job after grad school. Hello Air Force! And, I have been without employment about four times during my 30+ year career...so far...IT HAPPENS....so, do what you need to do to keep "bread and beans on the table" until you find a position more suited to your skills and abilities. No shame in taking any honest work when you need a job. Been there...done that. I'm thinking there's a military recruiter out there that needs to talk to Trina. Anyone here, think she would even consider that option????? I think not...she'd rather get some sleeze ball attorney to take a case like this that looks like it hold no merit what so ever. But, I'll admit to not knowing all the details...you know, just for full disclosure purposes and so some of my liberal friends won't call me a "non-thinking conservative with compassion for his fellow man"....you know that drill, right?

Great to see JQ playing in that green. Too bad I don't get CFL on the home TV...can't understand why someone doesn't televise CFL here during this time of the year...at a minimum...since most of us are so starved for football by this time of year that CFL might just get decent ratings. Rick...where did you get this? Is it on some premium cable package or what? GO JOHNNY Q.

So, I'm at the Alumni Center picking up a few Tank Army T-Shirts before the Kickoff-Cookout today and I spot this book by LaForte and Himmel with the title "Down the Corridor of Years" - "The History of UNT in Photos from 1890-1990. As i am flipping through the pages and doing "remember whens"...I spy this quote...see if you can figure out what the guy is talking about before you scroll down for the answer... circa 1984: "For example which North Texas sport has never had a losing season, has a winning percentage of .734 for its entire history, has appeared in the national top 20 rankings every year since 1980, and was the first team sport ever to receive an NCAA post-season tournament invitation?" This you have it figured out... Men's Soccer - Quote by Coach Richard Lowe from the Winter 1984 edition of the "North Texan". man that brought back great memories of some great teams and then some really Title IX thoughts. If only...if only...... GO MEAN GREEN!

I agree with the comment about the low turnout. Maybe the weather had something to do with it or the time of the event, but those who did miss the event missed a good time. I really do feel a bit for the folks who work so hard to put these events on...I can imagine what RV and Coach Dodge thought when they looked out over the 25-30 folks lined up in front of the stage to hear them speak. Yes, there were plenty of other folks under the tent staying cool or in the locker room area picking up their season tickets, parking passes and Mean Green Club gifts, but come on folks...UNT fans complain all the time about wanting to be "big time" and then they turn out in 10's to the season kick-off event. That's just too bad...I had a great time and talked to lots of positive people and met some new Mean Green fans...got to meet and talk to the current treasurer of the UNT Parents Association...his family even bought four TANK ARMY T-shirts that I was peddling from my car like some "drug salesman" since the dept. wouldn't allow us to sell at the event...BTW...thanks to those GMG.com folks who purchased T-Shirts either through pre-order or from seeing the shirt on me at the event...and yes, to those also who had their arm twisted to buy a shirt or two from yours truly. Folks, if you want to be BIG TIME, you better start acting like it years before you ever make it there...the MEAN GREEN fan base sure didn't act like it today by the small turnout. Good chat from RV and Coach Dodge...when I spoke briefly to Coach Dodge after he had spoken and in the cool of the locker room he made a comment that I found very positive...he said it was "credibility time"...I think that says a great deal about where he thinks this team and this program is headed. The player who attended were positive and looked ready to do some hitting. It was also great to be eating a Syracuse Brat in the area that will be the end zone of the new stadium...good brat, of course, but even better knowing where I was sitting...had lunch with Greenjoe and his always lovely wife and EagleMBA and his lovely wife...you guys are lucky fellas for sure. Anyway...those that made it out had a great time, if you couldn't make it this year make plans to attend next year...it is a fun couple of hours. GO MEAN GREEN!

No problem...I'll get with you.

Best line of the day! And, a big "YES SIR" to you for that one... now that's funny!

+1 Nice....

Dodge has said that UNT QB's will be taking snaps from under center this season when the situation warrants. I take him at his word on that, and wait to see which "situations warrant" such a set. It is going to be a good year to be a MEAN GREEN fan. Count on it!

