  1. I'll take him at his word. Seems there is a family tradition with the military. And, yes, you have to be a West Point cadet to play football for Army. That had to be a joke question, right? I wish the young man nothing but the best. God speed and make the Mean Green proud.
  2. You must not have watched many Dallas Cowboy games last season. They were plain pitiful...along with the Mean Green. I do not think it is negative to point out the obvious fact that tackling was a "challenge" for last year's Mean Green. I am pleased to see the emphasis on this of the very basic skills related to the sport called football. It's amazing to me that kids can get to the D-1 level and tackle as poorly as NT did last season. Improve this area, and "W's" will increase. GO MEAN GREEN!
  3. Silver Eagle...you have a point...I think we would definitely need Athletic Dept. OK...as for what we did, we could perhaps find volunteers in the community with skills needed to do some of the work. Would take some effort on several folks part and an Athletic Dept. OK, but could perhaps work. BUT, the key is getting folks to volunteer which I am finding these days is not an easy thing.
  4. Come on you folks...someone has to have at least some interest in helping raise scholarship $$$$ and/or having a great time on holiday Monday....I know...shameless promotion, but I have to keep this up as we definitely need players and supporters.....and sponsors. Doesn't someone work for a firm that might be willing to donate a sponsorship? They start at $50 for a cart sponsorship and go up to a very reasonable $1500 for "tournament sponsor" level. That is really a small amount for most tournaments...even $200 will get you a "hole sponsorship" for your company...the $1500 even gets you 4 golfers in the tournament...that's $500 worth right there. Single player fee is $125, BUT you can play free if you get some friends and family to sponsor you at a min. level of $250 in total sponsorships and that level not only allows you to play free, but gets you a $50 gift card to the Alma Mater Pro Shop. Can't beat it! Someone...anyone????? I know you are out there and I know you folks work for some companies with soft spots in their hearts for students trying to get funds for school......
  5. Hey, Rick...how about we do something about that? Could the folks here on GMG.com get together and try to fix it up at least a little...maybe paint the thing? New carpet....I don not know what we could do as I have never been in the thing, but from your description it sure sounds like it could use a bit of "fixin' up". I hear a bunch of complaining on here, but I know that GMG.com folks are real fans...maybe we can come together and help pitch in to fix the place up a bit...especially for Army and the like. Could turn it into a Saturday work day and have a sort of tailgate while we are doing it. Think it's possible? I'd volunteer to help if we find a day that works...maybe even a Sunday afternoon when all the Saturday events are "over" for the guys with families, etc. And the ladies, of course...they are usually much better at this decorating thing...just saying...as I know I have little to no creativity when it comes to this stuff. Is this even remotely possible???? GO MEAN GREEN!
  6. May have to come out Sat. if the calendar is open fior a change on a Saturday evening......I'll check it out...GO MEAN GREEN!!!
  7. JQ should be in an NFL camp RIGHT NOW! The kid should be an NFL player.....some team would be well served to bring him home from Canada. GREAT catch...seen that catch by JQ before it seems! GO JQ...making the Mean Green faithful proud! GO MEAN GREEN!
  8. If it is just a "mouth off" situation in the heat of battle, we'll probably see him back on the team before the first game...if it is something more serious well...yes, adios and thanks for the time you gave, but no place on this team for you...I hope it is the former and we see him back after a "time of penance". GO MEAN GREEN!
  9. BE STILL MY HEART...Hell has just frozen over! Just joking.....too bad the final result went 2-1 for Mexico, but still no big deal as far as the US qualifying for the World Cup...much bigger deal for Mexico. Still, it would have been great to see the US FINALLY win one at Azteca Stadium in Mexican City...oh well, it will have be wait until "next time"...and there will be a "next time". Yes, super goal by Davies.
