I was part of a group invited to take a tour of the new UNT Student Union Saturday morning before the spring football game. In one word....FANTASTIC! Folks, UNT takes a backseat to no other student union with this new facility. It has everything in spades needed for a great place for our students, staff and alums. Lots and lots of meeting and banquet space, much more food court seating, lots of food options, a sports bar (where it appears beer will be an option), Barnes and Noble Bookstore, Apple Store, several outside seating and green areas, great views of Denton and the campus, a meditation room, a re-done and updated Lyceum, office space, bank, student services and on and on. The finish out is quality as well. This is a well done facility and being built to be green certified. Lots of artwork and UNT traditions built into the facility as well. Scheduled opening is said to be October, 2015. Will most likely be part of the 125 year university celebration...well, I am guessing it may well be part of that celebration. Interesting fact...this is actually a re-model project, not new construction. Could not get approval from the state for "new" construction. When you get a chance after it opens (or before for that matter) go see this new student union. You will be proud that you are part of the Mean Green Nation when you see it up close and personal.

Very humble guy too. Made a very heartfelt acceptance speech. Loved watching him play...glad I got to see him inducted in the HOF. Well deserved honor.

Again...I don't care how it looks...but please show me a post where I have done that? Come on...obviously you don't care how your endless broken record posts look in every thread...always the same...either. Why should I care? But, I'll wait here until you can find my critical post. Again... once you leave and especially if you leave on your own...once that happens...thanks for your service, but adios! Good luck in the future, not my coach any longer. It's not that I immediately don't like you, heck, no, it's just that I don't care one way or the other. Have no interest in following their careers anywhere else...who cares? I laugh each time I read one of the posts here drooling over some long gone ex-UNT coach. Who cares? But, if you want to follow their career, great, go buy a tee-shirt and a few tickets and hit the road following your now favorite ex-coach. I could not care less. It's just funny to me how some want to use ex-coaches to criticize their university. Get that...the university from which they graduated and claim...claim to support. Again...go buy the t-shirt and hit the road. Your choice. Heck, some Don't watch UNT games anyway, so no one will miss them if they become that t-shirt fan. -
Funny...those pre-disposed to be positive about certain QB's are showing their bias, those pre-disposed regarding other QB's are displaying their bias...imagine that! My take...not one...not one QB out there today is a where near ready to start against SMU...not one. Agree that Means looks to have a bright future. Sure wish someone I saw today had a bright present. But, still plenty of time for the lights to turn on for one talented QB (see Sir Calvin whose lights appear to have definitely come on), the ability of another to look off defenders and not lock in on one at the time the huddle breaks and for another to play in a game as well as he plays at practice. And, let us all not forget that a possible bit of help is working to become eligible in the fall. Hope people...there is always hope. But, that's what I got out of the QB play today...a bunch of hope...that is all. The good news in my opinion...no problem at receiver or RB on offense. And, I think when fall ball is over, the defense will be fine. Now, about that QB position? And what is up with all the low snaps?

Wrong yet again. My moral compass is just fine. I have always said and always will...as long as they are coaching at UNT they are my school's coach, thus my coach. And my criticism will remain private. Once they are no longer my coach and UNT's coach it is a different matter completely...especially if they leave UNT on their own. So...if I have criticized a current coach on this board I would appreciate you showing me that post...that would be a deviation for me. That has been and will be my position and you know that as we have spoken together about that more than once. So...you are just wrong again..nothing much new there when it comes to tossing out responsibility. Glad you feel coaches can win without the players. Maybe we should just suit up coaches and save all that scholarship money. Me, once they are on the court or football field the players are the ones who win or lose. Coach can't shot that free throw, make that proper pass, hit that layup or play defense. They can call plays, sub players in and out, yell instructions, etc., etc. but the players have to execute. Funny, I have never seen a coach win or lose a game without players on the floor actually playing the game. If there are players, they are responsible how they play. But, for you...I get it...only the coach is held responsible and he/she is 100% responsible for everyone's actions on and off the court. Got it.. We all "got it" when it comes where you stand. No sharing responsibility in your book which is where I stand and where probably most stand. Shared responsibility...such a hard concept for you to understand. But carry on...only at North Texas right...might want to ask K State about that one. -

