Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! It is a great time for the Mean Green Nation to stop and take stock of all the things we, as fans of the Mean green, have to be thankful for these days. If you really stop and think about it for awhile I would think that even the most pessimistic among us can find plenty of good thing going on at UNT to be thankful for when all is said and done. I, for one, feel blessed to have been able to get to know so many members of the Mean Green Nation, both in person and through GMG.com. We all share one thing and that is our support for the Mean green and for UNT in general. I am proud of the progress UNT is making and it seems to me that even more progress is on the way. So, take a moment this week to think about the good things happening at UNT and to enjoy your association with the institution and the fans that support its programs. I hope to see many of you at the game Saturday. Here's wishing each and every one of you a very happy Thanksgiving to be celebrated with family and friends. GO MEAN GREEN!

My bride and I will be there to say good-bye to Fouts and to cheer for the Mean Green and it's seniors in their last home game. We have fond memories of times spent at Fouts, but are sure looking forward to new Mean green memories in that new stadium across the street! SEE YOU SATURDAY...GO MEAN GREEN! BTW...I'm thinking about 17-18,000...I hope more!

Folks, I think it's time for "new direction" in the DC position. I have just not seen the improvement in the D that a DC as experienced as DeLoach should be expected to make year over year. Great coaches make marginal players better and make good players great. You have to work with the hand you are given, and since DeLoach does not get involved in the recruiting process (until a kid is on campus for a visit), he has no room to complain, in my opinion, about the hand he is given. I know that OC's and DC's from other programs do not recruit "out of town", so it is not only DeLoach, but when your program is down like UNT's has been, well, part of your job, again in my opinion, is to get out and do the extra stuff (including recruiting) that it takes to bring the program back to winning consistently. I still think DeLoach may have come back to UNT to get a few more years in the retirement system so he can retire. I have just not seen the same Gary DeLoach that was the DC the first time around at UNT. I am in no way saying that DeLoach is not a good DC. I am just saying it didn't work this time at UNT and if he wants to stay in coaching he should probably look elsewhere. Sometimes you just cannot go home again. I think is a prime case in point. I wish him well, and, if he chooses to continue to coach, some other school could do a lot worse than hiring Gary DeLoach. Maybe the new scenery will re-ignite his passion for coaching...and recruiting that we have not seen at UNT this time around. I wish him well...at his next school.

This I like...well said. Bottom line: 1) UNT will have a new HC soon; and 2) Some will like the hire, some will not. Stating the obvious can, at times, be fun....GO MEAN GREEN!

I spent many a great fall afternoon at Fouts and will remember those times for the rest of my life. I also spent a few Saturday's with the "old girl" that I would just as soon forget. But, for me, this Saturday will mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new one for the Mean Green. Here's hoping the Saturday's spent going forward in the new stadium will also be special and memorable ones for Mean Green fans everywhere! And, let's hope the new stadium will be packed for every home game in support of the Mean Green. That's a new tradition I think we can all support! GO MEAN GREEN!

You knew, just like the rest of those who actually support this program through "good times and bad". Silver, like you, me and a bunch of others have stood by this program through the good times and the bad, and I know we'll continue to do just that...the "good news" is that it seems to me that the "ship is beginning to right itself". So, it will be a lot more fun in the seasons to come.

When Is The Next Time Unt Will Be In A Position
KRAM1 replied to MizzouTigers's topic in Mean Green Football
To answer your question...any time UNT is in the market for a new head football coach, that's when. There will always...ALWAYS...be several good choices on the market anytime the need might arise. The better question might be, "when will UNT have the chance again to hire a great coach as their HC who is already on the staff and working hard to improve the program both on and off the field?" -
Wow...this has to be a record for me...this is the second post from Silver that I have to agree with 100% in the last week or so! This game's result has nothing to do with the enthusiasm I feel for Canales being our next HC. Silver said it perfectly when he said we either need this guy or one exactly like him. No one here will change the opinion of anyone else regarding their personal choice for HC, but to say Canales' chances just dropped to nothing due to this loss is really being "out of touch" with reality. Canales may or may not be our next HC, but it will not be based on a loss to Monroe any more than it would be based on a win over WKY. We will all soon know who will be the next HC of the Mean Green...let's just hope the guy brings a new DC with a new attitude along with him......