  10. I was not unhappy to see it go...but based on some of the comments I read, I voted that it should be re-opened, BUT if it is...I for one hope folks "play a little nicer in the sandbox". I would hate for friends and members of the Mean Green Nation to get so upset with each other over the stuff that they keep calling folks "out" and using foul language (or the not so cute disguises for foul language) and calling one another names...a civil debate would be much better for all. Anyway, just my 2 cents worth. GO MEAN GREEN!
  11. I'm with you there OldTimer...and, might I add...GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING WITH UNT ATHLETICS! GO MEAN GREEN!
  12. Ok, I think the thread on this was removed when the "Non-UNT Sports" thread was deleted...but, even if not, it bears repeating. The Denton Chapter of the UNT Alumni Association is holding a golf tournament on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 12th with a morning tee time. The event will raise money for UNT student scholarships. Player cost is $125 which includes green fees, cart, goodie bag and lunch. And, the great thing about this tournament is that you can play free. Check out the tournament web site for details on how you can play free and help raise money for UNT scholarships. By the way...we are definitely looking for company, corporate and personal sponsors too. So, if you do not play golf and want to help students at UNT with some scholarship money, please check out the website: www.MiracleGolfConcepts.com and go to the UNT Tournament page. If you are interested in helping to sponsor a golfer with a small donation, you are certainly welcome to sponsor me...I have already signed up to play, but am also the Tournament Director. So, you can also PM me here if you have questions. I hope some of the GMG.Com Nation will help with this event and will help fund some scholarships. Donation of ANY size are welcome and appreciated. GO MEAN GREEN...GO ALUMNI!
  13. Point is...if you want to be "big time" you better start acting like it...and start by getting yourself and everyone else you can into the stands at Fouts this season. See you at Fouts. GO MEAN GREEN. And, stop blaming the fact that DFW is not like Stillwater...everyone can find a reason why they can't do something...I am asking you to find the reason why you CAN support UNT! GO MEAN GREEN...Fill Fouts Field for every home game in 2009!!!!
  14. Covers balding heads well too. Here's seeing you, kid!
  15. Nope, not yet. WOW, July...did not remeber it was that early last year. Great idea, but, like you, have heard nothing as yet. Should be another good year for JJ and the squad...fun times. GO MEAN GREEN! But, on the other hand...hard for me to even think about basketball right now as I await the Mean Green footbal 1st win of the year over Ball state in a few weeks....
  16. And, there in lies a major part of the problem..."fair weather fans". OSU has not been in the Top 20 on a regular basis through out the years, and has seen several "less than stellar" seasons in recent history. Yet, the fans still turn out and do not seem to "turn" on the program like UNT's "so-called" fans tend to do....when UNT fans "learn" how to be fans, they'll turn out even in the lean years. My bride and I attended that Cookout in TD's first year, and I do not recall there being 2000 in attendance..yes, many more than this year's event, but 2000 seems a bit on the high side. But, you could have it correct....so, where were at least 1000 of those 2000 this year???? Bigger town, bigger metroplex, food, kids games, 5K run, etc., etc. Where oh where are the fans????? Just so they show up at Fouts for the first and every other home game this season and beyond....BUY SEASON TICKETS and support the Mean Green. GO MEAN GREEN...Beat Ball State!
