I certainly do not disagree at all with your comments. What I liked most about the comment from McCarney was the expectations part of it and the attitude of "Why not North Texas"? If he believes what he is saying (I I'll believe him until I see otherwise) then he will definitely start recruiting players being recruited by the big boys. He mentioned two players who had committed to UNT, but who were offered by a couple of the "big boys" late in the game. UNT retained both players thus beating a couple of the "big boys" this year (one could make that argument). People here on this board have complained for years that UNT was not even looking at the premier players in Denton and all over Texas, and that UNT was just "giving those players to the big boys". We'll, we now have a HC who says "Why not North Texas", and he, along with his staff, are going to do just that...compete against the big boys for local, state and national talent. Sure, may not get them all, or even very many at first, and might have to fall back on those guys whose other choice might be SFA, UT-SA, etc., but the emphasis will be on recruiting legitimate D1 talent that can win games and bowl games for UNT. That, my fellow Mean Green fans, seems to me to be, in itself, a positive move forward. GO MEAN GREEN!

The Libyian Situation
KRAM1 replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I would like to hear, now that Pres. Obama, has his very own war...can't blame Bush for this one...just what the heck the objectives are and how the heck anyone thinks you can win this thing without boots on the ground? Is this going to be the first armed conflict won by air power alone? I seriously doubt it. That "exit strategy" that our president kept asking for in his run to the presidency is certainly lacking here as well. Not knocking Obama here as much as pointing out the difference between running for president and talking about decisions you know very little about and actually having to make those decisions and live with the consequences. So, what's the exit strategy and what's the goal? We seem to be hearing different things daily from the oval office...our goal is to remove the current leadership of Libya to well, it may not be possible to remove the current leadership. Is this going to be another seemingly never-ending stalemate in the dessert? Don't know...too early to tell, but it has all the ear makes of another long drawn out conflict where mainly the civilian population suffers. Was it the right thing to do? Perhaps, but in my opinion the US and its allies waited way to long to act and lost the initiative. How can the US support a three front war successfully? Obama is the first president to try to handle a three-front war since maybe the Romans. I am just scatter-shooting here with some random thoughts on this situation. The US does seem to be trying to hand this over to NATO, but that would only place the US forces (who will still probably shoulder the burden of this front) under the command of potentially some other nation's commanding general, etc. Result for the American forces and US tax payer would be the same...as it has been in most NATO led actions. Too early....too many questions, but a concern for the US, its Allies and the people of Libya none the less. -
Funny, Matt...I edited it to change some spelling (I knew the Grammar Nazis would get me) and to add a rule I had forgotten to add in the original post. Pretty good catch on your part! See you Saturday! Thanks for supporting the event.

Mccarney Brings New Approach At First Practice
KRAM1 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
This guy just makes you believe again...believe "Why Not UNT"? Why not, indeed. Spring practice has started on a positive note and spirits seem to be high with the players and the fans. At the Mean Green happy Hour event last Tuesday, Coach Mac compared UNT to Boise State, and commented that he thought UNT was in a better position right now to make that sort of progress than was Boise when it started its run to success. Why not? Why the heck not UNT? I believe and I believe the Mean Green has started on its march back to wins and bowls games! Yes, I know...Green Kool-Aid drinking going on here, but you just can't be around the program these days and feel the change that has already been made and the positive attitude of everyone involved. The Green Kool-Aid is tasting a lot sweeter these days, and I think there is very good reason for that sweet taste. GO MEAN GREEN! Change is here...this change is very positive and the future is BRIGHT GREEN! -
I'm planning on attending as well...support from the Denton Chapter and the Alumni Board. Now, I just have to find the place. Ha!
-
OK, you guys were there on the committee so I bow to your first hand knowledge. Didn't think Trilli had much to do with it...thought the idea came from you guys. I liked Trilli...not Trilli the coach, but Trilli the person. Very friendly and nice every time I had the chance to talk with him. He did have a passion for the game, but just couldn't seem to translate the passion to on-court performance. Still, recall some memorable wins from some of his teams while the program was under his watch...just not enough.
-
Agree....but, please don't give Trilli credit for the green seats. That was an idea hatched by, I believe, the one and only greenjoe. If you look around the Super Pit wall inside you will find a plaque with the names of folks who donated money to get those seats replaced. Lots of folks donated to get rid of the orange "fire in the eagle's eyes" seats that were installed when the place was built. Check out the plaque and you'll see quite a few familiar names I would imagine.
-
Joe...I very much appreciate the kind words, but most of all I appreciate you and bride being there and supporting the Mean Green. Yes, I thought her question was a very good one too. Thanks for the support!
-
Silver...see the addendum to my post above regarding the Beaches comment. I have no doubt whatsoever that the comment was real and from the heart by Coach McCarney. You could tell by the way he sincerely answered my question about it at last evenings Mean Green Club Happy Hour. I also talked about it a bit more with him in person...no doubt the guy enjoys those movies and quiet times with his wife.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the deadline is fast approaching for getting in on the first brick paver order for the new Alumni Pavilion being constructed at the new football stadium. APRIL 30th is the drop dead date to get your orders in for pavers...and to get any friends, family members or fellow alums to get their orders in so they will be ready and installed by the opening of the new Alumni pavilion. http://untalumni.com/alumni_pavilion.php The attached link should direct you to a site where you can order a paver to be installed in time for the grand opening of the pavilion. Orders can be taken after April 30th, of course, but there would be no guarantee that they would be ready and installed in time for the grand opening of the UNT Alumni Pavilion. Pavers would make great gifts for graduates, family members who are UNT Alums, yourself, etc. Also, if you are not currently a UNT Alumni member you can join by simply going to: http://UNTalumni.com.

