  1. And all the soccer fans of the world are breathing a sigh of relief! Just kidding. Some day you will learn to appreciate the "beautiful game"....maybe.....never say never...I, too, once said I would never go to another soccer game...WRONG. man, am I glad too...you just never know....got any kids, JD? One or more just might like soccer and then...wham...there you go!
  2. Perhaps because the area is not quite as "controlled" as it is at the football stadium...but, I really do not know...feel free to give them a call and ask. The folks in the dept. have been very responsive to my questions about this matter.
  3. I am thinking at this point that Mean Green fans will be pleasantly surprised by the play of Mr. Outlaw. GO MEAN GREEN.
  4. I just knew someone would complain about the "good news". Thanks John Denver for upholding the tradition of UNT "fans" always finding something to complain about even with good news. (side note...yes, tailgate without beer is not my idea of a good tailgate...but it is a tailgate all the same...it's hard for me...and maybe you...to believe, but there are even some folks out there who do not like beer. Imagine how sad for them that is....Beer = Food of the Gods).
  5. Just got the word...BOTTOM LINE...GREAT NEWS... TAILGATING IS ALLOWED AT HOME SOCCER GAMES... Just no alcohol. The problem at last Sat. evening's game with the tailgaters was a bit too much alcohol... SO TAILGATE AWAY AT HOME SOCCER GAMES...Just leave the booze out of it. Good to know...GO MEAN GREEN. I hope the soccer parents get the word..perhaps the "power" of GMG.Com will prevail once again or UNTDude might just pass it along.... GO MEAN GREEN...GO MEAN GREEN SOCCER!
  6. If I can get my lazy rear end up early enough to do my 5 miles before the 8:15am scrimmage start I am hopeful that i will be there...count my bride out...no way she gets up and ready that early on a Saturday morning for a scrimmage... It is at 8:15 at Fouts, right?
  7. Flyer, I hate to be the one to tell you this....BUT you are no where near the age of SilverEagle!
  8. Nice to see this crap put to bed....as I said...and will stay with...when the final plans are completed and building starts we can get excited OR NOT over the stadium capacity...RV has said again the stadium capacity will be 30,000+. I hope that puts all this talk about "bait and switch", etc. to bed. BIG point...we need 30,000+ rear ends in the seats when the stadium opens...and, by golly, we could use 30,000+ rears in the stands at Fouts for the first home game this season. How about everyone here quit complaining long enough to make sure you are at Fouts for that first home game with several of your friends/family who have not been attending games? And, how about some of you folks here who admit to not going to games and not buying tickets to just "get over whatever it is" and give it a new try for the first game? You might find that the fun you have outweighs everything else. The atmosphere before and during the games is so much better than it was that you might just find that you really enjoy the Mean Green spirit once again. If GMG.com folks are so influential, as some here so indicate, then why not turn that influence into something positive like trying to fill Fouts for the first home game (and every home game for that matter)? What do you think? GO MEAN GREEN!
  9. So, who is comparing apples to oranges now? You cannot use "recruited as an athlete" in the discussion of his HIGH SCHOOL career. I will stand by my assumption that Riley can and should be rated as one of the best QB's to play HS football in Texas, and I think he would compare pretty darn favorable with every QB you have on your list...all of which were great Texas HS QB's...no argument there.
  10. You don't think Riley ranks as one of the best QB's ever to play the HS game in Texas? Really?
  11. See, we agree...you are right...the number of seats in a stadium does not define a stadium.
  12. I'll say that Riley comes out a bit nervous and throws a first quarter pick. The settles down and has a very nice day at 220 yards and two TD's. First game at the helm of a D-1 program, away game, lots of pressure being the first game, etc., etc. So a little nervousness is to be expected even for one of the best QB's to ever come out of the State of Texas. Don't know about the rushing yardage as I think he will try to "wing it out". I think gangrene may be pretty near the mark with his prediction of 56 yards. I hope it's well below 100 as that would mean to me that he is getting plenty of time to throw and is thinking "throw first, run second" and not the other way around. And, will tell me that he will handle the rush and pressure just fine. GO MEAN GREEN...BEAT BALL STATE!!!!
