Tressel Resigns
KRAM1 replied to DeepGreen's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I am predicting now that Pryor will be a NFL bust. Does he have the skills to make it in the NFL...yes, the physical ones, but his ego and attitude may just do him in. I guess we'll see. The NFL certainly will not care much that he quit on the Buckeyes nor for the situation under which it took place. -
Three Recruits Coming To Camp This Weekend
KRAM1 replied to All About UNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Bring 'em over to the GMG.Com Bowl 8 for a look at what used to be called UNT's home field. That should give them some perspective on where the program is now heading with the new stadium. Just sayin....might be a nice recruiting move. Plus they will see a bunch of folks helping to raise money to support the program...that can't be bad either, right? GO MEAN GREEN! -
Each and every time I heard Coach Mac speak, from the day he arrived, he has talked about the "undersized squad" UNT has at the moment. He knew from the start that UNT, as a rule, was a tad "undersized". Looks like he just now took the time to figure out on average just how undersized. I am sure this has something to do with player goals set for the summer conditioning program. Coach McCarney had most definitely already made this assessment. Maybe now he just put some actual numbers "on average" to the matter. Nice to have some goals for his players in the summer, right?

Gold Cup 2011
KRAM1 replied to Mean Green Matt's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Nice to see the futbol talk here on GMG.Com. I am in 100% agreement that the US needs to field it's strongest team possible and come out to make a statement in this game tonight after that complete and total disaster against Spain! What an embarrassment even with an undermanned team against Spain. The US squad was chasing the ball all day and leaving gaps in its defense wide enough for a Mack truck to drive through. Much like the Mavs Sunday leaving the lane open for LeBron to drive and dunk! I was stunned, stunned mind you, watching that disaster of a game against Spain. If you are a "soccer person", we can all try to understand the "whys" and the situation that led Bradley to play the way his squad did and to start the line up he did, but this was such a bad showing that I think any US fan in attendance should be given their money back for the price of their tickets. A good HS team could have played as well...OK, well a good Dallas-area Club U-19 team certainly could have played as well. Yes, Spain is the world champ, but they didn't even play their best squad. All I can say is, US squad was really poor and it was not all because Donovan and Dempsey were not in the lineup. Those that were certainly did not show "well" at all...in stretches the US looked OK, especially in the second half, but by then I ma Spain was simply playing to not embarrass the US squad any more than it already had. Very disappointed in this effort. The squad needs to come out "on fire" and mad as heck this evening against Canada...no, Canada is no Spain on the pitch, but the US needs a convincing win none the less. USA! USA! USA! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!!!! Score early, score often...USA! -
Well, I guess if you are going to do something like this, getting a $2 million grant is a good thing indeed. I assume that is $2 million of taxpayer dollars, so we'll at least have some tax dollars coming back "home". Will they be painted green and have the UNT logo or SOW on them? Hope so...any PR is good PR or so they say. GO MEAN GREEN!

Sorry to see the three leave. Sometimes it just doesn't work out, but was glad to hear coach say all three may remain students at UNT. Also good to hear the final 'ship has been awarded. I hope it is a "big guy" like a tackle or DE. Would be a big help and an even bigger one if the guy can play immediately. Love the focus on the classroom. After all...these guys are students first and foremost. Very few will play after college, and they need to understand that and take care of business in the classroom. Love that Coach mac sees this as a priority! Congrats on the spring grade report. GO MEAN GREEN!

June 6Th - D-Day
KRAM1 replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I am fortunate to have stood right on those cliffs at Pointe du Hoc. I actually saw them from the bottom where our troops started the climb and from the top where the German troops were waiting. Amazing that, with the equipment of the day and the weight these guys were carrying, that they were able to not only make that climb, but to fight so well after doing so. Amazing feat of courage. My thanks to your friend who actually made the climb. He has my deepest gratitude and everlasting thanks for a job well done. -
Today is the 67th anniversary of D-day. On this day in 1944 some 160,000 Allied troops landed on five beaches on the French coast in Normandy to attack the Axis forces in France and to begin the liberation of Europe. More than 9000 Allied troops were killed or wounded on this day 67 years ago. My wife and I have been lucky enough to visit American, British and German cemeteries in Normandy. It is a very moving sight and one in which you cannot help but become emotional. These young troops faced horrific fire from the German defenders, yet they pressed forward and would not be denied their objective. The people who live in the Normandy area have not forgotten these brave and honorable soldiers, it is too bad that the rest of the world seems to have pretty much forgotten. The Dallas Morning News had one little mention on page 14A this morning. We all owe much to those who fought in this war to preserve our freedoms and those of so very many others. Please take at least a second or two to pause and remember what took place on this day some 67 years ago. Most of those who participated have either died or are in their late 70's and 80's. It's not too late to look up a WWII vet and thank them for their service. May God bless them one and all and may they forever be honored for their service.

My thoughts exactly when I read through this thread. I keep thinking...you just have to be kidding me. This is what the off-season brings. So, let;s get back to some good Mean green nation fun...come out this Saturday for the 8th annual GMG.Com flag football game...tailgating allowed, and silent auction with some great stuff including Joe Greene autographed items. Lots of ex-players attending and playing this year as well. Oh, and I hope RV enjoyed the game. GO MEAN GREEN!

