  1. Great report...thanks so much. Sorry to miss the Plano event as Jordan case ALWAYS puts on a great show...quality guy, quality auto shop! Hey, one thing...and I have seen it several times in GMG.Com postings...It's "Fry"...not "Frye" when discussing former UNT great HC Hayden Fry. I know some of the "younger folks" here were not around during those great Fry days, so, no problem, but wanted to set the record straight for those who just don't know. Coach Benford did not name the late player at the Denton event, so good to know who it was and how it came to happen. This should set the tone for the team and should help Tony and his teammates KNOW that Coach Benford is serious. I like this guy more and more every day...we can all hope the on-court results are just as to our liking. I'm thinking they will be. Great to get the confirmation that ALL players will be eligible in the Fall...let's hope they stay that way and that "lessons were learned"! Go Coach Benford!
  2. I have yet to see an argument here that is against this ban that hasn't been put out there in support of smoking in public and/or private places for years and years. never worked then...isn't going to work now. Sorry smokers, get used to it...UNT will be a smoke free campaus...if not now, well soon enough. You know it and I know it...you are supporting a losing cause with this one...since when was UNT ever...ever seen to take a conservative position on something like this issue? Get over it and move along...better yet...stop smoking. How people can still be smokers in this day and age with all the knowledge they have about the health benefits of not smoking to both themselves and their loved ones is beyond me...and so many of these folks have college degrees and/or on on their way to college degrees. Amazing stuff. And, please enough with the "Johnny jumped off the building and died, so I should do it too" arguments regarding alcohol usage....so, since you see one item as bad, let's just add another? Great logic college folks...great logic. Hey, personally, I could care less about this issue...don't smoke, never have (stupid waste of money in my opinion), but the reality of it is...in today's world...smoking is a losing proposition and position. So, puff away, but know your puffing days on the UNT campus are numbered.
  3. been out of town and am late to this party, but Happy B'Day, harry...really do appreciate all you do for the Mean Green Nation. Hope you had a great birthday celebration, youngster that you are!
  4. It seems lots of folks know how to do things so much better than those actually charged with happen. Never mind the fact that they have no real clue about what's going on, how it has to work at a state institution, who the donors may be and how much they might donate, etc., etc. they always have an opinion on how they know better how things should or should not be done. hey, it's not just here, it's in every business in every town in this great nation of ours. Opinions are worth exactly what people pay for them, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. In fact, that's exactly what these boards are all about opinions...so, bring 'em on. If you don't care for the opinions expressed...well state your own. However, let's not get our feelings hurt just because someone disagrees and then take your ball and go home. It's fun to see how all the "experts" know so much better how to do stuff than the people who have actually been charged with getting stuff done. Lots of opinions here people...mine included...some are good and some have some knowledge behind them, others...well.....opinions, people, opinions.....
  5. I can understand your position regarding signing him, but are you really indicating that him having a drink is no real problem? What planet do you live on? That's a monster problem for the guy, and I thought everyone knew that. Good gosh...it's a major problem for many addicts just like Josh. You might want to bone up on your awareness of major addiction cases such as Josh Hamilton. Without the help, support and love of a great wife and family, and a slew of professionals,he could well be living on skid row right now...or worse. He is very lucky that he is a ballplayer and not just your "average Joe". Even one drink...one beer and the guy could be banned. Or, much worse, it could lead to an immediate and serious relapse into addition and using. This is really serious stuff folks, and Josh knows it...it's tough to overcome...very tough.
  6. Yep, the problem with the "loss of freedom" thing is when your "freedoms" run me or someone else off the road, cause bodily injury or injury to property! "Freedom" comes with responsibility.
  7. Still loved the book. Have a copy at home to this day. The "why college football should be banned" stuff is just plain silly..."ain't" gonna happen. And, BTW, the taxpayers are not paying Stoops and Saban's inflated salaries. So, whatever they make is fine with me...want to talk about inflated salaries, let's talk about Hollywood, the music industry and professional athletes as well. On the other hand, free market...no tax dollars, one is free to buy or not buy the tickets, records, etc. So....if owners and fans want to pay the freight good for them. No problem with it at all. Now, if the taxpayer was on the hook...as they are for some of the studium around the country, then that, my friend, is another matter altogether. Pay the taxpayer off first...or don't have the taxpayer involved in the first place...before the owner makes a dime over expenses. Just sayin......fun discussion topic however, no?