  13. HOV lanes are a pure waste! Yes, even in principle. However, if you are going to have them (federal dollars and all that) then, at least, be smart about it and open them up to all drivers during weekends and non-rush hour traffic times of the work week...and for God's sake...allow everyone to use them when an accident removes one or more lanes on a highway. A little common sense would help. And the folks...governament...who run these programs and cannot use any common sense...are the same type of bureaucrats who are wanting to run your health care program. WOW!
  14. Emmitt...agree, but there is another and more positive side to this quote...being a fan and supporter of UNT.... it's good to have grads in areas other than DFW for both recruiting and general support. I did not take this quote to mean that he was "happy" to get away from Denton or UNT. Rather that he loved UNT while there, still does, but is a Houston guy "born and breed" and has strong ties to Houston. OK, it's beyond me why anyone would want to live in Houston given free choice to live elsewhere, but at least it's still in Texas. Just kidding ... all you Houston folks don't get offended...
  15. My wife and I saw Dylan in Dallas...acoustic guitar and a chair on stage...That's all...he actually sounded terrible in person...the guy really has never been able to sing well...his greatness lies in his thought processes for writing and the sounds he gives to his songs. As a vocalist, he leave a very great deal to be desired. If you think he is a tad "rough" on his albums and records you should see him do a live acoustic guitar concert...a one-man show. Wow...loved the event, loved seeing Dylan in person but came away saying never again unless he has some "backup"...Ha! GREATNESS is correct...pure songwriting greatness "live and in person".
  16. Amen to that! And, UNT has an able back-up in young Mr. Kokjohn. I am glad TD sees the need to take care of special teams players with scholarships. These guys, while not often the media darlings of the team, go a long way in helping the team win. Good for Mr. Davidson, good for TD (nice job and shows a good bit of class too) and good for future special teams "specialists". GO MEAN GREEN...Good things are happening for players on Coach Dodge's team!
  17. Update coming soon...have had several communications with the ath. dept. getting the full story...will let you know after I hear back from another source. I think you will be pleased with the answer from what I am hearing at this point. GO MEAN GREEN!
  18. Congratulatuions and welcome to the newest member of the Mean Green Nation. I trust Mom is doing well as she did all the "heavy lifting" here....GO MEAN GREEN...Go EagleD II ...
  19. Some of my best "early" pro football memories revolve around when I was a "member" of the "Dallas Texans Huddle Club" as a youngster. I remember one game in the Cotton Bowl where it was so cold that my Dad actually started a small fire in the stands (yes, he sure did) to help keep us warm, and then one game with so few fans that the team came into the stands to shake our hands! I loved the Texans and wanted them and not the Cowboys to stay in Dallas. When Lamar Hunt lost the coin toss, it was a bad day for me...I recall a Texans/Houston Oilers game going to overtime, I recall the NY Titans and the Boston Pats...man, great days in the Cotton Bowl. Love the helmet...where in the world did that come from? Have always had a bit of a soft spot in my heart for the Chiefs knowing they were Lamar's team and were once the Dallas Texans...man, that EJ Holub (spelling) could hit and Abner could run...such great memories.
  20. That is definitely not automatic...there are many college grads in all branches of the armed services that are not officers...some by choice, some not. He would have to be selected, upon his enlistment, for Officer's Candidate School first...and depending upon his major at graduation...he may or may not be selected. Just because you are a college grad does not guarantee that one goes to OCS. Other routes to Officer status are ROTC and one of the Service Academies...West Point, Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Kings Point and/or Coast Guard Academy. Another way is to enlist, serve a few years in the enlisted ranks and then apply for OCS...after, of course obtaining that college degree. In this case, your major is not that big of a deal. There may be other ways to officer ranks, but those are the ones I can think of at this moment...I went the AFROTC route while in grad school at Okla. State U. I wish him all the best...God speed and good luck.