Could make for some very interesting moments. So much for the "wind advantage" and needing to pick which way you want you offense to head in two out of the 4 quarters. This could get very interesting. Sorry for the fans in the unused end zone and nearby seating! May just need to watch this. Anyone think they might try top move the game at the last minute?

There is no "if" and "The Dance" in the same sentence when talking about UNT. UNT will definitely be in the Big Dance. Only question is which regional? GO MEAN GREEN! I definitely agree with what you are saying here SUMG. Makes 100% perfect sense...all except that "if" part!

Mckinney Avenue Tavern Watching Party For The Kansas Game

Well, you may be short on the numbers against that KU crowd, but I know you can out shout 'em! Great job MeanJewGreen. Have a great time and let them know that UNT is no longer the "best kept secret" in the metroplex! -
Last evening I had the distinct pleasure of attending and helping with the UNT Alumni Association's Ring ceremony for UNT students eligible to wear class rings. The event was very well staged at the Gateway Center and included both a reception for those being awarded their rings and for the recipient's' guests. The food was excellent, but the best part was the Ring ceremony itself. While not all students receiving their rings attend the ceremony (help twice each year), those that did attend were treated a very special evening. It is done much like a "graduation" ceremony, with the recipient's name being called as they cross a stage to receive their class ring from the Alumni Association's Executive Director, Derrick Morgan. In addition, and prior to receiving their rings, the students and guests receive congratulatory remarks and a presentation on the history and meaning of the symbols on their rings. After all recipients receive their rings they are instructed as to the proper wearing of the ring before and after graduation, and all place the rings on their fingers at the same time. After all recipients have received their rings and have placed them on their fingers, the ceremony ends with the singing of "Glory to the Green". What a great evening it was! About 500 people attended and the place was packed. Parents and friends were cheering and clapping for their "student", photos were taken and a great time was had by all. This is a great event and one the Alumni Association presents twice each year. It is quite significant that attendees and guests continue to grow in number. You can be very proud of the work the Alumni Association is doing, and in how they are trying to connect with students while they are still "on campus" and attending UNT. If you get and invitation to attend, I would highly recommend that you do so. You will enjoy yourself a great deal and you will witness first-hand what YOUR Alumni Association is doing to help strengthen ties with its members and potential members. OK, on a different note...I want to say that the Alumni Association has a little over 8,000 active members at this time. And, while that number has grown every year for the past few years, it is still painfully low for a University as great as UNT. We can all speculate and discuss "why" this is so, but I can assure you that YOUR Alumni Association is doing all it can with a very limited number of staff and an even more limited budget to make you proud of YOUR Alumni Association. It does not cost much at all to become a member of the UNT Alumni Association. I really cannot see any valid reason for any graduate of this great nation of ours to not be a member of the UNT Alumni Association. With the new Alumni Pavilion being built near the new stadium, with communications with Alumni and prospective Alumni at all time highs, with many more local events and activities being planned and held (not to mention more out of area and state events than ever before), and with such premiere events at the UNT Alumni Association Ring ceremony, there has NEVER been a better time to join for the first time or to renew your membership with the Alumni Association. It takes member numbers and dollars to do what the Association has plans to do, so how much it can do is pretty much up to its Alumni. If you are not a member, please consider joining. If you are a member, consider the best financial deal going and that is the Lifetime membership. Please consider that one of the things that makes a great university great is the strength of its Alumni as directly measured by the membership in that Association. Any member of the UNT Alumni staff or UNT Alumni Association Board would be more than happy to talk with you about membership, and listen to why you may have not considered membership in the past. The "past" is behind us, and the future is looking brighter and brighter. Please take some time to consider this very inexpensive, but very beneficial way to help YOUR UNIVERSITY continue to move forward. Were you aware that one of the biggest factors in corporate donations is the size of a university's Alumni Association membership? True fact....Having hundreds of thousands of alumni in the state is great and that definitely helps, but when you then tell and AT&T, ExxonMobil or even "Joe's Shoe Shack" that active supporters of the Alumni Association number as little as the number of yearly graduates from the university, well, let's just say it can make for a less than pleasant few minutes of conversation. Think about it...give the Alumni Association a call, PM me, talk to any member of the UNT Alumni Association Board, but please give it serious consideration. You will probably spend on entertainment this weekend far more than an annual membership would cost. Why not consider a membership as a Christmas or Holiday gift to a fellow graduate? That would make a great present and would do a lot of good for you university as well. Ho-Ho-Ho and Go Mean Green!

