  1. i agree emmitt. wasson made some really bad decisions in the last few minutes of the game and it started with not putting anyone back on that 4 and 12 to catch the pooch kick. i could understand on 4th and 7. i think that everyone knew that the pooch kick was coming on the first 4th down but if Abilene got a first down there, the game was pretty much over so I could understand him not putting anyone back. i felt bad for Riley. it was a pretty heartbreaking game for SLC, regardless of how many state championships that they have won. i didn't jump on the southlake bandwagon until I watched them play in person and in my opinion was one of the classiest teams that I have ever seen. glad to have riley and other southlake players at North Texas...
  2. why in the world would fran be crazy to take the job? where else is he going to go??
  3. I think you don't have to look very far to realize that they have a very hopeless situation down in Waco. I mean, look at Mike Singletary's comments. He essentially said, we can't be competitive on a national level. Unfortunately for Baylor, if you aren't a top 25 program every year, you will not be competitive in your own conference. Eagle is exactly right... when Taff was there it was a completely different league to compete in. 4 out of the 9 teams in that league were private schools. Baylor is the only private school now in the Big 12. They won't keep up. Rice and TCU have done well since leaving the SWC. SMU is hard to judge because of the penalty's that were imposed on them. Who knows where they would be if football wouldn't have been dead at that school for so many years and then you have Baylor. Baylor has been the door mat of the Big 12 football season since they joined the Big 12.
  4. Emmitt you crack me up man. Grab some vagisil? Wow... That was great. Then you try to attack my intelligence. Yeah you got me there man. I mean a "reading comprehension" joke... You can do better than that. All I am saying Emmitt, without writing a novel, is that it gets old hearing it from some of you, all the time. You can go ahead and get mad at me because I am the one that said it to you and I am ok with that. This message board doesn't keep me up at night.
  5. This is absurd. We get it. You are the greatest fan ever. I wonder though, why do we have to hear about it?? Why do we have to hear about you going to the SBC Championship game? Why do we have to hear about you being in New Mexico for the "miracle in the desert"? Why do we have to hear about you attending the game yesterday in the cold and rain? Why is there not a post on here from the other 400, 1,000, 5,000 or whatever the attendance number was telling us how great they are for being at the game?? What about the SBC champtionship game?? I know of two people that were there. Now, I could be wrong but let me go out on a limb here... you weren't the only two at the game. Where are all of those folks to tell us stories of their greatness? Please stop it. Some of us have bought season tickets, donated to the Mean Green Club, traveled to several out of town games and even volunteered for the athletic department doing promotions and working at basketball games that has about 100 people in the stands. However, we don't all wear it on our sleeves. Stop coming on here and trying to make people feel inferior because they didn't sit by you during a monsoon.
  6. slow down man. there were 3100 people at the basketball game. i have been to games that there hasn't been 300 so let's be happy with progress. we will have a huge attendance against OK State and people will start knowing that we are for real....
  7. i agree with part of what was said above. I am a big Todd Dodge fan but he does not get a pass on this. He is THE head coach. I understand that he has installed "his" offense and they have done a tremendous job. However, this defense is just as much his responsibility. TD needs a strong defensive coordinator for this program to be successful. Offensive minded coaches do not win championships withouth a good defensive coordinator. Your assistant has to balance out your weakness. If Dodge thinks that Mendoza is the answer for that, it concerns me. We are going to have a hard time winning with Mendoza. If you have that much belief in him, demote him to an assistant on the defensive and let him grow but it is brutually obvious that he is not cut out to be a d coordinator right now. Who are we going to hire?? At this point is that a legitimate question? In all seriousness, could our defensive be any worse??
  8. i hope some of you are kidding... i thought that our standards were getting higher around here?? if you give up over 60 points, 3 times... the d coordinator has to be fired. do not make excuses for this. our d is horrible and someone has to be responsible for that. Mendoza has to go.
  9. man what is wrong with you? that girl was smokin...
  10. i was very happy with attendance. i was figuring that we wouldn't have more 13K at the game. i think that the culture is slowly but surely changing. it seems that more and mroe students and alumni are buying into the program and making a stake in our future...