  8. Ok, and for the baseball fanatics on the board, do the rangers try to sign Hamilton after this year? I ask because I know he will be superr expensive and I don't quibble with that given his results, but if I wwere the Rangers GM, I would have a "price point" that I would not go over...even $1.00 and if Josh couldn't sign for that I would bid him adieu and best wishes. Yes, as great a player as he currently is...here's my reasoning; 1. Fragile...I think we can all guarantee that he will on the DL at least 2-3 times this season....it can only get worse with the wear and tear and abuse his body has taken...and not all from baseball; and 2. He is one relapse away from disaster at all times and has shown that relapses will continue to occur...no one, not even Hamilton knows when the next will happen. So, is the risk-reward worth it? I ask because I love watching Hamilton play and love having him on the home town rangers, but...as a GM it isn't about "Love having him"...it's about production and dependability and clubhouse demeanor, etc. So, baseball folkls who know much more about this stuff than I do...what say you? Try to keep the emotions out of it folks...we all know Josh hamilton is a GREAT baseball player. Potential Hall of Famer...IF...and the "if" is a big IF in Hamilton's case....
  9. Indeed...I never took it that you were actually dissing the kid...it just started going from there with all the speculation stuff and even someone suggesting the kid take a grey shirt and academic scholarship to make room for someone else...crazy! The other concern I had was that I know player and recruit parents and the recruits themselves have been known to read this board. Having a new coach come in can and does cause some angst for recruits and recruit parents as they know full well what can and does happen to scholarships in these situations at some schools. Thought the speculation and then the widening of the speculation could well be having some negative effects outside the board. Your basketball comments are often some of the best and I enjoy reading them, so, for me...please don't think I was "banging" on your comments...again, did not see them as some "this kid can't play D1 and let's trade him out" kind of stuff. You know too much about basketball to make such comments. So, it's over...thank you Coach Benford for making that clear last evening. As you say...welcome aboard and let's do go dancing...I think Clarke can help UNT punch its ticket to that dance!
  10. WOW! Really sorry to hear this...but, glad you are OK. This talking on the phone and texting "stuff" while driving is getting really bad...and to think there are people who think it is perfectly OK and harmless. You could have been severely injured or worse because this women was so self-centered and stupid! Not to mention the damage to your vehicle. Glad you are OK...hope you get to catch the "show" another time...it was greatness!
  11. If only all smokers were as courteous as Flyer claims to be...and I have absolutely no reason to doubt him, but, alas, that is not the case...and.....smoking does effect me and others in a negative way even though I have never smoked. I am not in favor of banning smoking in general by any government agency. However, in this case, and since it effects so many people in such a negative way, I'm good with it. It's a "compromise" of sorts I guess. Everyone is definitely free to form their own opinions on this one. I would, however, suggest that the trend is not looking good here for the smoker crowd on the UNT campus.
  12. For those of you speculating on the future of signee Clarke Overlander out of Argyle, TX, let the speculation cease regarding his status. Coach Benford made it very clear that Clarke is a part of the team and that he has a place on that team and that Coach has seen him play and he is pleased with him! The fact that some on here...and elsewhere were speculating on Clarke's future with the squad without any real first-hand knowledge was, for me, a bit disconcerting to see, and I am more than happy to have it behind us all now once and for all. Just from what I have witnessed and seen, Clarke Overlander may well surprise a few folks...our so-called basketball gurus here on GMG.Com and elsewhere...with his ability to earn playing time and become an integral member of what looks to be an excellent Mean Green team going into the 2013 season and beyond. The idea that he "couldn't compete" because he played for a 3A school was just beyond nuts! The idea that he should take a grey shirt and academic scholarship to free up space...well, laughable. Anyway, Clarke Overlander had opportunities to play elsewhere at the D1 level...this according to Coach Benford last evening...and he chose UNT because he wants to be here and he wants to play for UNT. His FIRST CHOICE of places to play. So, since it is settled once and for all...it was NEVER unsettled for me....never had any doubts about his remaining at UNT....and on athletic scholarship....let's all get behind Clarke and the rest of the team and this program and FILL THE SUPER PIT FOR NEXT SEASON'S FIRST GAME!!!! be there and bring some friends...it's going to be the first of many wins this year! Welcome aborad Clarke, P.J. and Keith....GO MEAN GREEN!