I agree, drex, but this is the way it goes in the coaching profession these days it seems. Non-revenue sports are no less immune to this than are the revenue producers it seems. Check with the golf, volleyball, etc. programs at UNT in the recent past. drex, what would be your "reward for years of service" in this case? Is RV simply supposed to keep coaches because they have been at UNT for a certain number of years? Coach Watkins has done a fine job, but like Tina Slinker, seems to have fallen back a bit in the results category in recent years. I hope RV finds a replacement more successful than "Ms 10 Feet of Heat", but, being on the outside, one really has no idea of what all the issues were/are behind this move. I personally hate to see Coach Watkins go...thought he did a great job with the program after it was turned into pretty much a cross country program (maybe due more to finances than anything else...who knows), but much like golf at UNT, UNT has decided, rightly or wrongly, that all its programs need to compete for championships. Do you know if Coach Watkins was offered any other assignment within the department? I have no clue, so am just asking if you know due to your inside info abilities.

You are correct, sir. Well done!

THIS! I see this all the time as I recruit men for the Merchant Marine Academy's soccer program. I have parents say they are already getting a scholarship from "XYZ" so really are not interested. I then see the coach on the field from that "XYZ" college, talk to him about how they handle scholarships and find that most are getting partials, some only books or help with housing and nothing guaranteed after the first year! Great! With the Merchant marine Academy it is 100% a full ride including books and housing and meals. A bit of a difference, and if you don't continue to stay on the soccer team, that 100% full ride stays with you! Yes, it is a "different" type of college, but it's a great education at a great price. Finances are very much coming into play these days with both men and women soccer players and their families. UNTDude's comments are "spot on" about our great local women's team players. UNT is poised to become one of the country's premier programs, not just one of the best in the area. GO MEAN GREEN...GO MEAN GREEN SOCCER!

This is on the football board???? Sorry to see this move, but I do think there is a move to get all of UNT's programs competing for championships every year. Track program seems to have fallen a bit "off" the last few years as WKY rose to dominance in the Sunbelt. With a new track facility in the planning stages maybe RV felt it was time to make this move. Good luck Coach Watkins...great job bringing the program back to where it is today after being neglected for Cross Country for so many years. Best wishes on whatever you decide to do next with your career. GO MEAN GREEN!

I believe the answer to this question is NO! Unless, of course, you have suite or club level seats. Alcohol will be available to purchase in the suite and club level areas...I darn sure hope not for $6 a bottle! YIKES!
-
Participants and spectators.... We do need a football or two...if you have a football around the house or can get your hands on one or two, please bring them along. We can use them for warm-up and the game itself. Thanks...wouldn't be too cool to show up to play a flag football game and have no footballs! ha!

Now, that, Sir is a training routine I can respect!

Protect your beer! Those grads may try to steal a few! The timing looks good...maybe everyone won't be trying to "come and go" at the same time the GMG.Com folks are trying to get in and out.

For participants and spectators alike...some logistics info for game day. GATE 1 (the gate that was nearest the Mean Green Club Deck) will be open by 1:00PM. We will set up tables for registration and the silent auction under the stands on the press box side so it will be covered and have a bit of shade. I have just been told that HS graduations will be going on in the Super Pit on June 11th as well...so plan parking accordingly. Hopefully, these will be "smaller" schools that will not take up the parking in the area we will be using, but just in case...here is your head's up. We can set up tailgating near that entrance (Gate One)...hey, if it's too hot...let's try to set up some under the stands in the shade....would the UNT cops run us out? Who knows? maybe best to ask for forgiveness rather than permission...ha! Bring lots of cold beverages and a wet towel or two might be nice as well...sunscreen is in order (hopefully we won't be faced with a rainy bowl game day) I should be on site by 1PM to set up, so you can register and pay your playing fee of $25, any donations you might like to add to the pot and start looking at the silent auction items and placing your bids around that time. We can accept cash or checks...no credit cards can be accepted. What else? Questions? Ask them here, and I'll do my best to answer so everyone might have the benefit of seeing both the question and the answer. Let's get ready to rumble!!!!!

There will be a "guest privilege" for Alumni Association members to bring in a certain number of guests, not an unlimited number. That number has not been determined as yet, but a "temp membership guest fee" will also be available for one time use for those with guests over the allowable number of "free" guest passes. As I understand it, there will be a grace period for the first game where the limits will not apply. The point is to have a place for Alumni Association members and their guests (up to a certain number free) to enjoy pre-game activities, food and drink (for purchase), watch games on big-screen TV's before UNT's kick-off, to relax and to enjoy mixing and mingling with other UNT Alums. Alumni Association membership is very reasonable and with the pavilion opening it makes good economic sense to join the Alumni Association.

Great job coach Hedlund. I hope you also saw the quotes about Coach Hedlund. UNT has a legit program and one that many schools would love to have. The DFW area is, indeed, a great recruiting ground for soccer players. I actually help recruit on the men's side for the United States merchant marine Academy located in Kings Point, NY. We sign one-three local DFW players every year. I cannot tell you how it breaks my heart not to be doing this for UNT. It is great that UNT's women's team has been built into a contender...I see no reason why this team is not in the NCAA's within a year or two! You go ladies! GO MEAN GREEN!

It is my understanding that the Alumni Pavilion will have beer for sale. Are you an Alumni Assoc. member? If not, I believe membership starts at $35/year. Well worth the cost for Alumni Pavilion entry...big screen TV's, food and drinks prior to the game...big porch area, etc. It's a great value for your membership dollars! GO MEAN GREEN!

One of our esteemed referees has spoken! We will have three referees this year...maybe even a fourth, so no monkey business this year.

I like! Can't wait...this beauty of a stadium just keeps getting better and better! GO MEAN GREEN!