Nope...wrong again, but since you are such a one trick pony these days, no use even discussing it with you. See Mike Peterson for example. But, you dismiss that as he got fired. Keep that head buried directly in the sand and never ever expect those responsible for actually playing to be accountable for anything. It's that attitude that creates the spoiled, look at me, athlete we see too much of these days. -

Pure BS....but you go ahead and keep absolving those most important for their own actions on and off the court. K State coach seems to feel the same way. Personal responsibility for players seems a foreign concept to you. But, you know "only at Nirth Texas", right...fee, maybe not so much it seems. But, you go ahead and keep sticking your head firmly in the sand. -
Imagine that! Thought it might be something like that. This is exactly what college BB and FB will look like if the players get their wish and start getting paid to play under the smokescreen of "full cost" of attending college. Players will most definitely be held accountable as the costs of not doing so for the university will be too large. Welcome to the world of "pay for play" folks.
-
One thing folks are over looking I believe in this "pay the athletes" thing, and that is the fact that scholarships will cost more, thus players will be more expensive, thus scholarships will be much less likely to be renewed from year to year for athletes who do not produce in the classroom and on the playing field. And oft-injured athletes may see their scholarships not renewed even though they have returned to the active roster. Athletes need to be very careful what they ask for because they might just get it. Paying athletes will take the "business" of college athletics much into the realm of the player who has been shielded from all this at least somewhat. No longer if costs go up as much as they will if payers are paid. And, paid is exactly what we are talking about here. This "full cost" smokescreen is nothing more than that. If full ride scholarship athletes were so broke and can't eat then why do they all seem to have cell phones, the ability to purchase multiple tats and the personal vehicles they are driving? Yes, of course, not all, but it does seem to fly in the face of the "poor athlete". And, let's mention here also the fact that scholarship athletes graduate college with far less student debt than the non-scholarship student as well. So...not getting paid? Hmmmmmmm. Anyway, the trend appears to be toward paying, so, athletes, buckle down or say goodbye to your scholarship. Too expensive to keep an under achiever. You think turnover in college basketball is high now? Just wait until the players start getting paid. It will be a revolving door spinning so fast you will need to sit down due to dizzyiness.

You have to attend games to get the game programs. UNT 90 might want to check out what's happening at K State these days as an example. -
Well, K State's HC has just released the third player from last year's squad. HC Bruce Webber just announced the release of forward Malek Harris (freshman), after also releasing soph. guard Marcus Foster (team's leading scorer by the way) and freshman Tre Harris. In addition, soph. guards Jevon Thomas and Nigel Johnson are transferring out as well. This leave three roster players for K State that had any significant playing time at all last season. Smoothfresh....what's up with K State?

New Voice of the Mean Green is Dave Barnett
KRAM1 replied to MeanGreen13's topic in Mean Green Football
Great choice! Perfect and, yes, UNT hired one of its own! Cannot think of a better "new guy" to replace George. Welcome home Dave! Go Mean Green! And, this adds to a trend of hiring our own....Jalie Mitchell in athletics and it appears one of our newest university VP's will be an alum as well. So, great news and maybe we can stop with the "UNT never hires its own" stuff now. Of course, that never was true in fact as you look across the entire university but it made for great fiction. Anyway, now it appears several very high profile university positions will be headed up by UNT grads. Perfect! -
WKU suspends swimming & diving for 5 years
KRAM1 replied to StealthEagle84's topic in Mean Green Football
As would any other program. So, why didn't they just fire the swimming and diving coaches and move along if the same penalty for the same offense would not be administered to the football or basketball programs? -
When thinking about the Jimmy Show, well I like it WHEN it works, but all too often he seems to dance around behind the line and it's too late when he decides to hit the hole and he gets maybe a half yard or a yard or so. If the hole is big enough to drive a Mac truck through Jimmy is really fun to watch in open space. But, in a mess with a small opening you have to hit quickly, it just doesn't seem that is where Jimmy excels. Too much "dancing around" before hitting the hole is what I get out of watching him at practice and during scrimmages and games. Kid has tons of talent and is super exciting to watch in the open field. Just wish he would stop a bit of the Jimmy Dance and get in the hole earlier. Kid has NFL potential, but not sure with his running style he will get much of a look. Hope so...not counting on it. If Wilson can stay healthy it is pretty apparent that he's the guy! He's looking really good, and like most here, Jimmy's not the guy because he lacks talent. He's not the guy at this point because Wilson is just that much better at this point. Jimmy will see plenty of action and here's hoping he excites the crowd often!