  13. Indeed...Great getting to meet you as well. I ALWAYS like getting to meet fellow GMG.Com folks and fans of the Mean green. Looking forward to getting to know you even better in the coming months...keep posting and keep supporting the Mean Green! WOW! All I can say is that it was a GREAT event last night. Loved getting to hear from Coach Mac, RV, Coach Murczek, Coach Peterson and Coach Benford! Having the Pep band, Cheer Squad and Dance Team represented really gave it a celebratory feel. If you cannot get excited about the present and future of Mean Green Athletics now I just don't know how you will ever be excited. The future seems so very bright right now. Great crowd...and should get even better as the years go by. If you could not attend last evening's event at Apogee, do yourself a big favor (and take a friend with you) and make one of the remaining three in either Dallas, Ft. Worth or Plano. You will be super glad you did! Great event, well staged, great food, super atmosphere!
  14. Indeed...GO MEAN GREEN!
  15. I am all for a smokeless campus. I also think the vast majority of students AND faculty/staff will be in favor as well. Plenty of campuses are smoke free as are work places and many restaurants/bars these days. My bride works on campus and she tells me that everyone she works with is in favor of a smokless campus. Several not because they are so much against smoking but rather the trash it seems to create all over campus. Hey, I don't work there, just reporting what i am told by someone who does. I do notice this when I am on campus, however. Just last week saw a guy heading into a building and as he did he threw his still lit cigarette (less than half smoked) on the grass. Yes, I went over and crushed it out...no, I didn't pick it up for obvious reasons. Seems to me that often smokers are their own worst enemies in situations like this.... I wish smokers (in general here) were courteous enough to pay attention where they smoke and what they do with their cigarette butts as they discard them. But, I see too many who just seem to think it's OK to puff away anywhere and to throw their trash anywhere...even when still lit.
  16. Well, if you think ND still...to this day...and with lots of young people as well as "old"...is still not VERY popular and very well supported you are simply not informed. To compare the popularity of ND with an SMU and/or Pepperdine is just not being aware of what ND is to this day to lots of folks. Perhaps you don't travel much, but if you did you would notice...especially during the football season. What I will agree with is that many of the ND fans have lost some of their swagger after a several few down years in FB and BB, but they are there...let the FB team once again compete yearly for the national title and you'll realize what the "score" with these folks is all about. Do not let the record in FB over the last 6-7 years cloud your view of ND's popularity with a pretty good chunk of folks. Am I a ND fan, nope, but know several and know they are as ardent today as they they can be,....and they are indoctrinating their young with the ND "stuff" as well.....
  17. Sweet shoes! I wonder who is paying if they only wear them for one game? Should be interesting to see the crowd for this game. There is, in fact, a pretty good fan following for college football in Ireland, England and in parts of Europe. There are several "football clubs" developing and several US rules football associations. So, this is not too far out there are a game "event". But, why go to the trouble? You would have to ask ND and Navy that. For me, I'd love to be there in the stands to see this game! GO NAVY!!!!!!! Edit: Why doeas this thing bold they type? I just must learn more about this new website configuration...sorry folks...I really am not yelling this morning.
  18. I wish him nothing but the best. I really enjoyed watching him play and thought he could develop into one of UNT's great LB's before it was all said and done. Really hate that he has left the program. All the best....
  19. See everyone in Denton this evening! Can't wait...this will be a great evening to celebrate with members of the Mean Green Nation. So many great things happening...couldn't miss the celebration!
  20. Wow! Bad news...any ideas why? Hate to see this one.
  21. I believe it is the same for everyone...don't forget that Mean Green Club renewal while you are at it as well. CUSA here we come!
  22. I'll be there! Should be a fun evening at APOGEE! No excuses about there being too much traffic to fight to get to Denton after work in time for the game. Only concern for me is the possibility that a late school night start might keep a few "family pack" buyers away. I understand that if you have "little ones", but hopefully others can make up the difference and we can have a big crowd for that game...it's going to be an EVENT you will want to attend!
  23. Really, did you just suggest that UNT put the "white kid" on academic scholarship? So, white kids are academicly OK, but can't play basketball well enough to stay on an athletic scholarship after they are signed and BEFORE they even have one day's practice with the team? Is that what you really said? Funny!
  24. Tell me...just tell me...who can deny or poo-poo the great things ahppening at UNT anf for UNT athletics these days? The addition of Coach Evans makles so much sense. I had my doubts about UNT landing Coach Evans, but this si going to be very good for the basketball program and wil really help Coach Benford and the entire squad. GREATNESS! The AD is stepping up big time these days folks...time to put the petty BS behind us, come together and support...big time this program. NO MORE EXCUSES!
