...and all if the sudden special teams DON'T suck. ...these penalties, however DO suck. A lot. ...but the weather out here is great!

I'd be in for this... Keep us in the loop!

This may be the most counter-productive thread in 3 months on this board!

Horrible news. I feel for his family. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his friends, family and the team.

Best Case Conference Scenario For Unt...but Think Forward...
yyz28 replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Us and Houston together would be my first choice out of that scenario. ...but I see MWC replacing TCU with SMU before NT. The interest in CUSA for me sort of goes down a big notch if SMU isn't there. It is the only real natural rivalry for us in CUSA. -
Where's the nearest TV going to be in the Tailgate area? I've got a big texas guy in tow with me tomorrow. I'll have to scope you out King. I won't crash your food party, but I'd love to meet you - ...and go easy on my bud who's gonna be dressed in Texas gear. He's buyin' a ticket, so...

If this is the beginning if a run, it will be awesome. ...but this could just be a blip on the radar screen. Here's hopin'! Go Mean Green!!!!

Comparing the Texas and Texas Teams of 2010 against the teams from 2008 is pointless. Totally different group of athletes, and in one case, a coaching staff 2 games in.

Dodge, Unt Players Say They Still Have Something Left
yyz28 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I hope they do... I would expect them to say nothing less... I wouldn't expect them to come out and say "well, we're f'ed, so we're really not going to try". Did anyone really expect they WOULD just fold the tent? -
Riley is really the only person who is ready to go. Perhaps spend the next couple of weeks trying to get someone else ready, but for this week, Riley is the real only option.

This thread is, to me, why losing sucks so badly... ...because it causes fans who should have some sort of common ground to start ripping each other apart. There are some truths in this thread that should be understood by EVERYONE - 1. A fan is an important fan even if he can't give a penny other than to scrape together money for a few GA tickets for a few home games each year. This fan's input and opinion has value. 2. A fan who is a donor at a higher level, has season tickets and gives to the MGC has a louder voice. This doesn't make them a better person, or even mean their opinion is BETTER, but it does mean that they have a larger voice. College Football isn't a Democracy, it is driven by money, and thus those who give more of theirs to support the program have a bigger voice. 3. We are all emotionally invested. The reactions to posts by fellow fans in this thread prove this point. We all love this University and feel the athletic program is an important part of the College experience. Most of us came through this school during a time when the programs weren't an important part of the College experience (or it wasn't made an important part by the University like is common at most of the D1 schools across the country) and many of us are eager to see the programs become a larger part of the experience of being a student at UNT. 4. if we were winning, these conversations wouldn't be happening. Sometimes "supporting the current team" and "supporting the program" are at odds - particularly this season when there is a 2% chance that the current team pulls off the miracle needed for this coaching staff to keep its job at the helm. Particularly when the current coaching staff is well liked, though not getting the job done. ...it is easier to fire someone you don't like. It is prudent to look at the future and begin discussing what this future may look like in light of what has happened on the football field so far this season, but it is also important to support these players and these coaches so long as they are still fighting and clawing with our school's uniform on their backs and our logo on their chests. I know passions and emotions are running high - but I urge everyone to simmer down the anger at one another. We are stronger together and can do more for this year's team and more for the program as a whole going forward than we can when we're going at each other. Go Mean Green!!!

I love John L. Smith... He'd be great. ...but I'm with the concencus here. I want a proven head coach, not another up and comer.
-
I feel for Riley - He's been thrown in an impossible situation here. Succeed where you've been unable to succeed to date and now do it with less physical ability or your dad loses his job. The mental pressure this must be putting on him is a bigger reason than his ability or athletic strenghts and weaknesses are for getting him out of the situation if possible. However, I don't think we really have an option right this second. Hopefully given this set of weapons, Coach Canales who so many here think so much of, can work the offence around this player and this set of circumstances to give us a fighting chance. My heart goes out to Riley. He's in a tough spot.

