What does that have to do with anything? Don't recall ever giving you a lecture about your generation...I do recall you bringing up the generation thing, however. I'll assume you will decline to participate again this year as well. But, several of whatever generation you claim to belong to will, indeed, participate. However, i don't see what relevance this is to the current discussion. Still waiting on your reply...or are you now letting Flyer speak for you? So, the reason is that it is a PR mistake? Great. That's part of the free enterprise system that you have such disdain for as well...you make a decision you live with the consequences. Not hard to understand I wouldn't think. I do agree with Flyer. Not a good PR move on BofA's part at all. So what? That's their issue to live with, right? Does "bad PR move" qualify in your mind as "lots wrong with it"? Just wondering. -

So, as I expected...no explanation. Why am I not surprised? Your generation? ha! I have no clue what generation you claim to represent. I'd be surprised, however, if whatever generation it is, wanted you to be their spokesperson. -
As I understand it...there WILL be a Coach Mac Show at Rudy's this evening (11/7) at 6:30PM. Hope to see you there!

SO, IT'S HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SEASON
KRAM1 replied to SilverEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Interesting question. I too recall RV mentioning HS playoff games at Apogee and I fully expect we will see HS playoff games at Apogee...this year or next. But, what is even more interesting to me is that so-called supporters of UNT continue to question each and everything that takes place within the department. It doesn't seem to matter if they have any facts or not, they just seem to believe that whatever happened, the UNT Athletic Dept. will either sit on its hands or make the wrong decision. With supporters like these........ Has anyone ever thought that what is happening is exactly what was planned to happen? Apogee is a great recruiting tool for the Mean green. Coach Mac and RV have each said this more than once. So, if that is the case, why would they not be planning HS playoff games at Apogee? Come on folks...this year, next year...who knows, but I would fully expect to see playoff games at Apogee. -

Please explain yourself. 1) What's wrong with it? Last time I looked it was called business. A for-profit business. You are free to bank with them or not...don't recall seeing BofA holding a gun to any one's head. 2) Please explain "Fleece" in the light that BofA provided full disclosure and plenty of time before the fees took effect for anyone upset about it to move their account to another institution. Waiting........ -

Please, Sir, please tell me what's wrong with it. Seems to me that a debit card is not a mandatory part of one's life...just as a cell phone and many other items are required...they are a choice for MOST people. Yes, some folks need a cell phone for work...I get that...but debit cards and banks are choices. You can choose a bank, a credit union, etc. that fits your needs and your requirements. It;'s a CHOICE...and last time I looked free enterprise. Yes, banks have a "regulatory" piece and are charted by states or the fed, but your thinking that there is lots wrong with it smacks of either lack of knowledge or just plain "I want it free mentality just because I exist". When they start making debit cards mandatory, I'll give some thought as to whether the fees should also be regulated. Good grief, man...lots of options out there for "free". Find it if you wish. You can thank that wonderful piece of legislation Dodd-Frank for this as well. So, go occupy Washington DC if you have a gripe. In case you didn't realize it, BofA was actually looking for ways to rid itself of unprofitable accounts...which many small personal and business accounts are... while it looked for ways to recoup some lost income...thanks to Dodd-Frank. One way to do that is to up the fees. The accounts are either retained at a more profitable level or they go away and that helps profit and capitalization as well. Win-win. -
Look, Patton has to take responsibility for his academic issues. Too bad, but the kid should do the work in the classroom to stay eligible. However, I am wondering why UNT recruited him in the first place if he has these issues and why UNT's compliance folks did not know this at the start? Can't blame anyone other than Patton for the grade issues. I wonder about UNT's compliance folks. What did they miss here? Too bad...would loved to have seen Patton on the floor for the Mean Green. Maybe next year! I just wonder when these kids will figure out that classroom attendance and grades really do matter?

