  1. Another thing UNT must accomplish is to somehow get its fans and supporters to stop badmouthing the program all the time. That and increased season ticket holders, Mean Green Club members, Alumni Association members and overall donors to the program could help a bit as well. Amazing how added support can often help the wins come and keep coming. I just think the supporters of UNT can be their own worst enemy at times. Having graduated from three universities I can honestly say that I don't hear this from the alums and supports of the other two schools in near the magnitude that I hear it from the Mean Green Nation. Neither of the other two schools can be considered football "powerhouses" in their own right either as both have times of major struggle. UNT is building in the right direction and plenty of positive progress is being made. It is true that wins must come on the football field and come on a consistent basis for UNT to garner the recognition it craves on the local, state and national scenes. Those who say winning cures everything are not wrong, but there is just a bit too much of the "it's everyone else who must step forward and then I'll support the program" still around UNT these days. For the life of me I cannot understand the "I cannot be proud of UNT" mentality. Hopefully, more wins will come this season, we'll have a great Fouts Farewell Tour season, the new stadium will open and folks will start feeling much better about the progress being made. The "show me" attitude is not dead and has some validity, but I think there has been plenty of "showing" being done in the last few years by RV and Company and that now it is time for the Mean Green faithful to do whatever they can on an individual basis...however big or small it matters not...to help keep to momentum moving forward. It can start with a great turnout for the Kick-off cookout this year on August 21st. See you there! GO MEAN GREEN!
  2. Agree. You knew what you were going to get with Spain and they did not disappoint. However, it makes for a fairly predictable game and not a lot of fun to watch at times...unless, of course, you are a big time fan of the Spaniards and their style of play. Can't take anything away from them as they were clearly the better side yesterday. I just wish the game was a bit more "user friendly", so all the "I don't like soccer" folks who were watching would have enjoyed it a bit more. If you don't know what's going on between the two styles of play, I can imagine that you were not overly excited about the final. Pretty rough game, but also a bit too much "playing for the ref in the hopes of drawing a foul". Too many cards...but the ref did let 'em play as there could certainly have been a few more red cards handed out for the stuff going on. Messy game. OK, four years from now we get to do it all over again...can't wait for the world's biggest game to hit the world's biggest stage once again. Next time...USA...USA...USA...USA!!!!!!!! You heard it here first!
  3. Why is anyone surprised? Guy just showed his true color...it's all about "me me me" in LeBron's world and Stern and pro basketball gets the credit by developing pro basketball into a "personality cult" rather than a professional team league. To remain relevant and compete for the sport's dollar Stern created this monster of egos. LeBron is just the latest creation. Some 18 or 19 year old, now un-named, will soon take his place and make LeBron's ego look like a school girl's. Pro basketball may go the way of professional wrestling if this trend continues for many more years. The circus has arrived in Miami. Miami should be known as Wade's team. If it is, how long will LeBron last in Miami when he isn't seen as "king James" any longer but rather a court jester in Wade's realm? May be really interesting to watch.
  4. Rick, Your Mom, you and your family continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.
  5. But you continue to read this thread...interesting.
  6. So, Lifer, have you learned nothing at all during the Cup? I know you like to watch the games, but are just trying to keep up the charade. You know, for all your buddies who can't figure it out because the players do more than just stand around for 3+ hours. So you want a 0-0 draw so it can go to PK's after two 15 min. extra periods????? Man, you must love the game to want it to last even longer than normal.
  7. I mentioned it at the time to my son (former college goalie and current ref when not on duty) that it would be a certain yellow only for dangerous play if I was doing the center in that game as I saw no "intent" at all in the play (even on the many replays). However, OUCH! That had to hurt. I did not think the player was intentionally trying to kick the opposing player, but rather tyring to make a solid play on the ball. If I noticed any...any intent at all I would throw the red in a heartbeat!
  8. If that's the case, how would BYU ever recruit?
  9. Oops sorry...should have said "never won" not "never played"...appreciate the good catch CBL...thanks! GO ORANGE!
  10. Just a little bump to keep this event "top of mind". Don't let the rain or the possibility of rain keep you away this evening. It's a good spot to stop off, get dry and visit with other Mean green nation members. And, to ask RV a question or two about the stadium and/or the upcoming season. Hope to see some of our GMG.com posters in attendance this evening. GO MEAN GREEN...GO ALUMNI...GO MEAN GREEN CLUB!
  11. Well, so now we have the finals set. The "South American World Cup" turned pretty much into a European World Cup after all was said and done. Two team who have never made the finals will get a chance to win the Cup on Sunday. Spain absolutely deserved its win over Germany yesterday as the Germans were clearly outclassed by the Spaniards. A bit of a surprise to me was how much Spain dominated the game as if the Germans were "afraid to lose" instead of "out to win". But it will be interesting against the surprising Dutch. I would love to see the Dutch win, and I do think they have a good chance of doing just that as Kuyt and Robben are playing the leadership roles for the Dutch. They handled Brazil and the pressure that brings, so they should not be afraid of the favored Spaniards. On the other hand, how do you bet against David Villa? I am not sure that Villa is not the player of the tournament. So, for me, I will be pulling for the Dutch to win the World Cup Sunday...what say you?