OK, a report I just saw says the Michael Vick is close to signing with a team...at least he said he is...did not mention the team in question. However, it reminded me of an article in Today's' Wall Street Journal talking about what position Vick would play if he returned to the NFL. The article seemed to think he would not be as a full-time QB as it would take too long to lean the full offensive package with a new team (??????), but may be best suited to line up in the Wildcat formation which, the article stated, many more NFL teams will utilize in one variation or another this season after Miami's success with it last season. One reason given for Vick's future not being at QB was the fact that he would rather run than throw and that no NFL team in today's environment could consistently win with a QB that runs when he should throw to open receivers. Said Vick would often run when there were open receivers down field. He would just "panic" (my word) and run it seems. What say you? Is Vick a NFL QB or his he better suited for the Wildcat role, receiver role...what? As far as should he be able to sign back with an NFL team...my opinion...absolutely. Stupid, mistake by a guy with too much money on his hands and too little life experience. Too many "hanger on's" around on the take influencing what he does...heck, they have let guys whose "crimes" involved gun use against human beings...this was dog fighting. While that is stupid and illegal and just cruel to the animals...it is not shooting another human being. Sorry, i do place human beings a bit higher up on the "food chain" of priorities than I do dogs. I know some folks would disagree, but that's my opinion...but this question is about where Vick should play when reinstated...not if he should be reinstated.

OK, I'll admit to having not read Sports Illustrated in sometime, but since college football season was fast approaching (yippee), I was asked if I wanted a free sub to the magazine. Why not? Free, right? What's not to like? So, I get my first issue and it is, for want of a better description, "lacking in any page count" from what I recalled the last time I read the magazine or subscribed. So, I'm thinking...must be an off-week. Well, not so much. The next issue has all of 78 pages. Now, I'm thinking that some comic books out today must have more pages than that! And, the 78 pages include all the full page photos...great shots, but still...it's a magazine that is dedicated to writing about sports, right? In comparison, I have noticed no such decrease in the page-count of my Golf and Golf Digest magazines...yes, they are monthly rags and SI is weekly, but is it just me or is SI getting smaller and smaller these days? By the way...way too much baseball in the issue this week, but then it does have the "perfect game" on the cover...PRICELESS! Also included is an interesting full color two-page photo they titles "Split Precision" involving France's synchronized swim team...I'll leave it to your imagination to describe any further. Thank God it only had a very small mention of Mexico's absolute crushing of the US B-team in the Gold Cup football Concacaf final.

Well, as a finance guy, I have to agree with Quoner on the billboard thing...the ROI has to be ZIP on such an expenditure. If you want to raise awareness, the things RV talked about do that as well. How many folks will buy season tickets because of a billboard? The billboards UNT did touting the University were fine, I guess, but if you live in the DFW area and you are not "aware" that UNT exists...well, no amount of billboard space can really help. Other schools may have more $$$ to spend on such stuff, but I doubt ECU picks up much from a Dallas area billboard. I wonder if it was an Alum just "sticking to someone"? I do not recall seeing billboards for ECU, Duke, etc., etc. during my travels throughout the Metroplex. Not at all saying they are not there...I am sure they are if they have been seen by members of the Mean Green Nation. But, being the observant Boy Scout that I once was, the billboards sure don't have a very broad impact. That's my problems with billboards...if you drive that way great, but you tend to get the same people seeing the same billboard over and over during "drive times", and less frequent travelers may even miss the things entirely if they are actually in any traffic. I am sure the billboard ad folks would disagree and have all kinds of stats to prove me wrong. Great for them, but I have never bought anything or checked anything out or changed a service provider because of a billboard. I am pretty sure I am not alone in that either. What kind of "stuff" would I like to see? Well, the "stuff" we get on the radio with the Coach shows is great, the plugs we get from George (and others sometimes) on the Ticket reach sports fans (at least). maybe even a few $$$ thrown at HS football/Basketball programs in the area with schedules, etc. might help...those cost so very little...and local newspapers...and, gasp, Internet ads or Facebook even...all I think would do better than a one location...$2500/mo. billboard. Just how many of those must you do to get any real exposure other than the same 2 times per day drive time folks on the major freeways around the metroplex??? Just wondering...obviously, I am not an "ad guy", so those who know "better"...be my guest. GO MEAN GREEN.