HUMDA did not come afterwards...and yes, they should definitely be upset with the legislation that followed. Have you any idea what's in that crap? The fact that BoA even tried the debit card thing is laid right at the feet of Dodd-Frank...and that's only one issue and a lessor one at that. -

Who says it's screwed up and why so? How many here have ever evaluated loan requests from small businesses either as an on-going concern or as a start-up? You might be surprised to find that may requests are DOA as the folks asking have no business plan, no experience, no capital, no collateral, no capacity, terrible credit etc., etc. Just because one has a good idea and a "want to" does not a good loan make. I spent lots and lots of years lending to small businesses early in my banking career. Made lots and lots of loans (all great loans when I made them, but not all good after I made them...HA!) and turned even more down. Microlending often comes down to "friends and family" and that has been happening here in the US for eons. The vast majority of small businesses fail within the first five years for any number of reasons...many times it's due to the lack of business skills on the part of the owner who just had a good idea or thought he/she knew how to run a restaurant or build a house or sell a widget. Banks ARE in the risk taking business, but they are not in the charity business and have a responsibility to protect the assets of their depositors through prudent and sound lending practices. We have all seen what happens when banks stray from that process and lower lending standards for the sake of political reasons, profit, regulation, etc., etc. Microlending is not a bad idea nor is it a bad idea for the US. Microlending is NOT small business lending in a banking sense. It has proven successful where people actually form groups to lend to other people and HOPE they get their money back to lend to others. My wife and I are part of a couple of microlending groups right now. Pretty cool stuff, but micro-lending is not small business lending in a banking sense. Also...please describe small business? Is it the SBA's definition of small business? The Obama Administrations definition of small business? PointBank Denton's definition of small business? Citigroup's definition of small business? Wells Fargo's definition of small business? What's your definition? How many employees? How much in annual revenues make a small business in your mind? All definitions have different structures, different needs, different experiences, different credit standards. Very easy to make comments and to cast dispersions on industries and people without all the needed info. It's another thing to know about it from the inside. And, to actually have to make those decisions with one's own career, the bank's reputation and depositors and investors funds on the line. Microlending, even in the US, is a very good thing and serves a very useful purpose. Microlending has been going on in the US for centuries. Small business lending is the riskiest of all bank lending. It takes professionalism, training, experience and some empathy for one's clients to do it well. -
To even suggest that RV and Dr. Rawlins do not know more than some random message board sports fans is simply inane on the face of it. Why is it that when something comes up...anything for that matter...some folks just immediately go to the "UNT is bad, UNT is wrong, UNT doesn't know what it';s doing, UNT has bad staffers, bad coaches who don't know enough to make the best player decisions, and on and on? It just gets so lame after awhile. I can see it now...RV and staff sitting around the conference table on Monday at the staff meeting and RV opens the meeting with "OK, guys, what can we mess up this week? Any suggestions? Make it a biggie. Oh, no suggestions today...well, let's go ask all the experts on GMG.com. They obviously know everything and about everything as well". IT'S RV'"S JOB to look out for the best interests of UNT and UNT Athletics. Why would anyone think he didn't know more than everyone on this board about his own athletic department. Give it a rest, folks. Why would anyone think he would not be making the best decisions he can for UNT given the circumstances and dollars he has to work with under the direction of the president of the university? Every parent on this board knows what it is like to have made a decision based on the information at hand that didn't turn out as well as expected. But, you made the best decision you could based on the information available to you at that time. Second guess yourself, sure, but beat yourself up...no...just move on and do the best you can with that next decision. If you think you will "win 'em all" you are in for a VERY rude awakening. Sometimes there are just things going on that folks on the outside have no idea about...such as limits on dollars, limits on time, instructions from above, meetings being held, strategies developed, etc., etc. It's always easy to say "should have known, or I would have done, or you should have done or that was a bad idea, or what didn't you?", it isn't as easy being the one actually making and doing. Fun to speculate and discuss, yes, indeed, but to constantly indicate that UNT is behind the curve or making no or bad decisions is just plain wrong. It seems to me to be a symptom of the "UNT Family's Attitude" toward UNT. I do not find this same constant criticism coming from the alums and friends of my other universities. It's an attitude that does UNT no good whatsoever in my opinion.

Reports now indicate that NYCC (a community action group made up almost entirely of ex-ACORN staffers) is behind much of the Occupy Wall Street protest efforts. They have now been exposed and are said to have fired workers and shred documents to cover up their involvement. Interesting turn of events...we have big labor and ACORN all supporting these folks and attempting to organize these groups. Pretty funny....pretty hypocritical. Yep, just a pure citizen patriot led spontaneous gathering....Hmmmmmmmmmm. Must watch closely to see what comes of this. Seems the usual suspects see an opportunity to herd the lemmings here. Edit: Some folks just can't handle the truth!