  21. What?????????????
  22. Lonnie; You make some excellent points and your position seems to be very well thought out. But, and I am not trying to slam you here at all, it seems some of your positions might be a wee bit self-serving. "Staying on the outside" does not, in my book, mean that you cannot or will not attend events, buy season tickets (I have no clue if you buy tickets or not), become at least casual friends with decision makers at the university, etc., etc. Your support of UNT is definitely not to be questioned by me or anyone else. However, you can only be "sucked in" and have a "different view" than you do if you let yourself be "sucked in". Staying away only gives you the "outsider view". Why not opt for both and perhaps get a different perspective on some things? Anyway, I definitely respect your views, but think if you would "engage" a bit more you may find that things are actually not all "doom and gloom". Anyway, I, for one, appreciate your support for UNT no matter what position you want to take on current "affairs". I just hope you will be "open" to seeing the positives that I think will happen this season with Dodge and Co. As to Craig Miller...good points, but again, I have a bit of a different take on this and seem to line up more with Green Dozer. Craig Miller does himself nor his employer any good knocking his Alma Mater all the time. He should have listened to his mother when it comes to UNT as she certainly told him "if you don't have something kind to say, don't say anything"...If he thinks OU is so great, well...good for him. Great school...great athletic program...BUT, he graduated from UNT...NOT OU. In my book, his constant knocking of his Alma Mater makes him pretty much a jerk. He is using his quasi-radio personality status to knock the school where he graduated and where he developed the connections that got him to where he sits today. What has OU done for him???? It's easy to support OU (when they are winning...do you recall what he was saying when OU got beat by OSU and several others a few times in the lean years???? Not so vocal about his love for all things OU as I recall during that time. The guy is a "fair weather fan" at best and a plain jerk (about UNT I mean) at worse. Trying to defend his stand on UNT is a lost cause in my book. To me, he is a "who cares" on the local radio scene. GO MEAN GREEN!
  23. OK, so my wife and I are sitting in the stands watching the game. There are some UNT fans outside the stadium at the end nearest 35W when some campus cops come up and it appears they tell them to put out the grill and that they cannot tailgate. The young lady sitting next to us who is/was associated with the soccer program told us that a group of parents wanted to tailgate before the game and they were told they couldn't...only tailgate allowed was at football games. WHAT IS THAT??????? Are you kidding me? I can understand if they couldn't light up a grill...OK, so be it, but how about sandwiches, chips, beer and sodas???? No fire danger there, right? If the info I received is true...shame on UNT for finding yet another way to discourage fans and to stamp out enthusiasm for UNT athletics. This is VERY hard for me to understand...and I will definitely check into the info I got from the young lady to see if it is true or not...there just has to be another side to this story. There often is...I do so hope there is to this one. Good grief. Anyone here have any additional info on this???? If this is true...it is plain STUPID! And, one of the things that just keeps people from getting into UNT athletics and becoming real fans who buy tickets and make donations. Go figure...but, we'll see. Unless someone from the athletic dept. who knows the full story wants to post a reply here, I will let you know what i find out...at least to those who care... GO MEAN GREEN!
  24. My bride and I went to the game Saturday evening. All in all, I would have to say that I was a bit disappointed in our progress so far in the season. By the second half UNT looked tired and "beat". While there were a couple of "near misses" and good runs in the second half, I thought UNT "packed it in" a bit early. The goal TCU scored on a second half corner kick (I am not 100% sure that it shouldn't have been a trow in for TCU...thought UNT's keeper got to it before it crossed over the end line...but, I digress) was very poorly defended by the Mean Green. Yes, TCU has a good team and, yes, they have a game under their belts already and an extra week's practice, but I expected to come away with a Mean Green win. So, am a bit disappointed. UNT looked slow to me in defense and were often seen with one attacker trying to go against three TCU defenders. Defense looked sluggish at times and had to make some plays on what should have been routine defensive moves. Offense pretty anemic all evening. Why no off sides trap EVER??? I know Coach Hedlund is not a fan of the off-sides trap, but TCU was playing into that opportunity for the Mean Green all evening. The Mean Green defense just seemed to "back up", "bunch up" and just try to kick the ball away...gave TCU way to much respect and room at the top of the box all evening. OK, that being said...Coach Hedlund played probably 20, and got to see several new players...did see a bit of speed up front at times and saw some decent early season passing...but way too often right up the gut and into the strength of the TCU defense instead of wide... Again, it is early. And, I think this team has the chance to be very good. I expect them to compete for the SBC crown again. Once everyone has the chance to play together and get their feet under them (looked like TCU was the much better conditioned team) I think we can expect to see some quality football and some big wins from this team. It was good to see Rick V. at the game too along with a fairly decent early season crowd...not a big big crowd of course, but more than I expected to see....the crowds will get bigger as this is going to be a good year for the Mean Green soccer program. GO MEAN GREEN. Great way to spend part of a Saturday evening in Denton.
