GMG.Com comments after the MVST game..... If JJ was still the coach: Just playing down to the competition Early season warm-up for Conference Players getting used to each other Ran out to a big lead and then just coasted It's a win...I'll take it Free throw average will get better...they are working on it Held them to their lowest point total of the year..defense looks to be an emphasis this year Team will be fine once it gets to Conference...with CUSA conference is only thing that matters With Benford as Coach: Terrible game against a really bad opponent Can't shoot free throws at all Can't shoot the open jumper No defense against a team getting beat by 20-30 a game Players are not player together....too many turnovers Team is going to get killed once it gets to conference

Snowy...is that a joke or are you being serious about the students being confused? If serious, that needed to be fixed ASAP. If kidding...LOL.

Interesting...all the people who were not there want to talk about attendance, not the way the team is playing and the effort they are giving. Telling..... This team really played hard tonight. It was great to watch as they seemed to really be having fun on the court...something I did not see last season. Don't know how it will shake out for the Mean Green this year as it is much too early to tell and the competition will get harder once we hit the conference schedule, but this was fun. But, in this early part of the season it looks to be a team having fun. Hopefully that continues. Williams is definitely the team leader at this point, but the newcomers are definitely going to contribute. Combs may just be the real deal, but as Andrew said earlier a little quiet tonight. He's a freshman learning his way in D1 ball, but sure seems like a "good get" to me. I guess we will all see as the season progresses. So, for all the folks focusing on the fact that attendance is low, yes, you are correct. Very disappointing. These players deserve better. Student attendance is very poor even though some are indeed spread out in the Super Pit, but even so....very very poor. Attendance numbers will certainly hurt recruiting and create a poor "home court advantage", but I get the feeling that this group of players will play hard none the less. A 3-0 (4-0 counting the exhibition) start might help get a few more students out soon, but I don't expect to see much better attendance until UNT hits conference. So, super fun tonight...would have been even more fun with a bigger crowd getting rowdy, but not to be. Thankfully this sqùad plays on and is playing well. Can only hope the solid play and wins continue. But, 3-0 is as good as it could get at this point. Anyone who ventures over to the Super Pit this season is likely to see a different team attitude and a team that appears to have some player leadership. So far, so good. Jury is out on how it goes long term for this squad. Plus...I could be wrong, but seems that Coach Benford is subbing less (well, that is a relative term here) even as the team presses a good bit more. Pretty fair defensive effort from the team tonight as well...at least in my opinion. Some serious lapses, but every time Deleware a State closed the gap in the second half, UNT answered. Nice to see.

Oh, do you? Appreciate your being judge as to "how to do it". How typical of you, but not unexpected. My post was very much asking the question....it was for others to set the to tone. If you read something else in it, that's on you. You seem to want to find something negative in anything I post. The original post is no longer there for good reason, but I would challenge anyone to find any "calling out" of anyone in that post and I remind you that YOU set the tone where this went with the implication of "better fandom" being implied. So, while I appreciate GrayEagle's post, it is not so different in tenor or tone...and would have been a great addition to the adult conversation I was so hopeful of having on the subject. Alas, that was not to be.

Well, Christopher, the point was to be an inward look at the UNT fan base....what it thinks it is and what it might really be...lots of talk about "big time" on this board by some very vocal posters....so, what is a big time fan base and how does a big time fan base respond to its team win, lose or draw...good weather bad weather....donation levels, season ticket purchases, etc. like the coach or not, like the AD or not...how does a big time program and its fan base respond to that and how is the UNT fan base response adding up these days? A couple of current threads speak to this very issue. An introspective look so to speak. But, it was more than a little obvious from the first response that the discussion was not going to go that way. It's OK to rag on the coaches, the AD, the BOR, the citizens of Denton, the students, the Chancellor, the President of UNT, and the players, etc., but ask to look in the mirror and discuss the fans part in all this and you get the usual crap-ola about "better fan" and all that. It's OK to call for the student fees to increase, but don't dare talk about maybe the fans stepping up contributions a tad. So, instead of it going downhill fast, I just took it off. As one of our posting friends likes to say "Only at North Texas".

Great idea. I assume you are also coming to the Super Pit to root for UNT'S players as well. Just jabbing you a bit! Mark

NT Men's Cross Country = Conference Champs 2014
KRAM1 replied to 10Eagle10's topic in Mean Green Athletics
This sort of thing emphasizes yet again how much a crap shoot it is in hiring head coaches. Our CC coach (Stefanie Slekis) was selected to her first HC position by RV to re-vitalizations this program. She was a volunteer assistant at Florida State and a grad assistant at McNeese State before she was hired for UNT's vacant head coaching position. She is young, energetic and super talented. But, came without HC experience. Super excited that she is the Mean Green HC, and seems to have this program headed in the right direction. UNT is really upping the ante in many of its programs. These programs, soccer, cross country, golf, tennis, volleyball, swimming/diving, softball, etc. are just as I portant to the student-athletes and coaches who participate in them as are football and basketball to the general "fan" at UNT. And while they are not "revenue" sports, these sports are representative of the progress being made in athletics at UNT. Congrats to our student-athletes, their coaches and the administrators who have placed re-need emphasis on these sports at UNT! -
Confirmed: Beer at the Pit this year
KRAM1 replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Not quite the same...admission will be free, but beer and spirits will cost starting this year...no dinners, but hors d'oeuvres will be served. Looks like since beer is now being sold in the Super Pit, they cannot give it away in the Green Room. Should work out the same price for me if my wife and I have two beers each in the Green Room. Six of one, half a den of another...all good. -
The folks who need to get over themselves are the ones not donating, not buying tickets and yet still claiming to support the athletes while they whine and bitch about everything UNT.