  17. OK, hang with me here...so, I am attending a reunion of some old Air Force buddies back in Missouri last week and decide after it concludes to drive to Stillwater for Sunday evening before heading back to Denton. I get there, check into the hotel on campus (very nice by the way), and decide to walk by Boone Pickens Stadium on the way to Eskimo Joe's for a burger and a beer. As I walk past the very impressive stadium and all the new work going on (yes, the construction work is continuing in spite of what you may have read about it halting due to Boone's "losses" in the current economy), and there is a sign for "Fan Appreciation Day" starting at 5PM...I thought it was for Sunday, but it took place the evening before. However, Sunday was the first day of practice in pads for the Cowboys and the public was invited into the practice area for the first hour of practice (and will be allowed into the fenced in practice area every day at 4:45pm until school starts next Tuesday for the 1st hour of practice). Let me tell you, those boys are fast and BIG! Anyway, practice was fun, but the purpose of my post is to compare the fans attitude toward OSU's pre-season "meet and greet" to UNT's... OK, let's set the stage...OSU has close to the same umber of students on it's main campus as UNT, the city of Stillwater is about 1/2 the size of Denton and both cities are about the same distance from the "larger cities" nearby (OK City and Tulsa vs Dallas and Ft. Worth). Pop. in Dallas/Ft. Worth is, of course, larger than that of OK City/Tulsa. So, let's see UNT has about 350 or so fans show up...UNT provides food, music, games for the kids, talks by AD and Coaches, player autograph table, season ticket pick up, etc., etc. From what I could gather at OSU...no food, no kids games...BUT...how many people show up on a Saturday evening...... 7,500 plus. They shut the line off at 7PM but hung but Coach Gundy, QB Zach Robinson, WR Dez Bryant and others hung around for the autographs until everyone got through the line...they had 4 stations set up with different players for autographs and questions/answers. They also had the soccer team there for the meet and greet and autograph session and some folks just wanted to talk to the Lady Cowgirls...go figure. They even held them past "feeding time...yes, they were called to dinner at 7PM, but stayed until everyone got through the line to "meet and greet"...event was inside Gallagher Hall (basketball arena) and the line ran out and around.... This for a team with a history of being a "step child" even in Oklahoma...no great population center itself. Folks, this is what should be happening at UNT... 2500 - 3000 fans should have been in attendance at the Kickoff-Cookout not 350. The fan base has just got to find a way to "get over" past history and help this team and program move on. In fact there were about as many people watching the 1-hour Sunday practice as UNT had at it's Kickoff-Cookout. Sure...lots more money at OSU right now and bigger staff, etc., etc. But, OSU is not the most fan friendly place you can imagine...a guy I was talking to was complaining that you had to buy season tickets if you wanted a ticket to the opening season Georgia game at Stillwater. No season tickety...no Georgia ticket. I think they did that with the home game with OU last year and folks are still grumbling. In fact, with seats left, OSU did not open single game ticket sales for the OU game last ywear and has no plans to open up single game tickets for Georgia...and the paper said season ticket sales are about 10% less than last season! So, not all is love and kisses at OSU or any other place, yet 7500+ show up for "fan appreciation" day in Stillwater. That is showing your support...and what do you think the busibnesses in Stillwater and especially around the campus thought of "fan appreciation day"? They were packed! Restaurants, OSU clothing shops, gas stations, hotels, etc., etc. all reported great sales.... That, my Mean Green fan friends, is where UNT is heading, but it needs fan support to get there. OSU did not get there over night...a few years ago they had about 1000 show up for a similar event and they thought they were doing good...and yes, they have been winning a bit more lately and are ranked #11 going into a seson opening game with #13 Georgia...but, it didn't happen over night...and the road was not smooth for the fans. UNT is on the same path if you ask me, and the fan base needs to pick it up a bit to help make it happen even faster...a little support from the business community wouldn't hurt either. THis will be a great time to be a member of the Mean Green nation...GO MEAN GREEN...BEAT BALL STATE.
  18. Hey, great motivation...that's the good news here...if you can't get motivated to proved this a "pile of do do", then you just shouldn't be playing team sports. If I were Dodge and Co., I would have this plastered all over the locker room and would mention it often. Could be the motivation that will help the Mean Green get out of the gate with a fast start and early wins. Again, opinions are worth what one pays for them...just like those here on GMG.com. Everyone has 'em...they come fairly inexpensively and fairly often. GO MEAN GREEN!