Sorry guys...rules published...rules remain as published. We have a limited time slot for the use of the gym...several other events before and after our slot...in fact the dance team is using the gym just prior to our use for "warm-ups" to a competition they are in this weekend. I think you will find that the time does not fly bay as quick as you think it would. Being in the shape that some of the players may well be in, it keeps us from having paramedics on site! :-) Besides, when you are dunked over two or three times, you might be glad the clock is running. HeHe....... This is going to be fun! See you Saturday. PLEASE...PLEASE...if you can, come out and watch this game. It will be even more fun if we have a nice crowd doing the cheering, yelling thing.

Green59....thanks for the kind words about last evening's event. I really had a great time and it was good to have so many coaches and RV with us as well. I think we had over 35 people in the room (not counting athletic staff and coaches) at one point, and I am told several new members were added to the ranks of the Mean Green Club last evening. How can you hear Coach Mac speak and not get fired up over the prospects for the Mean Green? That guy is the real deal, and we will definitely see the Mean green heading in the right direction starting this evening at spring practice. He makes no bones about what needs to be done, and he is setting the stage for the challenges that lie ahead, but what is great is his "WHY NOT NORTH TEXAS" attitude and the fact that he is dedicated to going after D1 level prospects that the "big boys" are also going after. He says we will recruit against the "big boys" not the 1-AA teams going forward. How refreshing is that to hear, and even better, to hear UNT not only competed with but beat some of the "big boys" in signing his first class. Thanks to everyone who turned out last evening...if I tried to name everyone I know I would miss so many. On a side note...did everyone notice how good RV looked in his new slimmed down self? I think he said he had lost about 40 pounds since December. The guy really did look good and he seemed very excited about the prospects for the program. Thanks again to all for your help and support with this event.

Nice...very nice, but that "Beaches" thing...I'm not so sure. Like the idea of romantic movies with the wife, however...in a job like Coach Mac has I would imagine that you would be gone so much that you have to grab whatever chance you have to enjoy some private time together. Addendum: At the Mean Green happy Hour I asked Coach mac about Beaches. He said "how do you know about that"???? Funny...and then he went on to explain the deal...very good comment about he and his wife and how they enjoy these things together. I later talked with Coach Canales and he confirmed that he and his wife also enjoy special times together like Coach McCarney does. These guys work long and hard hours and they know their wives and kids are special. Really great time last evening spent with several of the coaches and RV. Good stuff! The entire staff seems to be a very close knit group!

Would that be Austin Landscape Gardens? If so, I talked with your dad...nice guy! Thanks for the good work with the sponsors. You definitely get the "we" on this one and a +1 from me as well...will look forward to seeing you Saturday. This is going to be a lot of fun.
-
Seems to me that Coach McCarney is doing all he can to build the program and to make it "fan friendly". This is just another example in how Coach mac and his staff are trying to make supporting UNT easy and fun for everyone. So far so good, and I see absolutely no evidence that they guy will not maintain this fan friendly stance going forward. I do agree that it is up to the staff to hold open or closed practices as they feel is best for the team. Right now, they are open and I hope all who can will take advantage of the opportunity to watch a practice or as many as they can. Thanks Coach Mac! and....GO MEAN GREEN!