  11. i agree with the sentiments on here... first of all, i still think Mendoza should be fired. I was suprised to read yesterday that he had 2 years of 5A experience before we hired him at D1. sorry i haven't been on the board in a while.... the thing that bothers me the most about this kind of incident is that even though we have made incredible strides the last few months, things like this make us still look like a second class D1 team. coaches yelling at fans because of something they said on a internet message board? go back to high school...
  12. it's laughable that when someone questions our defensive philosophy, the only thing some people want to do is compare it to last year and say give the coach time. It's ok to criticize. Come on North Texas, I thought we were tired of excuses? Our defense was horrible against OU and SMU. Everyone says that OU is understandable and I agree with that. However, there are two things with our defense that has concerned me. One is that we are not aggressive. I understand that we don't have a defense that is very athletic and thus blitzing is going to leave corners out on an island or leave the middle of the field open. However, they are tearing us up by spreading out our defense and with us putting no pressure on the qb. Our defensive line is not good enough to put pressure on their own. We consistently sent 4 people against SMU and you can do the math... 4 on 6 (5 linmen and running back and/or tight end) is not going to work out to well for us most of the time. The second thing that bothers me is a lack of in game adjustments. It seems that the same defense we run in the first minute of the game is the same defense we are running 79 or 45 points later in the last minute of the game. I don't see the adjustments. We go with the same game plan on defense throughout the game. The offense we run does put more pressure on the defense.
  13. this honeymoon period with the defensive coaching staff is over. if your defensive line is bad... you have to make some adjustments. we didn't make an adjustment in the OU game (like it mattered) but we also didn't make many adjustments against SMU. there are not many defensive lines that are going to put a lot of pressure on a quick QB when it's 4 on 6 every play. Evyn Roman has played horrible but I have to agree with the sentiment that it's not completely his fault. It doesn't matter how good you are, you can't be left out on an island all night with no pressure and expect not to get torched. i understand that because of the type of offense that we are running, it puts a lot more pressure on our defense and i am not trying to pretend that I know "x's and o's" better than Dodge or his staff. However, I have not seen any adjustments in either game. Where is our great linebacking crew at?? Where is some sort of blitz?? Am I missing something here??
  14. i think that this the biggest rule change to come along in college football in years! instead of the average starting position being around the 20, teams will now be starting closer to 30 yard line. you are going to see a lot higher scoring games this year. it will also change up the way that coaches call plays. there is a difference in play calling when you are starting at your own 20 as opposed to the 35. you are not concerned with the punter backing up to within a few yards of the goalline... who does it benefit? it all depends. i don't think that it benefits anyone. you can say that it will benefit the BCS because they have better athletes BUT teams with less talent are going to have better starting position which means that when we punt, we will pin them back further. although there starting position when we kick off is going to be better than it was...
  15. I believe that Jesse Davis, our former student body presdent, lives up there. There is also an intern program up there that UNT sponsors. I know that it was one of the stops on the president's tour. Call the NT Exes and ask them about a chapter up there...
  16. i know that the article is from GQ so all of you probably think that it is a joke where some dude in his underwear is going to pop up as soon as you click it... but I promise this is actually an article. click on it and read it!!