Best gig in a sit-com ever...the helicopter and the chickens from WKRP in Cincinnati...brought back some great memories...yes, a priceless episode indeed. Thanks for reminding me of that one....too funny. If you have not seen it, you have missed out on one of the greatest episodes in TV history. Do that have this show out on a DVD????

Come on...I know you...of all people here on the board...are old enough to get it. Maybe its dementia setting in for you....Was just trying to "pick on myself" a little...it was a joke aimed at my own expense. Why not join the crowd here who like that sort of thing?

Good News...nice read. I like the kid's attitude. He will definitely help anchor the OL if he is 100% ready to go. Another reason to look forward to better times this season for the Mean Green faithful. OK, I'll admit that I almost didn't read the thread because at first I thought it was about Drake University somehow. Now, that's funny, right?

And, let's not forget the Howdy Doody Show with Princess Summerfallwinter spring! Bwana of the Jungle with Froggy Sanford and Son All in the family Star Trek (Original) St. Elsewhere/NYPD Blue West Wing Oh, man could I go on and on...even Donna Reed and the Ricky Nelson Show.... See, some didn't even realize TV was available in the "dark ages".

WOW...OK, you would have to put me in the camp with those who think there are folks on this board that have been trashing Riley....for what reason, I certainly do not know. Since I have graduated from three colleges and attended one other...two are in the Big XII by the way, and since I read their boards and alumni "stuff" too, I can tell you...none of my "other" school's fans ever go off on coaches and players the way this board does. Agreed, some posters, etc. are none too happy about things at times, but I have never seen what appears to me to be the continued negative rehtoric like you see on GMG.com regarding one's own team. I am sure there are boards of schools out there that go way beyond what is posted here, so, believe me, I am not saying the posters here are "the worse" around or anything near it. I am just saying that it surprises me how negative folks can be toward individual players and coaches. It will probably surprise me just as much when some of the folks who think the team will be "awful" again this season and how Riley will get beaten up and how Riley can't do this or that and how Coach Dodge should do this or that (BTW...some of the suggestions here for Coach Dodge have been excellent ideas indeed...we all know that) change their tunes when the wins and much improved play comes. Charlie nt73 has some great experience and some great points...I tend to relate to his enthusiasm and positive attitude toward the program...Tasty also has some great points...as do many...many...of the other posters here on GMG.Com. Both Charlie and Tasty are great members of the Mean Green Nation and both love the Mean Green. We can all agree on that....so, let's ramp it down in the rethoric catagory....and I'll start another strike if Tasty gets banned. Ha!

Had a couple of PM's...wanted to keep this "top of mind" because it raises $$$ for scholarships....with the current state of the economy, UNT students need as much help as they can get and the Denton Alumni Chapter wants to help do what they can to ease the burden for students and their families....it's also a great way to have some fun and show some school spirit for the Army game. By the way...I wore my Sink Navy shirt to the Navy Alums tent before the UNT-Navy game and to a person, the Navy folks loved it...two of them even gave my wife and me some beer and hot dogs! How's that for fun? We will definitely wonder in to the Army area this year with our shirts...we even have a friend whose daughter is a plebe this year at West Point...I am trying to sell them Tank Army shirts, but that sale is not going to well at the moment...BUT, they love the design and the idea behind the shirts. Want to help? Want to have some fun? PM me and let me know number and sizes...we can hook-up this Saturday at the Cookout. Thanks to those who have already ordered and purchased...your support is VERY much appreciated. GO MEAN GREEN.