-
Funny, Joe, but don't think Imentioned "kiiling" anything or anyone,...just attacking the situation to the Belt's advantage. Killing is such a negative word and so final.
-
My answer would be yes! Attack...attack...attack now! Who knows? The Sun Belt could emerge a better/stronger conference in the wake of all this realignment mess.
-
Who is to say that will all the realignment "stuff" going on that the Sun Belt doesn't come out of all this with a few new faces that would add some pizazz and status to the conference that it doesn't have now? The chips are no where near through falling and as some have mentioned here, some decent schools seem to be left holding the bag in all this. It would not be the end of the world to have a reconstituted Sun Belt Conference that adds some teams (maybe loses a few as well) and moves up the food chain a bit. It's something it seems no one here has even mentioned. I cannot imagine that the Sun Belt office folks are just sitting around thinking that none of this realignment crap has any effect on them...not to mention the conference athletic departments. Some you you folks give our administration little to no credit for anything always pointing what YOU think are their failures while never even seemingly opening your eyes to all the positive that has taken place both on and off the field of play at UNT. To think that both the Sun Belt and UNT are just sitting idly by twitching their thumbs is just nuts. This is not even to mention the other AD's around the league. These are strange and interesting times in college athletics these days. I'd like to believe that "our guys and gals" are on top of all this as much as anyone. The idea that the Sun Belt could emerge stronger and better is definitely not out of the realm of possibility. In my humble opinion, that is.....

I have absolutely no problem with the way Coach Freeze handled the 4th quarter. However, I do question his "cut blocking" schemes. While "legal" in the strict sense of the word, I question why a coach would allow his coaches to "teach and coach cut blocking" as is obviously the case at Arky State. Too big a risk of injury. I'd like to see the cut block completely eliminated from college football. I may be mistaken, but hasn't the NFL banned the cut block?

This is a pretty ridiculous statement and smacks of simple sour grapes. The kid would have been a good "get" by UNT, but he chose a new program and a program where some other Ryan players are found. No problem with that at all. You certainly win some and lose some in the recruiting battles. BUT, once again we see that UNT is indeed attempting to recruit local players. The kid would have been a "good get" as I mentioned and he is definitely a nice pick-up for UTSA, but as has been stated here many times...sometimes local kids just want to get away from home. I suspect that young Mister Mohair never mentioned the words "skins on the wall" when announcing his decision. he's a good kid in the classroom and outside the classroom. I'll take him at his word as to why he chose UTSA over several other schools...not just UNT.

The problem is, they are protesting the wrong city...they should be camping out in DC and protesting the stupidity of the laws...ie; Dodd-Frank, HUMDA, etc. and the misguided Senators, Congressmen and Presidents who allowed these incredibly bad pieces of legislation to see the light of day. If you want to get to the bottom of the OWS "mess" and who/what they actually should be protesting try reading these pieces of legislation, try actually seeing what has been the result of these "do good" pieces of legislation. My problem with the OWS crowd is they, like most folks, have not done their homework or the real "heavy lifting" to determine where their anger should be directed...it should be directed squarely at DC! Until they do the homework and the heavy lifting they will be nothing more than some misguided, un-unified, leaderless and clueless protesters. Sorry...it is what it is....They should actually KNOW about what they are protesting. It's a shame they don't seem to have a clue. -
I agree...time to move on folks. Coach Mac has stated his case on more than one occasion and I think, whether we like it or not, he'll go with his experience over the postings on this board. It's his "skin" that is on the line with any and all decisions he makes. While I may not understand this situation, it isn't unusual that fans question a coaching decision. Always much easier to sit in that armchair and "know" the right thing to do...after the fact, of course. It puzzles me, it may puzzle you, but I'll go with Coach Mac on this one and see where it takes the Mean Green nation. BEAT TROY!