Indeed it was! Always thought that was interesting and think of BA every time that anthem is played during an Olympics or World Cup. On our city's eastern border.......

WKU suspends swimming & diving for 5 years
KRAM1 replied to StealthEagle84's topic in Mean Green Football
Really hammering the big money sports of swimming and diving. I wonder what they would have done had this been football or men's basketball? Anyone here think they would have suspended either for five years? -
Very few cared to have official reserved seats...took less than 5 min. To install before each game. No biggie at all. Plus...much much less expensive than having to hire all the "ushers" for each game like they do for the men's games. When you don't have to police the seats and aisles you need many fewer workers. Saves cash. Much much less work, less trouble printing and issuing season tickets as well. For the few of us who bothered to buy season tickets, there was some initial angst over the "general admission" policy change, but the athletic department was very open to finding a compromise that worked. Both sides handled it politely and professionally and we're open to compromise. Things tend to work out when that's the case. They did...people were fine with it.
-
Since most here who are discussing seats at the women's games do not attend the games, I guess they did not realize that season ticket holders should they wish, have reserved seat covers placed on their seats for the women's games. Thus, they have their assigned seats. Season ticket holders who did not care about that simply sat where they wished. I sat in reserved and marked seats all season that belonged to a friend of mine who also attended. I simply did not care about having the covers placed on my seats. So, actually, the athletic department accommodated everyone who wanted their seats "reserved". Worked very well. When enough people care enough to actually support the program, I am sure that assigned season ticket seats will return. In the meantime, the current system works very well. And, avoids the costs associated with having to police assigned seats for every game.

Hey...oldguy....shouldn't you now be "oldguynonstudent"?
-
Come on Oldguy...it's professional baseball where you sit through some 3.5 hours with not much to see besides some guys scratching their privates, spitting and standing around for the most part. Give those women a break, there was pretty much nothing else to see or do. Lots of one run games over that 3.5 hours in a season too. They were just getting in gear in case they had to attend another one. You want baseball? Go see a college game, a HS game or even the Frisco Roughriders or any lower level minor league team. That's baseball and you won't have to suffer overpaid prima donnas spitting and scratching for 3.5 hours. Look at it this way, the tickets were free, but parking was probably $10 and that frozen lemonade a real bargain at $6. But, spending time with your daughter.....priceless!

President Obama is set to be the graduation Commencement speaker on May 8th at Soth Dakota's Lake Area Technical Institute (a local community college). Will the students there have a tad more class than to start a lazy man's on-line petition in protest? Will students contend they will "walk out" on the President? Or, might they set up an alternative commencement address by someone who believes in "conversion theory"? Time will tell...time will tell.

Best answer candidate.

Now...this is a credible source. As I suspected. Nothing directed toward Coach Slinker and her program in particular, just the norm for the day in the "minor sports". Always good to hear from someone who was there, involved on a day to day basis and can speak from experience. Thanks. I forgot that she was later promoted to Assistant AD. Good catch, drex.
-
Just asking...not disputing...what is your source for that comment about the lack of support? I have never heard her comment on such even in our conversations back in the day when she was coaching. Again, not disputing you...just interested in where this is coming from. You do realize that no women's sport got much "support" back during those days of which you speak, right? And it was not unique to UNT. Many departments were struggling with budget issues created by Title IX realities and the expansion of opportunities for women athletes. In the case of UNT back in that day, donations from supporters were not any better...and really lower...than they are today. Where folks thought the abundance of funds to support Title IX initiatives was going to come from is beyond me. Plus...you want non-support? Ask the men's soccer program about that before you feel women's BB was slighted. But, if you can recall the source of this information I would love to know...like I said I have heard this before yet never heard Coach Slinker mention it at all. If true...really a sad situation. But, sign of he times perhaps. First class lady for sure. Just wish she had more success on the court. She apparently did extremely well, however, given the lack of resources if that were the case.
