UNT AD Rick Villarreal candidate for Southern Miss?

You have a vaild point there...I wonder if it is a chicken or egg dilemma...who is keeping who in tow? -
What field are these folks in and what Master's degree do they hold...Art Appreciation perhaps? Just kidding about the art appreciation thing.....$30K right out of college isn't that bad in some fields by the way..... I happen to know a UNT grad who drives a limo and makes a 6-figure income. No one and nothing should guarantee anyone a job or any income level. Some folks get degrees in majors where income levels are traditionally and on average not very high. So what? What is wrong with being an administrative assistant (I don't think the PC folks like them being called secretary's any longer) or driving a cab? Honest work and if you do a good job you can make a really nice living...some admin. ass'ts make close to 6-figures by the way...I knew some while working in my career field. Yes, rare, but it happens. Sorry that you seem to want guarantees in life...often these folks you talk about have made personal choices that limit their earning and job abilities...want to live in a certain location, will not re-locate, got a degree in a different field, have family issues, can't work the hours required or the days required, have personality issues, have credit issues, have legal issues and on and on and on. For every "degreed" person you can find that "appears" to be underemployed or not employed, I can find you probably as many or more that, when you look, have issues and who have made personal choices that play into that situation. Case in point...I was once...much earlier in my career, offered a much higher paying and bigger title position if I would move to Houston. My decision, and what we decided as a family, was that it was better, as a family, if I did not take that position and move. I didn't....took me years to ever reach the income level and position I passed on by not picking up and moving to Houston. Have NEVER regretted that decision....not for one nano-second, but my choice had a direct impact on my career. Just mentioning this before you think I've had no experience with "making personal choices". So, nice to live in a "La La" world where everyone gets a guaranty of a "chicken in every pot", but that's just not the real world. Can't find a job in Chicago...check out Dallas...oh, don't want to or can't move...seems to play into that situation a bit to me. My nephew and his Dad owned a business in Michigan laying fiber optics and cable and that sort of thing...did really well...until...boom. No work...nephew tried to hang on but eventually lost his home and business...did he sit around and blame anyone...or go live in an Occupy Tent somewhere and play the "poor me it's not fair" game, no he sucked it up...moved his family to a rental home and left the area to work in N. Mexico, Missouri and upper Mich. to make an income and support his family and his wife went to work in a local grocery store. Underemployed...you bet your rear end...but not blaming anyone, just sucking it up and doing what had to be done to move forward. saw the guy at Christmas and he never complained about anything and was very upbeat about the future. Just sayin..... Our society needs to help those who truly need help. Not those who seem to think the "world owes them anything" 'cause it doesn't.

Rudy, +1 for you, Sir. My thoughts exactly on Ron Paul. Love lots of what he has to say, but some of the other is just a non-starter for me and overrides a lot of the good ideas he has....No way he gets the R nod as candidate...BUT, my concern is that he might try a third party run. That would mean that every vote for Ron Paul as a 3rd party candidate would actually be a vote for Obama. I hope Ron Paul sees that and does what he can after the primaries to help defeat Obama in November, not actually to help Obama get re-elected to make some "point". I realize Ron Paul folks will not like that post, but if you actually think about it you will see that it is true. Ron Paul represents his district very well, and has been a hard-working Congressman who is, in my opinion, much closer to being a Libertarian than a Republican...that I sort of like of him as he cannot always be a "reliable" vote for the R's on every darn issue, but his views in several areas are just a bit too far out of the mainstream to be electable to any higher office on the federal level. I like the guy, I just hope he doesn't "go off the deep end" after having to drop out of the primary race.

Nope...too much coordinatuion to do yet to be ready with that...but soon...I hope!

I think this is an indication of the positive things that RV has done for UNT, and the fact that lots of folks within the college athletic ranks view him very favorable. It seems a shame that some of the Mean Green's own can't "see the forest for the tress" enough to appreciate the tightrope that RV has to walk. His willingness to open up to fans and his efforts to upgrade the UNT program across the board, for me, are real pluses within his tenure at UNT. Instead of seeing the positives some want to focus on some supposed slight or decision made that they don't agree with and simply cannot get past it for any reason and no matter what takes place. Being an AD is a tough job. Case in point.....after one road football game this last season and in meeting the players after the game, I noticed this "big dog donor" bending RV's ear for what seemed like forever...RV could not get away to deal with anything he may have needed to do nor talk with any players, players parents or coaches as the guy was going on and on and on....even grabbed a meal that was set out for the players! Nice. Here we have a big dog donor grabbing a meal intended for the players, bending RV's ear and simply doing the "look at me...I'm important" thing in front of all to see...yes, it was after a road loss...tough time for the team. You just can't get away from this stuff, and at UNT we have been spoiled by an AD who allows access to him from large and small donors alike. Yet, folks still want to complain about how they would do it better, have better ideas and how RV just must not be on top of things... TOUGH TOUGH job and getting harder and harder all the time. Be careful what you ask for as if RV does leave for S Miss or any other spot, the "next guy" may have very different views of access and how smaller donors are treated..... I think this is a bit of an honor for UNT and for RV. But, I do hope his ties remain with the Mean Green! UNT is a great place to be and Denton is a great place to live. I'm hoping that's enough to keep RV "Mean Green" and leading UNT's program. -
Where do you dig up this nonsense, "Dude"? And, no, you have not answered my question..."Dude"...nice language too, must have hit a nerve. When folks find they are backed into a corner they often start yelling and using bad language. Nice play, "Dude". Who the heck uses "Dude" these days? Is it back as some form of word to use when you can't think of anything else? If you don't like millionaires in Congress, don't vote for them...or go run yourself. That's like saying a rich guy can't serve his country....stupid! I don't care if 100% of them are millionaires...I do not begrude anyone their net worth and I don't have any envy of those who happen to be better of than I am on a financial basis...so the heck what?