  19. OK, for all you folks out there who say the Alumni Assoc. doesn't do anything and who were not aware (because you must have been asleep) of all the things the Denton Chapter has been doing the last few years....check out the "watching party sites"...nice, and "thanks" to the Alumni Assoc. for setting this all up for Mean Green fans across the area.. So, if you are not in Denton and at the Pourhouse, you have options. Thanks Alumni Assoc. GO MEAN GREEN!
  20. I have been out of town a few days and away from GMG.com....I probably shouldn't ask if anyone noticed...but, this is an interesting thread...some pretty decent comments. It does go with what I have been saying and thinking about a few of our friendly GMG.com posters for some time. Yes, people other than GMG.com "crazies" read this board, and I do believe (being probably a wee bit older than many on the site) that what some folks post is not only disrespectful to other posters, and staff, but is just down right mean and would not happen if the statement was made "face-to-face". Maybe we should all give that a thought and "think" a bit more with our brains (yes, we all have them) before we type. I do not mean all the negative posters and the "doubting Thomas-es" have to turn to the KRAM1 school of positive thinking, but perhaps just think a bit more and re-phrase some of the messages to be a bit less "personal". Anyway...interesting thread...and everyone will be more positive after the win at Ball State by the Mean Green! GO MEAN GREEN.
  21. WHO CARES...this is a non-issue.....
  22. What FFR and Flyer said...I'm out of town and saw this on a hotel computer...drinking too much beer to spend more time on this, but Brett...you have to be kidding me. The first part of the link is just plain bad info...some would say lies...get real. And to Silver Eagle and his AARP "crap"...I too got that from AARP...but, unlike Silver Eagle, I understand why AARP is taking the position they are...in recent years AARP's management has been quite open in supporting "health care reform" and has moved left a good bit in its leadership and thinking. So, while reading AARP's "stuff" and their position, you have to understand that AARP is not "fair and balanced" in their inner circle and leadership. Not saying they are "liberal nut cases" at all...just understand they are working on the left side of the equation. Believe what you want...socialized medicine, hower, is BAD. The federal gov't has never run such a program in a efficient manner...never will...it is not the nature of gov't to do so...it will cost more, provide fewer benefits and lead to rationing of care. Bank on that...go for it if you will, but understand what you want...and be VERY careful...you might just get it. I, too, have friends from England...one has moved here while family remains in England...parents are in the late 60's-early 70's and they HATE their socialized medical care...long lines, refused care, refused procedures, higher and higher taxes, etc. The younger one's in the family...early 30's and below do not have as much of an issue with the sytem...wonder why? They seldom use it! Go figure.
  23. Oh, don't go there quite yet....the GOOD THING here is that it now opens up and opportunity for another player (Outlaw perhaps) to step up and gain experience that he would not have gotten should the appeal been granted for Tyler...then when Tyler joins the team next season, everyone is saying what a great decision for the Mean Green it turned out to be...more years for Tyler and another WR with great experience to "double up" and to push Tyler to be even better. Let's just see how this turns out...might just be a GOOD THING HAPPENING FOR THE MEAN GREEN after all...I choose to find the silver lining in this cloud of bad NCAA decision making.....
  24. Not so fast...think Outlaw....and from what I have seen, there are some pretty good receivers on this team that can add a long threat. This is a "bad deal" from the NCAA and I totally agree that if he had transferred to OU from UNT instead of vice versa for the very same reason, he would be suiting up for the Sooners this year. But, that's the hand UNT was dealt...so, go with it and make it work...think Outlaw...when you see him play, I think you be "less concerned" about this obviously bad decision from the NCAA. GO MEAN GREEN!
  25. Of course...how dare someone say something enthusiastic or positive about something related to Mean Green football. What must they have been thinking? You know, if you are a "true" Mean Green fan, you cannot get excited about the approaching season or say anything positive about players, coaches, prospects, etc. I mean, what could Harry have been thinking to post something positive about a late signee that looks like a very good catch? Gee, how out of charater for a "real" fan of the Mean Green. SCARCASM APTLY IN PLAY!!!