  17. i read an interesting article on the plane yesterday.... does anything sound fishy to you guys about Memphis's relationship to this guy. http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_5735

  19. maybe david carr can come down and help run that camp Eagle... i hear he has some extra time on his hands
  20. naming the practice fields after DD definitely continues to make us look second class. he was not beloved and he was not successful at this university. winning the belt and beating Tech doesn't mean you should get anything named after you. HOWEVER, it's impossible to be critical of the decision because it really wasn't anyones decision but Mattress Mac. we just have to live with it. i think that it is laughable if you try and make a case for DD though. 18 games below .500 and now coaching as an assitant at a "lesser" school pretty much sums up what everyone else in the football world thinks about his coaching
  21. i can understand it. i am a registered native american (chickasaw) and do not take offense and I also think that people stretch it a little to far BUT can obviously see WHY it is offensive. Native Americans are an ethnicity as much as caucasians, african americans... the list goes on and on. however, do you think that any group would NOT be offended if you named your school mascot after their race and then paraded around a mascot that is a huge stereotype? everybody says that it is the "pc police" with native americans because it has been going on so long, it has just become accepted. calling Notre Dame "the fighting irish" and having a 4 leaf clover is completely different than the Washington Redskins (seriously) or the Atlanta Braves pretending to "chop" someones head off
  22. she is awesome. gretchen doesn't take any crap
  23. you guys are killing me talking about spirit and comparing it to high school. having spirit in your high school is totally different. i don't care if our cheerleaders visited every elementary in the metroplex. name me one university that is know for being spirited but the athletic department has absolutely no history of winning. if you can do that, then we have a school to model ourselves after and get ideas from. until then though, realize that spirit comes from winning and we have never done that. now that we are starting to change that, i believe that you will see our school spirit change... coach d- you are right. i have been a part of those orientations and that is the attitude of the students. i think however that you and the orientation leaders at this school did us an invaluable service because things have started turning around with the students. i think that the times are changing. students are more excited about north texas now because of freshmen orientation. unfortunately, we haven't given them anything to be excited about in the last few years with athletics. watch this upcoming football season... those students will come out. there is a buzz on campus. if we can keep it close at OU and ARK... people will be going crazy
  24. yeah i am sure that they would be all over the place if we didn't win the tournament on oh i don't know WEDNESDAY! (i will get you one as soon as I see them D) and Green i am so happy that you have that one great idea about going to ask our sponsors in the super pit to fund a billboard saying "great season"... i am also glad that you apparently have experience in marketing. however, since you know this game... tell me how we are suppose to go and ask these sponsors to put up a billboard and then ask the SAME sponsors to buy sponsorships. our pool of sponsors is limited and you have to be careful about what you ask them. again, is it cost effective to ask your sponsors to put up a billboard for something that has already garnered so much free publicity or should you wait and ask them to help you with something that you are going to have to spend money on. you can only put your bucket in the well so many times before it is empty. thank you for putting words in my mouth. i didn't say that having less than 2,000 people at a conference basketball game is ok. however, i do stand by the statement that the situation is not going to improve until we get a better product or play more high profile teams. i mean it is amazing.... everyone has recognized that we have a better product on the court now and suddenly you have excitement and buzz around North Texas basketball.... amazing how that works Our marketing dollars are not spent to get people to come to the games and it shouldn't be. They spend advertising money to keep athletics visible. some are just going to gripe and gripe no matter what we do. we could have taken out a 30 second super bowl ad and they wouldn't be happy.
  25. cost effective advertising..... so how much do you think that UNT athletics should spend on advertising? we are an athletic department working on a very limited budget. i guarantee you that promotions like table tents, flyers, billboards and commercials do not pay off for us right now. if you were to run a commercial 20 times a day on ESPN for a month leading up to a Sun Belt game, it wouldn't make a difference in the number of people going to the game. i wish our students supported UNT more. i wish our alumni supported UNT more. the lack of promotions is not because they don't want people to come to the game or that they are lazy, it's because they don't get any return on their investment. some of you talk about advertising like it is free. the biggest return that they get is that they are keeping athletics in the consiousness of that student, alumni or casual fan. it does not translate into butts in the seats though. please, some of you complain so much.. put yourself in the AD's shoes: How much is that worth in terms of dollars? they do a good job of keeping athletics visible with cheap advertising. until we start winning and getting recognized on a national level or we start playing more high profile schools, our attendance is going to be lacking. that's not to say that we should give up. but i ask you at what price should we "try" ?? don't waste this opportunity with the NCAA tournament... what do you want them to do? put up a billboard?? run a commercial?? put table tents up?? director of enthusiasm operations, at a college?? there comes a point when we can't make ourselves look 2nd class. if you have to have someone in charge of enthusiasm at a college, you have just admitted that you have a lot more problems than a table tent and billboard can address.
