The Tuesday Night Elections
yyz28 replied to UNT90's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I'm so sick of the myth that the rich doesn't pay their fair share. The top 1% pay over a third, 34.27% of all income taxes. The top 5% pay 54.36% of all income taxes. The top 10% pay 65.84%. How much more do you want? ...and what makes you think that they will stop spending, and that they will get to the point where the confiscate 50% of YOUR income too? -
It's a try-out in so far that Canales will have to impress for the remainder of this season to be on the short list - but it isn't a try out in the sence of "you do good you're automatically the guy".
-
This is just how I feel. I think there are some way better choices out there. Is Bower a good coach? Yes. Is he better than the previous endless list of coaches we've had here? Certainly is on paper. ...but I think there are better choices that we may be in a position to get.

There is a reason that people in love with BCS conferences don't want TCU and Boise in the National Title Hunt - they fear that their beloved team/conference may be shown for what they are - BEATABLE. ...damn, we need a playoff system.

I agree. It'll take 6 games. -
Cowboys = Mean Green ?
yyz28 replied to NT80's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
It's been time for a new coach at Jerry's world since before it was being built. -
...this is what is wrong with college football. ...just sayin'.

Somewhere in the middle, the truth lies. RV will take fan, alumni and booster input into account. After all this is a business, and the best way he can fill the seats in our new palace next year is to have a big name that based on name alone the fanbase believes a turn around is a matter of "this season or next" and no longer a matter of "if". Now, that doesn't mean RV isn't dealing with realities that we aren't contained to deal with in our discussions - but to assume the AD isn't going to give some consideration to the wishes of the people who actually care enough about this program to write about it here (especially given RV's history of open communication with this community) is silly. That dosn't mean he's going to hire the name with the most votes in the poll (or any name on the poll for that matter) but our reaction is a big part of the consideration in this hire. So somewhere between abosoute influence and no influence at all, our actual level of influence lies.

I agree with #1. #2 - I tend to disagree, as he will have to put some of that aside if he wants to come here. There is a little bit of twisted logic to him being a perfect fit for this program. Let's assume he learned his defensive lesson at Tech - something that was evident toward the end as he had finally installed a great Defensive Coordinator and they were having real success on both sides of the ball. ...the boost he could give North Texas in terms of visability, wins, potential conference championships weigh heavy. ...even if he was a short termer, the potential boost in having him here for a few years is huge. #3 - sort of the same as above. #4 - Major could turn out to be one hell of a coach, but he's a positions coach today and this isn't the time for NT to take a risk like that. #5 - Levitt - I think he's probably the best option if you want a quick turn around, espceically if he keeps Canales on. ...he would have a great inside line on what we have in terms of talent and how best to use it because of Canales' experience here. If we want to be in a serious hunt for the title NEXT SEASON, this choice is the most logical. #6 - Another fine choice. Terry Bowden would be a good fit here and has had some real success. ...in other words, 4 of the choices listed here would all work, IMHO, for different reasons. The fan base who don't really know any of these guys or what is in their hearts and minds judge based on what the media and their W-L record tells us, which I don't think gives any of us a true picture of what any of these guys would be like at UNT. Of the guys on your list, I would be thrilled with Leach, Fran, Levitt or Bowden.

To play the other side of that coin, other than Fry, nobody really had a career when they got here. ...this is a different time. Decent budget, facilities that don't suck. I just get a feeling this time will be differnet, because we're doing things different for a change.
-
I agree with everything you said Jazz... I simply argue that the students who will react badly to paying market price for a caliber of coach we're looking for are not going to come back and support UNT athletics after they graduate regardless of the new coach or the pricetag associated with him. ...the students who will react badly voted no on the fee and don't support athletics today. Being frugal on this choice to spare their feeling does nothing positive for the program or university.
-
To say you have no regrets is a far cry from saying you didn't learn anything. ...just because you might do something different next time doesn't mean you regret what you did this time. Mistakes lead to lessons learned. Hard to regret wisdom you have obtained though hardship and struggle.
-
Dan - I didn't say we can land everyone being kicked around. I'm reacting to the "why would any coach ruin his career" comment, which is a MAJOR negative shot at us, and is not "based on truth and fact". This is an attractive job, will include some attractive money and is the kind of thing that I think a lot of coaches will find appealing. ...far more than Norm gives NT credit for. I am happy for the segment too. Press is great - but the bias without really knowing what NT is about right now is no different here by Norm as we bitch about when Dale Hanson or some other Dallas Sports media type disses us or flat out ignores us.
-
I disagree about the reaction. A vocal minority of students would bitch... ...but really, who cares? The next generation of students will expect a culture of winning and will be choosing NT because of that culture not the current one. I'm happy to piss of a few students who aren't going to look back at UNT after they graduate anyways. ...and why would the press react negatively? I don't think they really have that much of an axe to grind. ...and again, if they do - who cares? We are NORTH TEXAS. This is about us. I don't care about ANY outside reaction to this. I don't care what people who voted no to growing this program think about this. I DO care what Alumni who support the program, boosters who support the program and Students who support the program feel about it. ...everyone else can go to hell. ...but that's just me.
-
The question is will you support the program? The answer is yes. I'm not speaking of unconditional support of the decision made, but once it is made, this is my school, come hell or high water. I'm in.

Yet another DFW sports journalist without a clue about what UNT is really all about. I wish I were surprised, but I'm not.
-
Chill out guys... He was suggesting doing it during tail gate time. It is a fun idea if you're someone who wants Leach here. He isn't my first choice, but you know if he comes, I'll be first in line to buy a Green Pirate flag.

I expect we'll see Todd Dodge at the remaining games this season, home and away, based on his interview with TMGR. I look forward to having a chance to shake his hand and say "thank you"! ...and I LOVE the quote by Riley. He intends to finish what he started. It reminds me of seeing him puke on the field and then throwing a TD pass in the State Championship game before he came to UNT. He doesn't quit. He won't quit.
-
UNT is my home. I love her unconditionally. I will always do what I can, no matter how humble, up or down. GO MEAN GREEN!!!
-
Man, I can't thank Coach Dodge enough for his handling of this situation and the good he did while he was here. I, for one, will really miss him and the positives he brought to the program. I hope that we can find a replacement with an equal quality of character. Thank you Coach!

If I were an admin on this board, I'd lock this thread - cause this thread is stupid. LOL!
-
Thanks for the clarification!
-
Thank God we're back to Jazz... ...not that I really like the Jazz, but those guys were pretty bad...
-
Holy Crap, these guys are bad. Now I'm listening because it is like watching a trainwreck, you know what I mean?
-
Actually, I did hear RV say that he hopes to have someone in here by the end of the season so they can hit the ground running. ...but no, they don't have a clue what they are talking about.