Am I The Only Fan Who Feels This Way
yyz28 replied to the real grad88's topic in Mean Green Football
Winning isn't the only thing - but in the end, what other measure do you measure a football head coach by? I'm not prepared to fire the coach midseason, despite the growing lynch mob. But somewhere between FIRE HIM NOW and KEEP HIM NO MATTER HIS RECORD a rational course of action lies. I don't take very seriously angry calls for blood the night of a tough loss. -
So you assume.
-
So Canales or Deloach deserve a shot at the reins despite their performance due to the circumstances, but Dodge has to face the executioner now, despite them? No thanks.
-
Canales is the OC. We just had our offense shut out for the first time since 2006. The polish is off that apple for me...
-
The Canales that just coached the offense to the first shutout loss since 2006? No thanks.
-
I'm beyond venturing a guess at this point. I KNOW we CAN win this game. ...but we could have won a bunch that we've seen slip away. ...this team really needs this win. I hope they pull it out and I know they have the talent and the ability.
-
Agh... so it's like a two-fer? If you get Raptor-Jesus you have to have the Raptor-Wrangler too? ...so cost is really the issue here? Hummmmmm... ...but what about the new athletic fee? Surely we'll have enough budget for the pair once that kicks in? ...if its just a "NO" then the Wizard guy would be my second pick, but I think we should stretch to get Raptor-Jesus.

I'm not saying that if he doesn't hit the bar, real or not, he shouln't be fired. In fact, he should. If he doesn't have a winning season this year, my vote would be to fire him AFTER THE SEASON IS OVER. ...but what exactly do we (the program, the players and the University) gain by taking him out in the middle of the season? I.E. firing him on October 11th (the monday after the 6th loss assuming he doesn't win one before then ) What does that reall gain us over firing him on November 29th? I argue the answer is NOTHING. If he fails then his two coordinators have ALSO failed as they are both pretty well at the helm of their prospective ships at this point. What do we gain by making one of them interum head coach when we (should) have no intention of promoting either of them to Head Coach the following year... In fact, you're going as far as telling the interum head coach that he's going to be fired in 5 weeks too, so what is really the motivation? Why would we assume things would improve this season by making this move? WHY create additional upheaval in the middle of the season? Why do something that can be perceived as classless by anyone? Why do something that may cause bad blood amoung any of the players, players parents, and even the staff, a lot of whom may be friends to the program and in positions to help as HS Coaches in NT's recruting area? To gain six weeks in a national coaching search? Regardless of the state's requirements of how long a job is posted, if there IS a hard set "7 wins or your history", you can bank on the fact that RV will begin the effort of finding the new coach the DAY AFTER the 6th loss. You don't have to fire Dodge mid season to start the search right then and there.
-
The actual quote was from Dodge and it was "Six wins won't get it done." There is, however, no direct indication that 7 games is a mandate from the AD, or if that is simply the bar that Dodge believe he must clear in order to see this season as a success. To the point - if we have a 12 game season, that means until we've lost 5 games, the possibility of winning 7 still remains. If there IS a deal in place, you ABSOLUTELY don't fire the man until the deal is unreachable. While firing the coach mid season might satisfy some fans who are looking to gnaw on raw meat, the disruption to the team and the message that sends to the players, especially the seniors who have played for this man since they were Freshman, who CAME HERE to play for him, is not the message we should be sending. A choice was made last year to give Dodge the full 4 years to make it happen. Even if you know he's not going to return after the 5th game of the season, you let the man finish his season, say good-bye to his players. We may look back and see Todd Dodge as a poor football coach, but I believe the VAST majority here feel that he has done a lot of good for the program, even if it hasn't translated to the number of wins we all want to see, and the University should treat him with respect even if it is in his release. ...he may return to being the winningest high-school coach in the state. No need to create bad blood. No need to burn a bridge.

Quite... How true this is.

why hasn't Raptor Jesus and the Wizard guy not been added to the poll?!?! This is election tampering man!!!