OK, things are looking great for the game Saturday. Should be ready to start the warm-ups about noon with a 1:00PM tip-off in the Gym at Mean Green Village. The gym is located where the Volleyball team plays its games. Should have stands for the fans, so please come out and watch the game, bid on the autographed football and basketball and join us for the after event at Metzler's BBQ right after the game. Metzler's is located on Londenderry lane in Denton. East to find from the playing site. We are in the final "push" stages for donations as well. We are now sitting at $320.00 in the Pay Pal account. That's only $180.00 from the PayPal site goal and well within reach by game time. Just need a few more members of the Mean green faithful who would like to help the UNT Cheer Squad to make a donation...any amount...large or small would be great and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. Hopefully, some folks have an extra $5.00 or $10.00 or whatever amount that they can chip in for a great cause. To those who have donated by credit card (PayPal), by check or in cash....you have my thanks and appreciation for your generous support. Our sponsors have been super as well... So far our business sponsors include: Metzler's BBQ (Title Sponsor) Voertman's Chicken Express Red Neck Heaven Cross-Timbers Gym Austin gardens landscape Fast Signs The Allen Wranglers UNT Athletics. Murray for Denton City Council Please stop by and say thanks to these generous sponsors, and frequent them whenever you are in need of a service or product that they supply. Hope to see you Saturday at the game. This is going to be FUN!

What's this "we"? You have a mouse in your pocket or something? Are you planning on attending to watch the action? Hope so. If so, I'll give you the "we" and tell you there is definitely going to be "celebrity" refs...Josh White, Shannon Shorter and Raquel Cuffie. That's UNT Celebrity in my book.
-
You obviously don't get it at all. It's not about who signed the ball, it's about supporting the UNT Cheer Squad.
-
Yes, I had a meeting with the players union and we are all set. I just said "beer is good" and tailgating will occur and they signed off on it in a heartbeat! Good to Go! By the way...it's a new 10 year agreement, so we are set for some time to come. None of this lockout/shutdown silliness will impede the playing of the GMG.COM BOWL!!!!! Not as long as I am commissioner as the players can always buy me off with a cold beer or two.
-
UNTFan23----EXACTLY! Just thought I'd put in the rules what usually happens anyway. I saw a prime example of just this "make-up call" thing during one of the NCAA games this weekend. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN! Now if we can only get your game day shirt in the correct size...just sayin'

GMG.COM BASKETBALL GAME Modified Rules (1.) There will be 4 quarters of 10 min. each (2.) There will be a 5 min. break between Quarters and a 10 min. break at half-time. (3.) The clock will operate as a running clock except when free throws are being shot and during the last 3 min. of the second and the 4th quarters. (4.) Free throws will be shot after 10 fouls by a team (of any kind) during each half. ONE POINT will be awarded to the team being fouled EXCEPT in the last 3 min. of the second and fourth quarters when fouls shots will be taken as appropriate with the clock being stopped during such foul shots attempts. (5.) Each player is allowed 6 fouls before being "excused" from the remainder of the game (any form of foul counts as one of the 6 allowed). (6.) Unlimited substitutions are allowed…clock running or stopped. The player being substituted for must leave the court before the new player enters if being substituted during play. (7.) 2 additional time outs are allowed for each team per half (this in addition to the time stoppages at quarter end and half). (8.) No arguing with the refs!!!!! You already know they have forgotten more about basketball than you probably ever knew, and you know you did it anyway. If you didn't, you got away with one or two earlier in the game. See it as payback!

Bunk In Bulk
KRAM1 replied to SilverEagle's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Sort of reminds one of some of the discussions on GMG.com. -
Absolutely...just PM me with the max. and I'll handle the bidding for you. I know what you mean about soccer duties...I have two games to referee before the basketball game that morning. I had to limit my schedule to two from the usual three each Saturday to be ready for the BB game in time. You go SOCCER MOM! All soccer moms rock. It isn't easy arranging multiple kids' schedules and the like. Send me your did in a PM and I'll take care of it. Thanks.

I'd bet that Green59 and SUMG are attending. Wish I could, but will try to catch as many as I can. Great to see that all practices are open to the Mean Green Nation!
-
Since when has this NOT been allowed? As "commissioner" I approve copious amounts...it might ease the aches before they even occur!