Travis...I am talking history here. Long before you were a twinkle in your Dad's eye. When England won their last World Cup they did it with the long ball. During the heyday of Boluvian soccer it was all possession ball...as it was pretty much with Pele and Brazil. Many many hybrids now for the very reasons you discuss. Not many pure "kick and run" teams going on these days, as ISU the case with the Brazilian "beautiful game" of yore. Defenses are different as well, thus the rise of hybrid play. Players are so skilled today that the European and especially English kick and runof yore, while fast and fun to both play and watch, just doesn't work when one reaches the big championships these days. Sort of how we have watched the evolution of American football play in the last 40-50 years. Even at the youth level we have seen a big transition in play styles...just being big and fast doesn't cut it today...again the English have paid the price for believing that big was better. Muscle is great and speed still "kills", but the game also favors the smaller, quicker and highly skilled players as well in today's hybrid offensive styles. One reason soccer is such a great sport. Check out the book "How soccer Explains the World"... Or something close to that regarding how soccer has impacted the geo-political landscape in the word. Really good read...not on this topic, but a really good soccer fan read.

Don't see a problem at all with your comments...just be prepared for a much larger required donation for seats...MUCH larger and many many less "extras"... Unless, of course, you are of the $2500 donation per year PER seat type plus the cost of the tickets to park in Fouts and sit in that wing. Folks, UNT is not in a P5 Conference and, if one is realistic, is not in a position with its support levels to be in one in any of our lifetimes unless someone hits the MegaLottery and ponies it all up. The small level of fan financial support for this program is what is embarrassing. The varied, creative and numerous fan excuses as to why they do not donate or why they won't buy season tickets is even more embarrassing. Took Oklahoma State a lot of years to break through this same situation with its fans and donors, but it did and has made great progress in recent years. And, if you think it is all Boone Pickens you are sadly...very sadly mistaken. Check the names on many of the new facilities (such as the beautiful new indoor practice facility) at OSU...it isn't Boone. The foundation gave me a list of donors by level during a recent visit....well, donors starting at...starting....at the $1000 level. To say I was stunned would be an understatement. What was also interesting was the number of years these folks have been donating....through the good and bad years without break. Point being, it will take UNT a good many years to break the mindset of "let someone else do it, I don't like the coach or AD" attitude. It has to be about UNT not the coaches and/or administrators. Another point is that UNT is making positive progress. The old attitudes so often displayed here are on the way out with the younger generation of students. We see it all over the campus and through the Alumni Association and to a lesser degree with athletics, but a positive change none the less. UNT is not a swift Coast Guard cutter, but rather an outdated WWII battleship....it takes a long time to turn this ship and it takes a full crew doing their part....but slowly turning it is and that is a very good thing indeed. Go Mean Green...beat UTEP!

History lesson.....generally speaking of course... Long ball.....British and European soccer/football Possession Soccer.....Latin American soccer/football All in what you like. Both work given the right players...both don't work with the wrong players. Sort of harsh to say you can't win a big game with the long ball style.

ticket promo....excellent. Will be good to see a nice turnout in support of this team.

As greendylan so appropriately pointed out, strange things happen in exhibition games. OKC was 2-0 on the season and was angering over 95 points per game. Point being, they had more early season game experience which is critical in getting new players settled in and returning players having some game knowledge in what to expect from those new players. Practice is great, but nothing beats actual game experience. So UNT is now 2-0 in exhibitions. For me, I am realky Hapoy that both games were very close and that UNT ended up winning both. Blowout wins in exhibition games don't help much in preparing for the "real" season. So, lots of teachable moments here just like Peterson and the women. Let's hope those teachable moments sink in and the team's settle in and mesh for the regular season. Rumor has it that the men are a much more "together" team than we have seen in recent years. Will that translate into wins? Who knows? We can hope so, but we will all see soon enough. If you are not happy with this win in OT just ask Middle how they feel. As greendylan said...strange things happen in exhibition games. Yes, indeed they do. Congrats to the men for this comeback win. Nice finish guys.

MBB : Texas Tech vs Texas A&M Commerece (exh)

So much misinformation. Wondering why this was started in the football forum when there was another thread on this topic already in the proper area?

Here is a question I have not seen answered, but saw it in some of the literature sent out....how many of those homes were built after the drilling permits were issued and drilling had started in the proximity of the homes? Perhaps at distances greater than 200 feet? I cannot imagine that being the case, but stranger things have happened. If homes were built after this was a known drilling permitted area it smacks of buying or building a home near an airport and then complaining about the noise from planes flying overhead.

Agree with you, but the frack free folks jumped quickly and sided with their outside supporters as well...sure much smaller donation levels but greater actual hands on participation in rounding up supporters and teaching tactics. Showed that hands on can trump just throwing money at it in local elections...and, of course setting up a voting site right on campus. Would love to see the precinct by precinct early and General voting tallies. Could prove most interesting. Hey...sent you a PM on another matter...please check it out and respond when you have a moment. Thanks.