Just want to let folks know that I am starting the initial work on this year's GMG.Com BB game to benefit the UNT Cheer Squad. I am in contact with the new Cheer Coach, and we will soon begin the process of selecting a date/time and getting this year's framework all set out. It will, just like last year's game, be a one-game event with pre-registration required. No walk-ups...had a bit of a challenge with this concept last time around for some reason even after all the posts about signing up for the game, so I just wanted to make that clear from the very beginning so we will not have that misunderstanding again this time around. I hope everyone who participated last season will return to play again this year. Right now I am looking for sponsors for the t-shirts, program ads and for silent auction items. We raised a decent amount of funds for the Cheer Squad last year, but i would really like to do even better this time around. If you have a possible item that you could donate to the auction or if you or your business could in any way see fit to help sponsor the game, please PM me. I am trying to start early enough so that folks have time to help if they are of such a mind. If you would simply like to purchase a program/flyer ad...please PM me...there will be space for full-page, 1/2 page and 1/4 page ads...not very expensive either....If you would like the front inside cover or the back inside cover let me know. I am going to save the back cover itself for our GAME SPONSOR if we can find one. I know several folks on the board own local businesses and/or like to find ways to help. So, let me know, and we'll get together. Also, if you have interest in playing this year...let me know. Playing fees will remain at $25/per player and that will include a game t-shirt. I know the date is not set as yet, but would just like an early indication to see if there is enough interest in getting this going. I think there is, but I need confirmation of that "thought". Yes, the half-time half-court shot contest will return again this year! Come on Tasty...I know you can play this year...Quoner.......

I like this thread! Glad to see some Mean Green optimism after giving a bit of bad news time to digest a bit!

I've asked that very question many times on GMG.com. -

So, Harry...who is your son's friend blamming for his "challenges" at A&M? My guess, he knows who is ultimately responsible...especially as you state that he is "incredible bright". Yep, it can kick your "butt" as you say...if it kicked your's a bit...who did you see as the responsible party? I don't think it is one being on a "high horse" to expect kids to take responsibility for thigs they have complete control over, and who are getting "special treatment" that these other regular students do not get. LET ME ALSO SAY THIS...while many here want to blame academic counselors, the AD, the rough road schedule, the fact they are freshman, etc., etc. I have not heard one word suggesting that both Williams and Jones are not 100% aware that the responsibility is their's...probably just like your son's friend. So, I don't think folks are "on their high horse" regarding the kids as much as they might be regarding all those who are quick to place the blame on everyone other than the students. -

Please do tell me whose responsibility it is if it is not the student's own to pass classes? Seems the vast majority of our athletes in every sport, including basketball, do manage to stay eligible...heck, some even are honor roll students. Please tell the other 34,000+ students who is responsible that they actually do the work and pass? I do not "excuse" anyone here who had a role in this mess, but one should clearly see who is ultimately responsible for this. You can say, well, these kids have to practice, travel, etc. Sure, don't all our other athletes and haven't they since college athletics was created in the first place? Don't many non-athlete kids have to work one, two or even three jobs to pay for their college? That certainly can take a bit of time away from studies, right? Look, I get it, not all the non-athlete kids pass either, but I can bet they don't go around and blame some administrator. My guess, they probably wish they were provided the special tutors that our scholarship athletes receive. And, what about our walk-on non-scholarship athletes? Do they get the same access to tutors that our scholarship players get? I don't think they do...yet, somehow they manage to pass in the vast majority. Want to pass the blame off on someone? Great, if that makes you feel better...go for it. For me, while I understand there are several folks who probably question the work they did regarding these kids, the bottom line falls squarely on these student-athletes. You did catch the threads about Williams spending his class time on Twitter, right? If you are not passing a class, seems to me you might want to be paying attention to what the instructor is saying...no? Hard for an academic advisor to deal with that sort of thing...going to class is one thing...paying attention and participating is another matter. Why is it today today that people are so fast to excuse a person for their actions when that person is actually and ultimately the responsible party? -