  12. yep! +1 FOR THE FOLKS WHO GOT THIS GOING!
  13. We should have at least one of the items we are planning to sell this season available for the Mixer. Hope to see you there on the 8th!
  14. Many many Thanks, harry...great site and a wonderful way for the Mean Green nation to suport the program. It is a "must join" site for all Mean Green fans! Mark
  15. White, Green, SOW, no SOW, Flying Worm...I don't care...let's just WIN in whatever color or logo combo selected. As long as UNT is playing in the uniform, I like them (except maybe for those black things some "un-named" coach stuck out there one game!). I'm betting we'll see a different look to open the new stadium...don't know if it will debut this season or not...maybe at the K State game as the last at Fouts...you know, out with the old and in with the new sort of celebration. Heck, play naked...just start a winning tradition.
  16. OK, you are either joking or there is some challenge here...you won't eat animals but you'll shoot them????? Oh, maybe that NRA membership is just so you can shoot people. OK, so your comment was just an example, but i found it humorous. Teaching your kids to judge other people because they eat meat???? How does that jive with your religious beliefs? The "judge others" part that is...just checking. I love how people like to tell others what they should and should not do...and then teach their kids to be just as judgemental. Nice! Somehow I think you just must be kidding. I have been to more athletic events than I could ever count, and very very rarely have I expericed people so drunk that they are disturbing others and keeping others from enjoying athe event. I realize this happens, but lots of stuff happens when people lose self-control. Heck, some even vote for folks who want to control your personal liberties. Who knew? OK, bottom line here...alochol or no alcohol, I'll be there to support the Mean Green. If alcohol ever gets allowed in the stadium perhps they could set up a "family section" as in some other stadiums where they don't sell alcohol so those so opposed to it can sit with others of a like mind. P.S. I love hot dogs and I think man vs Food is pure funny-ness! I can't imagine trying to eat like that, but I love seeing some of the interesting places the guy goes to eat...also like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives! Pure neat-ness! I plan visits to areas around those shows sometimes...Greatness. JohnDenver, I am 10judgmentalexperienced0% behind you in your trying to raise your kids the way you want them raised. You don't want to eat meat or have them eat meat...great for you, but please don't try to set up some little "holier than thou" mini-me's to go out and judge everyone else for eating meat. By the way, do you guys wear leatheperhapsr shoes???? Maybe it's not the killing of the animals you don't like, it's just the eating part, right? OK, more steak and hot dogs left for me to consume and all the "people to be judged" just like me out in Mean Green tailgate land.
  17. To my knowledge, there is no NCAA prohibition against beer sales.
  18. +1 for you, Sir!
  19. Man, it has been awhile since we have seen UNT picked this high in the 'Belt. Great to see...good things are happening for UNT football. GO MEAN GREEN!
  20. I like beer. I also like the revenue it brings. The "problems" associated with the possible sale of beer can be handled. However, I understand the only place to buy beer in the new stadium will be the Club Level seating area. No more Mean green Club area like the current pavilion.
  21. A firm grasp of the obvious. Thanks for the insight, Pal. However, not all are "clearly labeled" as you mention. Even this one seems to be turning into an expansion thread. Too funny!
  22. Thanks...now I am getting even more excited about the season...count 'em down Danno! Go Mean Green!
  23. Yes, 1000 times yes...please God! The season cannot get here fast enough. Where is the countdown clock????? GO MEAN GREEN. Come to the Alumni Mixer on the 8th and talk with RV about football and snag some schedules, cups, etc. And while you are at it...pick up some Alumni Association info and consider joining. IF already a member, take it to a friend and alum and ask them to consider joining. Hope to see you on the 8th at Fox & Hound in Lewisville...kick-off is 6PM. Come on in when you get there.
  24. UGH! Agree...+1 for you, Lifer!
  25. Wow, when did you start following UNT football and athletics? "Fry bet the farm and lost"????? Kidding, right? Fry was not the reason UNT, as you say, "had its athletics set back a quarter of a century". Revisionist history at play here....Let's not look at the administration, board or support levels at all...just blame one of the most successful coaches in UNT history. Fry would have been more than happy to stay at UNT if the support from the administration and fans had been there. Let's not compare what the programs at Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, etc. were like in the mid-to-late70's to where they are today. At the time, going independent was a good move by Fry and it payed off with some of the highest profile wins in the history of the program. Fry's teams were fun to watch and played from start to finish. I don't blame Fry for packing his bags and heading to Iowa. If UNT had given him half the support Iowa gave, he would have stayed with UNT. He loved it here, however, he was smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall when it came to long-term support for his program and athletics in general at UNT at the time. Sorry, ColoradoEagle, appreciate your support for the Mean Green, but cannot agree with you assessment of Fry and his UNT program. Fry wanted UNT to "move up" and build a nationally recognized program, and he had the ability to get it there, just not the support.