OK, yes, it puzzles me as to why Osborn never gets to see the light of day off the bench. The Arky State game was the perfect, PERFECT, opportunity to see Osborn in action. But, alas it appears it will not be...for what ever reason...here at UNT. I have met Osborn's parents...they live in Alabama and I am told Osborn's girlfriend still lives in Alabama. It's a hard trip for the parents to come to Denton and to away games and never ever see Brent take a snap. With all that going on, I would imagine that Brent leaves UNT after this season...if, of course, he would still like to PLAY a little football. Too bad, but it's the way it is at UNT with Coach mac. For some reason, Brent is just not going to get the chance to show what he can do in game situations. So be it, but I would not blame Osborn one iota if he left UNT after this season. If he does, I certainly wish him well...and would remind everyone on the board that Osborn didn't quit, UNT quit on him. It happens...tough call, but it does.

So? Taxpayers voted to foot the bill...ever hear of "voting"? Could have said no, correct? Like Dallas did for the new Cowboy stadium that Arlington also got...Oh, I forgot, the Dallas citizens never had a chance to vote on that one. I'm not a fan of taxpayer subsidizes for "private" enterprises...Obama, are you listening? But, the voters in Arlington had a say...just like the students at UNT had a say regarding the fee for Apogee. I could care less if only a few were capable of getting their rears off their couches to go vote. They had the opportunity to say one way of the other. If they are too lazy to go vote, they get what they deserve...they, in effect, have voted by their lack of interest and initiative. So be it. I find nothing wrong in the situation you describe. Again, why knock someone just because they have money and know how to make more? Arlington loves the stadium and what it is doing for their city it seems...good for them. The next folks who buy the Rangers will make the current owners even richer...so what? -
Does that include travel costs to and from his home for visits and holidays? Additional spending money for clothes/shoes? All the food the kid wants to eat? Whatever cost to an apt. or rental home they choose to select? Entertainment? All of this comes into play in covering the costs of a college education. I'm not kidding or trying to be funny or smart here...I am just trying to have a solid conversation regarding what people think should be covered by an athlete's scholarship funding. As you can see, it could get out of hand. How about the food costs for the football players as opposed to the soccer players? Do they get the same? What if a kid wants to live alone off campus vs having one or two roommates or selects to stay on campus? What about a kid who lives in Florida vs one who lives in Denton regarding travel home costs? How do you even all these things out? Seems to me the fair way is to set a stipend and let the players make their own choices. Some will make better choices than others, of course, but that's all part of the learning experience. Poor or not, the decisions seem to be similar and the costs to the school are certainly similar. So, the athlete can feel he "made it through his efforts" and have it ALL paid while the poor kid who "made it with his intellect" has to fend for himself or herself to cover all the extra costs of a college education? I know I am playing the devil's advocate here a bit, but thought I'd see if I couldn't get some real discussion and thinking going on this topic. It does fascinate me how the thought process goes for athletes and what they fell they have "earned" and what they feel they are 'entitled to" regarding their education. It seems their parents may have some of the same thought processes. I can tell you that we were under no illusions that the "free ride" our son was getting was truly 100% "free" even though in his case he earned it both with his efforts and his intellect...played soccer at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. So, I do have atad bit of experience here..not nearly as much as D-1 football and basketball players and parents have...admittedly, but at least some. We definitely "enjoyed" the breaks we got with tuition/books/fees/housing/food, etc., but my goodness there were many many other expenses to cover. And, by the way...there were many "poor" kids at the Academy as well who had to come up with the extra bucks to make it work. If you know me, you know I very much support those who work hard and are able to play college ball...whether scholarship or walk-on, so don't give me the crap that you think I am anti-athlete somehow just because I am asking for some thoughtful discussion in this thread. It does fascinate me..this "attitude" that seems to prevail with some college athletes and their families regarding what they believe they are entitled to with a scholarship. Are the benefits not laid out during the recruiting process at UNT/ We were certainly told and if we needed to ask additional questions...we did. Went into it with our eyes wide open....at least I thought we did...always a few surprises for all college students and their parents, right? OK, here's what I believe a full ride scholarship should cover: Tuition Books Fees On-Campus Housing On-campus Meal Card Realistic monthly stipend...more if you choose to live off campus, less if the athlete lives on campus. That's pretty much a free ride to an education. The idea that "all" expenses could be covered is not realistic in my opinion as everyone is different and has different needs and wants. It's the choices and the wants that usually seem to make the difference in one's college lifestyle and costs. OK...discuss.