WOW..really bad news and as expected people just want to jump to conclusions that they have no way of supporting with any facts...I've read "epic fail" on the part of the AD, "how could they not know?", ridiculous comments like ignoring everyone else to focus on T Mitchell and on and on. So, please tell me how you know that the academic support staff was not working diligently with both these guys? Academic support personnel can only do so much...they cannot go to class for these guys, they cannot make sure all assignments are actually completed and turned in by the student, they cannot take the tests for the students...and they cannot spend every waking moment with these guys. There is just somethings that a person must set as a priority for themselves and do what it takes to make it happen. The fact these kids even needed academic tutors says something to me about the preparation they received in HS and the "special treatment" as athletes that they may have received in the classroom. I do not know the facts here...they have not been reported by the university and should not be reported for the sake of privacy. I think there is probably a bit of "blame" for everyone involved in this matter, but bottom line to me is that these players are 100% responsible for their own academic progress...just like any other student enrolled at UNT. The fact that they receive academic tutoring as part of their program is a bonus and, as such, should insure that they pass. But, also, like several more "calm" heads have indicated, its good that this happened in the first semester of their freshman years. If they take care of business, and T Mitch himself just might help make that happen, they will help guide UNT for several years to come. It might even "bleed off" on some of the other players who are on the "margin" as far as grades are concerned. By sitting on the bench and knowing they have let their team down, the lesson will more than likely be learned. All is not lost. This might just be the catalyst that helps Tony Mitchell shine and simply take over a game knowing more is on his very capable shoulders now to be a leader of this team. It will also allow other players to step up and fill that void...perhaps even seeing progress that would not have come without the extra playing time. I don't like this one little bit...it's bad...no way it should have happened, these kids made a mistake and they will pay the price, as will UNT and its fans and students. But, UNT still has a season to play and the sun will definitely come up this morning. I feel bad for these two young men, the team, the staff and the alums and fans. I wish them nothing but success in getting their academics back in order, and I look forward to seeing them on the court next season. Wow...bad news. Hopefully, lesson learned! -
They certainly do. I have a friend who works for the City and it is a topic of conversation for them transfere often. Every time they hear some announcer talking about going to Dallas or here we are in Dallas for the Cowboy game, etc. they cringe....a matter of professionalism for me. Anyway, really enjoyed seeing Rooster's get some PR last evening. I hope it helps his business. If you have not tried Rooster's, it's pretty darn good...beer is always cold and you get free peanuts in the shell while you wait...doesn't get much better than that. Right next door to Fuzz's Tacos on Industrial in Denton. Check it out.

I understand your point, but it smacks of a credibility issue with me. I seek out these places when they are local and when I am traveling...not only places from the Food Channel's "Heat Seekers" series, but also its "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" series. Would be nice to know you are looking in the correct spot for these places. I have often found restaurants with same and very similar names located in various cities. Lots of folks do not trademark these names as it's probably not the highest priority some guy has when trying to open a "mom and pop" place. Would it have been that hard for them to say something like...."Now we are going to head a little north of Dallas to Denton, Texas, the home of the University of North Texas (OK...had to add that UNT bit) and Rooster's Roadhouse to try out the Hell Burger". Really would that have been that hard????

OK, is this a first for me or what? Excellent comments here from Shaft folks. I don't recall too many folks complaining about the run oriented offense when UNT was winning...Dickey, at the end, ran a very boring offense that turned me and a lot of other Mean green fans off. But, to Shaft's point, his failure was more in not continually upgrading his assistants, changing his game plan to utilize the best players and schemes available, and in doing a VERY poor recruiting job. Well, we can also mention his "love" for the fan base. I really do think we can give Dickey a rest here, and move on. It's Mac and Company time now, and so far...so very good!

I watched the Food Network's Heat Seekers show last evening (1/16/12) at 7PM (CST) as I saw in the paper (Denton Record-Chronicle) that they were featuring a spot on Rooster's in our very own Denton backyard. Rooster's "Hell Burger" was to be the focus of a contest between the show's hosts. Pretty good show and it was great PR for a locally owned spot right here in Denton EXCEPT for one thing...they kept saying DALLAS! They never mentioned Denton or the restaurant's actual location...not once even as they walked the open air seating area right in from of the place...kept saying Dallas! I felt sorry for Rooster's as there will be folks who regularly watch that show looking for Rooster's in Dallas and will never find it or give it a try. The guy allowed them into his shop, allowed them to film and more than likely disrupt regular clients and his normal flow of activity and yet, did not have the professionalism to even mention that the place was in DENTON...not Dallas. Well, I enjoyed the show segment on Rooster's and was glad to see a local guy get the PR, but really felt bad for him the way it was presented as a Dallas restaurant. Did anyone else catch the show last night?

Back-to-Back SBC Honors For Tony Mitchell
KRAM1 replied to DeepGreen's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Excellent news. Congrats, Tony. The great thing to me is that UNT has several players, in addition to Tony, on this year's team that could very well see SBC weekly honors befopre this season is over.