I know lots of teams seem to go to pre-season tournaments each year like the Great Alaska Shoot-out, etc. OK, here's an idea I want to float. May be a pipe dream , but what about a pre-season tournament each year between UNT, TCH, UTA and SMU to determine Metroplex bragging rights for the year? Tournament could be held at either a neutral site or rotated between the campuses where each school hots (and makes the revenue off that) once every four years. I know, I know...hard to schedule, but don't you think it would be a home run for the fans and really set things up for the basketball season. UTA is building a new arena, so when it's complete, the tournament could be set up. What do you think? Anyone else think it would be Metroplex Basketball Madness????? Some of you who know the details of this to a much great extent than I ever care to know, chime in here and let's discuss this idea. It would be a "don't miss" event in the Metroplex I would think....what say you?

Seems to me that Coach Dickey took the Mean Green to the last few bowl games it has played in by focusing on conference wins. In fact, did the Mean Green not have a losing season one year when it went to the New Orleans Bowl after winning the SBC? I don't think the HC is responsible for the conference affiliation, but i think he is responsible for whether the team wins the conference or not. Like several other have said, I cannot get fired up about the SBC, but it is the Mean Green's home conference, and that in itself makes it important. No Mean Green HC in my time (other than Fry) has had much luck beating "bigger" out of conference foes. To say any Mean green HC should be judged on whether or not he beats OU, Texas, OSU, K State, Tennessee, etc. is really not living in reality. The Mean Green HC SHOULD be judged on his book of work in the SBC and other similar schools played from outside the SBC such as Rice, Navy, Army, Ohio, etc., etc., etc. Coach Canales is playing the schedule he has been given and he seems to be doing a pretty darn good job of creating some WINS for the first time in awhile. I could care less if others here want Coach Canales, Jim Leavitt, Mike Leach or the latest hot kid on the block as the next HC. It's all simply one person's preference over an other's. Each worth the same in "opinion value". There are a couple of opinions that do count and that would be RV, Pres. Laine and Chuck N it seems. They will do their job the best that they can, and UNT will have its new HC. And, guess what? That HC will probably be given a SBC schedule to work. I am pretty much thinking that SBC schedule is important, and that the next HC will be judged a good bit by what he is able to do against the other teams in the SBC. If TD had won the SBC and lost every other game, chances are, he would still be the HC of the Mean Green. Seems like that's pretty important to me. Don't discount what Coach Canales is doing against SBC competition. It would be foolish to do so and might set you up to be disappointed. GO MEAN GREEN!

CBL...what's with the water shot? All I can think of when I see that on every one of your posts is...Dueling Banjos and Deliverance. What's the deal? I may have missed it, but would like an "update".... -
Now, that's what I'm talking about when it comes to fan and student support. Students were fantastic last evening and the place was really nicely filled...7100+...George (or Hank...I don't recall) said it was the largest crowd in 30 years. I loved the fact that so many football players and football coaches were in attendance as well. Coach Canales told me last evening that he told the team that unless they had academic commitments, he wanted to see them at the game. This is one of the games to remember. Great to see the Tech fans walking out "head in hand" after so many had a few negative things to say about UNT. Shows what they know...I guess the news really doesn't get out to the sandy wasteland of Lubbock these days. Anyway, well done JJ and company. You guys rock! So, let's bring this crowd back for the Rice game next Tuesday! GO MEAN GREEN!

You are kidding, right? This kid was a very good running back when he hit the UT campus...I do not blame him in the least for looking after his health. What did Dodge have to do with this???? I agree, with the previous posters who have indicated that you might want to "give it a rest".

I do think you are wrong....I expect 7,000+ and a good to great student turnout. Should be great...see you there! GO MEAN GREEN!
